Part-time Jobs for Undergraduates

Some people work for money while others work for experience. Some wish to beef up their resume and add credentials in their dossier; thus, stand a better chance for employability. Nevertheless, as an undergraduate, perhaps the priority has to be more of gaining experience as well as extending social and future business network. This is because part-time jobs can also be essential in grooming entrepreneurship skills among undegraduates.

When I was an undergraduate, I spent some of my long semester breaks doing odd jobs like working as a waitress in a restaurant where I also picked up some cooking as well as communication skills, and as a lab assistant in a glove factory where I put my chemistry knowledge to some use. I also worked in a biscuit factory until I got fed up of eating free biscuits - all those delicous love rolls and crackers. Furthermore, I gave tuition classes to primary school children, and was a personal tutor to two well-off children in KL for some time.

Many of my friends were doing part-time jobs while studying mostly because the scholarship or study loan was rather inadequate. Nevertheless, there were friends who could afford almost anything, but still engaged a part-time job for their own reasons. Apart from the extra money, I did all the jobs because I wanted to know what working life is like. One good lesson I learnt from my part-time jobs back then was this: studying is definitely tough and challenging - but working and earning some money on your own without that scroll is nothing easy!!! So, I kinda cherished my undergraduate years ultimately.

I believe that undergraduates nowadays take up part-time jobs because of innumerable reasons. As long as they have a good intention, it should be a worthy experience. It can make them more matured in dealing with everyday challenges and confronting obstacles. Nevertheless, they must prioritize on their education and never get carried away with the monthly income. University education is still very necessary, and undergraduates need the scroll in order to enjoy a more promising future.

I believe many of you have done part-time jobs before. Please share with us your experience and fond /miserable memories. For those who plan to have a part-time job during the long break, what kind of jobs are you looking for and why?

During break semester of my foundation in my country , it was 2 years ago when I went to a mechanic shop to work volunteer for gaining experience for my future career.
One day I was supposed to change engine oil of one auto-gear expensive car when accidentally and unintentionally I took out expensive gear oil instead of engine oil.
The miserable point of the story is walking about one hour under hot summer sun to reach a special shop to buy the oil in expensive price by my own when I had been accused in an unpleasant way by my boss!
But it was my last day of working in that shop.

I wanted to do a part time job so bad while waiting for my SPM results but I got a BIG "NO WAY!" from my parents, so I wouldn have much experience to share...

Regardless, I see all my freinds at work having so much fun and I got so jealous so I wish I'd pick up one as soon as I can...

Hello Pn. Zue! I'm not gone yet!

It is good actually for undergraduates student to work as a part-time.I do alot of part-time job before and I enjoy it.The experience I get while working cannot be buy at any price. You cannot compare at all the scroll that you will get from uniten with the experience you get from working a part-time.

For those who never try a part-time job while study, I suggest for all of you to try it and you'll enjoy it and start to appreciate each cents that your parent give to you.(It's hard man to get money). Trust me.But remember to choose the job that you are interested.Like Confucius once said "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

It is a really good experience for the undergraduates. Yes, cant agree more. ara, Im also facing the symptom before. The BIIGGGG "NO" but what I tend to do that particular time was giving tuition. Of course it was near my house so that my mom can see my act. {huhu)But the best part is, you gain money, get to know other people, their charactheristics and also behaviour. For your information, learning about people behaviour sometimes makes you laugh. But the main point is,I want to express the important of doing part-time jobs.

The benefit are, being matured my friends. It is an easy mission to achieve. You know what action to be taken and what musnt. The its also build up your communication skills. At first, I was very shy when talking to people but who knows, it helps me a lot to become who I am today. Then, MONEY! huhu..my motivation. (haha) This to help you in your daily expenses.Peace. =)

fo the time being..thats all folk..what till next time..

IM BACK!!! huhu

With all that has been said, I guess there's a lot more reason why working part-time job is ever so advantageous. You can get the extra money, the experience all in one.It will also make your resume look extra great especially if you have been working in a job related to your chosen work field.
However, there is still a reason why you should choose not to get a part time job.I went to this talk once in KLCC. There was this guy, I cant remember his name. He said that if a student is already stabled financially, then there was no reason for him to get a part time job, as it would take up half his time. Instead he should be trying out new things, joining clubs and society in his university. This way, he can not only find out what interest him the most, but are also able to find and get acquainted to new people who have different views altogether in the uni. This type of things can be really beneficial if not now, in the long run surely. He also said something about us teenagers having the chance to mess things up now in the name of learning as it wouldnt really affect others much.haha. Not sure how that relate to the topic though. But basically, that's what he was trying to say. If you don't have to work..dont..do something else like joining more clubs and such. But of course, if you dont even do anything useful during your free time, you might as well get apart time job for the benefits of the extra money.
So all in all, there are still pros and cons to taking a part time job. So it really depends on the students themselves on what is better for them.

as for me i really want work in this special sem, since i have only one language subject to cope on.So, eventually i would have plenty of time which may be filled with mork. I've did some part-time job on and off, and i really can value the money, like pn.Zue said, hard work sweat, surely would make you more matured. I feel working part-time would instill some values that you wouldn't get while you are studying. As for my personal experience i've learned to b more patience, relax and as well as independent whr the decision making process left to you absolutely with the + and - of each side must be evaluated.thats all for now...Looking forward to work happily this coming special sem.adioz....

there's few particular reasons that I considered relevant when I first doing my part-time job during last year's special sem.

the first is, I only took 1 paper that sem, which means I only have to spend 6 hours per week at campus. as a matter of fact, I have a lot of empty time to make fool with. I got preety bored easily last time, (and I guess until now too), so doing nothing is a big "No Way!" so I had myself busy as a bartender in The Curve and part-timer in local IT company near Damansara as well...

the second reason is definitely the prospect of self-financial support which is so intimidating... hehe... 1200 per month back then was enough... should I say...

well, after sometimes, I began to realized that the major benefit from doing part time is actually the flaw of something else... the flaw is that our education system is too rigid without any supporting skills that heighten and enhance the value of us, students... communication skills, problem solving, and all other softskill are barely covered in the syllibus and hardly implemented wisely and widely.

with these early exposure, I believe I have catched the first glimpse of working in the real world as an IT Specialist. shocking as it is, since knowledge will not 100% ensure you will have a smooth work day ahead...

Hi ezra,
Congratulations for spending your time wisely. Actually, we can learn so much from experience, that is if we want to. Paper qualification will not promise success without maturity of thought, perseverence, and creativity. Nowadays, emotional intelligence (EQ) supersedes IQ...right...and lots of other common skills like communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills have become indispensable. To the rest, if you could juggle time well between tasks, you may want to consider doing a part-time job.

What an interesting title... "Part-time Jobs for undergraduates"
Actually, I don't really have any experience in part-time job. What do I really experience is only taking the money from my parents :p
Well, sometimes, I'm keep thinking how I can survive without my parents. I’m always looking for a job but then, we should look before we leap right??? I just worry if it will affect my studies. Yet, I realize that I have to change and not only count and depend on my parents. In addition, we always have tendency to use the money gave by our parents unwisely and spend it over on unimportant stuff.
Sometimes, when we get the money from our own hard work, we will start appreciate every single cent and realize how hard our parents want to get the money just for us especially for me and those who come from a middle-range family.
Therefore, in my opinion, it is not wrong to get a part-time job unless we know how to arrange and organize our time-frame wisely so that it will not affect our education. Besides, we can also improve our communication skills and learn how to socialize with community around.

to me, the point i want to do part time job is because i want to gain some experience and want to feel how work life is..

other than that, i also can buy anythings by using my part time jobs salary without burden my parents...at least, i can survive if my parents is not around anymore..

what can i do, i just follow my parents words and insyaAllah, maybe might be a time to me to do part time jobs...

I have done part time job before. It is on July of 2011 which is last year. I remember that time I just finish my foundation years and ready to go to my Degree Years. There is a 3 month long breaks before I start my Degree life. Hence, I decided to do my ever first time part time jobs at that time.
Well, is hard to described my role of my part time actually. I did as a waiter to help customers to order food, but also as a helper stand beside slot machine to help customer to key in the credits. It can not qualified as a easy job because I not only just take care of one slot machine only, but also sometime up to 3 slot machines at a same time. It is quite tough when just started the job. This is because I need to stand for work stand from 11 until 6 somethings if is on morning shift. But worst for me is night shift that need to work from 7 until all the customers back home sleep.
Can you try imagine that almost stand whole day without sit? Although I got be lazy that go to toilet to have seat, but it also cause my leg pain for the first few weeks. After few weeks I manage adapt it and my leg will not feel pain anymore.
Moreover, there are lots of rules need to comply with. First like cannot bring hand phone to sms and make call. That is so annoying and make me less contact with my friends during that time. But it is good also to give us a concentration time to do the work. Second like cannot chit chat and speak so loud during work. But some of the senior also talk so loudly with customers because they are know well each others already.
Lots of experience more I got from this 3 month part time jobs. I can learn more knowledge about the business doing slot machine which I will not know during taking my IT course. Besides, I also learn soft skills like how to communicate with manager, senior staff, friend and customers. I had learn that communication is quite important in social life. Real example when I doing my part time job is customers like to give money tips for those staff who well to speak and can make fun with them. I got experience too getting tips from customers in one night for RM100. Lastly, I manage wider my eyesight that what the society actually like. This is because I met almost all kind of customers during that 3 months. Example like occupation like doctor, lawyer, businessman, even teacher also will come there to gamble. It told me that actually human got 2 faces in the real world and you hard to identify the real identity of him or her, just himself or herself manage to identify.
In conclusion, my part time job for 3 months really bring benefits for me and I plan to go oversea to do another kind of part time job for 2 months in the future during the long semester break. And I hope it will be fun and memorable to me too.

Assalamualaikum Puan Zue,

Well to be honest I only did a few odd jobs here and there and among them was being a research assistant for a few days for my parents friend after SPM, going into it I didn't know what was to be expected of me, I wondered did I even qualified for it. To my surprise all I had to do was handle the paperwork that's involved with the research. I had to organize, provide copies of important papers, stamp the appropriate documents and swore to secrecy not to reveal his work to anybody else. The job taught me that a job title doesn't necessarily mean that you do the same job what people normally perceive.

I think it is important for teenagers to get a part time job so they can learn the value of money. Teenagers are very demanding when it comes to things they want. When we earn our own money, we will soon realise the difference between need & want. Part-time job can help us pay for living expenses. If our parents are helping us with our expenses, taking on financial responsibility takes some of the load off of our parents’ shoulder. Our parents will not be around forever. We have to gradually become responsible for all of our expenses. The sooner we begin this process, the faster we will become financially independent.

Holding down a part-time job during college is important for many different reasons. We will make ourselves more employable, learn some personal and financial responsibility and experience life outside the classroom. Having to focus on our studies is not a valid excuse because there are many options available for part-time work. Some of the students are successful because their part-time job allowed them to learn an important element of success which is time management. If we keep our priorities straight and find a part-time job that is at least tolerable, we will be adding an important element to our future resume which is experience.

Good day Ms.Zue. Part-time jobs for undergraduates are depends on the economy status of the undergraduates. This is because when the economy status of undergraduates is down they have to search for part-time job for overcome their daily expenses. From my opinion there have several advantages and disadvantages of part-time jobs for undergraduates.
The advantages are the undergraduates can earn some pocket money to overcome their daily expenses and buy useful things such as books, stationery items and cloths. Other than that with part-time job the undergraduates can reduce the family burden. The undergraduates also can learn working experiences before they graduate.
The disadvantages are the undergraduates cannot concentrate in their studies if they work overtime and do not have enough rest. Furthermore, if the undergraduates feel the money they won't bother about their studies because they got the money to cover their daily expenses.
So, i hope the undergraduates who doing part-time job should be more concentrate in their studies rather than earning additional money for their expenses. This will ensure they can learn a lot of thing by doing part-time jobs meanwhile can succeed in their studies.
Thank you.

