UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2008

Hi everybody. Do you know that this is the forth time UNITEN organizes this prestigous event? Well, rowing used to be between Oxford and Cambridge universities, the two giants in the scholarly world. Now, it has come to Putrajaya, and it has not only involved local schools (SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), 16(1), 11(1) and SMK Alam Shah), private and public universities (UM, UTM, USIM, UIA, USM, UMS, UTHM, UNITEN, MMU, UNIKL), but also received participation from universities in Singapore (NUS), the Philippines (Ateneo), Hong Kong (HK Baptist & City U), and Japan (Shiga).

Among the VVIPs at the URI 2008 were Y Bhg Dato' Sri Che Khalib, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Y Bhg Prof Ir Dr Mashkuri, Vice Chancellor, UNITEN, His Excellency Alejandro Fernandez, Ambassador of Peru to Malaysia, and His Excellency Masahiko Horie, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia. Like many other events, we also had entertainment from local artists, particularly Aris Ariwatan...(he also sang my favourite numbers....hmmmmm.

Were the results surprising? So...so....may be...Shiga University, Japan, for example, won so many medals until most of us thought they would win the overall championship. UNITEN has definitely improved its performance and standing at second place, and has done us proud with its accomplishments (Well done Seelan: my ex-student). Nevertheless, UTM was the overall champion, for the third time. WOW!:) They must be really strong, complete with strategies and techniques. Let's quickly learn from them, ya...

Now, how do I know about all these? Of course, I helped to emcee the event. It was a tiring, but interesting job coz I got to see the results before any of the spectators or the vvips could take a peek...he..he..i'm not sure how apt a female voice helps to set the stage, though...something less (5%) than ESPN commentators, or the Olympics in Beijing, I bet.

Comment: Proud to see UNITEN supporters there, and my very own students. Here they are, Firdaus, Anwar, and Adam, posing with the medals and winning trophies. p.s. I've got their permission to post this photo in my blog.

As for the rest, please take time to participate and support campus activities. It may take away your weekend or holidays, but experience as such will help you in so many ways, ultimately. Academic takes care of the hard-skills or content. As for soft-skills, it's something we can only polish and develop via involvement in leadership, competitions, and participation in activities, clubs and societies.

We shall meet again next year, in the 5th UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2009. Hopefully:) *** after reading the comments from anonymuos and maisarah, guess I will help to promote the event via my blog.

Madam.Shiga U is a japanese university.zzzzzz

First of all I wasnt intended to attend that activity however my friend annoyed me and forced me to go.Why there where so less supporters?i blame the advertisement from the commitee. We students received the emel informing about the "UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2008" around friday evening which was quite late.A lot of student already went home. They should have done that a week earlier. To tell you the truth, they were only 7 of us in the bus during that morning excluding the volunteers.I better not comment more about the event. :D

Salam pn.zue,

i'm one of your silent reader, finally commenting.. :)

Probably our team can win if they can get the supports from the students. It's a pity not many of the students know about this event. And also some lecturers that conducted test on Sunday mornings. Big portions of students missed their opportunities to attend the event.

But this year was more happening than last year, in terms of participation from other universities and also support from students. Let's hope next year will be better and finally win.

Hi Anonymuos,

thanks, dear. typo eror there, readers, and I've corrected it. Shiga is from Japan. zzzzz...sorry:)

I must say Hi:) to maisarah...he..he..what took you so long, dear? Hope to hear more from you after this, yeah.
I agree. It's a pity that most of our students can't be there to join us in supporting our grand event. I was talking to Seelan (double scull) about the matter. He also had a paper that Saturday afternoon, and I just told him to prioritize and concentrate on the event. I pray that he will get good grades when he finally sits for the paper. Wonder when Seelen will speak up on this blog...hmmmmmm:)

I totally agree with maisarah where the team always needs supprt from us to win it..Sometime I think why don't we as students build a cheerleader club to support them..Perhaps I can be one of them because I never saw a cheerleader club before in our campus..do we have them???

