Is it about Winning?

It's good to introduce children to sports. Besides ensuring their health and fitness, sports nurtures team spirit, goodwill and competition. Having said that, does it matter if we win or lose?

My son, Emir, participated in the Smart Reader's sports day today and I saw him bonding with lots of friends. I notice two wonders: 1) they identified themselves as Blue, Yellow and Green teams, 2) they enjoyed winning, but didn't blame each other for losing. Hmmmm...something to ponder about how adults may behave, instead???

Here's a picture of us, Emir and d proud mom.

And...here's what Emir has to say about winning: "I'm the champion....." and "I've got a trophy...". This is another special thing about sports. You win a medal or a trophy everytime. Instead of hampers or goodies, we can arrange our medals and trophies in the glass cabinet and be reminded of our triumphant moments...yuppppp:) we're winners forever.

Here's a picture or Emir and friends, d Green Team from Smart Reader Kids Putrajaya Presint 15.

Now, a little coverage about Nadia. Yesterday, her school participated in a national choir competition at Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur. The boys and girls were so excited, mainly because they were going to KL and that they were selected to represent the school. Congratulations...to all of you. My eldest daughter, Nadia, was the choir conductor. Later, I learned that they only got consolation prize. When I told them to pose under the scorching hot sun after the competition, they were smiling with pride and victory. Apparently, winning is not all about getting first or second place. It's the invaluable experience, team spirit and sweet challenge that give them the thrill and excitement. The kids have won, indeed. Take a look at this photo, and you'll know what true winning really means:)

Well, have you got some thots to share here? Please feel free to post your comments.

hye pn.Zue,

1st of all congrats to Emir for his victory. YAY!!!!! Future hope for the country, maybe he may lead us to Olympic one day, who knows...
I've just posted bout arau in my blog, so I think both of us posted bout competition, just that, its sports and debate.

let it be any matter, winning or loosing doesn't matter, the effort & determination that we put it matters.

Based on my personal experience, frankly speaking I've faced 5:1 losing to winning ratio, so I would never stop even I'm told so, since I believe, we are all equal, each with advantages and disadvantages. Its just the goal and the way reaching it might be different but the recipe it still the same...

I shall quote Swami Vivekananda here " No white man has more intelligence, but courage determines that ability". When we started EDSoc. only few were there, slowly we grew and growing, where now even ppl in S'pore knws bout us within 2 years time span...

So what's the big deal if you fail, try again. The world itself didn't appear just like that, based on Big Bang theory and it took millions of years bfore amoeba and nucleus based cells came to earth's surface. So, if a huge world needs to overcome those obstacles and time to "earth", so who are we... Normal human being, so the determination and courage that should be in everyone's heart n brain should be greater than that.

I would say, "A real man comes in front and talk", compared to the chickens that becks around. This is the mentality that M'sians shuld change, till that don;t dream of Gold Medal in Olympic even you offer 1billion ringgit.

Money cannot buy these values, but true feelings and courage can get that even you are nobody.

"Di mana kemahuan, di situ ada jalan" = "If thr's a will, thr's a way".

So why bother wining, think of trying. Trust me you would get the satisfaction that nothing else can give u in life. Being proud of achieving something by your own feet, even its the last place for now, but how far are you with the leaders? None...

I believe that God will only help people who work really hard, so guys if you fail in something, keep your heads up and say, "One fine day I'm gonna win it no matter what obstacle I face!!!". Think like Spartians and act like them. Scared of nothing except God...

Rome was not built in one day!!!!

Wow this brings back memories stored in the back of my head. I use to actively compete in my schooldays. Be it in kindergarten, primary school, secondary school or even before kindergarten! I'm not sure what it's called. Nursery school, no maybe pre-kindergarten, or was it pre-school?? (o_0)

Football, track and field, debate, tilawah, story telling, and much more. It was a lot fun, with nerve-wrecking moments, but indeed they are invaluable experiences.