Dear Puan Zue

Every undergraduates eventually needs to consider a career path, and working part-time jobs are a good way to gain experience in determining which career field is right for the individual. The benefits of the experience and skills that will gain from part-time work are huge. Work experience will help undergraduates to sharpen their transferable skills such as teamworking, leadership and negotiation. Moreover, undergraduates should know to balance their studies, work and life and the best way to achieve that is to be ruthless about organising their time so that their priorities don't suffer.

I normally worked as part timer in events. The events that I worked before are education fair, matta fair and ict carnival. Each event gave me different exposure and experiences. My very first job is the education fair which is those universities in Taiwan came over here to introduce their universities and provide scholarships as well. I worked for 2 consecutive years in that education fair. My job was to assist the randomly assigned university to distribute the flyers and explain the courses available to the students if necessary. However, it is just so coincidence I was assigned to the same university for 2 years! The helpers of that university still able to recognise me for the second time.

Next, the ICT Carnival held by Low Yat Plaza is my most recent work. At first, my friend and I did not put so much hope on it since we just applied one day before the event. However, I got the last vacancy due to I e-mailed a few minutes earlier than my friend. I felt sorry towards my friend and so I had to go and work there alone. It was a good experience because I made new friends even with RELA and realized that just like the saying goes, “Do not push your luck.” The reason I felt so is due to I saw a customer kept on buying stuff in order to take part to win his desired expesive product in an event that quite similar to lucky draw. He tried for so many times but he is still so unlucky and only able to get those small and cheap accessories. All of the crew felt so pity on him too.

In my opinion, it is good to work as part time as long as we are still fulfill the responsibility as students such as do not play truant in order to work. We will become more appreciate because we know that it is hard to get money rather than spend it.

Hello

Sharing experience is wonderful thing one must say. Some of us are tend to keep in our own way so that it practically can be seen to others. Well back there when i was living with my family,i dont need to earn money for living but things never gonna be the same as i separately living away.

I hardly cant remember what those moments was all about since i finished my high school. My life as a worker in one restaurant was a real miserable. I get up 4am to get to work and finish around 5pm.That was tiring! But, I regularly meet many new people and able to practice communication skill. At first, it was so hard to understand what people are saying especially when they speak in different language.

However, I managed to pick up some languages for instance germany and french. Starting from that, it inspired me a lot to learn another language like arabic and japanese. Those moment was temporary until i've got opportunity to further my studies in UNITEN.

In addition, i found my life in UNITEN is quite relaxing because all i need to do is just focus on my studies. But it never get apart with work. I regularly help my friend whose his parent own a wedding planner company on weekend. I take this job to generate as my extra money for buying my favorite stuff and other usage. Therefore, when there's job, there's me :D

Though, i hate the boss because i always received unexpected payment. For example, i work hard such as lifting many boxes and install the wedding stage for a day and i only receive RM50. That is ridiculous!

Last but not least, i am now really enjoying my life as a student. I can find part-time job, i can have fun with friends at any time and i have more time to spend with my family. I just hoping that life as a student like forever.

Thanks,
Syau

Many of my friends started to their first part time job since they were 15 right after their PMR, and some will be at their age of 17 which is after their SPM examination.

For me, I started my first part time job as a piano teacher when I am 17. My teacher offer me a job at her centre to teach students from baby level to Grade3 as a new teacher. It was a hard time for the first few months as I have no experience communicating with small kids and I find it hard to express my though to them. For me, it might be something simple and easy that had been embedded in me, but for them, they find it hard to understand and confusing. But after some times of teaching and experimenting, I finally found my own way to express my thoughts to others. And that time, I felt so bad for my teachers last time, is really not easy to teach.

At my age of 18, I change my part time job from a piano teacher to a ballet teacher. This is because I had to teach so that I could memorize all the syllabus of different grades for my ballet diploma. Well, teacher ballet is something harder. Children at the age of 2 came into my class, and once again, I meet my bottle neck, finding way out. Communicating with children is way harder than communicating with adults. I must always remind myself that we have different understanding level, and I have to present my best every time I teach because the students will follows what I do, the way I dress up and the way I talk as well.

I do enjoy working part time, and I am still teaching now on weekend. Thanks to the job, I get to know many friends from all over the world, exploring myself to different kind of challenges, and most of all, I improve a lot in expressing my thoughts. Maybe most of the people work for money, but all my salary will be given to my mum. Without her, I would be able to get all this talent and get to do something different from others.

I have been do many part time job before. My first part time job was selling some kid t-shirts and some toys at the age of 15 when I had finish my PMR exam, after that I have been work as a kitchen helper in a chicken rice shop, it was the most difficult part time job I had worked in my life, the reason is my job is to washing the dish plate everyday. From this part time job I only understand that it was really not easy to earn the money.
Besides this,I also have been work as a promoter to selling the adult cloth in a shopping mall during my school holiday and semester break long holiday. From my opinion, part time job was a very meaningful things, it let us gain new experience in our life, learn some new knowledge or even get more new friends.
Actually, I prefer to go out and find some part time job to do during long holidays rather than stay at house doing nothing everyday. This is because we can earn extra money to reduce our parents burden and we also can get new experience, new knowledge that we can't get from our studies.

Once upon a time, i need a lot of money to pay something and then my fried gave me part time job which was promoter for f&n at nearest shopping mall in Bangi. So it was my first time to work and not bad, within two days of working, my salary was 180. They paid for my fuel also. For me it was worth because I didn't have to do nothing, just need to sell pencil case for school children. I did the part time job for 2 weeks and Alhamdulillah, i managed to collect RM400 for my 4 days of working within two week. I only worked during weekend. For me, it is a vibrant thing that i have ever done. It teach me how to be independent and this is the first time I earn money with my own effort. So maybe in the future, I would like to find a part time job which is more challenging. For example like marshall or trainer.

Doing part time job is a really interesting experience that i always want to undergo and have an experience of it. Therefore during my sem break, i was so excited to give a try on part time job. I worked as a cashier in a supermarket. It was a terrible experience for me although i tried to cope up with that job but still i cannot take anymore the way that i need to do my job. Too many stuff needed to be memorized and worst of all I need to stand for long hour and this makes me become tired easily plus I need to deal with all the customers. Finally after working for two days I decided to quit that job and I did not get paid. Anyhow it was my first part time job experience that will be my bitter sweet memory.

Hi puan zue..from the minute i'm answer my last paper for SPM till now, i'm never get chance to do a part time work.. My parents always say NO when i ask for their permission.. For them, its better that i stay at home, helping them to watch over my little brother and do the other work that a 'sister' will do.. And 2weeks after SPM, i have to attend PLKN for 3month.. Then, sit for the driving license, and after that i got a call from Uniten.. So i never get the chance to do a parttime work.. But for me, doing part time during holiday or semester break must be memorable experience for them..

I do believe many university's students had done their part-time job during the break after SPM. One of their reason is they need to have experience before they have a real work environment soon after they completed their study. For me, I do not have any experience of any part-time job because after I finished my SPM my mother ask me to just stay at home. When the result come up I straight away apply to UNITEN and further my study here. In my opinion, part-time job is important because it can give us a little bit experience before we have our own job later. So that later we no need to shock when we are already in work environment. For me, I need to try harder to make me feel comfortable with my work later on because of I do not have any work experience.

Norfadilah Abdul Rahim said...

Salam and hye Pn Zue :)

Honestly I never have any experience doing part time job even though I have the opportunity to do so. It is because during my breaks, I will have to look after my niece and nephews. It is such a tiring thing to do (plus I didn't get any paid!!) but I sacrifice myself and also my precious time for the sake of my brother. Soon, I realize that looking after those children makes our bond become stronger and of course I really enjoy seeing their cute and cheeky acts. Though sometimes they annoy me, I still love being with them no matter what they do or how they act.

Hmmm..Back to our topic, for me doing part time job have their own pros and cons. It is up to individual on how they would take that. I agree that some people work just to get experience while others work just to get the extra money to buy their needs. If I am given the opportunity to do part time job, I would like to gain experience as many as I can and of course I also would like to know how working environment actually is. So there should be no problem or at least help me to adapt my working life later ( I hope so ^__^).

For me part time job is really important in gaining the first time experience in working while you still studying or an undergraduate student. I did not do any part time job until now, but i gain an experience in working while doing my industrial training when I was studying at polytechnic. But deep in my heart I really wanted to do a part time job. The reason is to me when you obtain a valuable work experience, you can write it down on your resume to make your resume more appealing and great.

When I'm doing a part time job I'm going to learn how to effectively manage finances. Even if it is simply using their earnings to pay for their own expenses, they will learn to budget between clothes, movies, and car expenses. This will also make me to instill new confidence, sense of responsibility and independence. But of course you need to have an excellent time management skill to differentiate between your part time job and your homework while you are studying because now you have two responsibility. That is my opinion.

Part time job? Ya, when you are in holiday while waiting for new session of academy, we should do something to fill the time up. One of the way is doing part time job, let say if you have family financial issues, you could work as to cover up those expend in the university life. I was adult already, and I need to be independence, not always depends on family income. So I got my part time job during the 3 months long semester break year 2011. I gain new knowledge and experience, and of course I met new peoples. At last, the salary that I earn are used to pay the accommodation fees in UNITEN. So working part time does have pro and cons, but as if the student have a good time management skill, then I think studying while working a part time job wont be a burden.

Salam Madam Zue,
Hello everyone. I know not many of you out there care to read my post regarding this matter. Anyway, this is my view concerning students having part-time jobs. Everyone has different reasons and opinions about whether they should get part-time jobs or not. Mostly people around me especially my parents claim that the main task of a student is studying hard so that after graduation, I may get a good degree (MAY GET~ I repeat, MAY GET), which offers me a better opportunity for well-paid jobs. And there are some people who likes to work to meet new people (if you know what I mean), or maybe they want to work because of financial problems and many more reasons for a student to work part-time. However, from my point of view, students who work possess a better time management skills than students who are not employed. I do not have a severe case of financial problem, but I like to work because of the experience that I can get. And, I prefer works that are not related to my major, Graphics & Multimedia. Why? I just like to try new things and my course needs me to be creative in many ways. That’s why.
I used to work at the kiosk in UNITEN administration building, and few stationaries departments back in Kedah where I learned how to use the photocopy machine and the machine for binding papers. I used to work at the nursery centre as a ‘babysitter’ where I learned how to handle toddlers in an efficient and professional way. Also, I used to be a mathematics teacher at a tuition centre where I teach primary school students about maths. From all the experience that I’ve gone through, the working environment teaches me how to cooperate with others to complete the work given by the upper management and teaches me to organize my time.

To conclude, in my opinion, a part-time job can provide both training and experience which gives me an insight into what work is about and prepares me psychologically for my future jobs selection. TQ for your time! =)

Well, I almost had a part-time job in my previous university. I was offered by the university board a tutoring job but I had to take an English Proficiency test. So I took it and I passed. I was promised an online tutoring job for High school students. I had several conferences with the board, but the board didn't follow through with their planned online tutoring system due to some complications. I was not disappointed or anything, because I hate to be engaged to a "job" let alone a teaching job, because it's a big responsibly that I don't think anyone can handle, it's not what I want to be or in another words, I don't think I'm capable of teaching.

Hmm, what kind of job I'm looking for? Well, I always wanted to work as a freelancer. I don't want to be engaged to want company or one job. but if I had to choose, it'd be something related to graphic design :). Why? because it's something I'm passionate about.

