Language and Influence - Let's Make a Difference

I'm currently working on my academic article discussing "influence". Definitely, it will not discuss power or authority, but the article will bring forth the hidden powers of language as we use it everyday in our communication with people around us.

Have you heard of influence tactics and influence strategies? Now, how much of this knowledge have you utilized in your life as a student, employee, or participant in any kind of discussion, competitions, challenge, etc?

In bringing the topic of "influence" closer to English as a Second Language (ESL), I have decided to delineate the effects of powerful and powerless language. I shall link this interest to "politeness theory".

To illustrate powerless language which indirectly carries the effects of "influence", we can look at a common habit to use hedges like "I wonder if you could...) and "Could I maybe ask you ..." in our daily conversation and interaction.

Another example is our tendency to use words or phrases which minimize imposition like "I need just a little bit of your time" in making requests or asking for some consideration.

Within the context of "influence", powerless language manifests politeness tactic which represents rituals of approach, social distance, and respect. In layman's term, you may sound humble and down-to-earth, yet you bring more attention to yourself. Hence, you will have more opportunity to influence the hearer of your assertion and reasoning.

Interesting? Guess I should get to completing my paper or it will be overdue anytime. In the meantime, why don't you reflect oon your own experience in a conversation dyad, group discussion, meeting, etc., and share with this blogging community your personal encounter with "influence".

Think - what have you done or said that make others believe in what you said, follow what you do, and shift their stance ? How did you do it? What did you do? What did you say? Or, you may have an idol - a charismatic leader, an orator, an exemplary personality in speech and oratory. Look back and see how these individuals make an impact via their speech and eloquence.

By the way, don't worry about linking it to any of the speech or communication theories...afterall, you're not writing an academic paper. Share, and you'll make a difference:)

Salam...actually i just want to share my experiences...i have attended a few scholarship's interviews after spm and during that time i realized the importance of fluency in speaking english... when i went for my first interview with felda, i tried to speak using a proper english with correct grammars but the interview was sucks..i can't remember a simple word like "goat"...i was so embarrassed .the next day i went to my second and third interviews with mara and ytn but this time i wanted to be myself. i felt satisfied with these interviews. i just speak and i felt very confident. alhamdulillah i got both scholarships. i just want to say that just be yourself, don't even care if people said that you are using "kampung english" or "phua chu kang english"...the most important thing is you are confident to speak english because fluency will come after confidence..

Hi meow10. Firstly, thanx for dropping by and sharing with us your fruitful experience of being yourself. It's true. If we feel comfortable, we carry ourselves better. If English is indeed a problem, we need to ensure command of content as well as spontaneity (presentation). The fact that you secured both the scholarships is a confirmation of the assertion that "we must be ourselves" to exert influence over sitatuions. All z best in your future undertakings:)Pn Zue

Language allows us to turn our thoughts into meaningful words.
Actually we begin to “play with language” (jokes), recognize sarcasm, and understand double meanings.
Clearly, language expresses thought For example, the words “elderly man”
take on a different emotional response when replaced by the phrase “old geezer”.

surely i know that this is out of topic but im just killin time right now. The topic kinda remind me of the many ppl i met so far. What do you think about influence by lying?
Some people are very good at lying and some dont.I admit that im stupid and always got deceived by lotsa ppl but sometimes its not rocket science to figure out that particular person is lying to me.By giving false facts or stories, definately i will lose trust in them.At certain cases, I know he/she is lying, but with my limited knowledge, there is no way i can chopped his/her words. It is very irritating but there is nothing i can do except listen, smile, and nod.Furthermore, the worst kind of liar is the one who like to exaggerate about themselves. They look stupid when exaggerating and make ppl who listen or believe in them look stupid too.Is it so hard to tell the truth?

Hi Pn. Zue,

Speaking about "Language & Influence", in primary school, I've always sucks in English, whether reading, writing, or even speaking, but when I got Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire book from my aunt as my birthday present, I came to like the story and soon become obsessed with english novels until I got into high school. In those period of time, I've gotten better marks in my oral & writing essays tests. What I'm trying to convince here is, once you come to like a thing you'll try your hard and be good at it. Therefore, I'm glad that I got that present from my aunt, it changed my performance and my skeptical thoughts about english language(which I used to think that English is so freaking hard!)
I used to hate English subject but now I'm loving it! I just need to improve my speaking skills as I'm quite not very good at it..

Take care, Pn. Zue ^-^ ~!

aloha,
pn.zue,

using or not using english is still there in everyone where it belongs, but the problem is whether we give importance for it or not? in our country, english as a second language did make some differences in our daily lifes. i myself not using english as my medium of communication with my friends because i didnt see the importance of using english as my medium of communication but when i entered UNITEN i started to use english as my medium of communication because in UNITEN the medium of communication is english.english better known as universal language because with it we can communicate with all the people around the world. language can influence our daily life as we move forward achieving our goals in life, so better we be prepared because we dont know when we will need it.

Tell me who you are, first, and we can work from there. ENNF 103 is definitely a writing class, but I balance it with speaking skills coz classroom is d best way to expose students to the real challenge of using English to function in society - which more often than not, requires communicative competence. So, we'll do chapter 5 next week, and i want you to volunteer:) for the roles...ok???

hi there...=p i realized that is a quite interesting to share some comments on 'LANGUAGE AND INFLUENCE' topic....for me English is a very important language because we use this language as a secondary language...here we should be proficient in English bcos most of the important discoveries and advanced in science, technology and other fields are available in english .so if our command of english is lacking then we will lose out and always be left behind..so whatever it is,just make it some practise bcos practise makes it perfact=p

salam pn zue!!!
wow!!!!
what a nice article....
yes ma'am i agree with u...
at this century,we must think an alternative ways to explore english in our daily life....
it true that,if we we using the old ways,it maybe student wiil think that engkish is hard...
here,im not saying that english is easy, but we must make it simple...
if we notice that, especially malaysian people they like to use an boombastic english rather than a simple english in every simple conversation and automatically they will say that "oh my god english is dam difficult" and this will make them feel not confident of themself....
so ma'am with using using this tactic we can encourage people speak english practice it in their dailyy day..its ok when their speak an "rojak" english try to to change it slowly,an oone day they can catch it up....

