One of my students presented a speech on "habit" yesterday and I promised the class that i shall post one short article on the topic in this blog. I guess this topic is close to us, particularly in analysing our everyday attitude, behaviour and personality. Whether we realize it or not, some of our habits potray and also reveal our true selves significantly.
In general, we can think of habits from two perspectives: good and constructive habit, as well as bad and destructive habits. But, how do you draw a line between these two domains? If it is based on principles of life, moral values and common understanding, anything that contributes to the betterment of mankind can be considered as good habit. On the contary, actions that can bring harm, injustice or casualty will be labelled negative. Then, what happens to so-called human rights? Human prerogatives? Freedom of expression of your thoughts, beliefs, and behaviour? Freedom of choice?
Well, in uptight situations like this, we need to remember that we live in a community replete with standard practices and accepted values. Thus, in order not to offend the people around us, as much as we don't want to suppress our freedom to do what we like, we can study the norm of our society. It is polite to observe some ethical considerations as well as unwritten rules.
For example, many of our friends are smokers. We all know that it's a harmful habit, which can be even more hazardous to the people around called secondary smokers. Too bad - some are heavy and chain smokers that they can't quit despite health campaigns and incessant cough. For this group of people, we generally request that they occupy the non-smoking corners at the restaurants, refrain from smoking in gazetted non-smoking areas, and stay away from pregnant ladies and children. In other words, make it a personal agenda.
Nevertheless, even personal habits like biting fingernails under stress, putting one hand in the pocket during public speaking, and taking snacks before sleep should be avoided due to certain conventions and etiquette namely grooming, public speaking and health. Good habits like reading even at bus-stops and in the commuter, or saying thank you, should be nurtured and encouraged.
Interesting? Mind-boggling? Confusing?
Well, think back and evaluate yourself. What are some of the bad habits that you should abandon? Similarly, what are some good habits you shall keep for the rest of our life, promote to friends, and something you plan to adopt in the near future?
Let's get the ball rolling and discuss this interesting phenomenon which is ruling our lives - GOOD vs BAD HABITS.

bad habits can be "acquired" either very early in life (childhood) or picked up gradually as we're growing up.
personally i think that bad habits should be stopped as early as possible, by parents/teachers (or any responsible adult) where children are concerned.
else, the bad habits are only going to end up being a norm (and practically addictive- like smoking) for some.at that stage, to stop it would be near impossible.
I know who's topic that was.
Interesting...
Fact is, many people dont even know that half their habits are WRONG and BAD and they continue doing it. Sometimes even their friends allow them to continue doin whatever they're doing...
It's called a habit, so its not simple to stop it, bad habits, I mean. Its difficult to throw this habits away but its not impossible...
So (GANBATTE YO!), gud luck! You can throw those bad habits away!
agreeing with ara, i wuld say personally i, myself needed some one to point out my habbit sometimes.
In this context, i would say openness is very important if u are willing to change. Thr's no point to ask a drinker to stop drinking if he feels, he is d one n only person correct.as sneha said as well, that we need to stop with an absolute stop for these kinda things since small. I would say preschool and primary are the vital period where children are easily corrected(witness of these periods). I would quote a Malay saying " Melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya". We may think these habits are nothing but think again, how many mat rempit, bullies, killers, rapist, and even bombers we have not stopped. Every single crime would have started with something small and tiny that would have been rubbish once, but later smoking might lead to drugs and even human trafficking since criminal world is vast and interlinked.
I would say talking bout the consequences wouldn't lead to anything, why not we focus on curbing and ways to stop bad habits.
1) Make moral subject as a "subjective" subject n for all. We do not need exams and even forced voluntary work. Bring genuine qualities out.
2) Teachers shuld also b role models. Their every movements n words are vital n influential.
3) Counselors in schools please do ur work at least a bit (experienced in mine)
4) Stop exam orientated schooling. They even get to knw frog thru books.Wat is this man?? We are not living in some red planet. We have environment that is very rich. Show it....
5) Occupy child's time. I dont mean with tuitions, and extra classes n bla2.... give them a break sports, jungle tracing maybe...anything.tats gud .....
6) last but not least give them enuff love n courage. So many kids end up in darkest part coz of this....LOve them up....LOve can beat any odd and hardship.....
I'm saying all this coz i believe things work the best when they are still uncut jewels. we shape them up....try n c..........
Hi Vivek,
I really enjoy reading your comment and prevention measures. Seriously, habits don't appear out of the blue, or overnight. Either give no room for bad habits to exist or cure as soon as you realize it. As for good habits, let's acknowledge and nurture more...rite.
Thanx Sneha and ara for sharing with us your insightful views.
In December 2004, a study was published by the Nicotine & Tobacco Research Journal that alarmed physicians. This U.S survey suggests that despite years of consumer education in print and TV ads and in-office patient education, the great majority of smokers are misinformed about the health risks of their habit. http://www.chantixhome.com/

yessss..i interesting with this topic so much..
good vs bad habit??
of coz everyone have their own habits..either good or bad..because nobody perfect.I also admit i have my good and bad habits in myself..But i think almost my habits is a bad habits..hehehe:)
But the most bad habits that i think i should abandon was my hot temper habits.
I am a person that so easy to get angry..sometimes when i thinking back, the thing that i angry was just a small thing. But i take it serious and i also dont know why i be like that:)
my friend says maybe it is because i have "sindrome last child"
hehehe:)maybe right what that they say, maybe not..
i think i should control my feelings and be a matured person..Not just get angry when i think so..i should think it first right:)
But even thought i was a hot tempered person,i also a forgiving person..
when i feel angry with someone, the best way to forget what that they do to me is i will sleep..
After wake up from sleep i'm totally sure i have forgot what people do to me:)
Just simple like a,b,c right?:)
I do not like to makes a grudge with people..
it will mess my mind:)
i think i should always keeps this habits..for my own benefits..hehehe..:)
and i will try to throw away my bad habits that is hot temper..
It makes me become old:)
you know we are just a human
we had a good habits same time a bad habits
but even that no one can content with his bad habits they tried to justified what he did as a good thing.
so the problem is
how were we confess the other about their bad habits, and quit to did it again?
