17.08.08 Happy Birthday EDSoc.

English Debate Society (a group of people sharing the same interests/ enthusiasm).

This is a great day, one that marks a meaningful journey for oratory endeavour in UNITEN, the beginning of successful episodes for undergraduates who see the importance of persuading, convincing, and influencing via speaking. 17th August 2006, is a day to remember, indeed. The acronym EDSoc. was coigned, and it shall remain forever.

EDSoc. is more than a complete package for an undergraduate who wants to improve his speaking skills in English.

Its main aim is to put together speaking enthusiasts, English speaking undergraduates, and those who wish to see themselves as university debaters and public speakers. One of the main concerns is to ensure multi-racial population - and we've discovered this yardstick viable in UNITEN, where the language of instruction is English. Here, almost half if not all of the students are eloquent and comfortable using the English language in their everyday conversation, discussion, and presentation.

The president, Navin, and Vice President, Vivek have worked so hard, gaining strong support from all EDSocians to make it happen at EDSoc. The thrust of EDSoc. is debating. We organize debate workshops and tourneys for all to learn and appreciate debating as a skill, science and art. Debating alumnus, Yoong How, helped us run the first debate workshop. Thanks:) dear. Together, we've taken our debating teams to various platforms and places. The teams have participated in tourneys in IIUM, MMU, UITM Perlis, and they have travelled as far as NUS Singapore, to experience what debating entails in real life. Until today, the senior members have successfully formed four teams, and i must say I'm so proud of them.

Other than debating, EDSoc. also grooms telents for public speaking. We organized our first Public Speaking competition in 2007, and it was a very exciting one, indeed. The champion was Hemalan, and runner-up was Sneha. The themes were "Black is White" and "Opening Pandora's Box". This year, we shall organize a National Public Speaking Competition, and we surely hope to see huge participation from the undergraduates. Besides, we also send our members to join the Star-HSBC National Public Speaking Competition.

EDSoc. will be able to contribute to more undergraduates if we only obtain greater participation and support in terms of membership and participation. In my own class, I always take the opportunity to advise my students to make time for EDSoc. Undergraduates should realize that communicative competence is essential in today's employability challenge, and that it is not limited to the English classes. There are other avenues, like EDSoc., where undergraduates can improve their English speaking skills.

Lastly, to all EDSocians, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. To the rest, we welcome your membership and contribution. Let's all grow with EDSoc. and reap the benefits of active involvement in campus activities. Be a debater, public speaker, leader, active member, and you help to make life more colourful, successful and meaningful at UNITEN.

Let's make it happen:)

Sincerely,Puan Zue

To start off, I’d like to express my best compliments to EdSoc for achieving its first milestone yet. A year has already pass for EdSoc and it would be appropriate to reflect upon the club's accomplishment in order to set the next target. Has EdSoc achieved enough? Does it not crave for more? Obviously, every club demands more reputation and prestige. However, EdSoc is different. It is a boon for us all to enhance our English speaking skills, the international linguistic language used worldwide. Many of us students fail to realize the importance and value of English. Without it, you'll be unable to communicate in majority of the countries.

Finally, to all the readers, I'd like to remind you once again that the EdSoc is meant for us. If we fumble during a presentation during our working life, it'll be irreversible and damaging towards our career even if we had repented. Nevertheless, blundering in a debating session that EdSoc offers would prove to be constructive as there are room to make mistakes and learn out of it. Therefore, I urge everyone to join EdSoc. I do understand the feelings and situation that one faces while public speaking such as experiencing stage frights and lack of confidence. However, you need to start embracing your inner talents for a better future because all journeys in life must begin with the first step.

EDsoc. has given me alot in experiencing debate among professionals. it challenges the mind and can really be a confidence booster.. on that note, a look at the polls, 63% haven't done public speaking before and the main reason being lack of confidence as about 30% said... To have a lack of confidence at the varsity level is really quiet dangerous, i mean the next big thing after this would be working life! imagine that...

So guess we have to take matters into our own hands, to build up confidence, charisma, flair.. the only way u can build confidence i guess is to put urself more out there.. get involved, participate. We wont be so lucky to find a pn. zue wherever we are, to always engage you in developing speaking skills...and with a smile i might add... hahaha..

hye Pn.Zue & every single one who commented ,

Firstly, I would say I'm really impressed and proud reading the comments here. The club that was once doubted on it's capability has reached to an extend where nearly all the juniors are well known of it's achievements. Anyway I would re-post my post in my blog here :
_______________________________________
17.8.2008~Yahoo EDsoc. turns 2 years old today officially... This was the exact date when EDSoc. was established in UNITEN two years ago, together with our senior members and Pn.Zue, most importantly.

If I recall two years ago, we were small, only few of us, together with Pn.Zue, we decided that we have to initiate a English Debate Society in UNITEN. Started with a small group, only few members back then, those who are still in EDSoc. are Navin, Madhav and I. We have gone through so many hardships and problems so far esp during the starting, and now we can say proudly, EDSoc. is no more new club, were are a young club, thriving for success. Started with:

English Debate Workshop 2007

IIUM Debate League

1st UNITEN Public Speaking Competition

MMU Women IV 2007

UNITEN Invitational Debate

Singapore Debate Open 2007

Arau Open 2008
~Still waiting for pics...

As a big family EDSoc. has evolved a lot.The leadership and unity in EDSoc. is undeniable where when there is something to be settled, the whole family will be there. That;s the spirit of EDSoc. that pushes the stamina of each of us. In this birthday I would thank all the senior members, members & last but not least, our Founder, Pn.Zue. Without any of them EDSoc. wouldn't be a reality, where we are known in Malaysia and Asia Pacific Region in 2 years time-span. I'm proud and happy with every single member of EDSoc. Special thanks to Pn.Zue's kids, Farah, Nadia, & Emir, where they never missed any of our activities, there are our "Super Junior" members. :-)

Upcoming events:

2nd UNITEN Public Speaking Competition (which is set to be open to any IPTA & IPTA)-tentatively 10 & 11 October 2008

Debate Workshops

UNITEN Invitational Debate

UNITEN IVs

and many more tourneys outside of UNITEN...