Salam. I just want to share my opinion about your topic. Language is a powerful tool of communication. In this borderless world, we cannot live without it. Everyday people need to interact with each other in order to understand better what the others are doing. Anybody who ignores this will be left behind and become less progressive socially. However, effective communication does not come easy. One needs to master the techniques of presenting specific topics effectively and convincingly. The end result would be whether the other party agrees to the ideas presented or not. If so, it means that the presenter has achieved his objective of influencing the audience. If otherwise, he or she will have to work harder to "dig" for more solid proofs or reasons to justify any changes or recommendations that need to be made. If things are rationalised in a structured manner, I believe we can realistically "influence" the intended group of people even
during the first attempt.

I hope at the end of this semester and the future, i should have more confident to speak to the audience and improved my grammatical errors. ;)

Dr.zue, your post never ceased to amaze me. I felt my words are not really deliverable since I'm full of awe with all of your writings.

Hehee...anyway...here I go...

If I compare myself when using Bahasa Melayu or English Language, I realised that I am more calmed down whenever I am using English medium(although my sweaty hands and nervous laughter are unavoidable sometimes.hahahahaha... koffx3*), because Bahasa Melayu have tendency to influence me become much much more emotional when speaking about anything.

I used to read a fact (or was it trivia?), that a man may have different kind of personality when they switch their language of communication. I kind of agree with this, and that is why I prefer to approach people using English language, and usually inclined to feel foreboding if I use my mother tongue language because that language has more passion (raw emotion) in me and might not be filtered when jump out from my mouth.

Nevertheless, it does not mean the way we communicate should seperate our humbleness even how much emotional we are. We should not be sharp with our tongue because even the softest heart can become harden because of that. We should be careful with what we say till we can soften the hardest heart .

The key of communication, for any language, is to be aware of sensitivity, empathy and try to place ourselve in their shoes, "listen not to defense and speak not to offense", apologetic, diplomatic, win-win, persistent but not stubborn, no vulgarity.

If others dont speak the same way like us, don't take it to heart, because mimicing their way is the same like we are downgrading ourselves. Be kind in our words. Or dont speak at all. For silence can never be misquoted.

Whenever anyone giving a feedback about us, take it as a compilment as well because we are matter to them and they want us to improve. It does not mean they want to turn us down by telling our flaws. No. Those flaws may had been our unconcious weakness and they just want to help us. Life is a learning curve anyway. Filterate harsh words, take only facts . And that is how we could refurbish our way of communication because now we can speak to larger society after assimilate with all feedbacks, abling us to influence our audience and making them feel contented with us.

In conclusion, the best way to make them believe in us, is to try lessen the "noise" that may interrupt our conversation, humble in our speaking, show some gratitude, never try to be dishonest, and know your audience so that they feel close to us and we know how to take their heart after we know their background and purpose of coming to us.

When you desire to complete your undergraduate study in UNITEN, how do you tell your parents? Is Communication by common LANGUAGE. This is one of the examples how important of language in influenced the others. I am not a business man, but I have an experience that can share with all of you. Last week, my friends and I were given an assignment to complete, which is designed a brochure. We have chosen Chatime as our brochure’s theme. After the product has come out, we decided to sell our design to Chatime. We have sent a message to Chatime official Facebook page and promote our design using English. Surprisingly, their reply was ”Hi. Thanks for your great work! We will review and consider with the management and let you know by mid Apr.” This experience shows me how powerful a language is in influenced or persuaded the others.

What is all about language? Language actually shows up the origin or identity of a person. It shows how important does language plays in a human beings life. Language is really an important thing because language acts as a medium to communicate between between two person. Language also can make some people to gain profit from it. For example, language plays an important role in business deals. Speaking a specific language is actually a plus point to a person. Not only that, speaking up a specific language can show up the personality of a person. As I mentioned earlier, it is a skill that should be developed by everyone. Speaking a language also can have different type of impression to others. For an example ,some people would be having a good impression on us when we speak in English. We also must be careful with what we are talking. This is because the language that we speak also affect the emotions of some person. In conclusion, we should know what we are speaking. The key of communication, for any language, is to be aware of sensitivity, empathy and try to place ourselves in their shoes, "listen not to defense and speak not to offense", apologetic, diplomatic, win-win, persistent but not stubborn, no vulgarity. There is also a saying by Jim Rohn where, “ If you just communicate, you can get by.But if you communicate skillfully you can work miracles”.This means language can make big works work out well.

Good day Dr.Zue.
Hmmm....English??
English is a language that you learn something new every day. New words and definitely new meanings for each words. It is still fresh on my mind when I was in my Form 1 my English teacher introduce us with Learn a Word a Day where all of us have to write new word every day on the whiteboard. And I own a notebook to write all the words into it. I still have that notebook with me. Whenever I have English lesson in school what strike my mind is SOMETHING NEWI!! I use to be in English Language Society when I was doing my Form 6. It is fun to participate in all the activities such as spelling bee, choral speaking and many more. !! That’s how my journey start to explore English… I feel it is always better to write then speaking up because writing would be more personal where it is between two people, the one who is writing and the one who is reading. Writing is a skill where you write whatever strike your mind with thoughtful ideas, correct grammar and last punch. That’s it your writing skill is just awesome. As we all know speaking would make your skills stronger…and I always wanted to embrace it as I am a shy person. I don’t understand why is it very hard for me speak up. As anyone call me to up to stage, I feel my whole world is collapse. When I am on the field to speak nothing will come up to my mind. Maybe I rather too shy or too fear to share my thoughts as we don’t know people around us will accept it or not. All this shyness and fear comes to an end when I enter English Business class. At first I feel very awkward even to be in that session as all my friends are not there…And first day itself we need to form a group and present. Oh My God…I take a deep breath and praying too hard that my name should not call up. But now everything went upside down. Now I eagerly waiting when my name will mention to share my thoughts with my friends. The quotes “Sharing is Caring” brings in tonnes of meaning but as for me when you care for someone don’t be shy to speak up. There is no harm to share your thoughts. Come on!! “All is well”…My thirst towards English will never end…Last but not least I would take this opportunity to thank Dr.Zue gave me a chance to speak up and bring up my talent.

Influence is such a powerful tools, it directly forever changed people thought and perception. I would like to share my thought on how a person influence may change my life so much. The influence not only affected me, but amusingly also the people across the globe.