To me yes the experience is important when your at a young age or just starting out to compete. Constant exposure makes you familiarize the situation, hence increasing your confidence in future competition should they arise.

However, when you get involved in a competition more than once, you become more competitive. You want to win. You want to be the best. Your mentality naturally changes. So in my view, this determines how far a person can go. If he/she is really serious into winning, into being the best, then they will do their best, hardest, smartest in making it a reality.

"Nak seribu daya, tak nak seribu dalih"

I believe competitions creates character in those who participate. Because you have faced your worst enemy, YOURSELF! So for those who haven't competed yet, try to. Challenge yourself and test your skills. See how far you can go and how good you are. There's definitely nothing to lose in competing. Instead, there's plenty to gain.

Salam..

Thanks to all three of you, and your inspiring comments:) Firstly, great quote 'Vivek', which is so true. "Rome was not built in one day". Readers n writers out there - "a stitch in time saves nine". I jez told my ENNF 103 Section 3students in class to start writing and speaking up. If you start now, soon it becomes a habit, and it will benefit you in no time. Welcome again, and a big hi:) to 'daenz'. a very interesting comment, and tremendously wonderful and useful advise for our juniors at university. I agree with you 'daenz' that competitions create character. Let's nurture the positive character that we can develop via competitions, everybody, and life will be more rewarding in the end. At least we start somewhere, rite 'anonymous'...

What about losing? We can't avoid from being a loser. No one is a winner all the time.Do losers get anything?I'm sure all of us had failed in a lot things.I believe what we gain from losing are much more precious than winning.Thomas A. Edison once said that "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up".What he meant is, the real losers are the people who gave up.In life, we need to pass failure in order to succeed. So, being afraid of losing is unneccesary.Surely we will be disappointed if we fail, but we are doomed if we don't try.Its not about winning. Its about trying our best. :D

It is the knowledge that you have done the extra mile to be outstanding, not just to be good, better or best..

hi madam zue..
I have read the article with the title "Is it about Winning?".
Its really a valuabe article that should read by everyone. In any competition there will be a winner and looser.Thats the nature of a compatition.so we should work hard next time to achieve success if we achieve failure for the first time.. As we know Alexander Graham Bell is a handicap. He innovated telephone that mostly everyone in this world using now.when I read his encyclopedia i got to know that he achieve failure about 1000 times.but one great thing is he never gave up!!try to imagine if he gave up that day, would we having handphones in our hand now??THIS IS A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE I THINK.."My mom said to me before, failure is the first step to achieve success"..thats 100 percent true..in short success wont come to us very easily..we have to work hard for it..success in our hand if u work hard for it..

THANK YOU AND SEE YOU

wauuu u had enjy ur weekend yay????
i like your way pn zue, although you are buzy with lecturing, writing and much more task to be done,u could manage yourself to attend the sport give full of support to your kids right...

as we know, nowdays not many mom or dad could manage their self to attend their children sports, any competition or school activity....
by doing like this, maybe it will can break their spirit to win the game and this automatically will stop their ability to go more further...
so,without support, even a world class player can be a looser, its true right???so jz imagine, can little children face their challenger without support???
its probably cant rigt??

bye the way, thanks,pn zue,by ur way it could open the eye of mom n dad outside their...
anyway send my regards to your child ya,n say that i wish congrates to them, hope one day they will be a world class champion....

Hi Pn. Zue,

Before I share my thoughts about d article,I'd like to congrats both Emir & Nadia for trying their best in d competitions they entered! Y(^v^)Y
Back to d topic, as for me, games & competitions aren't about who wins and who loses.., it's about to gain experiences, meet new friends & to enjoy ourselves in whatever we're doing. However, that doesn't mean that we should just simply forget about it instead we should learn from our mistakes. That's where one of elements of experience come from, mistakes.