Hopefully EDSoc. blossoms with power and energy, and let us together make it happen!!!

wow, what a great blog. first and foremost, this is my first time having an assignment through a blog however i certainly will make it my best. congratulation to EDSoc for the great achievements and what the club done are such wonderful actions to help students improve not only language but self confidence and knowledge. by reading a few post from this blog i already learn few new words and it makes me eager to read more. as we never have the chance to meet yet, i'm hoping to see u soon either in class or outside. as for the assignment, why should undergraduates join EDSoc? for me, this society helps them to use English as their 1st language instead of their current language such as bahasa. for me,this is such a wonderful effort because from this opportunity, undergraduates have a jump stone to improve as english is 1 well known language in the world and if i'm not mistaken is currently most language used worldwide. for the 2nd and 3rd questions, am i interested on being next debater or public speaker? well, i used to be a debater however i quit because of my lack of knowledge about current issues and other stuffs. this is due to my laziness to read. if this can be helped, i do think of joining.
i think thats all for the assignment.. see u in class mrs zue.

hi pn.zue.....

after reading this article and some of the comments i really realise that english is the mostly used language in communication all over the world. If i have a oportunity to join this club i'll be happy to join it because this club sure can bring up my confidence level in public speaking. I had been joined in some school level competition such as debate and speech but mostly in bahasa or my own mother toungue. From this comments i'm sure that EDsoc dont just improve our public speaking skill moreover can improve our essay writing skills. Thats all for my assignment Pn.zue.......Thank you...

hello pn.zue !!!!

I the club such as EDsoc can help students to improve their confidence to speak english. Not only that english as a international language EDsoc will help students to get familiar with english. I hope EDsoc will keep up the good work. I had read some other post in this blog. There are plenty of new words would help me to write a bombastic essay. I hope i can put aside my fear to speak english infront of a crowd and i will gain confidence to speak a good english. I also hoping that Pn.ZUE will constantly guiding me to speak a better english. Thank you !!

Hello Pn Zue, first and foremost, I am amazed by the responds of students and bloggers in this 'virtual classroom' or blog. It's made me realised that English is a powerful language which enables us to relate and communicate peoples of different race, like here in Malaysia. I too would like to congratulate on the achievements and hard work in establishing this society. From the earlier comments since year 2008, I've read that you and your past team has been through lots of challenges and has sacrificed a lot to create this EDSoc.

Now back to the assignment at hand, EDSoc. is a society that promotes debating and public speaking which enhances a person's capability in English greatly. I suppose that why undergraduates should join EDSoc. is that, it helps students to be more confident, mature and fluent in their English while preparing them for working life and also generally, life. In the world now, English is still the most powerful language at hand and it's crucial to master it during our studying life. A good plant has to be nurtured since a seedling to grow up into a big and strong tree and this too is applied to us human beings. Besides that, mastering in English enables you to apply work overseas which offers better income and lifestyle.

As for the final 2 questions, I've always been amazed at my classmates during high school who're able to speak out loud, clearly and fluently during a debate.I never join any debate team in my high school years is due to my lack of confidence and knowledge. I would like to join EDSoc and see whether am I a debate or public speaking material.

Hi Pn Zue..
Firstly, nice blog!
It's very updated and very interesting to read.
Oh by the way, Alex here (Ngam Min Chuan)
I read a couple of other post besides this which you wanted us to read for an assignment.
I am sorry to hear of your lost Pn. Zue.
I didn't know the incident happened for I did not know who you were before. "Takziah" from me and my friends.

Coming back to the post, I never knew there was such a group/club like EDsoc.
I used to have a debate club in High school but....it's just not that well growing if you get what I mean.
I found EDsoc a very good way of improving our English and communication skills. Furthermore, it is indeed a good way to teach me how to communicate with the harsh working world in the years to come.

And for the two questions required for the assignment..

There is no doubt that EDsoc. is a English language society that enhance a students debate and public speaking skills. Even to students who is not a debater or speaker, EDSoc. can really improve students English language.
As English is widely use these days, EDcos. can help graduates to have better job opportunities.
English language is also important as an International recognize language to communicate with other cultures. Without proper English, a student can't be able to express themselves.
So what is the point of having so much head knowledge but not being able to share it with others?
Therefore to summarize, EDsoc is a very interesting society that every undergraduate should join to improve their English language, communicating and debating skills.

In addition for my answer to the 2nd question, I would really be glad if I could join EDsoc.
The only thing that is stopping me now is that I don't have confidence and the requirements to be a debater nor a speaker.
I do stammer sometimes, but my worst defects is that I have a big problem with spelling and pronouncing certain words correctly. Not pushing myself aside , I only hope that I can be ready first before I really adventure for EDsoc. So my answer now is NO but I will consider once I get my confidence in your class, Pn Zue.

Thank you.

Well, English Debate Society is sure a great club for students of UNITEN. Indeed it have provided a chance to every student in UNITEN to test their public speaking skills and their English level. For those who think their English is not good enough, they can always improve their knowledge of English through learning in this club. It's true that everyone of us have to learn on how to speak up for ourselves or express our own feeling in today's era. To be honest, i don't really know well about debating stuffs. But still, this club has given me a good impressions as this is the club that will provide the chance for everyone to improve their English, make new friends, and also learning new experience. Hope this club will grow strong and help more people in their English in the future.

After reading this article,I found that English is the important communicate medium in our daily life. The EDsoc is a great club for the undergraduates to strengthen their English especially their pronunciation.Having a precise and accurate pronunciation is the vital condition to ensure undergraduates to improve their confidence in daily speaking.
For undergraduates including me,who desire to learn and speak the English fluently, but hampered by a lack of confidence couple with the constraints of time,we can get the opportunity to speak more in English through EDsoc.I also believe that our English will improve through this society.
Lastly,I hope I can become more confident when speaking in English and I hope Pn. Zue will give your fully support and guidance to me.I really hope I can chuck my shyness and fear aside when speaking English in front of everyone and be a good speaker.Initially I can't understand this article fully so I keep looking up to my dictionary to understand some difficult words(to me).I know my English is not that good. However,I have tried my best to complete this assignment.Thank you.