When I’m still a child, it’s a dream for me to live as lavish and being adored as I can. Of course only a princess can have such life. I am fascinated with fantasy story from Disney especially on how a princess being loved by her people and live happily ever after. Then that’s my perception on a princess until one day, my mum gave me a comic book, titled as Princess Diana. I’m not familiar with the Princess Diana as she was not featured inside Disney.

Then everything changed, my perception on a princess is not entirely true-nor- false. She still a princess, live in a lavish lifestyle, married to charming Prince Charles, had the glorious wedding of the century, and life happily with two prince. But she have her other charismatic, caring and love to do charity. She is the one who changed the people on the AIDS awareness campaign, visited war-torn country to raise awareness of war effect to the society. She done so much that her deeds united the people and without doubt, she is the princess of the people around the globe.

Princess Diana charisma and compassion changed me as that we live in a wildly worlds, people suffer for the mistake made by others. She showed a small change in term of charity can make the world a better place and united people around the globe, regardless of race, religion or political view. She need no powerful speech but her deeds is more than enough to encourage me to live well, appreciate everything and always do good deeds. It may only a small deed for us but meant everything for people who received.

Thank you.

Most people take the power of language for granted as they see it as something so normal in life, there is nothing to be studied or to emphasis about. However, little did they know that language itself has helped the growth of human civlization - be it good or not.

The most literal example is the law. Law is a set of rules that determines the criminality of a an act and the punishment that goes along and in most cases, since law has to be interpreted, people use it to their advantages due to the loopholes exist in it's language unless it is thoroughly defined.

Eloquence is an important skill if one is vying for the elite (political strategies aside) as the cleverness of their words and speech could motivate or demotivate the crowd listening. Additionally, body language could bring in more flavour when one attempts to exert the truth or lies in their actions. A lot of studies have been done especially in boy languages to determine which is lie and which is truth.

Well of course, the ability to speak is one but the ability to realize the speech is another. Act on what you preach and remember to never go back on your words.

Hi peeps, i would like to share my experience on language as well.Language is a vital tool in communication for human being. It has the ability to build relationship and cultural ties. Every language has its own uniqueness and differences in its community, region or country. English has been wearing the crown of global language in today's world. The language has been playing its part as the international language in many dominions such as education, business, communication and etc. Those who lacks in English knowledge makes anyone unfit in the domain of education in today's world. English also becomes the rescue factor when we travel from nation to nation. Therefore, all the interviews or jobs requires a good English skill to be a part of their organization. As for me, i have been always average in English ever since my primary education. I don't feel that its my fault because my first language is Tamil and i have to learn two other languages (Bahasa Melayu and English) when I cant master my own language. After I completed my foundation, I went for a scholarship interview by a government body. The first question that was aimed to me when walke in the door was " what u got for your english in SPM". Soon after I answered him, he started to point the typical questions that he was supposed to ask me. At first I stammered a bit because his English was really good. After that I wasnt stammering anymore because I was confident that Im not being rude to him, Im just answering him politely even when Im not that good in English. I used simple words throughout the conversation and thanks to GOD I managed to get the scholarship. After that experience, i learned that the key to communicate is by making others understand what we mean and making them to feel comfortable communicating with us.

Just to share my experience^^

its been two years since i left my secondary school. In secondary school, we tend to use our mother tongue to communicate because we feel comfortable about it. When we speak with other races, we use Bahasa Malaysia as another language to communicate and express our thoughts but then, we forget our English language. When i was being interviewed, i make simple mistake and sometime i will make someone misunderstood about what i am talking about. Learning English is somehow make our life easier as English is a national language that also speak by another nation.
So,learn to speak english and together let's make difference.

Hello Dr.Zue,

Well, I think, no matter what language you're talking, your main point is to deliver. How to deliver? It depends on what situation you’re in, sharing thoughts, ideas, selling product, engaging in argument or debate. Basically, different situation, different strategy.

Conversation is a two-way activity. For me, I think the balance between listening and speaking is really important, you can't do one without another. By listening your relationships with people will be more harmonious, help you understand them and their needs, their points of view and their arguments. To be a good listener, you need to be patient and tolerant, open-minded and non-judgmental and respectful. This helps you to win people’s ears, make them open to listen to you and ready to what you want to say. After that, is your turn to deliver your thoughts, ideas, arguments. You need to know what you want to say, speak with confidence, keep eye contact, don’t be offensive and don’t be gloomy.

There are a lot of strategies depending on the situation you are in. That depends on who you speak with and who is the listener, and various factors that can affect the conversation. At the end of the day, you need to have balance between listening and speaking.

so, LISTEN! WIN OTHERS EARS! STRIKE!

Thank you.

Persuasion and influence. The two strong tools for the Devil when make deals with humans.

Same concept applies to us in the professional world. When you are in charge of a project worth RM20k, you need sponsors. You will have to persuade, influence, market your project to stakeholders.

Interviews? I believe everyone understand how important it is to be influential and fluid, versatile with a good command of competitive English language. You have to stand out, cutting edge as mentioned by Dr. Zue.

Oh, you mentioned about the importance of influence bla bla bla... HOW?

One, brush up grammar. I believe, speaking the language is the fastest way to learn the proper grammar. Make use of English language, communicate with it. People says that, write as if you are speaking it. It's true. Talk to your friends in English, it is the most wide used language. Hey, talk to international students! Help tourists to navigate their way in Kuala Lumpur. Every little thing counts.

Hey, I think I'm getting the hang of it. Typing out what is on my mind. heee... :)

What is language? Why must we practice good English? How does language influences? Well language is defined as a set of sounds, combination of sounds, and symbols that are used for communication. Languages do not merely differ in the technical sense across linguistic boundaries, but present various concepts vital to the existence of a culture. The very first language is known as Sanskrit. Most linguists agree that there are about 5000-6000 languages. The way language can influence is where it can show our personality, benefits our life and enable us to be versatile.
First and foremost, language can reflect someone’s personality. Everything a person says or does reveals something about his personality. People's thoughts, beliefs and actions are perfectly aligned with each other in such a way that they all reveal the same things about the person. If someone speaks softly, it means she’s a soft typed person and if someone speaks fluently and bravely, it shows that that person is a brave person and knows what he is speaking about. The way we speak shows and determines our emotions. A person that knows and speaks multi language is known to be a very intelligent person as they could master so many different words and their meaning.
Besides that, languages influences a person’s benefit or fate. A person that knows and could speak the right language could get a right job. For example, if a non-Chinese could speak and knows Chinese language, he can work in a Chinese company as we know in Malaysia, Chinese are the one that does various business and succeed well in that field. Even engineering students are offered to learn Chinese language in some Universities as it is to increase the probability or chance for the graduates to earn a job in Malaysia. By having a good English language ability, a person can play well in his or her interview. There will be efficient two way communication. This could help someone to get a better job and better salary which can actually determine someone’s fate.
Lastly, by knowing many language, someone could be versatile. This is where when someone knows many language, they could not be cheated, scolded and offended by other person. As for example, a Chinese man that scolds or criticize an Indian man that know Chinese language could end up in getting himself to regret of his misbehavior.A person could get himself comfortable in foreign country if he knows the language or mother tongue of that certain country. That could ease him to survive in that spefic country.