Even if a person was defeated, but if deep inside of his heart he strongly believed that he's not trying hard enough, he will surely not give up and try and try again. Likewise, Robert Green Ingersoll's quote is giving the same idea "The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart".So, it's not d end of d world when a person loses. It's an opportunity to try harder & to perform better!
Thus, I'd suggest that when we enter any kind of competitions, just relax and enjoy yourself..!

Take care! ^-^

winning or loosing?in my point of view it both matters.its of course a great reward to win any competition we participated especially after putting in alot of hardwork for the victory.but what about if we fail?i have entered many competitions in school and believe me to the people who never ever failed in their life, loosing is a hurtful experience.loosing is the culture of any competiton perhaps someone has to loose.after all at the end of the day the experiences and memories that we captured throughout the competition that we take part in that matters.the friends that we make along the way and the lessons that we learn from winning and especially loosing is the precious and valuable memory.

Aha! Competitions! Now this is a very interesting topic to talk about! Well, I think that competition is something that could dig up ones aptitude of showing his/her talents reluctantly. Nowadays, you can see many people gearing up to chip in competitions either to win or to show their talents. This is somehow a very superior move to become a triumphant person and excel in flying colours. But sad to say, competitions can also make someone to feel dejected or I would say, heartrending if they didn’t win any particular competitions. FOR THOSE OUT THERE WHO DIDNT WIN YET, JUST DONT GIVE UP! NO ONE IS A LOSER! Let me end this with a nice quote. “Losers live in the past. Winners learn from the past and enjoy working in the present toward the future.”

P/S : Congratulations to your son! What a mighty boy he is! Hope he can become our knight in shining armor one day!

Dr. Zue said...

Ritz, Maria,Kartik, and all of you wonderful people,

It's been enlightening and eye-opening, reflecting on your comments. I couldn't agree more. If we only have more knights in shining armours out there who will compete for the true spirit of competition, where winning or losing does not register, our world will truly be more intellectual and colourful. That healthy competitive spirit, and friends we make through the battles of wits.

Yuppp!!! ENNF 103 - that's the spirit this semester, yah:)We shall start with a Battle of Wits in class next week...First Round..ding..ding..dong..

hi pn zue..

for me both winning and losing matters.. by winning i'll feel very happy and proud of myself...most importantly i make my parent happy...thats what matters to me most...
if i lose it really breaks me down sometimes but i'll always find a way to raise up..i will find something to motivate me so that would not give up...sometimes when i do give up, i'll ask for advice and opinions from elders..
i guess thats all for now.. tq

nice kids...... hmmm... winning??? actually in a game or competition it doesn't matter whether we win or lose but what matters is what we achieve in the end of the day through the game...... win or lose just matter of luck and efforts but the real part of a game is the moral values and the expriences that we learned....
if we say about winning .... before this winning is everything for but time and the exprience through the game and competiton thought me the real part which is exploring more about human behaviour.... because when an adult loses a game... they will tend to accuse others for the mistakes instead admitting their own mistakes but small kids or children they dont really understand the meaning of losing or winning... for them...if they winning they get prize ... if lose they enjoy their valueable time with friends... for them everything is enjoyment... but all this quality will slowly fade from the them as they undergoes the process of growing up..?? seemz like i have to go now cause wana attend your class now... k... bubye...

Dr. Zue said...

hi cyrus,

Interesting observation of the significant relationship between growing up and possible reactions to winning / losing. To an extent, perhaps we have something to learn from children, and preserve our 'childlike' qualities and characteristics like willing to explore, no prejudice, fun, etc. Of course we can't be naive, and we can't be childish!

Unknown said...

Is is all about winning? My answer is NO!everyone dreams about winning. But from my point of view winning is not everything!Winning or losing doesn't matter what really matters is that we should enjoy every of the moments and process in the competition.we make friends and we socialize around.Sometimes losing is not a bad thing!Have you ever heard of "failure is the key to success"?i strongly believe in this phrase as it has proven me right..i do encounter failure most of the time but the failure has actually motivate me to become xtra hardworking to achieve my goal.
so winning is not about everything and do not become ego and self-forgetful when we win sumthing in future!

hello pn zue :)
first of all, congrats for both Emir and Nadia for their victory!