Himmet said...

hello pn zue,

Based on this article, it is obvious that EDSoc is a vital society because of its role in encouraging students to speak their minds in english. Furthermore, one of its primary objectives is to ensure a multi-racial population of english speakers which is adherent to the 1 Malaysia campaign. Therefore, undergraduates should join EDSoc simply because english is the most important language in the world and EDSoc promotes the use of english. Another reason to join EDSoc is because we will have to use english as our primary mode of communication when we enter the work force. It is an inevitable fact, especially in the private sector. Hence, we should master the use of english early on. Incidentally, i believe that it would be more advantageous for students to join EDSoc as a public speaker. Public speaking is about presenting ideas in front of an audience in a calm and assured manner as well as thinking fast on your feet. Public speakers would also do well to charm the audience when delivering their oratory. Therefore, it is the perfect activity to hone one's social skills.

Thank you.

I'm Fatin from section 17. I'm kindly like to say that EDSoc is a society where all debaters and speakers are born in uniten. It polish and improve their skill in communication and language skills. For me,undergraduate should join EDSoc because it gives benefits for us such as for employalibity challenge. As we know nowdays,in order to get a better job, we do need a very good communication skill in ourselves and in a group work. This is because in order to get a better position in company,we do need to compete with others who also want the same thing. So,with a good language and the way we present ourselves will help us to get the position in the company. Not only that, we do need a better communication skill when we are interact with people when it comes to convince them to accept our opinions. By joining EDSoc, our communication skills can be polished and improve also it will gained our confident to speak out our opinions.

WOW! EDsoc is so awesome.. I hope that i have chance to see uniten debate team in action =). I have seen a few debate competition when i was in secondary school and i am very imperessed by them... In my opinion , debate not only involve in fluently in speaking English , but also need to have fast thinking. Surprisingly, they were able to form, 4 teams to encounter those exciting debate competition. I think , i should join the EDsoc, because it will definately enhance my public speaking skill and i also will be able to gain more experiance in life through debate. I believe that everyone will have the talent in public speaking deep inside us, but we need have alot of practices in everyday life to bring it out.'No Pain , No Gain ! '

AWESOME,
That was the first word up to my mind when I glance this blog. It is updated every single day and there will be answer to each one of the topic that have been aired. Hats off to Pn.Zue. Those topics are quite interesting to read. Its quite convenient to comment in this blog because those mistakes that had been made is been corrected in a well-mannered way. Those achievements shows their hard work in establishing this EDSoc. Since year 2008, this EDSoc. team member has shown their courage to keep maintaining their excellence till now.
Back to the assignment,
It cannot be deny that EDsoc. is a English language society that enhances students debate and also grooms talents for public speaking. I could figure out as many reasons why should undergraduates join EDSoc. One of them will be the self-confidence. It will be the main key that everyone should have to face their fear among the peoples in this world. It’s just like a tree without roots when the key is absence. This defence them when they fear to talk. As everyone voiced out that it’s a one step to be more mature, and gain more knowledge about the current issues and also the hot topics that always been aired at everywhere. I can say that once I step into this society I might not be the excellent member but I will be the one who improved to be a standard student. Apart from that, as undergraduate student their vocabulary have to be more strong as their age because it might filter them between grade A or grade B.In this EDSoc. a lot of ideas, new words or in a other word, bombastic words that have been used by the students to show that they are improving. Indirectly we can know those words and learn it. This what I guess it means sharing is caring. We care on each other to produce a well smart undergraduate student. As a conclusion that I can say that this EDSoc. is a unity that all those undergraduates have to be in to be more excellent among the excellence.
As for the final questions, those my classmates who excellent in debate were always encourage me during high school to speak out clearly, pronounce the words as it spells and talk fluently during a debate. However I guess I might still not a fully equipped with those criteria.Hence after get to know this EDSoc. and their benefits I might be a excellent one in a long way to go.I would like to join EDSoc and see whether am I a debate or public speaking material.

Hye ,Madam Zue..
As a inquisitiveness to improve my English language, I have decide to become a member in EDsoc. So that , the society can manage to encourage me to further my knowledge and skills in English language communication. In this world of modernisation , English language become the primary mode of communication as well as in our education. Through my survey, EDsoc was enhance many of the UNITEN student skills and styles to become a perfect debater among the international public speaking competition. It made me convinced that ,I`m on the right track. Furthermore, I have read a poem of Robert Frost which is `The Road Not Taken`; the poem becomes a life guide for me. Now, I challenge myself that do I can be a public speaker? I answered yes because I`m confident in myself rather than others. So, I need to bark up to achieve my ambition. Furthermore, there is no doubt that EDsoc can be a ambassador to undergraduates. The society can improve as much as better as their students were hardworking and intelligent. There is students opportunity to expertise their skills and compete among other students to become a hero of public speaker. As a student of UNITEN, I`m proud if I become a next debater. Therefore, as the opportunity are there..Don`t miss it guys..Have a blast..Before a full stop, Advance Happy Birthday EDsoc..And a very much thanks to Madam Zue to give a chance for me to comment in this virtual classroom....:)))

Evening Pn Zue….
What can I say here is there are various reason why should undergraduates join EDSoc. First, of course to improve our English no matter in writing or speaking. Here, we can share our opinion and speak out whatever in our mind. As what we were informed earlier, later in degree we need to do all the presentations, debates and everything that we are not used to be in foundation. So in my opinion, by joining EDSoc, it will help us to be more prepared and improve our vocabulary, pronunciations, grammar & so on later. We also would not face problems later while working. Besides, it will also intensify our confidence level which is really good. I’m quite interested in joining EDSoc but I’m not sure whether I can perform well. I have problems with my confidence level, knowledge, fear and lots more. I don’t know how to overcome this fear but it’s ok, I’ll take it as a challenge and I’m going to try and do my very best in your class. I have faith in you in guiding us and hoping everything will work smoothly. Thank you and See you then. =)

hello puan zue.

first of all, congrats to you that had create such a successful society. it was great to hear that EDSoc. have made a way out of Malaysia!

for the assignment, this EDSoc just like a confident booster to it's participants. Mostly the undergraduates suffer a lot because of this major weakness, lack of self confidence. So, by joining EDSOc, they can boost up their confidence to higher and higher level till they can speak comfortably and wisely in front of public. The next thing, English is a must in every jobs that can satisfy your demand of high income and better living. Without any doubt, I believe that EDSoc can drive undergraduates to improve their English skill.

