Involvement in Campus Activities

Recently, I attended two great events organized by the university students: A Malay theatre: "Selendang Milik Laila"and "Indian Cultural Nite 2008". Frankly, I think the undergraduates have done a fantastic job. It's definitely not an easy task: putting the task force together; coordinating specific duties that require maturity, knowledge and external contact; and ensuring quality product to meet the expectation and satisfaction of the audience.

First, the theatre production - "Selendang Milik Laila". Putting up a live performance requires absolute planning and accurate execution of strategies. Can we imagine a slight blunder backstage? onstage? The actors will get distracted, mood will diminish, and the audience will probably lose their concentration. But the students' production was next to perfect. The actors and actresses played their roles very well. My children like Tok Ketua, and the audience like him too. Tok Chik was another interesting character, typical kampong folk, and a cheeky old man.

The protagonist looked cool on his 60's bike (good prop). Some of the audience and I was just a bit worried about the kampung house or hut..luckily the zink did not slip. Overall, promotion was done early enough (with the banners) which attracted a multi-ethnic crowd. I was there - and it was full house! Isn't that a good indication of success, already?:)Bravo. The technical crew (Rahim & friends) did a fabulous job in supporting the production.A salute to the director and script writer. Finally,I must thank Hadi for his kind invitation. I took my girls with me, and I believe they learned a great deal from the theatre. Here's their photo against the banner. Perhaps, they should turn it into a novel and the sales will go to ASTENA proportionately. Long Live ASTENA.

Next, Pushpa invited me to a UNICS cultural night last weekend. When I told my children about it, they were so excited and couldn't wait for the event. We had all the reasons to be there: 1. Indian cultural dance is our family favourite 2. they promised a non-stop showcase of varieties of Indian dance 3. Navin was the emcee 4. hey, it's free...come on..where can you get anything valuable yet free, these days?

My girls wore their Indian costume, bought in Little India in Penang. It was fun and enjoyable, mesmerizing and captivating. The event was very well organized, guys with walkie-talkie were almost everywhere, even on stage, and there was no hiccups at all. The emcees tried dancing and singing, and that was also pretty entertaining. The most impressive thing about the event is that it was full-house, and the crowd was multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, with students, lecturers, and lots of parents. I was so glad when one of the parents actually won the lucky draw. Of course, the fact that I saw many of my own students and ex-students on stage (Rao's breakdance was fabulous) and behind the succesful production is the next best thing. Thumbs up everybody.

Actually, there are many more events like this on campus and this provides a sturdy platform for our undergraduates to enhance their soft skills and also talent. We don't learn about leadership and team work only in class or through organizing academic and social projects, but also from cultural events like this.

Nevertheless, some may be skeptical and wonder - aren't the undergraduates supposed to concentrate on their studies - revisions, assignments, and projects? Why do they choose to be actively involved in campus activities?? Well, only those who have experienced organizing and participating in campus activities can provide us with the authentic answer.

Finally, lat's have a more balanced life everybody - join the campus activities and make a difference. Varsity days become more colourful with these activities:)

hmmm....
i didnt go for both shows.
i enjoy perfomances, but i really hate the 'setting up' part.
i remember, before in school, when we had to help set up for ceratin events like MPPH(majlis perhargaan dan penyampaian hadiah), everytime had to perfect with no flaws....
coz the discipline teacher was in charge of course.
then, the running here and there, back and forth from the class, to the office, to the hall, to the principal's office!
haaargh! i hated that sincerely...
But, my favourite part was missing class... haha... who doesn like that part?

Anyways, its good to be in this sort of things but you really have to know proper time management. Fact is, in doing this, you would probably miss class/lectures at the same time, miss group discussions and such...
You have to make it all up by studin later on, reading the notes of the discussion that your friends have taken.

Another thing is, organizing such events require energy and most of the ime at the end of the day, you would feel extremely tired. And you have to fight away that laziness so you have to be full of strengh...

And i think i've crapped enough so bye bye!

Hehhehe, im gotta to be honest that i didn't take part in any campus activities here since i enter uniten. Because a certain reason. Maybe all know it.Hahha.Well maybe later on i try to take part.

Once before when i was at MRSM Transkrian, i involved alot of my school activities ( that i take because i already 5 years there;p lol. Football, scout, kelab kembara, prs and much more. 1st time I involved, I can sense the sensational of that activities. That after that, I become addicted to enjoy the whole activities at my school till my friends call me "Giat" (take from Giat Mara as they are very hardworking in any part). So, here maybe next year i take part in campus activities and later on i maybe can organize a campus activities.. Heheh..

When I was at university, we had projects throughout the year. From cultural performance (uni musician, theatre, dance) to oratory activities (debate, forum, pantun competition) to sports and reacreational activities (jungle trekking, mountain climbing, quarter marathon) to social activities (khidmat bakti masyarakat, national varsity counselling, care 4 d orphans) to representing the country in First ASEAN Students' Conference in Jakarta (politics???hmm)...and I always made time for all of them. Why? Because I kow that I need to learn from real-life experience in order to lead a normal and real life.