Looks like Fydo has got some limelight here...wow:) Well, for now, i really like the cheerleading idea. My ex-student, REDIA, was a cheerleader at school, Convent Bukit Nenas I guess, and a really talented one indeed. Please contact her for some tips. It's about time we have a proper cheerleading team (minus short short skirts, of course) in UNITEN. The staff had a cheerleading competition last year, and IKAL was the runner-up. Students should have it too, and my daughter Farah would love to join you in this effort. She's so into cheerleading, but the school does not have the club..so, maisarah can now take up the idea to MPP? MURNI? ILMU? then we'll win the championship next year:) oh ya..boys can also join...

Hi Pn.Zue,

First of all, I'm so jealous of you guys who had got the opportunity or were able to went there and supported the team! Just like what anonymuos had said, the notice was late... Unfortunately,I was already at my home when I opened my email & knew about it.If I knew about it earlier, I would definitely not go home & join to give support! As a matter of fact, I do enjoy watching rowing sport. Oh well, I guess it's just not my luck. Anyway, congrats to Uniten for getting the second place! Awesome! :)

assalamulaikum pn.zue.

first and foremost, this is the first time im write a comment in your blog. hmmm. about the rowing competition, the advertisement does not work very much, even thought alot of banner had been hanging around, but it does not attract much student to go watching the event. im also in this condition. uniten should make more advertisement. not only in the form of banner, but also through the electronic media such as televisyen and also radio this can attract not only student but also outside people to watch this tournament. actually, i wanna go there, but unfortunaely i do no have any transport to go. furthermore during that weekend i had a stomacache. i feel like im missing a very big event. 1 of the uniten representative was my friend's neibourhod, he said that our team doing a small mistake. if not, we gonna win that tittle. i think that all i wanna say bout this topic. i cant wait to comment your new post.

Dr. Zue said...

hi ara, miss reading your comments, really... now, our haziq...definitely...no wonder I saw him busy moving back and forth and i thought he was there for the booths...please send my regards to him...congratulations 2. so what event did Haziq join? single scull? double scull? coxed four? coxed eight? nevertheless, with his contribution, we became runner-up, yeah...next year, we wanna be champion!!! when will haziq write in the blogosphere?:)

finally i entered this blog(because of the 0.5%)
sorry,Pn Zue!!

actually i knew about this competition from my roommate. He was one of the volunteer for the competition. We had discussed about this issue after we saw this article. He said he was quite disappointed with them because the university got all the facilities for the team but they still didn't manage to win the competition.I think they must put some effort on training and try to win a gold medal for UNITEN. Hope to see UNITEN rowing team be the champion in future rowing competition.

ha..ha..ha..kelvin, nice try, but you need to be consistent in your practice to be awarded appropriately. So, continue to practice reading and reacting via the class blogosphere, ok...as for norex, witty and cheeky..there..we can also have boys in our cheer team, ahaaa....all z best.

hye puan zue,..

First of all, I want to say sorry coz i've taken very long time to drop by your blog.huhuhu.....

As UNITEN's students, I feel proud that our team got the second place. It's better than we got nothing, right?
I think our team will have chance to be the winner if they get support from all students and lecturers..(like maisarah said).
Besides that, our team also have brighter chances to win if all of them get enough training and rest, especially from assignment and test..hehehe....
p/s: this week burden me a lot..huhuhu

To fydo, don't prasan2 tau....I can only give you 20% handsome than 100%...heheheh

hi pn zue,

First of all I would to thank u, for ur support to us. hehe.. So I guess u already know that im also a UNITEN rowers.. Btw did u saw me that day? Im really sorry that I didn’t notice u, I must be busy being a photographer for the rowing club since I didn’t have any event that day. Oh, for your information this ‘URI 2008’ I join the double scull. I with my partner just manage to get 5th place where we loose to SHIGA,HONG KONG,UTM and UTHM in semifinal round. But the important thing we manage to get point for the overall champion. But sadly we only manage to become runner-up. Insyaallah, next year we will try our best to become overall champion and make UNITEN proud. So pls give ur best support to us. will ya?? chaiyok2.

