In Pursuit of Scholarly Writing for ENNF 103

Hi 2 all,

Great to know that you're checking the blogosphere for updates. Yupp:) The reading-response essay is around the corner, and I'm sure each and every one of you inspiring and budding writers is busy reading, debating and writing, something, somewhere, somehow.

The miracle about reading is the indispensable wisdom and values we collate over the years. Better still, some of us can memorize some wonderful lines and phrases, some shocking statistics, picking up some expressions enhancing the effectiveness of of our writing initiative...Hmmm...

Points to ponder:

1. If you want to make your paragraph interesting and attractive to the readers, a masterpiece they can relate to almost immediately - try inserting one famous quotation or two. Hopefully it's not a cliche. Try quoting big contemporary names, renowned events, or so.

2. If you want to elevate your writing and make it more scholarly, you'll need some extent of research. Here, you will have to use in-text citations in your paragraph to mention the ideas taken from your literature review or reading articles. In other words, you have to convince your readers that you are not only immersed and engrossed in your own world with your high-flying ideas, but you also read other researchers' works and acknowledge their kind contribution to the said field.

p.s. check the pages on in-text citation in Chapter 3 to know what I mean.

To start the ball rolling in this blogosphere, perhaps somebody can start sharing thoughts, criticisms, or observation, on this fantastic topic : ROBOTS ***remember to include in-text citations!

So, till we meet next week for the assessment, please read and digest chapter 3 for reference to "in-text citation and reference page." Practice - quoting internet articles, newspaper articles,.....

hi mam,
there are three main thing to be consider to make the essay more attractive.first and foremost is providing an attractive points to attract the readers.by doing this the reader won't feel bored reading the essay.second on the line is the way the writer presenting their ideas..just a normal essay wont attract the readers.so the writer should make the essay as interesting as possible..so writers can put some suspense, philosophy, stories, dialog and ext..by doing this, readers will be more enjoying reading the essay.the third important thing is essay without any spelling or grammer mistakes..this will make sure that reader can understand clearly what writer wants to tell.if there is a spelling or grammer mistake,it will cut off the reader's interest to read the essay.in short the essay consider success if the reader understand the essay..

thanks

When we talk about writing one good essay, reading was surely an important element 'in pursuit of scholarly writing'...To include in-text citations, statistics, some beautiful expressions there's only a way which is the best..reading..unfortunately MAYBE lots of us did'nt read much about english articles,newspapers...well,as we all know..in writing,we could discuss millions of topics, ideas and in different angles..so,its quite hard since we lack of input but to pray and hope hardly to get much2 better output..so?maybe when we study this subject, organisation should be okay and perfect for us..
but in writing,it stil back to basics which is the way we generate ideas ,how to write with good words, same like our pmr and spm...sometimes,i heard my friends said "bi nk study ape?dlm kepala je lah yg kite tau"...so?it's surely depends on us!...

Well,ENNF 103 is english writing and indeed it is not like mathematics which we can study to improve for tomorrows exam even we did'nt attend classes for a week..but for ENNF 103,its really in differnt dimensions..its all about our work everyday, constantly and make reading as a habit!

hello madam zue,

First of all, to make a good essay is not easy that we think because....ermm... we need to read more.Try read a lot of articles in newspaper and also do a lot of practice, because from there we can gain a lot of knowledge...So with a knowledge that we get from articles and pratice, we can make a good essay...Don't forget to put quotation and in-text citations in our paragraph, because this two things can make our paragraph interesting and attractive to the readers.Without quotation and in-text citations our paragraph will be boring to the readers. So dunnot forget to put quatation and in-text citations in our paragraph.