I think that children nowadays should be exposed to competitions since they're young. Not only competition makes a person more experienced but living in a modern era today requires one to compete with others in many aspects in order to survive. Parents should encourage their kids to enter competitions because this will help them to develop their soft skills and increase their confidence level, thus grooming them into an all rounded person. Exposing children to competitions will instill a spirit to compete and be the best. This is important because later on, they need to compete with others to be successful in life. Take education for instance, you need to compete with other undergraduates to get a place in university and the competition rate is getting higher by the day. Unless you compete and have what it takes, you might not have a chance to enter university at all. That's why we have to always compete to be the best in ensuring a bright future ahead and exposing children to competitions is indeed a good start :)

First and foremost, congrats to pn zue for being a supportive mom and also a mom who had successfully nurture your children.WINNING...a word for success that everyone competes among one another to achieve it. However, in our opinion winning doesn't mean everything. From losing, we still learnt lessons and moral values from the competitions. The competitive spirit is important in all competitions, we should battle on.. no matter what happens. =)

i still remember, when i was in high school,i was joined a music band.I was 1 of the euphonians(a music instrument).Every year,we pacipate in formation competiton. For your information,we never win in it as we always prepare in last minute.During my last year there,i told my team why must we feeling down if we never work very hard on it?so,4 months before the battle begins,we did a lot of practises, improvement in our song and the result,we won in 2nd place.Only He knows how happy we are.=)

hello pn.zue!!

winning or losing?? As we know everyone wants to win..but if there are only winners who is going to be the loser??

As a normal person winning in anything means alot to him or her..this is because it makes you as an individual to feel proud of yourself and your love ones too..

Besides that, being a loser is not that nice but I feel it is a step to victory..why do I say that??
By losing you gain an experience and would work extra harder in the future to overcome your negativity and lead toward success..:-)

In short I would like to conclude as a person...what is life without victory or failure?? Is just how you overcome it and enhance it to benefit yourself...:-P

P.S: Never ever give up in anything you started in...!!!

Anonymous said...

I think it should be "winner" as opposed to "the people who did not make the cut", "runners-up", or "unplaced".

I believe that in the era of political correctness the word "looser" (as against "failure" or "quitter") carries a connotation more negative than that would be deserving of a mere opposite meaning of the word "win".

A word from the wise: "kita semua adalah pemenang bukan pengalah". hehehe

Dr. Zue said...

Hi Ritz,

Thanks for dropping by and generous words of wisdom. Guess i'm gonna adopt one for class discussion, ya...now, this comment is very intellectually stimulating. I like that spirit - "Kite bukan pengalah.." Vincent Chong (AF 1) also believes in it, you know...and look at how we steadily won the hearts and votes of AF 1 followers and die-hard fans..

The fact that we're brave enough to particiapte and compete, we have already won a lot of intra personal an inter personal challenges. So, we can be winners in many different ways and levels. As mentioned by Hasliza, the world nowadays requires us to compete, and it's only when we compete can we make ouselves better and finally become the best:)

All the best everybody.

For me,goals are objectives or aimsthat we have set for ourselves which we hope to achievewithin a given time frame..
I agree with VIVEK where the effort & determination that we put it matters..
However to win or generally we say to be succeseful in our life, we should have goals &make it a point to achieve.Achieving a goal can be one of the most rejoicing and fulfilling times in our life..
There are times where we can achieve or win something for just a few seconds but sometimes we achieved our goal after several unseccesful attempts which took many years ,trials and errors..

Winning is everything. It is the main reason human beings started to compete in the first place. Competitions always exist, even if the starting line is vague and sometimes unseen. Do not get me wrong, that does not necessarily mean that I belive only with winning we can be successful. Without defeat, we won't be able to motivate ourself to rise back from the ashes and start over. To conclude, losing is a lesson that should be learnt and should be vowed to never be repeated. A quote from Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If' reads "If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss"

Zu, especially Nadia and her choir team mates..It is just the innocent look in their faces, showing happiness, satisfied by the commitment and cooperation of their team mates..where does winning stand if compared to be valued for hardwork within a team?..:-)..after all, that is the pleasure which stays within..thank you..