Working as part time job will put you head and shoulders in front of other candidates when you apply for the full-time job you really want because you had great experience of doing part time job and if you really want to seek experience don’t work just to earn money but to learn and alternatively, you can work so hard and to show your bosses how dedicated you are and for sure it will lead great position. The most things that make people fail is that they have only one thought which is to just get money and never bother about their experiences which is very important in real workplace. As a college student, there are many ways to acquire experience that is career related. Internships, practicum experiences, job shadowing, and co-op experiences are just a few of those options. Part time jobs can provide several benefits for college students. One is the financial benefit it definitely helps to have extra spending money and money to assist in paying for college expenses. Aside from that, part time jobs begin to establish a work history for the future. For that reason, students may want to carefully consider and select their part time positions in order to acquire valuable work skills to gain an edge in today's job market. By carefully selecting job experiences, you can fill in gaps in your education and experience that may make you more attractive to a potential employer after graduation.
Part-time job, whether in a fast food restaurant, taxis or in a prestigious firm, can still help develop skills important to a potential employer after graduation? These skills may include leadership skills, people skills, and the ability to make a commitment to an employer and follow through, the ability to work as part of a team, complete tasks and accept constructive criticism. The skills learned in your part-time position will expand and increase your skills and abilities as well as benefit you financially. A part-time job will helpful if you do it while your study is under process. It will help you in studies and will also earn an invaluable experience.

Before getting a good job, everyone needs to try many other jobs. The time when people take the “other jobs” is different for different individuals. To me, one of the best moments to try initial careers is student time. Indeed, this is the best period in human’s life to absorb knowledge and learn experience. For some reasons, I think students should take a part-time job.

For one thing, students taking a part-time job can get more experience for their future job. Actually, if a student manages to find a job that has things related to their lessons in school, they are lucky because they can apply what they learn in books to their tasks. Those who cannot find an appropriate job still benefit since they can have more experience dealing with circumstances that confuse them. The ability to respond to many kinds of circumstances is really important in any job, and taking a job when people are young turns them into skillful employees. For example, a student tutor can have chance to practice to be a teacher in future; students working as sale assistants not only know about the way to sell many products but also learn the method of managing and controlling the whole business from their bosses. So, taking a job beside studying is a good choice for the young to solidify their position in the future job.

In addition, when doing a part-time job, students can practice the lesson got from classes. Knowledge got from teachers is never enough. Students can only understand the meaning but they never understand the application of it. Students who study about economy can practice their knowledge by cooperating with a company. In this way, they can understand how managers calculate the net present value or how they can operate their companies to get bigger profit, or how they calculate the risks as well as the chances so that the companies can avoid encountering fiascoes. Another example, learning English with people who have the same nationality with you is never enough, and taking a job requiring a good demand of English can make it up, you can practice English with foreigners by working as a part-time tour guide, translator or interpreter. Knowing the application of the knowledge got from books is the most necessary part of studying, and a part-time job can help you in such case.

Finally, when doing a part-time job, students can earn money by their own so that they can grow up. Why can people grow up in this way? Students usually spend their parents’ money, they do not have to work hard so they hardly know its value. It’s not until they have to try their best that they set much value on their parents’ money and long-lasting effort to bring them up. When they have to work to earn money for themselves, they will sure find how difficult it is. Furthermore, young people have to deal with many awkward cases that require them to react quickly though sensibly to get the best result. Such environment of work does not allow youngsters to be childish, indeed, they need to grow up in their thought and their action to adapt to the world of adult and business.

To sum up, I can say that doing a part-time job does students good. They can get more experience for future job, practice the lesson got from classes and grow up. For the reasons I have mentioned, I am going to seek a job for my self and do it with all my best to grow out of my own ebullient thought and action.

Nowadays every student needs some amount of money for their personal needs, so they have an great way of earning by doing some hours work which is commonly called part time job. As we see many students are attracted toward part time job because their pocket money are now insufficient as it is becoming hard for parents to afford their expenses on dinner treats, parties these things might not so important but for students this is as important as studies. Therefore students can learn the value of money when you work and earn it by yourself. Students are very demanding when it comes to things they want, so when you earn your own money soon you will realize the difference between need and want. When your parents pay for it, it's a want. It also sets you up for better money management when you’re out there in the big world by yourself.

Well I have worked twice as a part time, the first work was in a furniture factory and the second work was in a construction site for ministry of oil in Iraq. I would like to share with you the experience I got. Hahaha it’s just funny when I remembered the first day at the factory that day is unforgettable day ever. The supervisor asked my friend and me to produce a hundred desks and I was like ARE YOU SERIOUS SIR?? It’s my first day here how come you want me to produce a hundred desks? His respond was “change your cloth and start working son”, so we started at 9:00am until 10:00pm we come up with 40 desks only where the others come up with 200 or more desks, the workers there they said it’s okay it’s your first day here don’t worry, but the supervisor came and gave us a big box we thought that was a gift and everybody was surprised and they were saying how come these guys got a gift and we didn’t get anything, they were telling the supervisor it’s not fair you gave these two a gift and you never give us a gift, the supervisors was laughing he asked us to open the box so we just agreed to open the box and what we found there is 15 augers that we have spoiled during the first day of work each auger cost (6.5$) so everybody were laughing on us for 10 minutes I guess, that was my first day at work

hi madam,
ive been teaching at a part time tuition centre for the past 3 years. Teaching those kids and earning at the same time has significantly developed my social skills as well as providing a sense of being independent. The feelings you get upon spending your own hard earned cash is all worth it. My most exciting part time job was during thaipusam festival last year in bt caves. We created a tshirt with the design based on a popular song back then 'why this kolaveri di' and sold 3000 pieces in a week. The cost of one shirt is RM 12 and our marketing price was RM 25. It was indeed a huge profit for my entire team and it is where i realised my potentials in entrepreneurship. i would strongly recommend students to involve in part time jobs as it will make them learn more about themselves and at the same time to learn to feel independent.

I've done some part time jobs but it never something that related to my studies. after finish my spm i work at the hair saloon. that is my first job and i know nothing about what i'm doing and the pay is horrible too but i manage to keep the money and i pay the for the driving lesson on my own and get my driving license eventhough my mum do offer to pay for those. the other part time job is while semester break in uniten, i work at a supermarket. working there is so tired and there is always a load of work to do. I even have to work on hari raya until 4am in the morning. thank god the pay is good. but one thing for sure, i will never work there again and while studying in uniten i do few part time job. one time, i work at the san francisco pizza and the other time i work at the d'tasek restaurant. both of the job have nice pay. however, i couldn't manage my time well. everyday after class, i have to work. then when my shift finished its already midnight. i have no time for studying or even hanging out with my friends. i just had one day off per week. even on weekend, when my fiends go out i can't tag along. the thing i learn from having a job is being responsible and how to manage my time and money. having a job can give you wonderful experience but working while studying is not a very good idea unless you really know how to manage your time. as for me, i'm don't.

Hye I'm Navhin s/o Gopal(SW087623),

I felt that the time pass by very slowly during working, though that i tried my best approach the customers. The hardest 5-hour standing, promoting and walking. While the break time (5pm -6pm) felt like just a short moment.

It's quite hard to push the sales. Most customers are Malays, I found that the razor is somewhat expensive to them regardless of how good that product is. They prefer something economical and good enough.

Apart from the experience I get throughout the working hours, I found that Malay man love their family, they take care of their kids besides pushing trolley and let their wives shop.

Simply said from Part time job i learned so many things and its a good lesson for me.

assalamualaikum and good day,

As for me, there are two reasons why i choose to do part time job. Firstly, i wanted to help a friend of mine who opens a burger stall at kelompok ilmu. It's a fun thing to actually work while studying, regardless of having to divide between my study time and also my working time. But you will have to manage it eventually. It all starts when my friend ask me whether i have free time so i told him if yes, why? so he asked me to help him at the stall and i said yes . as this is going to be my final year in UNITEN, i decided to help my friend. so i start helping him at the stall. Of course i feel awkward for the first time selling burger but i learn from the experience of others. i haven't done any part time job within these 2 years. So, it's a new experience for me and it is kind of fun getting to know people and spend some time with my friends after all. At the same time i get to help my friend who are looking for some extra money in order to cover the fees.

For the second reason, i want to be independent. i'm the type of person who don't like to ask money from my parents because i have 6 younger brothers and sisters. so i don't want to burden them and they can concentrate with my other siblings. in the same time you will feel how hard your parents trying their best to find money to send you to school so that you can appreciate them more for what they have done to send us to school. =)

I have done some part-time freelance job as a graphic designer after my SPM. Some of the things I did was making poster for certain events and functions. Clients usually are satisfied with the work I've done for them. First reason I choose to have a part-time job was to gain experience in the field of multimedia. The work culture was an interestin experience. Second reason was I wanted some money to buy a new phone. As my old one was not working well, I had to save some money for a new one. To be honest the experience gained is so much more valuable than the money received. I've learn so much from working part-time.

Part time job is one of the experience that almost everyone have been through. In my experience, i have worked at several different places like sawmill, factory and hotel. Even though the salary was not high at sawmill but the experience i have gain is quite valuable. I have realized how much education can help us in our future because people who work there are not educated and they have to work too hard to get a low salary and believe me friends, work at sawmills require a lot hardwork, strength and consistency. The lesson i learnt at my part time job is to work hard in our studies and career. We have to use our chance now for a better future.

ps : Pn Zue i have already sent my entry and if Pn Zue received the last one, Please ignore this.

As it is mentioned in the discussion, first of all, part-time job is the best way to get experience even if the job doesn’t relate to your specialty profession. There are skills of communication with people, skills of learning by performing that you will never learn from book because they have to be experienced in life. It is not easy to do first steps but this practice definitely will be the most valuable contribution in your future life. Moreover, money that student can get through part-time job are also a good motivation for undergraduate students. You learn how to earn money so you know how much it costs to get it and therefore it helps you to don’t waist it but to save it or spend it on something important.
As to me, I have never had this experience but I would love to try my strengths and as soon as I will have my internship I won’t miss that chance. Also I believe that all theories that we learn, we will never understand it if we don’t experience it!

I think it's a great idea to have a job while you are a University student. Finally, you can learn to earn your own money. You don't have to ask for money from your parents.

it helps you in improving your relationship with people specially your communication skills .You'll learn to listen to the others. You will learn much about patience and tolerance. If you were an introvert person, you'll become more sociable and you'll learn how to communicate. We know communication is a base rule of a modern society.

in my opinion having a job during school times is hard ,for its Rather difficult to balance your time between studying and working . That's why it is better for you to take a job while you're on vacation. You'll see your parents will treat you as you were an adult person. They will trust you more. You will have more self-trust. Finally, you will be more proud of yourself.
Finally when you get a job, while you are a student you have to think first if you can handle it. You must be very true to yourself. Because , work it's hard. It takes time and patience. It asks for a lot of effort. Are you prepared to have a job while you are a University student?

Hello Zue .. and everyone
The Part-Time job undergraduate depend on student who have free time. Some student got some reasons of employment, family responsibilities and or can’t able to carry the full course load of 15 credits each quarter. I think this is the best reason student will face it to work a part time job undergraduate. Last time I got holiday for two month waiting for long semester then I work as delivery for document from embassy Saudi Arabia to kl it’s was simple work and I really enjoy because my salary was by daily . After that I get some experience for example I have to wake up early, I have to take care of everything in what I do and responsibility. So I think this is the easier way to make some money and to get some experience for your future path..
Hope everything clear .. THANKS ALL OF YOU .

I personally feel that a part time job for undergraduate is common nowadays. Students do get a part time job while they are in semester break. I don’t argue when student go for a part time job to earn a little bit of money even it is not enough to support their university fees. Earning RM5 - RM6 per hour can’t really support the university fees but it does support student maintenance for couple of month. From my experience, right after I finished my diploma, I applied for jobs and the interviewer ask me if I have been working before. The question asks might well be interpreted as they want someone with experience to be working for them so that they would not waste their time to train people. Thus, I really do think undergraduate should go for part time job for money and experience. Experience do plays an important role for any jobs interview.

Nik Ahmad Syahmil Atif Syah Bin Nik Mat (GM090738) said...