Hi everyone I would like to share my experience here.. There's no any chance for me to learn English before I come in uniten , my parent didn’t learn English before , so they can’t teach me English , my primary school was a typical Chinese school and my classmates are all Chinese when I was in secondary school , all of us speak Chinese , when I was young I don’t know how important Is language (English) , I learn English only to graduate in secondary and primary school, until I come in uniten , i have some friends from other country and other race , that’s my opportunity to learn English right now, because I must speak English if I want to communicate with them. This is my 4th semester in uniten, Uniten keep putting students in front to speak up, that’s really good, it helps a lot, now my shyness reduced and confident gained, at least I can speak a little bit now. I notice that environment and friends really influence us a lot in language. When I was in MUET speaking test, presentation in uniten, I only notice that my English is so bad, I have the words inside my brain but I can’t bring it out. So there is few years to go in uniten, I will now try my best to practice my English into a better level. Thanks UNITEN..

In my opinion, speaking in English will make us look more professional. With English, it can bring us to everywhere. What I mean here is, with English, you can go anywhere around the world. Especially in business communication, almost everything will use English language. We can amaze our client as well with our fluent speaking skills. For me, to approach people for something is more effective when we speak in English. Speaking in English can gain your confidence as well. No need to worry about our grammar error, just try to speak in English. We can learn new things every day when we try to speak. Learned from mistake. English actually can influence people. I would like to share my experience, before this when I was in secondary school; I am not really good in English. But I really adore my sister because she really good in English. The way she speak, her English accent was really amazed me. I always asked her for tips how to improve my English. And then, day by day, her tips really work for me. Not just my sister, my English teacher helps me as well until now. I’m not trying to say that “now I’m really good in English” after what I learned before, I’m just wanted to say that, if you really have a passion to learn English or speak in English, just do it. Language is a complex process that along with it brings tremendous power. This power is so strong that it can be demonstrated that language can actually influence the way we think. Language can be an incredible tool for change, both positive and negative. It can be seen as being used to conquer entire nations and inspire untold billions. The power of language to influence thought makes vocabulary building a critical part of education. Some people just know how to influence others without even knowing how to do the job.

deathshadow47 said...

Language and influence can be said to come hand in hand. If you think back, this makes sense since language is used for communication and the reason for communicating in the first place is to influence the other party. Be it to entrust you with a project or even to make sure your son is doing his household chores properly.

On the topic of language, it is not confined to verbal language only. Sometimes, the body language (postures and gestures) convey what you really mean, even when you say otherwise. Case in point, a person is most probably not amused when they say “That’s funny!” but flipping his middle finger at the same time. Furthermore, while direct communication is good (especially for those who just seem to can’t take a hint), indirect communication sometimes are more favourable. Indirect language include body language and of course, the use of sarcasm, innuendoes and double entendre. These kind of signals are used to convey messages covertly to your allies. A wink to your pal might mean one thing but to other people in the room, that wink might mean something else entirely.

On the topic of influence, there are in my opinion two types of influence. Namely, good and bad influence. Good influence are those that beneficial for all parties involved or those that bring people to the path of God. Examples of these are speeches that motivates employees, and preaches and sermons. Bad influence is basically the opposite of good influence. Exemplary cases of bad influence are like fraud, blackmails, lies and deception, and most profound in social media, false accusations.

However, in the end, language and influence are both inherently neutral. They are just tools and like any other tool like a hammer, it is up to the user to use it responsibly. A hammer when used to nail in repair works is used correctly, as opposed to when it was used as a murder weapon.

On that note, I would like to remind others that words have power, as the saying goes “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Therefore, please exercise caution and be responsible when you use language to influence others. It is not just your life that will be affected.

Thank you.

Language and influence.

Basically, both of these elements are related to communication skill. Communication skill is one of the important skills that every one of us should master. We use languages to communicate and express our opinion.
In order to effectively deliver a message, we need to use appropriate language as well as fluency. Correct choice of words that suits with a situation is the fundamental rule in language. This is because, different words set different mood, just like what Dr Zue has mentioned in her writing.

Next, I would like to share my experience on how language and influence are related. During my secondary school year, four of my friends and I were nominated as head girl of the school. In order to be chosen as the next head girl, we needed to present our manifestoes to teachers and students. As the basic concept of a manifesto is to influence other to put their trust on us as their leader, I presented mine confidently. Confidence is the key to fluency which is the master key of influence. I used some words that displayed me as a charismatic leader so that they will put their trust on me. At the end of the day, as the result of using tactic of language as a medium to persuade, I was voted for the position of head girl for 2011.
In the nut shell, I am strongly agreed that language is one of the medium to win over a situation or people. Language has its own power that can change the entire world perception.

Thank you.

Language can either be an influence or a barrier. I believe the way we deliver our language affects the way we communicate with our listeners, and hence this decides whether the language we speak will turn into an influence or a barrier.

Language, in this case English, can be something that influence people if it is being delivered properly such as using correct grammars, rich vocabulary to explain what we're trying to convey, good pronunciation, etc.

However, language can turn into a barrier between people if the speaker fails to convey what he/she is trying to say to the listener. The listener might misunderstand some words and take it for a different meaning if the one who delivers the language is unable to express him/herself properly.

Thus, I believe this is why all of us need to improve ourselves to become better speakers so as to make sure that the language we speak can actually become an influence to other people, and not a barrier.

