Nowadays, reading opportunities come in abundance. These opportunites are sometimes free of charge - like the free newspapers, free pamphlets, internet materials, leaflets - which we sometimes take for granted. University students can access latest journal articles as well as reports via on-campus database. We even read in the comfort of our bedrooms, home, not to mention nearby libraries as well as spacious book stores or when we're on the move, using communication gadgets.
When I take my children to Pizza Hut, or any family restaurants, one main attraction is the activity sheets laid out on the tables to keep customers occupied while waiting for meals to be served. The puzzles and mazes are simple yet engaging ideas which appeal not only to children but also parents.
Besides, major bookstores like MPH, Borders and Kinokuniya prepare reading corners as well as children's corner to encourage reading for pleasure. Like adults, children also scan through pages, skim for interesting content, not to mention pictures and activites. Other reading-related activities included are story-time and puppet shows which promote children's favourite cartoon characters.
I have only given two examples of reading materials as well as reading opportunities that come in an attractive package. I'm sure we have our own ways and means of encouraging our children, students and younger siblings to read. Some houses have a reading corner, small library, or even a study stacked up with all kinds of books. Some families subscribe educational and leisure magazines be it local or international publications.
Realizing how rich reading opportunity has become, we would expect more than half of our nation to proudly enlist reading as a hobby, or a habit. We would also expect the number of our reading population to increase, compared to the previous decades. Well, is this the scenario? May be, we can start by asking ourselves, first.
Recently, one of my students, Ira, wanted to write an academic paper on reading habits among Malaysians. I supported her interest and I encouraged her to find answers to her own curiosity - references include research papers, reports, newspaper articles, etc. **Ira will be invited to respond to this blog article soon, perhaps with latest statistics.

By now, I think reading facilities and promotions have been satisfactory. Most libraries in Malaysia have organized reading campaigns as well as activities. Most neighbourhoods would have a public library within the vicinity or a bookstore within travelling distance. Most homes have at least cultivated the habit of reading.
What we actually read becomes secondary - story books, comics, novels, magazines, academic articles, newspaper articles, or internet articles...
For reading to become a habit, it has to be like a culture - we learn about it, appreciate it, practice it, and pass it on to others around us. Reading can be very pleasurable indeed. If movies can help to create interest in reading, so pick a movie and then, read the novel. Many readers have done that - of course, some discover that they enjoy reading more than watching the screen for you are not confined to the movie director's imagination and creativity.
Let's hear it from you. What's your favourite reading material? How did you start your reading habit? Who encouraged/s you to read?

Hello, Zuraidah.

some people don't like to read..

It's nice to hear from you again, Qila and misz a. Thank you for continuously visiting & responding to my blog - that's good evidence that you enjoy reading.
Reading encompasses a variety of materials, and if we like reading, we'll find meaning in everything...even scrutinizing shampoo bottles and (who knows)verifying the content! When reading becomes a habit, you won't feel that an article is too long or too difficult - you'll find a way to read it, understand it, relate to it, and better still, respond appropriately.
Hmmm...congratulations! You contribute to the increasing statistics of Malaysian readers:). cheers, zue

It's a kind of common thing...
Like what you are doing right now..
Reading my comments...
I hope so…
You'll get inputs...
And you'll produce outputs from what you’ve read...
Reading allows us to cultivate our memory...
We only read anything we like...
If we hate it...
We don't have any passion to gain our curiosity to discover something new...
I do admit that
I hate reading lecture notes...
But when it comes to quizzes, tests or whatever...
I have to read them...
I must to...
Well...i only read when i am in the mood...
I do love borrowing books from library...
So many books...
But i never read them...
So...
What should i do now???