Should undergraduate work part time? Definitely, undergraduate should be working for part time jobs. They should be doing this so that they could gain all the experience they can get. Experience is important criteria to be add up in the resume. Did you notice that most of job advertisement do wants a candidate have experience in the related jobs at least by 1 year? Getting a job really is though nowadays. This is why some of the student in universities has been working part time so that they could gain more experience as well as earning some pocket money. But beware; part time job is not easy to do while you are still studying. They would need to arrange their time effectively between studying and working. If you manage, you can excel in both studying and working at the same time.

Part time jobs for an undergraduates has its pros and cons all at the same time. Most of the undergraduates over look the cons and just look at the pros where there will have money flowing in to their wallets. They usually become very happy to spend the money around which they earn and end up completely using it up. The dark side of having a part time job and being a full time students is, students will be sacrificing most of their time which may be used to relax by taking a nap and having a social life among their college/universities friend. They will also have to stay up late after their work to attend to their assignments and to prepare for their classes, quizzes and tests. In addition the exhaustion will cause the students to have mood swings very easily. Plus part time job can never be counted in a resume as only full time jobs gets acknowledge by employers. As we all know part time jobs do not pay well the maximum a person can get from a part time job is Rm5 to Rm7 thus making it quite pointless having to deal with all the cons which overpower the pros.
In my point of view, if an undergraduate really wants to build their resume and have a good amount of cash flowing in for them to do their savings or channel it accordingly to their wish a full time job is the best choice. Undergraduates should use their semester breaks to enroll themselves with a job instead working during their semesters. Holidays will allow them to have full access to manage their time for work and rest. Doing so undergraduates have higher chances to gain experiences as employers prefer full timers instead of part times. They can also establish themselves in the working life and gain qualities which will make them more productive and knowledgeable when they return to from their semesters breaks to their colleges/universities. Thus making them the perfect undergraduate which will increase their employability after graduation. If u are reading this comment, do think of taking up a job during your holidays as u will prosper will more benefits rather than having a part time job after your class. Believe me I tried it myself and ended up leaving my part time job.

Having a part-time job is not about money, that’s the reason it is called part-time. These jobs are good for students because it helps students gain experience in the working world. I had a part-time job once, and to me, it was an extremely fun experience as the job I had revolves around cooking, one of my many hobbies. To tell you the truth, during those days, I didn’t even care about the money; I did the job merely for the fun of it unlike many others who do it for some extra pocket money. This is a worthy goal, as students nowadays need the money for their everyday life, as their educational funds are limited. Students should get part-time jobs because it helps them build up their self-esteem, meet various types of people, gain new knowledge, gain experience in a working environment and get to find money with their own hands instead from their parents. Some students complain that their work is too hard or not to their liking. Well, that is the life beyond your studies, so deal with it. Part-time jobs introduce you to the world of hardships you encounter in your everyday life, so it is a very good idea that students get a part-time job rather than doing nothing during the holidays. It helps groom you to become a humble person by showing you how hard to earn a few bucks, and give you a slap that if you don’t take your studies seriously, your part-time job is going to be your permanent job. Who am I to say, I’m just a student who loves his part-time job, what about you?.

P.S : I do agree with what Jesjeet commented, part-time jobs has their pros and cons. Luckily for me I had mostly the pros instead of the cons.

Part-time jobs for undergraduates is not an easy job because they have to divide and manage their time wisely so that they can excel in both studies and work. There are pros and cons of doing part-time jobs while studying. Students can use the money for their college or daily expenses. The advantages of undergraduates doing part-time jobs are to encourage them to be independent, responsible, know what it means to earn a handful of cash and gain more experiences which will be very useful in future. Furthermore, students will also get a chance to learn the leadership skills and know how to work in a team. The disadvantage of students doing part-time jobs is that it takes up time. As a student, time is one of your greatest assets especially when your course gets tougher and more time is needed for revision. Besides that, the ugly truth about part-time jobs is that you will rarely find a part-time job which can help glamorize your curriculum vitae (CV). In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages of undergraduates doing part-time job which you have to consider. Therefore, think twice before you take any decision because a wrong step may lead you to the wrong path.

Shamili Nagalingam said...

Do undergraduates need to commit themselves to part-time job? I would say it depends on the students.
Basically undergraduates do part-time job to fulfil their money need. There are loans that help us to settle our tuition fees but does it also covers our pocket money? NO. Living cost nowadays has increased and it is hard for even middle-class families to provide pocket money or allowances for their child.
Thus, it is not wrong for undergraduates to work part-time to provide for themselves. Part-time job definitely reduce the burden of our families as well.
But taking up a part-time job is not easy for an undergraduate. They should exhibit a good time managing skills. They have to manage between studies and the jobs. Part-time job should not be a cause for them to decline in their academic performance.
Therefore, one should know their own abilities whether to do part-time job or not.

Halim Elah said...

It’s quite common for student to have part time job nowadays. Either because they want to get more money, paying their student fees or just to get experiences.
Having part time job as student is a perfect timing. This is the time when you don’t have so many commitments, lot of time to kill (especially in junior and sophomore year) plus you’re young and energetic.
Part time will introduce student to the ‘real world and real people’. It’ll help them to improve their PR skills, time management and how to appreciate money.
What’s important is what kind part time job we should look for. In my opinion, student shouldn’t take a job that so hard and tiring. Some of the job has a long working hour. Job like this will get the student tired and the result is, he or she will unable to focus on their study.
I used to work at a company with day to day operation, 6days a week 12 hours per day. I’m become really tired during end of the day, and spend the whole Sunday with chores and sleeping. With this kind of job, of course I can’t concentrate to my study even just one subject or a project for that semester.
So other than how much money you can earn, if a student want to get a part time job, they must consider the working hours, work load, location and either it shift base job or not, so it'll not be a burden to them and affecting their study.

I strongly agree that undergraduates should find themselves a part time job as well.
Some says that working part time job will affect our study, but i don’t think it is, because no one will spend all their time for just study and study. What they do most of the times are just looking at their pc, scrolling facebook, watching drama, or using smart phone to chit chat, that's a kind of wasting time. Just take me as an example, after i start working part time job, i stop procrastinating and start to manage my time nicely. I know when to do my assignment, when to study and so on, because I know I have no much time to procrastinate.
I'm working part time job as a promoter, cashier and more. It just use up few hours, like 4hours in weekday and 8hours in weekend. We can still finish our task and keeping a good result. But we can earn some extra pocket money to reduce parent’s burden and buy something we like.
Some says that we don’t need to have a part time job because we can use our pointer to get a loan or scholarship. But we need to know that scholarship will only pay for our tuition fees, most of them won’t cover up our spending in daily life, so we need to troublesome our parents again. So why don’t we just use a little bit of time to earn some pocket money and reduce parent’s burden. It is not even quarter of a day.
By working part time job we can gain a lot of social experience which is so useful in our future. In working place we can observe a lot of human attitude which u can’t learn in college or university. Over time we can familiar about human attitude, we can know exactly what the person need and what the person don’t like. After all I trust that most company will hire someone that have above average cgpa with working experience instead of a top cgpa student with no working experience.
Besides that, by working part time job we can know a lot of friends from other place too, this can increase our social circle, it is very important for us to have a big social circle. Let’s say one day our company transfer us to a new working place that we are not familiar at all, then we can call up friend in that place to give us some guide.

In conclusion, undergraduates need to have a part time job to enhance their knowledge and also learn to become independent.

In today’s society, many undergraduates are having part -time jobs. In my opinion, I entirely agreeing that every undergraduates should have a part-time job during their free time. This is because, I think that having a part time job can train the teenagers how to earn money and let them know that it is not an easy thing to make money. Then they will use their money more carefully because they know the value of the money. Besides that, I think that being a university student, if we want to buy something we really want, we should earn money by ourselves, not using the money of our parents. By using our own money, we will not feel guilty anymore. If the kids can earn and give the money to their parents for sure their parents will be happy to see their children to stand on their own foot. The second reason is by doing a part time job, they will have the working experience and have the chance to adapt the different relationship between classmates and colleagues earlier than the people who do not have the part time job. Having the working experience can help teenagers find their ideal job more easily in the future. And the teenagers can also learn how to deal with the problems that may happen in their future working circumstances. Third, undergraduates can also expand their interpersonal relationship by having a part time job. In the recent year, interpersonal relationship has become the most important factor in our working environment. If we have a good relationship with our colleagues or friends, when we have problems or want other people to help us, they will try their best to help us. I have read an article before and there is a saying goes, “Without friends, we will not do anything perfectly.” I have the same thought with the writer of this article. Interpersonal relationship is really important in our working place.
In summary, perhaps many people will think that having a part time job may affect our studies, but I really think that having the part time job can help the undergraduate student’s future become much more better, no matter in their attitude towards money, in getting working experiences, or in interpersonal relationship.

Since I graduated my Matriculation College, I've been offered to work as a part timer to a private company somewhere in UPM. Until today, I still working. Luckily I have a very nice employer which they consider about my timetable.

The best thing about working while studying is you gain money. And you gain more contacts which might useful for your future. If you are very close to your boss, he or she might be so kind and willingly to sponsor your fees if you get a good result. It motivates you to study smart in your studies. In addition, you can get a clear picture on how organisation works.

Before getting a permanent job, everyone needs to try many other jobs such the part time jobs. It’s because when doing a part job shows how the jobs is done and how the job is look likes. For me, undergraduate students is really suitable for doing this part time jobs. Exactly this is the suitable time for undergraduate to learn and experiencing with a part time jobs. I convinced that student should take a part time jobs.
It’s because when I heard many people argue about students who are taking a part time job will bother their study time and make them feel tired even sleepy when in class. I agreed with that because yeah maybe his/her part time jobs is not in the suitable day. Yes, doing a part time jobs also help us to increase our pocket money and not people are in the same condition. Maybe there are student forced to do a part time jobs because they doesn’t afford to settle their fees. Then, for student that afford it that’s fine. They doesn’t need to do any of these except they want an extra pocket money.
Many people sees that “a part time jobs” is a job that only exerting a lot of energy that cause them unable to perform a good quality in any classes. That’s totally not right, now we are in IT’s era, everything is in our fingertips. Why not we search or doing a part time job using this IT capabilities? Everything is online! It’s better than we work as a part time jobs in restaurant etc that consumed a lot of energy that affected us in studies.
The some reasons people says that they doesn’t know how IT works, it’s okay actually, if you prefer or comfort with any other jobs instead online jobs, that’s fine. You just need a suitable time for doing that job, such a weekend or something that doesn’t affected your time in studies.

I have no doubt that part time job is needed to undergraduates. To those from a rich family, they might have a enough money to pay the fees n bill especially in private university. But as a student from moderate or poor family, they need to work to to reduce their family burden to pay whatever it needs to study n stay in campus. Moreover, we can get and gain experience that cannot be found in campus. While working, we accidentally learn a new thing and the most importantly is our skill also can be enhance. We can put our study into practice, it's prove that student who studied for accountancy and management has a big opportunity to find a job. Nowadays, it's easier to get a job if we had any connection to someone in the company that we're looking forward, so we need to make networks to outsider that will give benefit to our self

I'm totally agree with your point in this topic,Dr.Zue. Taking part-time job can earn money that we can use for ourself.Sometimes we dont want to burden our parents to give us a pocket money eventhough this is their responsibility.Thats why we taking part-time job.The feeling when we use our own money instead of using our parents money when we want to buy something is different. We will feel very satisfied using our own money that we earn to go to shopping.

Working experience is important as well for us as a student. This will make us easier to adapt in working environment.Even we just working as a casher,waiter/waitress,or as a cleaner,we still get an experience. Some other people say that,we as a student should not taking a part-time job because we will lost focus in our study and cannot manage our time well.Come on dont always think negative.Base on my lecture's experience when she was a student before, she's took a part-time job to earn an extra money for herself. She's even took 3 kind of work. She can manage her time well. Now she got her PhD.