And for your last question,I would be saying no for this time being. But who knows, for the times i'm in your classes, I'll be attracted to join this EDSOc. For now, I'm still suffering as my self confidence absolutely under my foot. I can't say out loud in front of other students ever since in high school. It's not that I never tried to overcome this, but I just can't. Maybe I will be saying yes in future, when my confidence is higher than present. I hope so :)

Thank you.

hi M'am...opps sorry , i mean hi Puan Zue.I'm still trying to adjust myself so bear with me. :)

First and foremost I would like to give a big congratulations on the birth of EDSoc. and also Happy Birthday..I'm very pleased to write a few words in this blog (it's an assignment) that you have created. Now i can brag to my friends that i have such a "COOL" lecturer.

Anyway let's get to the point shall we.So in my honest opinion EDSoc. will really help lots and lots of students over here. Not just by grooming the next top debator in the University but it also provide assistance and guidance to students on how they could use the language powerfully. As you have mention before in class we should be able to have the power to influence others and to motivate people through the power of our speeches for example the current president of the United States , Barack Obama who give such amazing speech that blow the mind's of the people. Moreover, EdSoc. also provide guidance for those who wish to excel in public speaking too.I think that this society should be joined by every student here because public speaking is really a great tool to be used when you are in the working environment. With the techniques been given im pretty sure the person who is great in public speaking will always strike his/her interview session because how you present yourself will make a whole lot of difference in the working world. Who knows?you might even get promoted easily because you are great in speaking. So as a debator myself (during the secondary days) I would really be interested in this society as it could help me to polish my debating skills.Techniques on how you persuade the crowd , how you reinstate your point , how to reply a point of information , and so much more!!

Last but not least , once again I would like to wish you guys a wonderful belated happy birthday and I do hope I would hear more from this society. So keep up with the good work. :)

Hi, Pn Zue.

EDSoc is really good for those student which are good in english and also good for those student that they wish to improve their english.

Besides, it is a place to show our talents and we can get more experience.

Those skills like public speaking and leadership are not just theoretical, but can be practical also.

Nowadays, we are lack of confidence and there are no platform to practice.

EDSoc has provide a good platform, so i think no matter english is good or not, we should have to try and improve ourself from time to time.

We should appreciate those chances and become stronger.

Good-better-best, never let it rest.

Hi Pn Zue,

After viewing this article, I found that EDsoc is a great platform for UNITEN students to improve their skills in debating, as well as giving speeches in public occasions. As we know, mostly of us do not have English as our first language. Hence, it is a great opportunity for us to enhance our fluency in speaking English. Instead, by joining the club, we can make new friends with the members. With the interactions between the members, we are able to learn new things from each other, such as ways to give effective speeches.

As most people do, I am lack of confidence in speaking English. I believe that if I join this club, I can gain more experience of giving speeches with the involve in the activities and practices organized by the club. If I am given an opportunity, I am glad to join EDsoc to improve my skills in English. Thank you.

It’s a nice writing Pn Zue! But i’m very sorry to hear about your lost. By the way, if I’m not mistaken, is that your daughters that sing a song in ladies nite before?hee...I’m extremely glad to have you as my English lecturer. Its because i’m not good in English actually.Instead of you are seriously trying to make all of us a speaker, not only a speaker but an extraordinary and prominent speaker,so why not i as an undergraduate also try to join this EDsoc.Inspite of i never participate in any debate or any other talk, but i’m interested in such this society.Hmm..furthermore by joining this EDsoc,i’m sure its good for one’s creativity. This is because, the speaker has to keep up with the news, for self-improvement besides being a form of entertainment in their speaking.Studies have suggested that people who taking part in talk or debate are more creative than those who are not.As such, its the best way to acquire knowledge and information.Last but not least,i’m sure many of undergraduate will make an attempt to become a speaker.Thanks.

Hai Pn.Zue
I'm Dhineshkaran a/l Balkaran.
AWESOME,
That was the first word up to my mind when I glance this blog.
However I guess I might still not a fully equipped with those criteria.Hence after get to know this EDSoc. and their benefits I might be a excellent one in a long way to go.I would like to join EDSoc and see whether am I a debate or public speaker.

A very good day to Puan zue and my fellow students.

To be honest, when i heard the name EDsoc, the first thing that came to my mind was probably (EDUCATION SOCIETY) taking the first 2 letters for Education and first 3 for Society. So yes, i am pretty much surprised that it actually stands for English Debate Society.

I'm pretty pleased that UNITEN has such a platform set up for students who want to discover the speaker within, and EDsoc opens a whole new world of possibilities for those who never have the chance to speak up or voice out. But i have to disagree with the thought that students are eloquent and comfortable using the English language in their everyday conversation, discussion, and presentation here in UNITEN. I have to say that it's not true, and there are still many students who struggle and find it hard to blurt out even a few sentences without stuttering. I sincerely hope with all my heart that something can be done for these people, and if EDsoc is the answer to their troubles, then so be it.

Finally, i would like to congratulate the success and achievement of EDsoc and wish EDsoc a Very Happy Birthday.

Good morning, Puan Zue. I have not seen you in person Puan Zue, because i have not entered any of your classes yet. This was because i was in the class of another lecturer. However, i must admit that the moment my friends told me about you, i read your e-mail for the 1st assignment and immediately decided to add/drop for your class. You are the type of lecturer i'll need to make English learning more proffesional and fun !

Back to the assignment, i wouldn't even know that EDSoc exists, if i hadn't read your blog. I strongly agree that undergraduates should join EDSoc. I have observed that many students including those doing their degree, are not good communicators. Despite being tremendously intelligent, they are handicaps when it comes to words.EDSoc would definitely provide students with the correct methods and ways to armor their speaking. Having workshops, would immensely increase the students' confidence level.Having been a leader in various organisations in the past, i believe, with proper techniques and enough skills, one can be persuasive and convincing.
Bringing together speaking enthusiasts definitely brings speaking to a whole new level, and this is possible through EDSoc.Being a public speaker myself, i am really interested in joining EDSoc. The National Public Speaking Competition surely interests me. I really think, people can create their own identity through their speaking skills. As said by Robert Lane Gren, "You are what you speak."
Happy belated birthday, EDSoc! Thank you, Puan Zue.

well,answering to the assignment given,

why should undergraduates join EDSoc?
as far as i concern,English is the 1st international language after all.in order to improve your English, the best step to be taken into account is joining a club which could help you getting better in English.By joining the club, our conversation skill, listening skill and communication skill would be sharpen trough the socialization among the group member. If and only if your English is great, well, nothing is perfect in this world. On the pathway of getting the perfection, you'll learn to be better though.