Ive read few books and I always like reading but not all sort of books , just those that fancy me.
Like thrillers and short stories.
But what makes me interested in books is subject of the book which I think must be according to my personal pleasure and attitudes , which desires me to read it.
Thanks so much for every thing dear Zuraidah

Reading has sort of become a passion for me, I drop by bookstores often to check on the books they have.
Oh and my parents doesn't know that so shhh~.
I cant remember who encouraged me to read, I swear I cant, its just something I get adicted to after a while.
I remeber in primary school when my friends were reading goosebumps while I was reading science, and they were reading harry potter while I was doing Math, yeah, I guess the idea came to me then. I started buying books, hiding them:p, and reading every pass time I had. I started off with books like Goosebumps and the Hardy boys, went on to Harry Potter and now thick books written by Dan Brown and David Baldacci. Hehe, my interest has certainly grown.
And lately, I find myself bein sucked into Shakespear world! Credits to my form 3 history teacher and form 4 english teacher that has always appreciate literature.
All in all, now it seems to me that not reading a book in a day can caue a very devastating effect to myself!
So, shoutout to others that dont, 'pick a book and start scanning, you never know you love something till you finally try it!'
Okay, I've wrote long enough...

well-written thoughts, ara..and i believe this must be one of the magical effects of reading.
Compared to watching tv, or anything like it, reading requires us to use our own cognitive and imaginative abilities and talent to obtain the complete picture of a particular idea. Thus, it's easier to get avid readers to create mental pictures-which helps in describing, explaining, arguing, than others who have not worked to train their thinking capacity.
Read and you'll feel the difference. ara's reading those thick novels and books coz she's used to it already. If you're only starting the habit of reading at univeristy, you may want to work on articles - newspaper, internet, online journals...that will immediately help you in your research and studies. I find reading academic articles and academic books an addiction, at this stage. My children love junior novels...which will eventually grow to thicker ones, I presume.
True true,
I want to say first, for people that has grown used to reading...
try reading those books written by Stephanie Meyer, they're not so educational but its nice and i guess there are some educational value in it as well.
If you often go online for research, you'll find a lot of interesting papers, like lately I was doing my research for my essay, i came across some real interesting things!
Like for example, bisexuality is actually just a state of mind, that for real, they all are bisexual! haha...
interesting2, actually i just wanted to drop by and say that.

Thanks Pn Zue I honestly so surprise because my name appeared at your blog. I appreciate that Pn Zue remember my topic….hmmm… reading…it’s depends on us actually…but sometimes we start reading because of friends. When our friends read novels or what ever material, we will feel that we want the same thing. I agreed with what Zara said, but its reality. I like to read some short stories books, such as Goosebump. It is an interesting book. Reading can be a good habit. It can fulfill our leisure time and can gain lots of knowledge. Reading habits is actually starting at home. Parents should buy some material that can make their children want to read. This is what we call the first step.
reading.. well, i love to read and it has become one of my passion. for me, reading is good as i can gain lots of new information and on the same time i can improve my vocab. i start reading since i still a kid. my family are really into reading and maybe that is how i was encouraged to read. i read lots of books and i dont actually mind the genre and author. but for now, i really into mitch albom writing in Tuesday with Morrie.

reading is like diving into the deep sea... more deep you go, more interesting things can we see.. hehe reading are interesting and wonderfull... but reading won't make you drown hehehe enjoy...
To be honest ,I don’t read much. However, recently I’ve discovered reading blogs is pretty interesting and informative as well.Adding to that some articles in the blogs I follow are really inspirational and has actually help me to reflect on my life and also has made to be a better person in a way.See wat reading can do?Sadly many of us take reading for granted.(I do too sometimes )To actually cultivate the interest in reading, one should start reading articles, magazines & books which interest them the most. For instance, some people might find principle of economics interesting;subsequently they will read more and more as they just cant get enough of it.For me I enjoy reading Islamic books, articles, blog, etc.I have a great curiosity bout my religion.Everytime I read I learn something new and that’s a good feeling because i get to untangle my doubts and answer my curiosity. So,for those of you out there don’t say you don’t like reading until you actually try it.And try it the proper way;go to the bookstore or the near by library pick a book on a topic of your interest and read! (p/s: sometimes i admit im too lazy to read >.< )
Salam pn zue..
I am very excited to share my stands when I found one of your best article-related to reading as a habit.Do you know why? This is because reading is my first hobby.I love to read what ever reading material it is as long as I can read it.Actually, i prefer reading motivational books such as Don't Be Sad and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Even at home, there is a special corner for reading, occupied with lots of books from different genres..If other children asks for toys when going out for shopping, luckily my little brother will asks for new story and activity books.Maybe we have been nurtured by our parent to love and practice reading.
Salam puan Zue..
Reading? For me reading is so important in our live. Reading can gain our knowledge. Even our Prophet also said that. Reading is one way to improve myself. One of my hobbies is reading. As teenager, I love to read comics, novels, newspaper, education book and others. For me, reading is one of way to release stress. When I’m bored, I’ll open book and read it. So, my room full with book. Not only my room at hometown, but my room at Ilmu also. Every time when I going out to shopping mall, I’ll buy at least 2 book. If we see, Korea and Japan, as developed country, make reading as their lifestyle. So, why Malaysia didn’t follow them?