So no excuse for us saying that "cannot manage time or lost focus". Other people can do it why not us?.In my oppinion for student who want to take a part-time job, just take it.Dont bother think about what other people say about student who taking a part-time job while studying.Like what Dr.Zue said, other people have their own reason to take a part-time job.If we have a passion to do it,just do it :).

It has been a while since I've last did a part time job. My first was back in the States, working at a fast food chain, McDonald's. It was a hard job to be honest, so I am one of the few who understands why some of the servers are not as friendly as they could be. Experience builds character. By going through the workload myself, I could empathize with those who do them. Experience is a wonderful teacher.

Though, should undergraduates do them? Yes, and no. The primary responsibility of students would be their grades and education. Some of our parents send us to where we are, so that in the future, we would have some sort of leverage in job applications. The job market is very competitive and we have to secure our future through excellence in all aspects of our lives.

To those who have a family with financial problems, there are variable methods to obtain scholarships and loans. We should take responsibility and take it upon ourselves to excel in whatever regards to fulfil the requirements set by the respective organizations.

Seize the day.

That too, shall shape you into a better, stronger, you.

All over the world, undergraduates, even high school students, partake in part-time jobs. Admittedly, some of the points, especially regarding gaining experience and money are both sound. However, while that may still apply to certain situations, the times have changed. Most of those benefits can now be attainable without doing part-time jobs.

In my opinion, undergraduates need to be focusing more on their studies. This is due to the fact that first and foremost, they are students. Studying should be their main concern. If they work part-time, they will have to juggle between studying and working. This will lead to fatigue in classes, and this is considering if the undergraduate has good time management. Those who aren’t are even negatively affected.

While in the past, the financial help for students are hard to come by, nowadays there are lots of scholarships and loans available. Granted that they come with terms and conditions, but even part-time jobs have those. Furthermore, these terms and conditions usually involves the scholarship or loan bearer to work at the host’s company. This is another plus, since it will ensure, at the very least, the bearer a job upon graduating. All of these perks can be attained if the undergraduate performs in his or her studies.

As for experience, as I have mentioned earlier, the times have changed. The syllabus nowadays will have more than enough assignments and tasks for undergraduates to build their experience in their respective fields. For those who wish to accumulate experience in other fields, universities presently offer internships as part of their courses. Internships will cater to that need nicely.

In addition to that, part-timers will rarely be given jobs of high responsibilities. Such jobs are the ones that will yield the undergraduate the most experience. Nevertheless, companies will not hand over such tasks easily. They would prefer full time employees instead. Furthermore, in the event that a part-timer get such tasks, how much credibility that he or she has to build up first? That would take a lot of time, which a student only have in limited amount.

To wrap up, I again reiterate that undergraduates should not take up part-time jobs in tandem with studying. There is no need to rush your life so much that you should throw yourself into the working world, along with its worries and responsibilities. You should cherish your youth and commit to your current responsibilities as a student first before adding working responsibilities to your plate.

Thank you.

I will take side that undergraduate should go for part-time jobs!
Taking on a part-time job while pursuing a degree is hard work, but the benefits are typically greater than the amount of a paycheck. Students who work during their college careers may have better time-management skills than their counterparts. They must understand responsibility and apply it to their daily lives.
Often, students work jobs that introduce them to their preferred career after school is over. This allows them to gain important introductory experience in the business and begin networking with those in that field. Even students who work in places not connected to their majors will look more impressive to potential employers. They'll have some kind of work experience on their resumes to start, and the fact that they've been able to hold a job while a school attests to their level of maturity, responsibility and time management. Employers look for employees who understand the work environment and work well as part of a team. Having a part-time job shows that the student is at least somewhat accustomed to the professional world, which will make the transition that much easier.

Students taking on a job on top of their studies will have less free time than non-working students. When working students have to measure out their time, they tend to be better planners as they make sure they complete every task expected of them on deadline. They learn to weigh their priorities, sometimes skipping fun activities to finish their responsibilities. This prepares them for life after school when excuses and tardy work will be frowned upon. As Ck Tan Chun Kiat mentioned in his comment, after he start doing his part-time job ‘’ I know when to do my assignment, when to study and so on, because I know I have no much time to procrastinate.‘’ he said. He got to learn how to manage his time and work everything out.

By doing a part-time job students can earn some extra pocket money, and with that, I agree entirely with Ck Chun Kiat, he said ‘’ why don’t we just use a little bit of time to earn some pocket money and reduce parent’s burden.’’ Sounds small, but it means a lot. And I can speak from my experiences, it really helps a lot.
To conclude, I do believe that students who work during their college careers may have better time-management skills than their counterparts.

So go for it, you have plenty of time, if you are worry about your classes, and you don’t know how to manage them with your work, you have semester breaks, take advantage of them. Go and EXPERIENCE how it feels like to EARN your own MONEY! :]

For me personally, part time jobs is acceptable for undergraduates but only to some extent.
Part time jobs requires a lot of commitment and also discipline. If a student is able to manage his or her time correctly, it is actually commendable to take part time jobs as not many people can manage jobs and studies easily. If students are spending hours each week working on part time jobs, homework and assignments tend to be done badly if not at all.
Certain people can multitask easily, some can only focus on one thing. If you are the type that can’t multitask, part time jobs might not be suitable for you, as your focus should be on studying. Even then, employers tend to put pressure on their workers, thus affecting students’ performance in class.
Most part time jobs that is suitable for students tend to have low-skill level and does not teach them much as compared to college classes. If students really need money to fund their tuition fees, it is not problem at all, but to some that do part time jobs just to get money to fund their social life, then that will badly affect their studies.
College life itself is a very important aspect in growing up. We go to college not just to study, but also to make new friends, play sports, being active in college activities. When students take part time jobs, they would miss all these opportunities even if their homework and assignments is not affected. Undergraduates need time to grow up and become well rounded individuals, rather than being shoved as soon as possible into the world of work.

In my opinion, I totally agree that undergraduates should have a part time job. I am saying this because as they step into adulthood, earning an income will boost their level of confidence. As they are earning they may appreciate it because they have put all their effort to earn it even it is a small amount it does not matter. Part time allows the undergraduates to gain some experience work and polish their skills. This makes them to gain important experience in the business, begin networking in any field and explore the field. Eventually the undergraduates will be connected globally even he or she is just minor part in a job. Even when undergraduates attend the any interviews that related to their fields the first question the management ask for is EXPERIENCE. This is to test their capability to work with others. By having a part-time job shows that the undergraduates is at least accustomed to the professional world, which will make their life easier. Other than that, when undergraduates earns money they will be getting lessons on spending wisely. They may be less likely spending their hard-earned money for unnecessary things instead they can use it as pocket money or buy necessities such as books and paying rent which lighten parents burden .Not only that, part time job teaches how to manage time. The undergraduates able to weigh their priorities by able to complete their task at given time. It can help them to handle multi-tasking without any stress. In a nutshell, I strongly agree that undergraduates should hold a part time job to establish their future.

As an undergraduate student I do agree with having a part time job during the semester breaks. I believe that apart from getting the extra money ,students get the chance to face so many new phases in their lives. They might see and experience things that are somehow beyond their imaginations! I strongly agree what Dr Zue when she mentioned that “studying is definitely tough and challenging - but working and earning some money on your own without that scroll is nothing easy!!!”. This is exactly what I faced when I was working part time in a nail saloon during my semester break two years ago. I was looking for a job for a long time . I knew my parents are not really happy with my decision but I somehow managed to convinced them that I need to experience new things and also this is really good for my resume. I was planning to work as a waitress in a restaurant in KL. I went for an interview with the manager and everything seemed good until a friend of mine who also worked there called me and said I got rejected. I was extremely sad and disappointed but I guess my parents were so happy about it and they asked me to go back home as fast as possible. This was the first time I experienced rejection in a serious situation and I totally did not like the feeling .
But I managed to find another job in a nail salon and it seemed more convincing to my parents because I was going to work in a safer place compared to a restaurant.
I worked at that salon for 2 months. I was earning enough money so I could afford my transportation and also food. II met hundreds of people during that period . I met so many inspiring women who helped me to see the world differently , this is actually what I loved about the job , I could communicate with grown up people who already have a job and experiences , especially women. I found most of them so powerful and amazing.
The most interesting thing that happened to me was when one of our costumers who was a make-up artist asked me to become her model for her upcoming year book. That experience also led me to see a whole new world. I never thought of modelling before that, anyway I found that job very exhausting and tiring at the end.
At the end after two months of working I finally got tired and quit without letting my manager to know it, which made me regret what I did. I learned that this is not how I should act at a work place.
For me as a 20 year old undergraduate engineering student who never worked before, it was an extremely wonderful experience. I found myself more vulnerable, more confident, more social and more active after the semester break ended. Although it was so tiring to work for 10 hours 6 days per week but I cherish my time at the nail salon and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to learn from whatever I experienced there.

My suggestion to all the students, even high school students is that to get a part time job in their free time and let them to get involved with the world out there and see what grown-ups excluding our parents do for living. But of course we as students have to consider our situations and make sure that the part time job is not affecting our studies in case of taking the job during the semester.

Salam,
I’m have not pretty much to say but for me it is depends on our own. If we have desire to do part time jobs and also have the potential to manage our study as well then do it. But if not, just focus on one thing. For example, me, myself, I am the one who focus on education more than others. Like education comes first then work later. But if it necessary for me to do part job, I pleasure to do it. Not rigid to one path. I once was doing my part time job after spm. Be an ustazah and teaching “fardhu ain” to kids and teens was fun and valuable.

So, what important is enjoy your life and enjoy your things doing.

I agree that students have to find some part time jobs during their long sembreaks but not during sem because I dont think they have enough to care about so many things. Students will have lots of assignments and projects need to be done. They dont have extra energy to do part time jobs. For long semester break,I agree to have some part time jobs because at least they can get some new experience and get along with others so that they can train their communication skills. They will know how stress their parents have to earn money for them.I had my part tmr jobs during semester break and everything goes well because I met many new friends there. You can try and if you are tired, it proves that you are growing up. :)

University student in my opinion should not be doing part-time work . This is because their parents sent them to college to learn and concentrate on their learning. Thus , even part-time work can help ease the burden of parents to pay tuition fees , but it will make a student is not paying enough attention to learning. Students will face a problem of sleep deprivation and cause a decline in their performance . In addition , students should remember that they are the hope of the family . Therefore , they should focus more on learning as a student to repay their parents later

This world is subjective. The question is "Would part-time jobs do any good for undergraduates?" Depends on the job itself I say. Experiences? I'm a man of money. I've tried it all. I'm once an insurance agent for about 6-7 months. Been a cashier so many times already. Freelance, Elance, all that worked for me, for quite a bit.

But, now I consider myself unemployed. Why? Because I've realized that no matter how much Part-Time jobs I've taken, it doesn't even matter if I didn't enjoy it. The money of course, is the only good part of it.

Ask yourself? Right now, who do you really want to be and why you're here. I want to be a software engineer. That is what I really want to be. What about right now I commit fully to my field so that I don't end up study hard only because of our stupid education system. By the end of the day. Everything I've learned would be such a waste.

So my answer is dependent to the undergraduates itself.

If
They know why they're here, enjoy and fully understand what they've been learning from the start.
Then
NO. Because then you'll realize that our education system doesn't give you that much and you'll hunger for more and more information. Even if you found a way to put up what you've learn(build apps, website, photography, editing etc.) I'm sure that is not called jobs, it's called a CAREER. A job is given to you,a career is made by you.
Else If
They don't know why they're are here. They didn't really enjoy or fully understand what they're really doing.
Then
Yes. Maybe it's not time yet for you to understand or you're just made to be something else. You can apply for a job, but you can’t apply for a career

Part time jobs for undergraduates in my opinion is certainly beneficial for our experience in future. one of the reason is because as we grow up we tend to explore the outer world. We gets to learn how to communicate with the public and as well as adapting ourselves towards the working environment. other than that, day by day our expenses as students is increasing due to the growth of astonishing IT gadgets. we cant be depending on our parents for our prepaid top up and on our other own expenses. when i worked in Maxis customer service, it helped me in communication skills as I had spoke to many kind of people. I also could support myself and saving some money for future use. After full filling 6 months of my service customer care, Im still excited to continue my work there. Part time job is indeed a pleasant experience for teenagers.