Hi Dr Zue, well language is an important aspect in communication, without language one is unable to communicate with others and share our thoughts. This is one of the main reasons why I think mastering the English language is very important in today’s society. Nowadays we often communicate with others using English as an intermediary language, so we have to be proficient in English in order to clearly convey our thoughts and avoid causing misunderstanding. People who are bad in English might have a hard time surviving in society because they’re unable to communicate with others.
Language plays a very important role in our lives as it is the basis for communication, your use of language will determine the number of people that will actually pay attention to you when you speak. Have you ever been to a seminar or a talk that is just so boring that you wish it would end as soon as possible? That is because the speaker is not creative and incompetent in his usage of the English language. An eloquent speaker is someone that can paint pictures with his words and completely immerse you in his imaginary world.
To do all that, you must first master the English language. This is easily achievable by influence as mentioned by Dr Zue. The most effective way to improve our fluency of the language is by using it as much as possible in our daily lives. This can be done if we surround ourselves with the right company. By being around people who are competent in the use of the English language, we will be influence by them, and in the long run our mastery of the language will improve tremendously.
For this reason, I’m truly thankful to Dr Zue for always encouraging and giving us the chance to speak up and voice out our opinion.

The idea that the language you speak affects the way that you think sounds sort of obvious, one of those things you just assume. Humans communicate with one another using a dazzling array of languages, each differing from the next in innumerable ways. For a long time, the idea that language might shape thought was considered at best untestable and more often simply wrong. Language is a uniquely human gift, central to our experience of being human. Appreciating its role in constructing our mental lives brings us one step closer to understanding the very nature of humanity. some people talk differently doesn't necessarily mean they think differently. In the past decade, cognitive scientists have begun to measure not just how people talk, but also how they think, asking whether our understanding of even such fundamental domains of experience as space, time and causality could be constructed by language. Therefore, It is important for us to learn English properly if we want to influence other people.

Hello Dr.Zue
English has become one of the most important spoken languages in the world. It is a prerequisite for studying abroad. In particular, the majority of the textbooks in all the different disciplines are in English.
First of all, we should know the difference between textbooks language and real English Language. For textbooks, student should study and read business textbooks line by line to get familiar with business terms, namely, economic, financial, accounting and management terms, such as fiscal and monetary policies, derivatives, materiality, accounting theory, pensions, capital leases, etc…. therefore, this process allow student write in business language. In addition, you should focus on grammar in order to write statements free from mistakes.
On the other side, real English Language is the daily language used by native speakers in the street, supermarkets, companies, public places, in buses, etc…. For example, In Arabic Language, there are two versions: standard Arabic Language which used in literature, poems, while colloquial Arabic Language which is used in our daily life.
So how to get fluent English Language speaker?
Here are some tips learning English language:
Firstly, try to not memorize individual words, but study and memorize phrases and statements which are much easier to remember.
Secondly, make it fun to read to do that u have to read articles, conversations, stories and try to write new statements and imagine stories that simulate the stories you red before.
Thirdly, watch videos, films, conversations and repeatedly listen to them (listen for more than 20 times)
Fourthly, try to repeat what the native speaker said during the conversation.
Finally, focus on pronunciation, be patient to listen conversations several times, try to repeat what do you hear, and sometimes try to write the difficult idioms that native speakers used.
On the other hand, schools and universities should support and motivates students to engage in learning English language programs outside the university or school. However, students who face significant troubles in English Language, they be unsuccessful to get the required score, and then they are dismissed.
To conclude, Listening and speaking are the keys to get proficient in English language.
Practice Makes Perfect
Don’t be frustrated; Always try because Hard Working Is The Key To Success.

Evening y'all!

The way that I had influenced others would be through confidence and conviction in presenting my ideas, as well as, putting up arguments based on personal opinion and research that I've read. To put as example, let's take Adolf Hitler. Though branded as a villain, he is one of my favourite leader and speaker. He had the charisma and the way that he presented his case, the way he gave his speeches, his intonations and much else is superb. He could influence millions into following his cause. While his atrocious ideology depicts him as the devil incarnate, in war time, villainy and heroism is very subjective.
Nevertheless, it is undisputed that he has mastered the use of language to influence other people.

With that said, there also other great speakers out there. This goes to show that language can be used to influence people in two ways: the good and the bad. Which one is which, is dependent on the speaker and on how the listener perceives them.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Ikmal Hakim Latip

It was really memorable because during the time, I being a good friend to dictionary and thesaurus. I really enjoy doing that. But, I’m not saying that I was good enough. It just about sharing my energetic time toward English language. Then, I realize that if I want to travel I have to improve my English better and better. Salam, Its really hard to speak in english if you don't know what does it means. Plus as a Malaysian, we had learn english since kindergarten, but still i found that it was hard because sometimes English have a some word with the same spelling but different way to pronounce it and have same pronunciation but different meaning. At school we only learn about grammar and vocabulary but we never practiced how to speak english properly and we only learn english subjeck but not really learn the proper english and that why many of them has "broken english" and manglish(Malaysia English). That make student afraid to speak in english because people might be not understand what we try to says and mispronounce it. Now i have studying in university, and I need to use a lot of English. I tend to practices to talked in english more with my family in english, watching more english movie that have a subtitle with it, and i tried to mimic them and that how I do to improve my english language. Sometime its kind like funny funny thing if you gone wrong when speaking but if I don't start learn it now then when will I start ? Just need a little confidence in ourself and kaboom you will achieve your own goal and dream ;)

Hi Puan Zue. In my humble opinion, language reflects directly to our self. Hence, it is important to speak with a proper language in front of other people. Besides that, the way we speak determines the maturity and the knowledge that we have.

Obviously, people with much more knowledge can give the facts and people with less knowledge will give us the rubbish talk.

In my perspective, influence will come when indirectly when we have the knowledge. As in Islam, it urges its believers to gain as much knowledge as they can because with knowledge, a better world can be created. To influence people, knowledge can be a crucial part where people nowadays are brilliant enough to differentiate between the truth or not.

Lastly, language and influence are closely connected to each other provided that knowledge has to comes first before those two. I believe that when I have the knowledge, I can speak with a proper language and thus, I can influence the people around me afterwards.

Thank you.