salam pn. zue :)
actually, i dont like reading books especially thick, free pictures and non attractive cover but that was before my friend introduce me a novel entitled 'the book of demonata '. after i read the novel, all of sudden i fell in love with novels and i start to read since that, cant imagine spending most of my time reading. not only novels, i do enjoy reading magazines and any knowledgeable books such as cleo and chicken soup. one of the reason people in malaysia dont read books because books cause lots of fortune to own and they think its a waste. as a student, it makes me think twice to own a book and i rather use it for something more useful. books in other countries are cheaper and it shows why the citizens are intelligent. i think the books in malaysia should low the cost to attract people to buy and read books.
salam madam zue...
honestly i said, i love writing and reading...but lately, i don't have much time to read book that i like coz i have a lot of assignment to do...huhu. okay, i love to read any kind of book especially novel or horror books.. when i reading, i imagine that i was the main character in that books and shows that i'm really feel it...hehehe. who's encourage me???hmmm...of coz my mom and my dad encourage me to make reading as a habit because they said that, if we reading especially english book, at least we can improve our english language right??? so, my parents really encourage me to read english book to improve my speaking skills...reading, it is really important in our life..no matter how you start to read, what books you read, all of that is doesn't matter...important thing is, make reading as your habit and it is really benefits you in the future..
Reading??
one of my hobby actually..
what that i remember i have start my reading habits when i was six years old..at that time,my aunty just return back from oversea after finish her studies there..She gives me a comics title 'Archie'..she say it is good to improve my english..from that time i was crazy with that comics and crazy with readings:)
Before that i was so lazy to read even my mom always buy me a story books:)
I realize reading gives me so much benefits for my own self.It gives me a new knowledge for the things i even know it before.
It gives me ideas what a world looks like.
It makes me to always think outside the box.Not just a straight thinking because sometimes life is hard to say and hard to discover..
My mom always encourage me to read. When i want to buy a book she never say no.
She always give me a support.
Maybe because of that i love to read:)
Reading can help to us develop our mind, make our mind to think and make us imagining !
Greetings Ma'am :)
My family who encouraged me to read. They always give me a books as a present, when it comes to my birthday. At first, i start to read comics EVERYDAY that is Archie's Double Digest influence by my sisters. Then i begin to read novel, its not easy to make ourselves to read the novel because its not like a comic that have a lot of interesting pictures. But i push myself a little to read it and now i have make reading a habit. I just finished reading "Can you keep a secret by Sophie Kinsella" and its brilliant! You may hate reading but you have to try it first and practice yourself to read everyday, even one page is better rather than not reading at all.
Clearly, reading is very important. We can improve our language skills and can be creative etc. Parents must train their children since small to read a lot.To be frank, reading have help me to improve my English and my writing. Just put reading on your hobby list and you might find it interesting someday when you start to read. Also, don't be suprised when you finish reading one book then again, you find yourself walking in a bookstore.
So, Let's Read! it doesn't matter what reading material, as long as you READ!
Thanks Ma'am :)
Have a splendid day !
In our family, my yougest sister which is in standard six this year have the most intrest in reading. It all begins when she was in kidergarten. They make reading story books given as my sisters's homework. So, she must read wheather she wants it or not because the teacher will questions her the next morning. Different book in each and every week. From there onwards, my sister starts to read more and more. It helps her in enhancing her english. Im so surprised when one day she asked me to take her to the community library in pj. They have more books there. That is what she said to me. Can u imagine? She was six years old at that time. After a while, we(the elder sisters) slowly have intrest for reading. The intrest grows as time passed by. Im glad that my parents are very supportive. They will buy us all sort of books that we like. Maybe that is their way of encouraging us to read. Hahah