Part-jobs for undergraduates? If you ask me, I would say that undergraduates shouldn't go for part time jobs. Well, in my opinion, it's true that part time jobs can give undergraduates some experiences but we as an undergraduate, should fully enjoy our life. Once the time passed, it never turn back, once you miss it, you will never have a chance to get it already. People should actually try to enjoy their life. There's always something you have to do at that exact moment, at that exact time. Just for example, we can go for sport activities during that age of time because when you get older, you will start to realise you will become inactive in sport and in result, you end up getting obesity or getting lazy to actually get a healthy lifestyle. By the way, when you get older, it's normal for people to actually stop doing sports because you are too busy in your jobs.

Besides, I personally think that intern ship can actually help us to gain our experience. When you are doing part-time jobs, it's true that you have gained experience more than others do, but you will never know in future will it be useful or not, but, intern ship does. Intern ship helps you to actually get the real experience of doing your jobs in the future.

On top of that, part-time jobs will make you fatigue and make you unable to concentrate in class and in result you end up getting bad results in your exam. It's that really what you want? You can actually say that part-time jobs can help to release your parents' burden but it also increases your burden at the same time. Not everyone is talented, not everyone is good in managing their time well. So when you end up getting a bad result, instead of making your burden increases, you also make your parents feel worry about you and your future.

In conclusion, I am strongly disagree that undergraduates should go for part-time jobs. We are all humans, lets focus on our first step before moving to the next steps.

Nobody likes to be in a rough situation but they have to be in one at least once in a lifetime. Hence, let us take the viewpoint of undergraduates taking odd jobs as a tough situation since one has to labour physically or mentally to receive a dismal monetary reward while having to study - a double identity which could prove to be cumbersome sometimes especially when both of the worlds clash in time. Still, I, for one, stands for odd jobs being a good option that undergraduates can think of.

When an undergraduate decides to take up odd job, there has to be reasons and those reasons can be financially motivated or just simply for self-improvement. Financial reasons can be that the student does not want to burden his/her parents as it could be that their parents have forked up a fortune for their tertiary studies with or without loan. He/She yearns the financial independence and does not want to rely on their parents more especially on their own personal expenses since being a young adult is already enough for one to find ways to be self-sufficient. But then, in certain countries, it is a reality that one does not even have to pay for their educational expenses (Nordic countries) still this paradigm still applies as they could be people who really want to not be seen as a young bird waiting for their parents to bring food but instead take the baby steps towards feeding their own since they have developed their own wings and learned to fly.

On the other hand, we have the self-improvement motivations. It is a common ground for people to actually say that young people are ambitious - whatever they are thinking, they put it in a large scale perhaps a little bit beyond their own current abilities but that's what being ambitious is about. The good thing about being ambitious is that some young people (undergraduates in this context) actually move to realise what they have in mind and with these odd jobs; relevant or not relevant to their current course, will actually help them in life. For example, being a telemarketer, one learns how to speak over the phone and sell thier products, being a retail worker allows one to subconciously study reactions of people in hire purchase negotiations. These abilites from my examples do help them later on as the minimum criteria to have a job is to be able to sell yourself as a potential asset to the company or organisation that is hiring.

These reasons correspond to my stance which is odd jobs is appropriate to undergraduates since it have the possilbility to promote financial independence and increasing their own range of skills at a very young phase of their adulthood. And of course, I believe that this could work if and only if these students were to understand the limits of being a worker and a student at the same time where one has to maintain his/her grades and perform in their workplace as a worker.

It is true that working part time jobs can be beneficial for a student but in my opinion it brings more harm than good. An undergraduate’s main priority should be in his/her studies, working part time will distract them and render them unable to focus on their education.

I'm sure that the majority of people think that if we can balance our time well between working and studying we can get the best of both world. However, reality is different. We will often be exhausted after working and more often than not choose to rest and leave aside doing our revision and assignments. If you have a job, you automatically have less time to do the rest. In the long run, this will be reflected on our grades.

By investing all of our time in our education, we can ensure a brighter future. In today’s society, that “scroll” is extremely important if you want to acquire a decent position in a company. If by any chance we happen to get bad results because of working part time, I'm certain that we will regret it greatly.

With the implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) starting on the 1st of April in Malaysia, I'm positive that many students are considering doing part time jobs to lessen their parents’ financial burden and earn some pocket money. Nonetheless, always remember our priorities as a student and think twice before you make your decision my friends as working part time while studying is a double edged sword.

In my opinion, I do agree to an extent that part-time jobs will benefit undergraduates. As most of us know, there is a lot to gain when we commit ourselves into doing something new, something we have not yet experience, what more when it comes to taking a part-time job. I have no doubt that there is only little downside to it. Having said that, I believe part-time jobs are only suited to those who believe that they can give a 100% commitment towards it. I myself have never had one but from the stories I heard from relatives and friends, those who took part-time jobs tend to lose interest in the job over a certain period of time. Fatigue and tired are usually the reason for that. Inconsistent attendance to the workplace would somewhat temper with the whole experience one could gain from his or her post. In other words, he or she would not be able to fully experience what he or she could and should have. In conclusion, part-time job is undoubtedly a good thing for undergraduates to commit to but only to those who are willing to give the commitment.

Part Time Job For Undergraduates

I would choose yes for students to take part time job. There are many factors to support my word. First is less the burden to our parents. Not all students come to university is from rich family background. Therefore by taking a part time job will help the students to pay the payment fees . Besides that , taking a part time job will not effect your grades. Why do I say so ? Because before this i work as a part timer worker at Cafe Restraunt and it is not effect my gradefs after all. Although it seems difficult at the begining , but when you face it daily it will be easier for you . Moreover , taking a part time job will discipline yourself after all. It is because you will learn how works place situation and you need to be on time when you work with someone.
Lastly , taking a part time job will teach you about who you are and what you are. My mom always said to me , "Learn to be hard person at first , but went you success dont forget that you became sucess from bellow and from the experience that you face today".

In conclusion , taking a part time job is not bad after all . If you know how to handle your time , it is not possible for you to mantain your grades and after all. Besides many benefit you can get when you take a part time job and maybe so you can implement it in when you graduates and works to any working place. :)

In my opinion ,doing part time during study is not encouraged. Before this I got an experience doing part time at canteen. I'm leaving at 7.00 am ever morning until 2.30 pm. This job taught me how to handle responsibility. Good self is use management involves being punctual , getting work done on time , and being willing to improve your own performance.

I have to face the pupils which has many character to buy something they want. I need to be patient so my customer feel warm with me.

I really enjoy while doing my part time jobs . So what I can say here, I have many experience such as how to manager times and also taught me to be sincere when doing something.

I do agree that part-time job is needed for undergraduates. While the argument that university years are for studying is a valid one, it is not the whole idea. For myself, there are a lot of motives for taking on part-time work. With university fees and immense living costs, life as a student is expensive so the income by working a part-time job can be used to pay for the living costs not covered by loan.

Not to forget, some people do argue that part-time work can have a negative impact on studies. However, I’ve found that by being organised you can actually manage both. Most employers ask for experience alongside a degree, and working while at university puts one in a much better position when it comes to finding a graduate job.

What’s the point of studying a subject just in theory? After all, will you not be putting theory into practice after university job? Part-time job is a great way for students to develop practical skills. Also, why else do people go to university? Personally, I went to university to improve my chance of getting a job.

As a student, it is good to do some part time job because you can earn some your own pocket money. Basically, it depends on you how to manage your time to divide it for study, work and other activity. Every student can do it if you really want to gain some money and maybe to light up your parents burden as they already paid for your tuition fee.

I also have been in some part time job before. Being as a technician at computer shop, being as sports promoter at sport shop and part time job which is I am still doing it until today is as a crew in some restaurant which serves western food. I feel so happy and got new friends which come from the entire state. As conclusion, I think it is okay to do part time job and I really support student to do some. It is also gives more advantage and the student will gain an priceless experience which maybe can be use in the future.

If you really want to do something, you'll find a way.

Yes, I do agree with the statement saying that undergraduates should do part time jobs. This is because part time jobs enable undergraduate to gain experience for their future career. Even the jobs is not relevant with their study scope but they will exposure to the outside world. Besides that, part time jobs will teach them to be more responsible and have a good attitudes. Meanwhile when working they will mingle up or interact with many types of people. They also will go through some hard time where they will learn how to solve problems. Other than that through part time jobs they will learn soft skills and will be more independent.

Hi there....

Well, getting a part time job while being an undergraduate has it's pros and cons.

If the student is a very active student that spends his/her free time playing outdoor games or having extra activities, then there is no need to take up part time jobs. It might be too exhausting for them. Some finds part time jobs stress up students and divert them from concentrating in studies.

But the number of students spending their time wisely nowadays, could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Undergraduates now, spend much of their time doing things that bring no benefits. Such as sleeping the whole day (after class), loafing, burning the midnight oil at pubs and clubs, and etc.

Then wasting their precious time in doing useless things, undergraduates should take up a pert time job. Having part time job could be very beneficial. Through part time jobs, a undergraduate could learn to widen their social network. It's a perfect way to meet new people that could actually help them later in life.

Besides that, having a part time job also can give undergraduates to have more experience in work life. Peoples they meet, situations they were put in to solve and much more teaches them how to react and solve it smoothly. Which is a good learning experience. Makes undergraduates more prepared. Well, we do have one life. Use it wisely and to the fullest.

“Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already?”

Part time job. True, most undergraduate students are indeed motivated by the amount of pocket money that could be gained. Let's be realistic, money is the number one desire for human. Hey, nothing wrong with that. Getting paid for a part time job barely scratch the surface for what it is worth. Workplace experience, communications and other good stuff are the underlying benefits for an undergraduate students who do part time jobs.

Yes, some may argue about part time job being more harm than good. Problems stated are lack of focus and strength during classes, distraction from studies, etc. Understandable. Probably all this problem are faced by people who are married and having kids to take care at home. Imagine that! So, when you put it in comparison: work and family; part time job and studies. Ain't much difference to me. It is the cycle of life, sooner of later we will have various other responsibilities outside of work.

Massive respect for those student leaders out there. They are the example of what one can achieve through discipline throughout life. It is not easy juggle between club work and studies. So, why not just be active in club and societies? True that. Yet, I believe there are some aspects that could only be gained in part time job.

Not everyone can be doing what you studied. I suggest take on the challenge heads on, and you will be surprised at what you can see. I worked as a salesperson in a hardware store, a waiter, a promoter for various telcos, laptops and other IT stuffs in PC Fairs. If you think that being a president of a club is good enough, think again. If you are good, there are people who are great.

As an undergraduate student, it is advisable to be involved in various activities not limited to those related to your field of studies. Be active in clubs and societies, do part time job once in awhile and also be a part of research work in the university. We need first class minded graduates with high employ rate, also get high salary jobs with a bright career path.

We created money but we need money the most.

There is always have good side and bad side when undergraduate take a part time job. For rich people they will says that, "Nahhh, not really necessary" but for the poor people, they need money the most to survive in their life. For student, they need more money because of course to pay the study fees and then they need money to survive in their University life.Furthermore, with part time job will make student more independent and of course gain more experience. What make its look not good for student to take part time job is some people when their take the part time job they will feel sleepy and lose concentration in class because not enough sleep time. But ya, nothing easy in this life. Our life is full of obstacle.

Contrary to popular opinion, I disagree that undergraduate students should engage in part-time jobs. Many students would like to engage in part-time jobs in their free time, but I think it’s a wrong choice to spend our free time by working. I believe we student should really develop our knowledge for the field of studies we are pursuing. Having more knowledge would really be beneficial for student during projects and other uptakes, as we would not have to limit our ideas with just the knowledge obtained in the class room.