Beijing Olympics 2008 is simply an example to show how do people compete each other....they are among the best in the world!Athletes from all around the world has its own ambitions and to simply illustrate how they work hard just by this fact..."to decrease humans heartbeat for just one single beat takes a year of practice"...this shows that they need to work very hard to make sure they are good enough in term of physical..not to mention the mental which i think is the most hard part of every athletes..Big names such as roger federer as a first world ranking in tennis recently falls in the hand of other inexperienced player...in football, the term of away and home game actually reflects how do the mental can play an important part of performance..lots of teams loose during their away game due to lack of supporters which known as an element to support mental of the players...

Our national badminton player loss to Lin Dan of China can be an example how the pressure sometimes can effect the player;s performance...

Beijing 2008 Olympics game was really a great event which shows the good competitions among other's...value of teamwork, positive thinking ,and miracles which always derived from spirit to win and how we handle losses positively...

winning is the thing we craved the most. winning is about everything around us and the after effect can overwhelm you or sometimes consume to become something you hate. most people like to win. ok not most but every human that lives in this world loves winning right?. i mean who doesnt? winning is like an appreciation and the result for all of our hardwork to compete and achieve for greatness. but some of the people takes winning as something to die for. they might do anything even beyond reasonable thought in the name of winning and victorious. as to that, we should really consider winning is the best and nicest thing you feel and futhermore realise that winning isnt everything...

Hye Pn Zue!

well, sorry for dissapointed you cause u always got high expectation for the person named, JOHN.So i tried my best to come to ITMS to make my first comment in ur blogspot :)

i just read bout this article. congrats to Emir and Nadia. I always wanted to win something but i couldnt...

Winning winning winning!!!All bout winning!!! Does winning really important? Just to tell that im always on the losing team so i felt the taste of losing...its really not as tastefull as it seems...like Madame said its not bout winning but its about the gaining of friendship, experience and effort made.Anyhow losing still does taste bitter, some of the people gets cocky and u know...something not nice happened which really turn all the mood of the participants.Losing or winning doesnt really make a difference cause humans tend to forget what happened. If its presented with trophies then its very valuable but if its just a certificate or hampers....it doesnt really give much impression as its not a permanent asset.Everyone loves winning but effort must be made to get something in return. Therefore one must never give up eventhough you lost but it will feel good because you tried your best ^^

Hmm,hi pn zue...
This is the 1st time I visit this blog and I find it quite interesting...ok,back to the topic.Winning huh.I like to win.Everybody like to win.But not everybody can win, right? It's a nature of a competition that there has to be winner and loser. But that doesn't really matter.Eventhough I like winning but it's not always about winning. It's about the passion and the experience that matter the most.Yeah, when you win you get a trophy or a medal but those things will happen to lose in a few years, you know, when you grow up,those thing that you get when you were young will become a mess,so you just "dump" those trophy and medal in you store in your house.Well, most of the people did that. But experience is a different thing. You cannot just throw it away cause you need experience to guide you through out your life.Plus, losing is not the end of everything.Actually,it's a beginning. But don't keep lose all the time. What i trying to say is,we should adapt.Learn from the mistakes we have done. From there we will slowly start climbing the stairs to success.haha.
I think I better stop here before I start to "merapu".I don't know wether my comment do make any points or not. And,one more thing, sorry if my english are not good."biase la",student.hehehehe.bye!!!

Hey Pn Zue... Your children are adorable.

To me, it doesn't really matter if a person wins or loses in a competition, because in the end of the day... we all gain something useful for our lives. May it be knowledge, friendship or even the consolation prize, we still win something in the end. Not every competition is about winning the first prize. Therefore, we all are winers in the end...