would you be interested to become the NEXT debater? NEXT public speaker?
i was a debater before then when i was in secondary school.even it's only 2 years experience, the feeling in participating in debate is great!you could boost your confidence level to maximum level.so,for now,the interest is still there.I would love to be a debater again.but not in the moment yet.i need to focus upon my study first.when things get better,i would love to enter the field once again. :)

hehehe..
by the way,
i think there is absolutely no problems in learning english..
the major thing about public speaking is lack of confident..
confident,it affects us on whatever things that we do..
when we have less confident, everything that we'll do become upside doen.
everything in this world that make sense becomes like a total crap..
functionless..
for me,by having EDsoc in our live,
it can make us better.
it will teach us the greatest thing that we cant find anywhere, that is experience.
people say practice makes perfect..
by joining this kind of activities,
we can develope our skill in public speaking as well as self confident..
lastword,EDSoc is a very good club to join to develope selfconfident and also build up a good way to socialize..

In my point of view the EDsoc able to bring tons of benefits to the undergraduates in uniten.I believe that this society will become a good platform for those whom have hidden interest in debating and public speaking. For sure the activities and competition conduct by the EDsoc will help the students to unleash their hidden talent as well as getting to know themselves better.Personally i think that this society will indirectly fulfill uniten's generates professional mission.Professional here by means the ability to speak and to have the courage to be standing in front of the crowd and express their point of view without the feeling of shyness and any hesitation. From what i observed, people nowadays, especially malaysians have the ability to write, but when comes to speak in english there's always going to be a problem for them. This can't be continuously happening as in the future, in any job interview, english will be the main concern.Being an unemployed 4 flat graduates is definitely not an option.I will definitely sign myself up for the EDsoc if i were given the chance to do so.Clearly this society is all i ever needed to improve myself. I feel that it can help me to improve my commuunication skill as well as to boost myself esteem.I hope that Pn.Zue will makes the imposibble, possible for me.

Regarding this article, it is evident that EDsoc plays an important role in the development of english. It encourages students to confidently communicate and interact in english. The other issue which is highlighted here is that EDsoc promotes a multi-racial interaction between students which is also in line our country's hottest concept , The 1 Malaysia concept. Organizations like EDsoc will help build unity among our students. Another one of Edsoc’s importance is it develops their skills(our students) in the most widest spoken language on the planet. English is like the world communication tool which is second to none , not even to Spanish. Joining EDsoc as a public speaker on the other hand gives you an advantage and the courage to speak up at important times. We tend not to share our ideas in meetings and meet-ups at times , but if you are a public speaker you will have the upper hand to suggest and lay out your ideas and thoughts. Even in the working era like in the private sector , english is the language medium used , so having a good command of is essential and by joining EDsoc it can be achieved.

If given an opportunity I’d love to join Edsoc to be a debater as it would train me up, in ways to say and support my points and opinions, in the real world rather than being timid and not expressing myself.

Hi puan Zue,

Frankly speaking, it is highly essential to know the language for communication. In general, the most popular language is English. In this computer age, English is the only language that any one can understand. So to say, it has become as an ideal language for expressing our feelings. First, we have to learn the language and then we have to gain fluency in the language. Unless we have the fluency in English language, it would not be possible to work with the computer. If we do not know English, then we would be in need of a translator to do the job.The first stage of learning this language would be very interesting. Once we are fluent with the alphabets, slowly we can learn many words. It would always be better to follow the method of reading first, then writing. The next step is learning the grammar of the language. It is quite simple and very systematic compared with other languages. There are certain rules and regulations for each and every topic in grammar of this language. As long as we follow the rules and regulations, it would be a difficult task to make mistakes. we would gain that much guidance from the grammar. The presentation is the most important factor in communicating our feelings. So, naturally we must be sure while we are presenting. what we really wish to say. At any point, do not try to write or speak, beyond your capability. Even if it is a small and simple sentence, it would reach the receiver perfectly. This is our basic idea. Slowly, we can improve the standard of our language by practice. If we know to form the sentences, it is more than enough to go deep into the subject.

I also read the comments sent by other students. thus, it make me interest to learn about english more deeply. i also have confindent to improve my skills thorough learn this language.

Thank you.......

Morning Pn.Zue, for starters this blog,EDSoc is awesome. There are many comments posted by students. It's very useful because by reading those comments, it made me realize that English is a very important language in our life.
For the assignment,
undergraduates like us should participate EDSoc frequently as it helps students to be more self-confident, mature, brave and more fluent in their English as well in themselves, while enable them to cope survival in the future, which is also working life.
Besides that, new words or ideas are often shown by students in the process to improve. That's why by joining EDSoc, we'd be able get a chance to learn.

For the last 2 questions, as i know it is not easy to speak out loud or fluently in front of people, so why don't we take a chance to be a debater or public speaker, right? So in conclusion, I fully agree in trying out to be the Speaker and Debater.

Thank You.

It is evident that communication skills play a major role in our life. With good communication skills, we can easily commune with other people, synergize, cooperate and also understand mutually. By joining EDsoc, interested undergraduates can improve their english and also public speaking skills. I too like other people have my own weaknesses such as lack of confidence, and i believe by joining EDsoc i can learn more.

I have been studying in Uniten for almost 6 months and I dint hear or see any promotion about EDSoc. Is really an awesome and unique society as we can train ourself to be a better leader here. Besides that, we can get a lot of extra knowledge by being a debater. I strongly suggest to have a better promotion on this society so that students in Uniten get the opputunity to train in public speacking. I notice that there are students who have great idea in thier mind but they don't dare to voice out in public as most of the students only force to do public speacking in class. By joining this society, it might help the shy one to make their presentation more attractive then just reading the script. Practice make perfect, and EDSoc would be a great environment for us to practice in public speaking, English speaking and enlarge our knowledge as well.