English is really important actually. For me, I have been learning English since I was little. My mum sent me for English class in Smart Reader until I'm in standard 4, I think. From there, I actually learn to talk to others. Talking in an appropriate English can make it easy to actually influence and attract people to listen. Even though I never gone through any scholar interview, I know its crucial to actually speak fluently in English because from the way you speak can actually define our personality. Not only that, speaking fluent English can also help us convince people about our idea and all. I think we should speak more of formal English rather than speaking the 'rojak' English or Manglish.Just remember, by speaking fluent English. By that we can actually practice and become better and by the end of the day, we can actually influence many people.

Language itself bears a huge influence on the overall society. At times language tends to beef up the self esteem of an individual thus creating the influence one needs over a situations. It has implied on me many times. I could say on a daily basis. Just the other day, at my university food court there seem to be a little misunderstanding between our local stall worker and a foreign student. Much to the amusement of the student, the worker did not seem to fully understand what he was speaking and hence took his order. The student however did not like the end product of the food and I had to go in as a mediator between two of them to resolve the issue. The student did not wanted vegetable in his fried rice and the stall worker had ordered otherwise. Just talked and calmed down the situation, the student accepted his food and went on. A simple act of influence by just knowing the right things to say.

Hi good morning Dr. Zue.

I really agreed with Nurul Mursalina.
"speaking in English will make us look more professional" because English has roles as both an international and a global language. As an international language, English has played role as the tool of communication among people from different countries, in other words, English is used to bridge linguistic odd among people in international communities.

First of all, i want to say that learning in English at the first step is really pretty hard but if we use to try and have a passion to learn new words, new phrase, idioms or anything surely we can speaks very well.

I've never expected that I will learnt so much in your class, Dr. Zue. So many words, so many tips that I got from you. In another words, very much thankful to you. I have made great progress in English now :)

What kind of language you use it doesn't matter as long as you use the correct language.
So be careful language can effect someone expecting, their thought and they also can judge us.
If you ask me, language is powerful or not?yes...it is.
Just a few word can influence the hear. Even you good at education, when it come to interview,
do you think you can get a job easily?Of course not. So what are you waiting for start using language with good
fluently then you have no problem. Here i want to said and maybe i should advice that english is important since
it was medium language.Don't get mad with the language, soon you will see opportunity come straight to you.

Language used reflects who you are. everyone have their own way to communicate with others. With

a very good language can cause people around us influenced with the word what we just say and

getting trusted. The effect is fundamental to achieve something, for example, if you want to be

a leader of something, we need to have people, many people who trusted and influenced in us.

Without our influence there will be slightly chance to be crowned as a chairman or a good

leader.

Influence will make a different.

Recently I have been watching TED talks. I really enjoy watching different speakers with different background talking about specific idea based on what they have been through or experienced. I find it very fascinating how all these people have the courage and confidence to stand out the crown and share their ideas to so many people. Watching them made me thinking a lot about how do I influence people when I talk to them? How do I make them feel about the specific topic I am I talking about? Ever since these thoughts crossed my mind I decided to watch these people with another perspective and besides listening to their speech notice their body language and their posture as well. I realized that their whole movement when they are standing up the stage is the main key to make me to listen to them intentionally. however I watched few talks that the speaker didn’t even get my attention in the beginning and I didn’t find it interesting at all so I immediately stopped the video and played on another one .
After watching so many talks I decided to record myself talking about any topic just to see what others see when I talk to them. I found it quite odd me talking to myself, but after a while it became a routine. After I watched the first video of myself I realized that my voice tone is incredibly low which made sense why most of the time I have problem with getting people’s attention. The second thing I noticed was my eye movements; I realized that I look around a lot instead of looking right in front. And I also observed that I move my hands a lot which did not look nice. At the end I was really happy with myself and I felt more confident with my flaws.
Now I feel more confident whenever I am talking to someone or giving a speech to a group of people. I try to remember not to make the old mistakes to make sure that the listeners are there with me and enjoying their time listening to me.

Hi assalamualaikum.
Language and influence is one of the topic that I found hard to explain. For me, use simple words and good intonations. As a student, they might be bored if they have to hear an awkward or boring speech. And maybe, some of the students may not understand if we are using high level of words. Try to use an attention getter, because by this way, student might be interested to hear what we are going to say. And if our speech is entertaining, that was a bonus for us because people will be more interested. Charismatic people are not the one who can influence people by their speech, but those who can entertain people by their speech. Like myself, I prefer to hear an entertaining speech, rather than too technical and complex speech. That is my opinion. Thank you.

Assalammualaikum Dr Zue .

Even today, English is still considered to be the language of global business. Whilst many people can speak a little English, not everyone is able to read or write in English. Being able to do all three can improve an individual’s employment prospects and give them an advantage over those who can only speak one language.

It can also give individuals a unique competitive edge when it comes to applying for new job roles. If a candidate has exactly the same qualifications and experience as another candidate, but they also happened to speak English, it is very likely that the employer would choose to hire the candidate that could speak English. This is due to the fact that it adds value to the person as a candidate and means that the business would be able to use them to conduct international business meetings and deal with English-speaking customer queries.

During my primary school , I found that it is hard to learn English as I dont really like it . But , fortunately I found one of my favourite teacher that had made me fall in love with this languange and felt that I really need to atleast being able to understand in reading and writting in English. Everyone who had the willing to learn in English had the opportunity to master this languange . The most important thing is that we need to love and enjoy it . Only then , it could influence our mind to keep on practicing it .

Assalamualaikum Dr Zue,

Language is something that is very important in our daily life. I usually speak and obviously speak in Bahasa everyday. I rarely speak in English. I'll speak in English if I need to talk with foreigners or lecturers.

Some of us find that it's arrogant to speak in English if you're a Malay. But I think that it's something that should not happen, since if we live in Malaysia, we still need to learn English. Furthermore, it's our second language.

The way we speak show who we are. It influences other people. But from my experience, I think that I never influence others especially during speeches. But if someone ask for an opinion about a small problem, now that I know on how to influence them by giving them advices.

To be honest, I never admire anyone. But I remember someone, Nick Vujicic. I watched his video past few years ago, I bet you know him too. He's very famous. He was born with no arms and no legs. But he manages to survive everything by his strength, and now he is a motivational speaker that once made me cried when I watched his video. The way he speaks, I know that he is very full with good positive vibes. He made me realize on how grateful I am and I should be blessed enough with my life and never take it for granted. Love all the people around us, spend time with them, never think that we are useless, be happy, think different, and be different.