Besides, we have to be realistic, finding a part-time job related to our professional field of studies is like finding a needle in a haystack. Students would probably end up in a job that has no skill required, just manual labor jobs with minimum wage salary which would not really glamorize their resume. They would just end up wasting their energy in their jobs rather than using their energy in for their studies and would totally disturb their routine as students.

Students should just be students. They should enjoy their time as students rather than fast forwarding their work life. Students should explore other options to develop their skills in learning work ethics. Even being in clubs and society, students can develop leadership skills and understanding work ethic by working in groups. It may not be a very good working experience but student can get the idea of group work. Besides, why do we have internship for? It’s to expose the student to the working environment of their respective industries.

I would really encourage students to manage their finance well, because managing finance as a student can be really tough. We should cut out our expenses as much as possible. This practice would really benefit us later too, in our life later as a professional. I don’t think we could handle more than one jobs just to support our lavish lifestyle.

The only way part-time job for students can be justified is when students have a critical financial situation with no other options left. But I would really encourage exploring other options first before taking a part-time job.

I would choose no to do part time job during study. Ive done part time jobs during my semester break and after spm. For me, it is kind of tiring to study and work at the same time. You have to really divide your time wisely to make sure that you can catch up your studies and do the all the assignments. It is quite hard to focus in your class when you're tired. In fact, it is kind of hard to find a job that can tolerate with your study schedule.

As for my opinion, I think it's not okay for undergraduates to do part time job. This is because our schedules are too pack for studies. We have assignments, presentation, class work, and all. It must be done within a semester. But if we do the part timr job at the same, it will be much harder for us to manage our time. And I'm aftaid that we can't score for our tests, midterm and quizzes. Then, since we have sports, club and society here in university, I thought it will be much helpful for us in the future, so that we could be much responsible, much active, and we could apply out leadership skills here. If you thought part time job could give us skills, I think it's not really, but part time job really gives us salary. As a student, I think our responsibility is to study and make our parents proud, and get a good job when we graduate.

Hello Dr.Zue,
I am disagree with the statement. This is because students may have problem in transportation. Some students don’t have own transport. So they have to use public transport. They will wake early and may sleep late because of using public transport. Furthermore, they don’t have time to finish their assignments and to study for exam. This is because they are busy with their work. So their result will be worst. Lastly, they may undergo stress as there will be a lot of assignments to be done and have to study for exams. So I disagree with that statement. Actually it is not necessary for undergraduate to work because if they concentrate in their studies and getting good result, then they can get scholarship easily. They have the requirements to apply for a scholarship. So they no need to worry about the money.
Thank you.

Many students, especially those in high school, are wondering whether they should get part-time jobs. There are many downsides to having a part-time job in high school, as well as some advantages. Many people claim that the main task and focus of students in high school is studying hard so that after graduation they can get a degree that offers them a better opportunity for well-paid jobs. Nevertheless, I believe there are great advantages to having a part-time job that outweigh the disadvantages.

Me, myself also have been doing some part time jobs while doing my internship since 2013. About 2 years ago as freelance graphic designer.Freelance graphic designer is mainly responsible for the work of designing the letterheads, logos, logotypes, brochure, flyers, mock-up posters and etc. I've to be cognizant with the ongoing trends and work styles of the graphic designing field.I'm also have to find out innovative and creative designing ideas and present them in an effective way to the customers. Also required to explain the benefits of the designing ideas and make sure that they approve the designing ideas offered by me. Designing is my passion. Alhamdulilah so far, i've no 'BIG PROBLEM' to whom i'm gonna deal with.

Other than learning skills that people will practice all their lives, having a part-time job also teaches a person how to communicate and interact with others. When at a new job, it is common to have to deal with people and situations with which they are not familiar. The best way for a person to grow mentally is for them to be out of their comfort zones. When people are out of their comfort zones, that’s when they learn the most.

To conclude, I think having a part-time job is extremely good for a high school student in various aspects.

So, what are we waiting for? be prepared and grab the opportunity when it comes! :)

My first part time job was right after SPM, where I joined a school for refugees as a teacher. I was tasked in tutoring children aged 9 and below. Before officially being put as a class teacher, I was put as an assistant to one of the existing teacher to learn and experience the class syllabus and methods. After a month, I was entrusted with a full fledged classroom of 23 students. It become one of my best experience and I took a liking in that field and would return to it some day. Currently, my part time job is in my university. I work with student services department. No idea why my jobs so far has always had me in relation to students. Maybe it is my call after all.

Should students get jobs during college?
Depending on the college student, Friday night can be dedicated to partying or to a part-time job. Saturday can be for sleeping in or for setting off to an eight-hour shift.
Whether to get a job in college is one of the toughest decisions a full-time student has to make, and it’s a decision many parents have mixed feelings about. There are definitely benefits beyond the modest paychecks, but for some students, holding down a job can also lead to stress and lower grades. For parents and students alike, it’s a good idea to think about the pros and cons of working part time while also considering the many job options beyond barista and bartender.Beyond just getting a paycheck to help contribute to living expenses or tuition, students can gain valuable experience through a part-time job. Despite the short- and long-term benefits of working during college, it’s definitely a choice that requires time and commitment. And some parents, especially those helping pay for their children to get an education, are understandably concerned that a job might detract from study time. Time spent working isn’t just time that could be spent studying or partying. It’s also time that could be spent enjoying college experiences like football games, participating in student activities, learning professional skills, volunteering, or networking with peers and professors.

Part time jobs –is best for gaining experiences life at work .There advantages and disadvantage in part time jobs.
The advantages are the student able to obtain valuable work experiences, which are excellent for a resume. They also learn how to effectively manage finances. Even if they simply using their earnings to pay for their own expenses, they will learn to budget between clothes, movies, and car expenses.
The disadvantages are they have less time for homework. Working students may not have or make the time to complete their work. Increased stress between work and university life. Balancing work and university can prove to be too much for any student.

My conclusion is it depend on the individual but my opinion is best to study and active on curriculum activities first.

I totally agree on whoever, moreover for an undergraduate student to practice part-time job in his or her lifestyle. Personally, it is so much essential for oneself! Even though one might argue on the fact that most of the times, part-time jobs refers to being a waitress and doing other insignificant jobs which is not most of undergraduates are looking forward to become after graduate, well for that fact, it's more about gaining knowledge, gaining experiences, and definitely a greater opportunity to learn skills. For an instance, as a programmer, all he is good in is in programming. If the same programmer ever had an experience working at a restaurant, like had been mentioned in the post above, now he is more probably a good programmer plus maybe an average cook. Isn't that a plus point?!

Wouldn't have much time for studies? no, not really. Most of the times, doing a part-time job makes you a good timekeeper and somehow it makes you a much more responsible and an independent person.

Cutting off further written blabbering, consider yourself as a manager or COE of a company, it's time to hire a new employee. First candidate is just perfect and fit well to all requirements. On the other hand, a second candidate, except for he is not much handsome compared to the first candidate(considering both of'em are males), the second candidate got a lot of part-time-job working experience. Just think about who would you choose to hire now!

Assalamualaikum and hye Dr.Zue,

Honestly I never have any experience doing part time job. For me anything that we do will have a pros and cons. But, i think undergraduates should'nt do a part time job.

This is because it is the lack of time for focus on studies. There is a high possibility that students will have trouble finding time to study. It is obvious that if you have a job, you automatically have less time to do the rest. Students doing part-time jobs are busy running between the working place and the university .As a result, they get exhausted, and even skip classes to have a sleep after hard work.

Moreover, they may experience stress with a difficult or time-consuming project. Also, it can endanger the health. Although part time job can enhance social experience its still takes up a lot of spare time and the study result has certain influence to oneself.

Excessive money in the hands of youngsters can lead them to bad habits. Earning one's pocket money may make them so over-confident that they would rather drop their education, since they are already earning more than they knew they could.

Thank you.

Good day to the all blogger and Dr. Zue....
I think it’s better for a student not do a part time job. In this age, there are many excellent students who is compete in their study and to get a better job. For me, part time job for undergraduate is not good. It is because students have to divide their time for study and for work. Usually students have a class at morning until evening. At night they have to work. So, when they want to study? If they did not do a part time job, they have some time to study and make an assignment. Some of student like to do a part time job at weekend. We must know that as a student we should relax and rest. Weekend is a suitable day to rest. It will give an effect for our mind and health. Sometime they can’t focus in class because they feel sleepy and tired.
It depends on the student. If they think they can manage it, they can move on. If not, they should think seriously because it will effect their study and future.

Personally saying, part-time job has many priceless experience and contribute to the development of skills that are hardly attained in usual academic classes.

I would like to share my precious experience that has been gained while i worked before as a part-time programmer/junior developer.

When I first entered the workplace, the bosses gave lots of introduction to some of newest technologies, and lots of most of current trending in ICT were briefed to me. Many things, has to be learnt by ourself, not similar in class where most information are being spoonfed. You have to be very independant, and the bosses will just assume nothing is wrong if you do not come to them for explanation. Hence, we cannot assume the bosses will come to us and check on us most of the time because they have many other projects too.

Another thing that I had gained, was how to deal with situations that includes social problems in a workplace. We can't run from this kind of thing. Backbiting, running from responsibility, make offense remark, isolating other workers are among prominent problems that will occur in any workplace. Hence, we must know how to counter all these challenges. I believe that, by having 8 habits of highly effective person like in covey's book are suitable to be implemented in order to be a very strong person and positive in any workplace.

Last but not least, because of these experiences i had gained, i have more motivation to learn better in class. Because i know what to expect in real life working experience, and it makes me feel eager for knowledge more and can't wait to finish all courses in my univeristy as my working tools.

Personally, I have no experience in doing part time job. But, I do believe that undergraduate students should get involved in any jobs that suit them.
Nowadays, students tend to do part time jobs as one of initiatives to have a little extra income. Living in modern era with high level of living cost but lower in income force more than 80% of the Malaysian undergraduate to jump into part time jobs’ world.
Some people stand that doing part time jobs while studying will give negative impacts such as decreasing in result, unable to focus in classes due to sleepiness and so on. However, if you look at the greener side of this issue, we can say that, there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to students with part time jobs.
First, working as a part timer will provide us vital work experience which is a good thing that can be add in our CV. On the other hand, it is also helps us to prepare our mind before entering the real working world which is totally different from the university’s life. With part time jobs, students will be exposed into some transferable important skills such as working in a team and working with the general public which can’t be obtain theoretically in class. The crucial part is, I am strongly agree that experience is the best teacher for our lives.
Next, part time job is actually one of the effective ways to expand our networking in social life. We will meet new people with different attitude and behavior, who will open our minds and train us to think out of the box.
Last but not least, part time job is not all about money. Working is not necessary mean getting paid. Voluntary works are also considered as a jobs. Voluntary is an excellent way of exploring the new world. It is a satisfying to try a different part of lives, get out of our comfort zone while giving our time and energy to improve the quality of others’ lives.

During the times I spent in UNITEN so far, I watched some of my friends getting stressed over finding part-time jobs, mainly to increase their monthly pocket money. It is due to the high living cost in the city and the low monthly allowance from parents/sponsors that they choose to do part-time jobs. Well I see no harm in that. As long as they know how to balance the time between studies and jobs, they are good to go.

It all depends on oneself, to prioritize on what is important first, and take responsibility of their choices and actions. If you want to do a part-time job, then go ahead but remember to make time for your books and assignments as well. On the other hand, if you are not someone who would go for part-time job hunting (like me), get involved in other stuffs that will gain you experience as much as those doing part-time jobs.