Based on this article and the comments friends have shared, undergraduates should join EDSoc. is because that language plays an important role in order to deliver your thoughts to the public efficiently. But, as the social network such as Facebook and etc. that existed for past few years, people are so lazy to go out socialize which leads to poor communicating skills. As this goes on and on, they lose thier ability to speak good English language, and then causes them to felt shy to speak up for thier thoughts. So, I can strongly suggested that joining EDSoc. for undergraduates is a good move to improve communicating skills in order to catch up thier social life in university and bring thier thoughts to a better level in thier career in a form of speaking it out. And last but not least, as an undergraduates, I am very interested to join this EDSoc. and become the next debater and hopefully next public speakers for the youth.

Hi again Puan Zue. Looks like u couyldn't receive my previous post. So, here i go again... haha

To be honest, i did not had a clue about what EDSoc is really about, till i read your blog. Looks like this is only the start to many more information i may gain from this virtual classroom.

English is enhancing and getting important day by day.Since EDSoc is a place to bring speaking enthusiasts together, not only do the good students improve their speaking abilities, EDSoc, will also be able to inspire students that are poor in their daily English speaking. Furthermore, participation in debate and public speaking competitions by EDSoc, will allow students to realise their speaking potential. EDSoc can also serve as a platform for talented students to exhibit their speaking skills in public. Undergraduates that intend to be a leader in the future, should certainly join EDSoc, as a start to be persuasive, convincing and influential.I am sure, through the EDSoc workshops, students especially undergraduates will be able to learn and apply all these qualities.EDSoc is an extra effort to improve English speakers.According to Robert Lane Green, you are what you speak! Therefore, EDSoc can be the reflection of what type of a person he/she is.

As a school representative for public speaking, being the next public speaker certainly excites me.

Assalamualaikum, Pn.Zue,

First off, I would say that at first I never would have thought that such a society exist in UNITEN if not for this virtual classroom. Therefore, thanks for the class.

Regarding the EDSoc, I think it is great that there is such a society that is a big help to students whether they are eloquent in the English language or not.

Through debating , students will not only learn how to give a good speech but also indirectly helps them writing a good essay. Albeit, knowing that fact and practising them are two different matters. That being said, I believe most students have that in them to give a good speech as speaking is the basic communication medium for humans. But personally, I think the main impedance would be the nervousness of speaking to the public. I mean speaking in a group is jittering enough to some. Imagine having to suddenly give a speech in front of a larger group of people.

Therefore, it is great that there is a society to let students practice their speaking skills in confidence. GO EDSoc !!

Hi Puan Zue,

Sorry for the late reply as I did not receive your email last weeekend.

Let me begin with the term English, "ENGLISH" is a profound language among everyone in this world or more like a universal language I would say.It is the main branch of communication among people from different regions of the world as it is easily understood and spoken. This is why I find that English is one of the most important language that one should have full command over. The fact that there was a club like EDSoc that could bring out the very best of every particular breathing and living individual is actually a god send. The introduction of such a society was a brilliant and extraordinary idea I would like to say.

On top of that,I really think that the undergraduates should get involve in this particular society but the truth is the youth's nowdays are losing passion in the day's where roman's sat around the great hall and debated about every single statement that ever existed.Debate and public speaking is becoming a dying art among the future generation.Youth's nowdays are more towards technology and entertainment compared to expanding the horizons of the human mind. This is why therefore stress out that we all should work together with Puan Zue to lit up the internal flames inside our fellow comrades among to show them the true meaning of not only being a debater or a public speaker but also the greatness of understanding and learning "ENGLISH".

This is how much this language means to me Puan Zue and how important it is to me that EDSoc remains beating alive and never fades away.

Thank you for your time,
Yours sincerely,
Pavendhran

Okay, well, since everyone has "written" their minds on this matter, I feel as though there is nothing much left to say. And before I begin, it's me Ikmal. And since everyone is posting their student IDs, I'm going to post mine as well.

Mine is AM84969.

Take that.

Anyways, horsing around aside, let's get straight to the matter at hand. First and foremost, most of us Foundies (Yeah, I use the slang), don't even know the existence of EDSoc. And to those who does, well, lucky you. Most of the people here who commented on the matter most likely talked about EDSoc.'s contributions and what it can do for them. Well, I think that is not what this post is about. This post should be one of suggestions and support. No offense to those who did it earlier.

Now, EDSoc.. Debating is somewhat hard for the people in Malaysia. As I understand it, most Malaysians are scared to speak their minds since we grew up in a society where our mistakes get laughed upon. And all that changed for me when I had the golden opportunity to study in the States, where opinions DO matter. They take public speaking and voicing opinions to a whole new level. Everyone doesn't have the slight amount of shyness in telling people what they think. And this, in my faithful opinion, is what EDSoc. should be all about. It should establish ideas in the students' minds. Establishing ideas based on facts and experience to change the mind to be more aggressive in defending their ideas. I for one, am a shy person, but when push comes to shove, I defend my ideas and opinions to the very core. EDSoc. should establish itself to train those who are shy to express what they think publicly and if not, privately. Training should be made to push the students' to the limits and force them to talk. This is how it should be done, and this is how it would work. EDSoc. should be promoted not only through mouths but also through other mediums such as events, competitions, and even games. Start small, and you'll wind up big. The larger the crowd, the better. I know that some people will criticize what EDSoc. would force them to do if they joined, and this is exactly the mindset that we have to change. In all sincerity, EDSoc. will establish itself as a great medium for people who wants to be great leaders. Great leaders only come from great followers. And this is the path they should take. Follow through with what the club does, and in time, the leadership quality inside them will be instilled so deep, it reaches to the very core of their hearts.

Without wax,
Ikmal Hakim

Good morning again Puan Zue,

It seems that you did not receive my reply on the EDSoc and therefore I’m going to post my comment again. The one vital fact that I would like to say about EDSoc was that it is a brilliant idea to organise such a society that focuses on the main stream of international communication line which is obviously “ENGLISH”.We ourselves know that learning English is crucial to ensure that we have a firm grasp on the basic concepts and vocabulary of English.I’m not saying that other languages are of no importance but I notice from my personal point of view that English is becoming a big hit among the citizens of the world. It’s as if English is like a plague travelling from one continent to the next.Sooner or later, don’t be surprise that English is going to be considered as an international language among all the countries. This is why I think that the creation of such a society can bring about a lot of greatness to the students of uniten.