Salam Dr. Zue. Thank you for sharing this post, this post is really useful. Well, as we know language is a tool of communication. It is a medium for us to share thoughts, ideas, to deliver anything especially to human being. Nevertheless, i am pretty sure we should be a little bit sensitive when we communicate. I found that teenagers nowadays feel more confident to speak in english. It is great! It helps them a lot as English is the second language in our country. Unfortunately, i found that most of them use harsh words and bad words among themselves which is not giving any benefit to them for future or for this country. We should start change this culture and try to speak in polite and humble way. I would like to share an experience here. A few days ago, i was talking on the phone with my friend and there was my little sister doing her homework in front of me. I was so excited back then until i didnt realized i accidentally threw out some bad words. At that night, me, my mother and my sister were having some conversation and guess what, my sister used that bad words all of sudden. I knew she learned that from me. So, it is pretty obvious that language that we used could influence our life. We should stop using bad words and start make a difference. Thank you.

English is a global lingua franca of the world today! Don't y'all agree to that too? So, it is essential for one to master that language. I tried too. I tried with a little bit of passion in learning it. I can only think of a bad, a little of ashamed situation I was in when when I was using English. It was when I was chatting with a friend of mine, and a line of reply from my friend goes like " Wasted* " .. we was discussing something serious, but she is still paying attention on my English and corrected me! There's another experience of mine, with the same person, but now I was on call with her. While the conversation goes on, she just paused for a while and all I can hear her say is "blah blah blah" . Guess my English wasn't influencing enough when it's with her. To sum up, trying to speak a language in way that it is persuasive or influencing enough, I do think that learning to use powerless yet effective words/language would be a stepping stone for it. Practice makes perfect folks!

In my opimion, fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read. Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Their reading sounds natural, as if they are speaking. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word. Their oral reading is choppy.

hi dr.

its quite hard for me to do perfect things. i preper to go with simple and easy understandable english. but sometimes i do think do my audience really enjoy my speech. for audience they prefer an easy understandble language rather then hard and high level of words used during certain speech that takes times for them to think and understand the topic.

But its better to use higher level of language in an important and formal speech so that the audince will impressed with our language and they might think that we are really good and fluent in english.

Language and Influence
what i can conclude from this topic is our talking or communication language related to our surrounding influence.
I would like to share some of my experience , I'm born as a Malay races, so i often speak in Bahasa rather than other Language n also schooling in Harian school. So basically i speak english while in english class only. So when i jump into Uniten, I notice that many foreigner student studies here, n of coz the way to communicate with them is in english language. So when i hve some foreigner friend, what ever it is I have to speak in english to communicate with them. Actually they are one of my big influence to speak in english. Its a good thing actually, but the most important is, you must to think wisely before you speak bcoz maybe some of the word you use may hurt someone else feelings.

hi dr.zue and everyone :)

In my opinion, language, is referring to the words that we choose to use in your speech or in the other meaning, our focus is on spoken language. Language is very important because it is the way on how humans have the ability to communicate and also interact with each other. For example, when we meet suddenly with the international students, and they ask something in English language, if we are fluent and power in English language, it would be easier to communicate with them for sure.

In today’s world, the powerful use of language can help us in our daily affair such as we use English language to do the assignments or having the interview which mostly we need to speak in English. Besides, if we use the language effectively, it will also improve our ability to be a great speaker. Language also important in every aspect in our lives because it allow us to communicate and we enable to share ideas with other people. I have always interested in languages and our language is most important part of our being. And I think that it is impressive if we can learn other languages because it helps us to learn about other people cultures.

Mastering a language surely gives us plenty of benefits. It’s a medium to communicate with others to share our thoughts and sometimes to get what we want. Speaking of getting what we want, adding an element called influence can be significant. It’s about being diplomatic and persuasive simultaneously. It involves some sort of manipulating words that can implement our ideas but at the same time doesn't make us look like a control freak. As an example, “I want to ask you…” and “Would it be okay if I ask this...” has the same meaning. However, the second phrase seems more polite and I’m sure people tend to prefer to hear it compared to the second one. Thus, choose your words wisely as how you say it can sometimes be more important than what you’re saying.

"language and Influence"

the true things about myself is,i really dont like reading, writing and even speaking. But now someone (dr zue) changed my perception about how important english nowadays. i try hard to speak in front of people.
Lastly, language and influence are closely connected to each other provided that knowledge has to comes first before those two. I believe that when I have the knowledge, I can speak with a proper language and thus, I can influence the people around me afterwards.

Hi everyone,
I do think that language is very powerful and influencing. Just like what Pn. Zue said in the article, powerless language manifests politeness tactic which represents rituals of approach, social distance, and respect. I agree with Pn. Zue. With good application of words, we can express ourselves better and make ourselves more polite eventhough the thought that we want to share may be harsh. My secondary school teacher once told me, "We think in words. The more words you know, the more thoughts you can have.". I do think that language is just like a pakaging process for our thought, just like those products we bought in market, no matter how is the appearance of your product, after pakaging, it will be nice, attractive and more easier for people to accept. Same goes to language, with a little bit of decoration by using words wisely, it will make our thoughts sound nicer. Language is the source of misunderstandings. For me, words are a form of action, it is capable of influencing changes. There is one saying goes like this, "The great thing about human language is that it prevents us from sticking the matter at hands." . Knowing how to use proper language and apply words wisely in our daily lives, many arguements may be avoided and things will be changed. So, i do really think that language is powerful and influencing. Thank you.

Language plays a great role in the process of transmitting language. Everyone learns a language at any one stage of their life. This shows that communication will be used throughout in order to give and receive knowledge.

Have you ever wondered who taught you to talk the way you do? People learn to talk and express themselves everyday of their lives. Starting from the day you were born you used language or some form of it to communicate with those around you. As a baby you usually show your displeasure with your new surroundings by crying, and if you don’t the doctor will make sure you do. Everyday we express our point of view to others in some form of language. Whether it is through verbal communication, written discourse or through body language, you can tell if a person is upset, angry, or happy.

We as human beings don’t realize how much language has to do with our lives. How can you determine if one of your friends is angry with you? Is there a different tone to their voice? Do they have a stern look on their face? Of course they do, your friend feels the need to express their anger to you by these different forms of language. Where do we learn to use these different forms of language? How are our uses of these languages shaped? The three main contributing factors to how we express ourselves through language come from our schooling, our friends, and most of all from our families.

besides from using our own mother tongue language, english is a must know language. it is used mostly in this world. without it. our communication is only limited to the place we were living in.embrace and learn english as it will prove to be an important language we need to master nowadays.
thanks.