@Kelvin, fyi this university only provide the ergo meter for the team to practice at MPH but if we need to practice in water we need to go to Kelab Tasik Putrajaya ourselves. Plus when it comes to training UNITEN didn’t give us allowance for the food. We need to use our own money first then we can claim it from them. It’s hard for us as a student to represent our university but this small matter they didn’t look up to it.

p/s: Anyway if pn zue or other want to know more about rowing club do visit our UNITEN ROWING CLUB blog for further information.

Hi, Pn. Zue
In my opinion, rowing is a sport in which athletes race against each other on river, lakes or on the ocean, depending upon the type of race and uniten members' discipline. The boats are propelled by the reaction forces on the oar blades as they are pushed against the water. The sport can be both recreational, focusing on learning the techniques required, and also needs high mentality in order to achieve the target. It is also one of the oldest Olympic sports. So, i think that uniten rowing team should enlarge their members and encourage all the members for the future. I wish all the best for uniten rowing team in next time.

Hello there Pn.Zue
Remember me? I know it has been ages since I've comment anything on your blog but like ara said we've got tons of assignment. But the main thing is I'm reading it now rite? Anyway, actually me and my friends did actually plan to go to the event to support the rowers but then something got in the way. Btw if I remember correctly it was raining on the day we wanted to go. But anyway congratz to uniten rowers cause they were still able to row wonderfully eventhough it was raining and all. Plus there's always a next time rite. Maybe they'll get to be the overall champion in the next tournament. Who knows rite? For now, keep up the good work ait!

i am just overjoyed with the success of this UNITEN rowing competition. Recently, i have heard lots about Rowing in UNITEN and it is certainly bringing a good name to the UNITEN community. MOreover, all walks of life should join this competition despite their age as this activity brings lots of benefits to the students. Therefore, i wish GOOD LUCK to the ROWING administration members to keep their hard work up and excel in their future undertakings!!!

hi..huhu..
i think uniten can win next year.
at least we don't give up earlier.

first and for most.... why we dont even know about this?! this is such a big event and uniten is keeping quiet about it.. he2 ok its our mistake too for not checking out things in the first place. anyway uniten got second eh? that is something should be proud of actually considering we are quite new to this sport. we would like to congrats the uniten team that bring our university name highier in front of the international university that took part in this competition. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!!

hi puan zue,
beside uniten rowing invitational 2008 event,i've something else to share,i think uniten should organize more rowing tournament among uniten's student,so,we can build stronger team and win the invitational competition next year..

Anonymous said...

hye pn. zue. in my opinion,we should improve our skills on rowing since we too new to this sport. maybe we can send our rowers to rowing camps and rowing clinique in order to empowering their skills much better. although we still new to this sport, but we prove to the others that we can get into top 3 without enough experience. so,if we have enough experience and dedication,we can win this. congratulations to uniten rowing team.

Greetings Pn. Zue!

I beg to differ on your comment; "rowing used to be between Oxford and Cambridge universities". It suggests that rowing was only practised in these schools which is not true. I believe you were referring to the annual Boat Race held between Oxford and Cambridge. Actually, modern competitive rowing races pre-date The Boat Race by nearly a full century. FYI, The Boat Race on the Thames was first flagged off in 1856. Besides, rowing is one of the oldest events in the Olympic Games. Competitive rowing has gained a huge foot hold in the West, but not so in Malaysia. Many have not seen or even heard of such a sport and the local rowing community is very small albeit growing slowly.

Regarding our team's performance, I believe our crews would have performed better if we had proper training and a larger pool of rowers work with. UNITEN needs a rowing coach and more rowers if we are going to bring back the Champion's Trophy next year. Currently, the team trains itself based on experience with little help from Unit Sukan on basic fitness. I believe even an amateur coach with a little more experience than us can perform wonders on the crews that we have currently.

Please visit www.unitenrowingclub.blogspot.com for information, new and updates on UNITEN's Rowing Club/Team.