Thanks =D

Hollaa!!...Hi Mam...ehmm...'in persuit of Scholarly Writing'....actually wen i read this topic i don't really know what to write....but at a corner in my brain the question about examination triggered me to write something.......'Is Examination a Reliable Assessment?'........well,In Malaysia, examination is the way to assess student's performances. In fact, there isn't any other form of assessment apart from examination. In reality, the purpose of examination is for a summative evaluation. These evaluations are to see if the students understand and could apply the concepts that they have learned throughout the semester. With the examination being the only form of assessment, therefore, it is crucial that the examination must be able to reflect on student's knowledge and performances. Because, being the nature of examination itself, the assessment is very traditional where student who score A would means that the student has gained knowledge on the particular subjects and vice versa. BUT, does that really mean so? How reliable are these examination in reflecting so?
Let us look at these students:

The "it's-about-getting-more-A" students
For these students, getting A is their goals. They consider themselves as being academic successful as long as they could score all As for their examinations. Honestly, with the current education system, it does not take a genies to score A. The thing that I want to talk about is, are they getting their priority right? The priorities of these students are supposed to go to school to learn, not emphasis on scoring for their examinations. However, because the nature of assessment in Malaysia focuses on examination, student's priority can get side track and along the way, the process of learning is not viewed as learning but as a process of scoring. This process of scoring really isn't an honest evaluation on their performance... as we go on to the next point.

The "I-have-good-memory(1terabyte build in brain HDD...hahaha)" students
These students usually do not have a problem when it comes to examination. All they need to do is to memorize every single fact that they read and ta-da!!... they did it. Now, this is very common in Malaysia. They might do it for all subjects or for a particular subject. Any students with good memory can score high marks. The thing is, how reliable are these results in reflecting the students' understanding? Take my friend, KUNG-PANDA(ari's nick act..hehehe) who was doing pharmacy in one of the local university for an example. KUNG-PANDA has no problem scoring for his examinations but when he comes out and works, he finds it hard to cope because he never understands the concept as well as unsure in applying it. See the discrepancy?

The Humanistic philosophies believe that; in order for students to perform well, all basic needs must be provided. This would means looking at student's background as well as teacher's pedagogies. I do not want to go deep into this but I want to pinpoint that, different students with different background will have different expectation in education which will affect their learning abilities. Imagine a student coming from a background where they basic needs are not met, do you think they will perform at their best? For example, student A is from an alcoholic family, however, student A decided that he wants best for himself and study hard for the examination BUT on the night before the examination, his father came home drunk and start abusing him - do you think he will perform well the next day? Let me assure you, he will not. The example may seem a bit exaggerating but we know that Malaysian students comes from different backgrounds with diverse cultures, it would be surprise to hear that not each student's needs is meet.

When we are talking about basic needs, we are also looking at the nature of the examination itself. Some students work best without pressure. This is true. With the time limit given to them, how well do they perform compare to what they would normally have? In this context, the examination failed in providing a reliable reflection on student's best performance.

The spoon feeding students
We usually referred these groups of students as cheaters. Examination being an assessment that is so heavily relied on, in order to perform well, some students will choose to cheat - an easy way out. I don't think I need to elaborate on this - we all know about it.

With the above, clearly examination being the only assessment itself is not a good way of evaluating students. Of course, I could not deny the fact that there are students who do well deserve the merit that they've got but there are many who are out there do not deserve it. The thing is, I felt that assessment itself should be a continuous process, and not just through one process - the examination.............EXAMS!!!! I HATE IT...hehehehe

Assalamualaykum maam. hope you are in best of health.

As I understand from the post, the ball rolling should thread something about robots. So, i'm pleasured to be the first, though i solemnly admit that robots will never be the book on my bookshelf. h ere is just my five cents:

Robots are best defined as a virtual or mechanical artificial agent. When you hear the word 'robot' you should be thinking of a device that is invented with the purpose of lessening human beings' labor. Adding on, to make life much easier. Such research and development has been thoroughly done by developed countries. In fact, a number of countries has created the invention of robots and put into industry for sale. If we go to FuA-Men restaurant in Nagoya,Japan, we'll find that robots perform all of the cooking tasks needed to make eighty bowls per day, serving the customers who come to their small shop. Cool huh? Frankly, I'm not sure whether it's true, because I just clicked on google. If you want to know more about robots, lets make a classtrip to Japan!