When it comes to language, most of us underestimate its power. Language is undeniably the most powerful tool in human communication. It’s a very powerful tool when it is used efficiently and when it comes to influencing others, language in undeniably the most powerful tool. When language is used well, it can induce very deep feeling in others, motivate others to action and can incept ideas to others.

We have definitely seen the type of languages that is used in the politics to persuade. Our local politicians often use our local language because it is the most understood language. However if you took notice, they rarely use bombastic terms, rather they often use simple language with an empowering tone and modulation to make the listener to feel confident in their ideas and gain support from the crowd. With just using the right tone and modulation, we can totally change the impact of our word. For example, try saying “I’m going home” in a slower modulation and soft tone, it would carry the massage that we are not feeling keen to go home. However, try saving the same sentence with fast modulation and a higher tone, it would implicate that we are looking forward to go home. See, with just changing our modulation and tone, those words can carry a totally different massage.

Language is a really powerful ally to have when marketing a product. Take Steve Jobs for example, when he introduces a new product he can really make the audience and viewers to feel excited for the product and ultimately influence us to purchase the product. That’s how powerful a presentation can be with the right use of language and presentation skills. There also instances where there are a few leaders have used their influencing skill for evil purpose such as Adolf Hitler during the Second World War and there many leaders have used their convincing skill for good purpose. That’s how powerful a language can be.

We use language to inform the people around us of what we feel, what we desire, and question/understand the world around us. We communicate effectively with our words, gestures, and tone of voice in a multitude of situation. Would you talk to a small child with the same words you would in a business meeting. Being able to communicate with each other, form bonds, teamwork, and it’s what separates humans from other animal species. Communication drives our lives and better ourselves.
Origins of why their are so many different languages as plagued scholars and linguistics for centuries and will continue to puzzle them far beyond our lifetimes to come. In most cultures have myths that there was a common language spoke among the people with a deity getting angry and confusing the people or separating them from each other/segmenting the people to create their own language.
The importance of communication can be often overlooked. Even with the ability to communicate with each other. Misunderstandings happen. Remember, communication is a two way street that should be embraced and not ignored. Believe it or not, some people can be arrogant to believe they can’t go to foreign countries without knowing anything of the language or culture of the people in the places they visit. The importance of language is beneficial regardless if you do it for fun or for your career or even just for personal travel.
I have always been interested in languages. Our language is the most important part of our being. I think it is important to learn other languages besides our own because it helps us to learn about other peoples and cultures but the most important one that we can learn is our own mother tongue as this is one of the most basic parts of our identity. If we lose our own tongue, for example, when we grow up in a country which is not our own, in my opinion, we are losing a part of ourselves.

Hye Dr.Zue,
How has my life changed since I started to learn English?
I have obviously become more self-confident. It seems like something indescribable. At first, I felt that English was a very important means for a good university and then a lucrative job. It was and will always be, I hope. That's why it has made me feel more self-confident in studying and living. Actually, I have developed new habits. I no longer spent much time watching TV and wasted my time sleeping. Since then, I have tried to read, write, speak and listen to English at any moment I can catch. As for new friends, I have met very interesting people through communicating with them in English. I have learned a lot about the world because of English. I believe many other people perhaps have the same experience about it. Without English, I would not have been able to imagine what another language fit a huge requirement like English. Hmm...so far I have not been to any country; however, I believe in the future I will travel a lot. This reminds me of English use and how much English is going to help me get successful in my travelling.

Isn’t this funny? The more you know about English, the more aware you become of your native language. Why? That's because most of often I compare the differences between English and my native language. Any learner of English as a second language does that. It's natural to think about one's own language at the same time when we are using English. I would have spent my time watching TV more and more  if I hadn't started to learn English.

Assalamualaikum,
Nowdays english is important to everyone because the whole world communicate using english. But I understand not all people can speak english fluence. So do I. And I understand lot of people shame to speak in a meeting, class or in front of people because of their english is poor. For me,its okay if you’re weak to speak in english. Dont be shame and stop think negative about what people are saying about you. I had an experience to share to those who read my comment. After my SPM, I went to interview to find a part time job at a hotel. Its near by my house. I feel so nervous and shy to speak. But after that, I try to speak in my own words even my english is poor. The result, the manager accept my request because he respect of my confident level even my english is poor. We need to confident when speaking. Then the fluency will come through. Its okay if you’re speak in broken english. As long as people understand you, it will be okay. Try to speak more and you will get your fluency in english. Goodluck.

Good days everyone, as we know that English is an international language and the way we to communicate with others from worldwide or other country. Studies show that our language affects how we experience the world, playing a role in everything from how we save for retirement to the colours we see. So we have to make our self-change to make it perfection. Language is a main thing and also the first we have to start, not only that, we should speak a language fluently and skilfully to get to people's hearts. The conclusion is the more language u speak the more better you will be to communicate with other.

Assalamualaikum to Dr. Zue and my fellow reader.
Languange and influence , hurm.. seem hard to explain for me. But i will try my best to share in this topic. As we can see, many people can speak english, but mostly not everyone is able to write , read , and speak in english. If you able to do all the three of above, in my opinion you will be in advantage chance because you learn another language besides you mother tounge language. For beginer like us, you can't rush to be expert to achive all of the above without proper training and preparation. Using a simple word is a starting to make a difference. Some intonations is good also when you want to start speaking something. In speaking , if you want to talk about something , make sure it is benefit and have a lot of good point. If you "goreng" while speaking , your audience or friends maybe bored when they hear your speech. Using an antetntion gatter is also one of the step to improve it. Try to learn some high level word so that others who hear will impress. Thats all my opinion that I can share. Remember , start from low level does not mean you can't move up to higher level. Thank you.

As we know, human using language to speak and interact with other people. In term of history, we know that during the beginning of human civilization, human have used language to communicate with people and it is not the language that they need to speak up. They used to draw something that basically shows a message to someone. That is how they communicate with each other. Thus, I believe that language is the most powerful tool in human communication and it influence human daily life. So, let’s make a difference and learn a variety of language especially English so that you can conquer the world and influence people to make their live better.