On top of that, the activities that are organised by EDSoc are also very intellectual and can generate the human mind to think out of the box.For instance, the debate team is a brilliant idea to build inner confidence among the students to ensure that they will never ever be afraid to face any obstacles in their life. The concept of public speaking which is also a daily thing where the EDSoc organises actually nurtures students like us to think beyond the horizons of the universe. Moreover,it also help’s us to think in a mature manner and take things around us seriously.

English is a very big word and it’s existence play’s a major role in our daily life. This is why I would like to stress out that we should take the initiative to try and master this language as it can bring about a lot of greatness to our life’s.Keep in mind that just learning a language is very tough but having the passion to learn something makes the whole process a 100 times easier.

Thank you Puan Zue for your time and taking the initiative to read my comment,

After reading this blog, i only realize that UNITEN actually had a English Debate Society. I love to debate also, and i do join a debate Chinese debate group in UNITEN. Debate is always a challenging activities which it actually need our brain to turn and think very fast in order to give out our ideas and respond. It also test for our maturity in giving opinion and suggestion. If i given a chance i hope that iwish i could view the match between Uniten EDSoc and the other univerity debate group to debate, it definitely very interesting.

First of all, congratulations EDsoc. English nowadays is very important, where ever you go and where ever you have been. English you cannot avoid. It is use everywhere now. For me, if someone not good in English, it is better that you do not know anything. But you need to improve it. Not only in studying English is important but in working life also. You cannot miss one day without English. This is true. If you want to know more, after studying in UNITEN, you will go through the working life and you will face this soon. Even though I just entered the UNITEN but I know outside there, there are many challenge is waiting.

Debating. Hmm. An interesting and exciting thingy. Trains personal communicating skills, brain storming skills, responsive skills etc etc. It is a very good thing for one to learn and improve. I hope that someday I can watch a demo of debate between Uniten team and the other universities' team. All the best, EDSoc. ~

With the presence of this society, it helps a lot of friends to discover themselves to become a public speaker. It is a good platform for undergraduates to practice and learn the correct way to speak up. The word, 'practice make perfect', believe it or not? It is all depend on YOU.

I do believe that language is a beautiful thing because it allows one to communicate with one another, to express feelings and to share experience. In my opinion, language plays an important role in debating. No matter how brilliant and supportive ideas and opinions one has in his or her mind, without fluent or proper language, the message is hard to be delivered.
besides, i agree that debating helps one to improve his or her speaking skill. It also trains one's self-confidence and spontaneous responsive skills. Thus, debating is really beneficial.

Hi. Madam zue. I am Hor Su Yen.
Happy birthday! EDsoc! Even though it sounds like I am late in wishing EDsoc, I would like to thank Madam Zue sincerely for guiding me to know the existence of this society indirectly. Before this, I never get to know that there is such society which helps students to speak English in few ways to express their ideas. Without Madam Zue, I think I am still having the notion that there is no society helping to develop talents in students in speaking English.
Through this article, I realized that there are few interesting activities held by EDsoc. Citing an example, there are debating competitions which involve different universities comprising of MMU, UUM, NUS and others reputable universities. Indubitably, it will provide the golden opportunities to the talented students to take part in the competition, lending them a hand to widen their horizon.
Furthermore, the public speaking competition undertaken by EDsoc will also definitely benefit the students by exposing them to the public. In this rat-race society, communicating with people and convincing people to buy your products in English enact a prominent role in achieving success. Pertaining to this, such initiatives undertaken by EDsoc have indoctrinated propriety in conversing with people among the students.
In a nutshell, it is of paramount importance to ensure that EDsoc keep on organizing more interesting activities. Consequently, students will be developed into top notch human capital, keeping themselves on par with other people around the world.

Hi Pn Zue,
I have been in Uniten for one year but i never heard of EDsoc until you told us about it in the class.
In my opinion, EDsoc is a good platform for students to train and groom themselves to be become good english speakers. Indeed, English has become so.important in our lives that we can't live without it. We communicate with foreign people using english, most publications are english and even some malaysian speak english to each other. However, most Malaysian undergraduate students can't really speak English correctly, eloquently and fluently. The way our educational system uses to teach english in secondary and primary school emphasises more on writing using this lingua franca of the world.
Again, EDSoc is really a good way to improve undergraduate students' English level. Hopefully it will grow and flourish in the future to make Uniten a better place.

Hi, Puan Zue.
EDSoc. , indeed, is a good platform for people to speak up their opinion and enhance their confidence. In fact, many undergraduates have all the brilliant ideas and thoughts toward some specific subjects but, most of the times, they are just too shy to express their opinions or perhaps lack of some skills to aid in their delivery of the thoughts. This somehow hampers them from further express their point of views in public. Therefore, it is really grateful of having society like EDSoc. that no doubt provides them the best platform in overcoming their fear of voicing out their own ideas.
It is hard to start and maintain such society in UNITEN and I believe that Puan Zue and your students must have worked sedulously for this society. It is really great for having people like Puan Zue and your team that are always there to help us improve our delivery skills which indirectly build us into a better and completed person. Thank you. Hopefully this society will continue to “grow” in UNITEN and become one of the greatest society in UNITEN.

Just like the other student associations in this Uniten, EDSoc provides a great platform for English debate enthusiasts to share their debating skills and feedbacks. Systematic debate practises and regular social updates between the members of the club strengthen and sharpen the arts of speaking for sure. Having known that the involvement of EDSoc debate team in various national level English Debate Tournaments, I personally agree that those Unitenians who share the similar interests in English speaking should really consider joining the EDSoc big family. Strong potential and gifted talent should not be hid but should be utilized in the way of growing. So, as Uniten folks out there, you must try to get yourself involve with this character building activity as this is so beneficial that you should not miss out!

17 August is the date when EDSoc is first established in Uniten. Here I would like to wish EDSoc “Happy Birthday” in advance. Frankly speaking, I am indeed proud of the club because throughout the years, it has trained countless potential debaters who participated and won in lots of open debate competition. It carves many students who can’t even speak English fluently into confident public speakers and debaters who are able to grab attention and convince their audiences on the stage. Of course, the English Debate Society also helps its members to socialize better by practicing with people from all races. There are many interesting competitions and activities organized by EDSoc in co-operation with other universities such as MMU. Amazingly, all those activities and competitions always have excellent participations.
To sum up, EDSoc is indeed a very good club we can join to sharpen our communicating skills and to polish our credibility as well as confidence. So, let’s all join EDSoc today!!