In my perspective, jobs/part-time jobs are generally beneficial. However, a person should only do a job in holidays such as summer holiday or a year break after high schools, because our parents is already working and doing efforts to see us flourish and succeed. They would love to see their effort is being paid for with great grades. For me, my father was totally against this and I tried to convince him to work after high school, in order for me learn and depend on myself, and I finally convinced him. One of my best experiences is when I worked in a shop in front of Al haram. The shop sells hijab for ladies, it was a good experience but i had the opportunity to practice english, learn new languages and personalities.

It depends on the person him/herself why they want to do some part time jobs. But most of my friends just want to find some extra money to support their living cost as a student. I found their experiences are amusing and enjoyable because you can meet many people.Guess it can be one of their life time experience before they jump into the work field.

Assalamualaikum and hi. For me, I would like to do some part time jobs because it will help students to improve their skills and enhance their knowledge. By exposing themselves to society, they will learn something outside the class. It is not only about the money, but the knowledge that we can gain outside. Besides that, a part time job might help some students who can not afford to pay for their fees. In addition to that, part time jobs help students to build networks. Student will have many kinds of friends and connections. in my experience, I used to be a kindergarten teacher. That was one of my worst experience ever. It is because my employer is inconsiderate. She is very stern looking and she used to scold a worker there in front of me. And for me, that is not professional as a good employer. But basically, this is the process of learning and I enjoy my life during my part time job. Thank you.

Students should not take part-time jobs because of various reasons. First of all, some students aren't able to cope with the amount of multitasking required in order to balance work and studies. Especially in exam weeks, most of our time should be dedicated to books and assignments. Then, jobs that are related to our field of studies require proper certification and qualifications. Lastly, the primary reason any student would want to even have part-time jobs would have to be financially driven. There are a multitude of options available to us in form of loans, and sponsorships. Therefore, we should grab all opportunities in order to attain them.

I totally agree with with part-time jobs for undergraduates is the best support that will give in the future like their experience’s, hard work, knowledge and many more. Of course you have to spend your time wisely. Be sure that you are confident of your time management and organizational skills in order to make sure you can fulfil your academic potential. Be realistic The temptation of a few extra ringgits in your pocket can make it easy to bite off more than you can chew, and it won’t just be your studies which will be affected. If you don’t allow yourself any downtime you’ll soon burn out, with the avalanche of responsibilities that comes with attending classes, completing assignments and sacrificing your social life to work quickly draining your energy and enthusiasm. So before you take action please think first before you do. You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them.

Having part time jobs can also clash the person time table. So the person can also learn how to manage time and make a own timetable. I agree with part time job for undergraduate students. The main reason is part time job can improve students’ employability. Students should find some part time jobs that are relevant to their courses or interests. Part time job is a good way for the undergraduate students to gain important introductory experience in the workplace and begin networking with those in that field. Well performed students in their part time jobs can help them in secure their jobs after graduated. Organizational and multi-tasking skills will be developed when the students are taking part time jobs. Working will force a student to master his/her time management. No worry for lack of time in study as part time job is very flexible. Students will learn to weigh their priorities, sometimes skipping social activities to fulfill their responsibilities. This prepares them for life after university when excuses and tardy work will be frowned upon. In conclusion, part time jobs are good for undergraduate students as it help student to enhance their employability, with condition not giving up their studies.

so undergraduates should find a part time job that is related to the their current field. Maybe if they perform well the company may keep an eye on you and we might get a job in pervious company straight after we finish our degree.

lets me explain how important part time jobs.
You will learn the importance of money management. When you start earning your own money, you will gain a better understanding of how to handle it. Working hard for your money will help you appreciate important personal finance lessons such as the benefits of budgeting and the importance of saving and being frugal.

While there are many benefits of having a part-time job in university, not all students are capable of handling it during the study. If your grades begin to suffer or you aren't getting enough sleep, you should cut back on your work hours (maximum of 10-15 hours per week) or only work during the summer.
You will discover how to manage your time more efficiently. With the decrease in free time that comes along with a part-time job, you will inevitably improve your time management skills. You will learn how to use your time more effectively, such as completing reading assignments during your bus ride home. You will also learn the importance of becoming more organized and using a daily planner or an app on your smartphone to schedule your study time, extracurricular activities, work hours.

A part time job should be genuinely encouraged for all undergraduate students. There are tons of reasons to get a part time job. Keeping aside the fact of gaining additional fund, we can get loads of experience. Based on personal experience working in a telecommunication company, I've met and interact with various kinds of people that I could never had done by just attending classes. It helped me a lot in taking my communication skills up a notch. It also gives a satisfaction when you realize that you’re paying or buying something with a product of your own effort. It’s a feel that can never be explained by people who only rely on pocket money from parents. However, it is crucial to have an exceptional time management because focusing too much on job could lead to a catastrophic result on our education. It is important to ensure being successful in both job and studies because it’s all about the balance.

As soon as I finished my diploma studies, I decided to look for a part time job to build up some savings for myself for future and emergency uses. After trying out various options, I was approached by my previous school teacher. I was asked if I would be willing to assist him in running his tuition centre. I saw this as a good opportunity to gain some new experiences and at the same time strengthen my communication skills as I would be dealing with students. I was asked to teach Maths and Science and I was more than happy to accept the offer. Once I started my job, I realised that being a teacher/lecturer is not an easy job at all. It takes lots of patience and there should be willingness to share our knowledge and give our assistance whenever needed. Throughout my stint as a tuition teacher I met various kind of students and I gained a lot of knowledge on how to handle situations. To sum it up, it was a really good experience and I also managed to save some money which helped me to pay a portion of my semester fees for my degree studies here in UNITEN.
I am looking forward to find a different part time job for my next semester break.

Thank you.

Assalamualaikum Dr Zue.
For me, part time job is a good way for students. students can find their own way to earn money themselves rather than waiting for their parents to bank-in money to their accounts. taking part time jobs also improve their working experience and may made them easier to get job after they graduate.

But, for undergraduates students who is still in learning progress, I thinks it is not a suitable time fir them to take part time job. with tight schedule in their timetable. it is hardly impossible for them to find a good time to take a part time job.

students also need to focus more in their studies rather than thinking about making extra pocket money. besides, if they studies well enough they have a high chance to get a scholarship which will support them in the tuition fees which make it that they dont have to pay anything in their studies. scholarship also give them extra pocket money.

so i cant see why students should take part time job eventhough they might earn a few experience.

Thank you. :)

I'm totally agree with your point in this topic,Dr.Zue. it is a lot of benefit when we do part time job. Firstly, networking opportunities. Working a part-time job allows you to develop connections. You may get a great friend, reference, connection or even full-time job after school from committing to a sustainable number of hours each week!. Next , employee benefits. Depending on where your part-time job is, you may be eligible for benefits! Even if they’re not full health benefits, you may be eligible for staff discounts or perks. For instance, I had a friend who worked at a coffee shop while in school. She was privy to free caffeine during her entire student career (amazing)! Other benefits could included discounted tickets, food, merchandise and more!

Why students need to do part time job? Are they beneficial or not? The time when people take the “other jobs” is different for different individuals. To me, one of the best moments to try initial careers is student time. Indeed, this is the best period in human’s life to absorb knowledge and learn experience. Ladies and gentlemen, for some reasons, I strongly believe that students should take a part-time job because they can obtain responsibility, independency, experience and contacts. First and foremost is the responsibility. When a student takes a part time job, they have an extra commitment and as a growing adult, they should be able to manage their time and work well. They should be able to be responsible to their own doings because at work if you do mistake, you are the one that going to bare the risks and blame. This could help someone to be more caution and alert and responsible on their own doings.
Next is being independent. This totally depend on either the family’s background or the individual itself. Some from the wealthier background usually won’t be allowed to do part time job and there are also cases where those from wealthier family children do part time job. As a grown up, one should actually bare their expenses and learn how to save money. We can only learn how to save money when we know how hard it is to earn a single penny and that makes us act and think as a grown up. Young people have to deal with many awkward cases that require them to react quickly though sensibly to get the best result. Such environment of work does not allow youngsters to be childish, indeed, they need to grow up in their thought and their action to adapt to the world of adult and business. Students have to feel how it feels to take care of their own expenses. When they have this feel, they will know how hard time that their parents came across to raise them and this also could help to reduce the burden of their parents in funding them for their expenses.
Last but not least, students can also get experience. Students study and earn theoretical experience but yet when they do this part time job that is relevant to their studies, they can actually earn practical experience. When students have experience, this will be very useful for their studies and also when they enter the adult world where they need to find job. They will know how to attend interviews for a job and know what are the tips and tricks to success the interview that they attend. This experience also could make them to stand a level more than their colleagues. They can get a clearer picture of what they are studying and know how things go around and work when they do their practical part time job. Part time job also helps someone to earn some contacts such as a bank staff could be able to get contacts of their customers such as a police officer, lawyer, doctors and many higher professional people. This also could help them to have a stronger and safer background as this people might get handy one day when they are in an in need situation.
To sum up, I can say that by doing this part time job, students would be able to rehearse and prepare themselves to face the adulthood life. I hope students bravely attempt and take up this challenge and succeed in it. “Every young man should have a hobby and learning how to manage money is the best one”.

Hi Dr.zue. In my opinion, partime jobs for undergraduates are not really important because they have to spend more time in studies compare to earn money. Moreover, part time jobs interrupt their class time table and sleeping time.
Students should have enough sleeping time to concentrate on their studies because their pointer is so important for their future.
I hope students have to think wisely to avoid part time jobs and do well in their studies.

it's too common for us too see that students engaged in part time job for some extra income.this doesn't only apply in Malaysia but everywhere.Who doesn't need an extra income right?Rm500 extra a month will just make our life better than it was.
why I would encourage students to get engaged I'm part time job is not only for the money, but for the experience as well. The experience will help us to build the responsibility in us and this will make us to look at things differently compared to before. This will also help to reduce the burden of our parents to send us pocket money every month.I strongly believe that undergraduate students should be matured enough and should stand on their own to adapt their future life But with one condition that they have to perform well in their academics as well.
Many might label students whom are working part time as money minded, but they'll never know the necessary of the student Until they get into the student's shoes.
I engaged myself into entrepreneurship even before entering my degree course.I understood the importance of financial freedom and time freedom to achieve goals in life.yes, money isn't everything and money can't buy happiness, but with the money you can buy values that gives you happiness.thus,. Strongly encourage students to have some part time job or engage into entrepreneurship to learn the deep meaning of life.

In my personal opinion, I felt that as a undergraduate student, we don't need a job yet because of some reasons. First of all , we don't need additional income when our parents gave money. Students should spend the money wisely and shouldn't be a troublesome to the parents. Next is, the time management of the student will be interrupt and spoil their education. Furthermore it will make the students to feel tired and they couldn't concentrate in the class and they can't involve in other activities. So I think that for now the student don't need to work yet. Maybe when they are nearing for graduate, they can do part time job because as Dr Zue tell to us, one need a working experience in order to groom their CV for applying a job.

Part time job for student is good for them to appreciate each cents that they wasting for in all their life. And I agree with those people who work during their study, not just for experience but its helping a lot to reduce parents financial problem. I do lot of part time job as waiter at the hotel, I’m working at artist department as hotel designer. Such as decorate hotel when they have a function and more. Even my salary is not high, but its okay. I’ve learned to be a responsible man. Its teached me to work hard to be a success people. I don’t mind to get any part time job as long it give “halal” money to me. Not just a poor student should get a part time job, I’m pointing my finger to all student should get a part time job. So that, they will know how difficult life is. Thank you.

As undergraduates’ student, we need money to handle a lot of thing. Some people said that you need extra money by doing a part time job but some people said you must focus on study first and enjoy your life without burden of work. For me, it is simple as long as you can manage your own time and find an appropriate part time job. The good side on doing part time job is that you can definitely make an extra pocket money so that you can lesser your family burden to support your tuition fees plus your pocket money. As a student sometimes you need to spend money for your own satisfaction so why not you find your own money for your own satisfaction? But, you must always give a commitment on your study at the first place. So let’s find a part time job and enjoy our moment of life with our own effort. That would be better.