First of all, congrats to both Emir and Nadia (: They're truly adorable and thumbs up for their efforts! In my opinion, competition is good-healthy one, that is. Competition means one has to 'fight' for victory. However this would mean that winning or losing are the results of the process. "Is it all about winning?" YES! Winning is satisfaction. Winning DOES matter because of all the efforts we put into, we have the right to feel that we deserve to achieve something out of it. However, we somewhat gain advantages from losing as we will learn from our mistakes and finally able to move forward. Therefore losing is not that bad and I'm a loser anyway :p

p/s You're a cool mum!

Yours sincerely,
Mirra

I strongly agree with Pn zue.It is not all about winning.Wats important is the benefits one gains whenever he or she takes part in a competition.Competions;be it in sports, debate, choir, colouring, etc. has precious advantages.Competitions help to develop, build and shape one’s interpersonal skills.Through competitions one gets to meet and get to know more people. In addition to that, through competitions one gets to discover how important team work is,respecting each others’ views and also to be tolerant to others. These interpersonal skills are very important. You might tink that it is not but it is really important especial when it comes to employibility. On the other hand, competitions is a mode to boost our efforts on something. For instance, when we take part in a competition, we would work harder as to not humiliate ourself on the day of the competition.Consiquently, in the same time we get to improve ourself, and gain new and invalueable experiences which helps us to be more competent. All in all competitions do lots of good to us.Therefore we should not feel afraid of it but go out there and furnish ourselves with experiences money can’t buy.

hye puan zue.

congrates to your son of the winning in the event..children didn't blame each other for the losing mybe because they enjoy the game and didn't bother if they win or lose but the spirits is still there.like adults that like to point of people when they r losing because they don.' want to admit what have they done, and they don't like to be the loser. But if they r profesional in the situation, they will admit that everybody have made a mistake because there's no person who is perfect. :)

Hi pn.zue....i like this article...

When it comes to competition, of course there is winning and losing. I like winning, but i hate competitions because sometimes i lose. Therefore, i'm not saying that i completely hate competitions, its just when i lose in it.....hahaha. Although i lose, i never give up, i still try my best to achieve or win something. Besides, i don't get upset of losing, you know why? Because, for a moment, I will think why did i lose and what should I do to win that certain competition.
Moreover, winning and losing are parts of humans nature, not always everyone wins, even the best athletes in the world doesn't wins or loses always. What i'm trying to say here is, when it comes to competition, it isn't about winning, its about having fun and strategies against competitors. Anyways, congrats to your children and may they achieve more in the future.

Hi Mam Zue…
Winnings. There’s no one that hate winning. Either wins in competition or in our academic. Yesterday, Malaysia won the football competition after 20 years lose. Malaysia get the gold medal for football. I’m proud to be Malaysian. At the Upten last night, there are groups of student at stall that have tv, just to watch the competition. For me, winning are important. But, if we‘ve try our best and we loss, we have to accept it then, improve our skills. So, do our best in all aspect of our live. Hope I’ll win all thing that I want.

Salam Pn Zue...

"Is it about Winning?" 1st of all Congratulation to Emir and Nadia. Both of them remind me to what i did in primary and secondary school.I have been join the school team in sports and also the others.

In sports or something else its not always about winning. When we lose also we can learn and work hard to achieve the target. We must work hard to achieve the dream.without any deeds we cannot success in what we want to.

For me,when i love to do something that i like,i would put my effort to success in what i do.I done that before and i also got the impressive result from what i work for and i proud of doing that.

Support from the family and friends also helps us and give us spirits to achieve our goal. The determination to win something also will boost our mind to win..As long as we work hard on something what we do its does not matter win or lose. The important thing we put some effort on that. :) <3

Sport has united people all around the world.
Every man will learn something good from sport.
For me,sport is the best teacher.
Motivation,dedication,discipline,hardwork,no matter win or lose.
Like people have said,
'Quitters never win and Winners never quit!'