Hi, Pn Zue.
I was just like other classmates. I think I would never know about the EDSoc if Pn Zue did not tell us in the class.

Actually, there are many students that have their own perspectives on everything but I think that they seldom have the opportunities to voice out their ideas. Many brilliant ideas might be just kept deep inside their hearts. However, I believe that the existence of this society really helps to excavate their potential. EDSoc has provided those students a very good platform to express themselves.
Besides that, I believe that this society has helped to enhance the students’ English language skills. The reason is that this society has participated in many workshops and tourneys and the students will need to communicate with English language, the international language. They need to express themselves with English too. Hence, their fluency in English is increased. They can also learn those soft skills and communication skills through this society too.

I hope that this society can be maintained and lasted forever because it is really a very good platform for students like us to express ourselves.

Hi Pn Zue

I strongly agree that EDSoc is a good platform for students to express their opinions and thoughts freely. EDSoc is like a stage that gathers all the students who would like to voice up their opinions on particular topics. With the presence of this society, students will have the opportunity to learn to overcome their fear of speaking up and further develop their confidence. As we all known that speaking up your own ideas becomes indispensably important in the working world. Employers most likely will recruit employees that have the courage to voice up their opinions. Therefore, in order to be a successful undergraduate, we must take part in this society to gloom ourselves so that we will be able to survive in the reality.

Before this, I have read up about the fear of humans. According to most studies, people’s number one fear is speaking in the public, number two is death. It sounds like people tend to be more afraid of speaking in the public than afraid of dying. So, people who manage overcome the number one fear, fear of speaking in the public, are awesome! EDSoc provides a platform for the students to share their ideas, polish up their skills in conveying their thoughts and overcome the fear. Debating is not only about speaking eloquently, but also about convincing people. That’s the reasons why I always salute those debaters who can speak so calmly, voice out their thought, and convince people with their arguments. Clubs in UNITEN,such as EDSoc, are providing the undergraduate students in UNITEN the opportunities to pick up the skills that are needed at the workplace. Hopefully, we students can make use of the opportunities and spare some times to get involved in clubs, such as EDSoc.

Hi Pn Zue,
First of all, I would like to say Happy birthday Edsoc and congratulations to Pn Zue for establishing such a wonderful society. I totally agree with the comment that communicative competence is essential in today’s employability challenge. This is because there might be thousands of applicants for a particular job, but what differentiates them all is their ability in communicating efficiently without any fear. One who is able to express his/her idea without any fear is regarded as an eloquent and a confident speaker as he is able to generate flow of thoughts without being frighten by the pressure around. I believe societies like EDSoc groom the talents in communicating effectively and nurture magnificent speaking skills. Therefore, more societies like EDSoc should be brought and initiatives should be taken to improve English among pupil as some are even wondering in universities without knowing how to speak English fluently. Again I would like to stress and say that thank you Pn Zue for creating and taking the initiative to start a debate club as it has benefitted many.

Hye Pn Zue, after reading your blog about the debate club, I have learnt many benefits from it. Of course your main target is to make students participate and improve their speaking especially in English right? There are still other benefits I have got actually.
First, they manage to convince to other people. I think this is very good to learn since convincing is subset of charisma and this charisma is one of the soft skills. So, this is very important to every students. They must have this soft skill when they are in working days. For example they need to persuade and convince their clients and even their boss. Politicians for sure really need this ability. But they need a lot of time to train and develop this skill which means that they need to be polished in university days. Hence, I strongly impressed that you have n initiative to establish this debate club and have a lot of tournaments as well.
Then, students are able to improve their talent of speaking. this club as a platform for them to polish their talent. Plus, we as students have this opportunity to express our thoughts and feelings about something. Changing ideas enable us to think widen and not to think one angle only. But what the best and really good thing is students come from different backgrounds, religions, and races meet and stand together as friends. this is called 1 Malaysia as what our prime minister work for.
So, I have learnt a lot of things about it. Anyway, happy birthday for debate club.

Everyone likes birthday. Even though it is someone else’s birthday, people will still like it. And it is the same for this case too. Happy birthday to EDSoc! It is really good to see how a club can grow this big and vast in just a few years. The members must have been working really hard. I like how the club’s activities are going around and I seems attracted to the ‘black is white’ topic. I can’t wait to hear more from you guys. Although I didn’t like language things but I still support you guys.

I feel that UNITEN has great potential especially in the aspect of soft skills. Communication is a major barrier that has to be overcome in order to actually be successful. EDSOC really provides platforms for undergraduates to participate in order to enhance their communication skills. Debates and Public Speaking is becoming a culture in UNITEN and this culture will further strengthen the grasp of communication of the undergraduates.
Personally, the participations of students in this arena has to be improved in order to bring the university up. Undergraduates have to understand that it has to be their own initiative to improve because improvement isn't spoon fed. Nevertheless, the future is bright for UNITEN especially because they have passionate people guiding them.

Assalamualaikum Pn. Zue.

I agree with you that EDSoc helps undergraduates in UNITEN to improve their English. As we all know, UNITEN goes to great lengths to help students to achieve a competent level in English. An excellent example would be Kelompok Murni's annual elocution contest. From my point of view, Kelompok Murni and EDSoc are two sides of the same coin where they serve the same purpose which is improving the student's English.

However, the only problem with EDSoc is it is not well-known. Truth be told, I have never even heard of EDSoc before Pn. Zue mentioned it in class. Thus, let's make an effort and popularize this club and together we can strive to achieve UNITEN's mission which is to generate professionals.

Hi Pn Zue,

First of all, I would like to say Happy Birthday to EDsoc. It is undoubtedly that EDsoc is indeed a great platform and channel for every student in UNITEN to speak up and train their speaking skills. Sincerely, before I came to UNITEN, I am always not comfortable in speaking in English especially in public speaking and presentation, but it is only until I participate in class activities such as discussion and presentation in this one year’s time, I feel like I am now more confident in speaking and sharing idea. In addition, our class has also participated in UNITEN Debate Open last month due to some reason. I was initially unwilling in participate in that debate competition, but after I had gone through the first few rounds, I felt like debate is actually not as bad as I imagined. After the two days tournament, somehow I felt this debate tournament was really beneficial to me. Therefore, I hope that EDsoc will soon be active in UNITEN again so that it can benefit more students in the future.