After all, I went to university to become a teacher and I know that I should start the ball rolling - if I do it right, may be my students will follow suit..now I just pray that all my students and readers of this blog will see the varsity as a huge and dynamic classroom as well...at varsity, compared to school, we learn to organize, anticipate hiccups (plan A, B and C) and train ourlelves to lead. All the Best, everybody:)

hye thr,
I was not able to attend both bcoz had to go back home..... :-(
from my perspective these kinda events actually boosts our life in uniten. Day and night we see books, laptop, assignments, tutorials etc, but the only "healthy" way to break those is thru activities....
If you ask me, the government should stop saying we have to be united n bla..bla... come on, be like Pn.Zue and her wonderful kids, that is what we call as unity!!!
I am really proud of you pn.Zue, your kids are Truly Malaysian!!! thr r a lot of activities around (eg.debate) that broadens your thinking totally. Frankly speaking,I learned a lot in debate, and that makes me a better man...
So lets support any activities done by any society, not only in uniten but anywhere if there is something good, even it doesnt help u directly, but remember you are a MALAYSIAN!!!

hahaha...I love this topic..love it very very very much. ara, a short comment for you. Yes, it is very tiring and make you feel very lazy. BUT I want to ask you what is your intention on doing activities? just for fun? to skip classes =) ? OR to contribute something to the people around you and the university itself. =)

Yes, people come here, the first promary objective is to score high CGPA, get a nice pay jobs and everything gonna be happily ever after. STOP right there my friends.

read this sentence and try to comment about it.
"Dont ask yourself what the university had contributed to you, BUT instead ask yourself what you have contribute to the university?" nice is it?? huhu

It come from a very good person, nice and very friendly. Mr Zainal Madon. I think Pn. Zue know him better.

I share with you the benefits of joining or involving in campus activities.

1. You get to know many and lots of people.you will see many of them with different personality and behavior. The question that Im going to ask you my friends.. how well can you interact with them? Can you mingle yourself between them? etc. At first you will face many obstacles, you will feel very shy, judge people by their faces (haha) and many others. BUT, if you can asnwer some my question there well. you can survive the first test and gain many friends!

1.1 WHAT THE BENEFIT OF GAINING FRIENDS??

teet..I want to asnwer! When a friend in need, is a frined indeed!! (elaborate yourself) tq

2. Soft skills, this one I am very agree with. Your communication skills, your body language, your face impression and etc. In a simple word, A SUBJECT THAT BOOKS CANT TEACH YOU, ONLY YOUR EXPERIENCE. you see how well people talk, try to act like them and made your own trademark to be better. see? Then it helps you a lot for your JOB INTERVIEW in future! BELIEVE ME..been there before.

3. Make the campus happening! Of course you want your university to be known by others right? start it now! Join a small activities first and then try to join the big one. In future, try to organize your own activities too. Its good in your CVs.

Oppss..I did it again..went to long. Sorry, cant help myself. really enjoying myself comment about this topics. Hope to hear from you guys and gals first.

Clubs and society is very important now days. In the job market not only they are looking at achievements and CGPA, but they also looking at the students involvement in clubs and society. But most clubs and society failed to promote their clubs. Most student join a certain clubs because they want to follow their friends. Once they entered the club and did not enjoy it, instead of joining other clubs, they became inactive and less socialize. That’s when they complain to others that university life is bad and hard. Clubs and society is not just a bunch of people meeting at the same place but is a place where we socialize and increase our involment and leadership skills.

hi Qayyum, very interesting observation. I believe it takes two to tango - both the club and the individual must be proactive. Let's hope that readers who see your comment take it seriously.

Study in University is a big deal in the life...alomost all the students study hard to get the higher CGPA...achieve higher results...but nowadays is diff...students should not only achieve a great result iin the academic...but oso active involve in the campus activities...Involvement in campus activities can learn lots of knowledeges that we cant learn it from the text...One of the major tittle of involvement in campus activities is to contribute leadership skills... furthermore, we will oso noe more friends when we active in the activities...we should noe tat friends are playing an important role in the University...By the ways..i think students should involve themselves in the campus activities like playing ball games or swimming...tis is becauz can release the stress during the study...

Doing any activities such a nice thing that we had make. Many activities that we can do including gain our stamina, contribute to other, to realease our tension, etc. Involve in any activities was a great deal for us. We can know each other, change our opinion, idea with other, make friends, etc. Regarding to my opinion, involvement in campus activities must take serious because it can affect many thing in our daily life at university. For example our university,UNITEN. We must collect scorun to past our foundation level. Just like cocuriculum mark. That all from me. To meet again(Pn Zue trademark after finish lecture) :)

let me see..i think, i like this post..bcoz, it pursue us to join the activities in the university. actually, when we contributing ourselves in the activity we will make more friends. i agree with what had nico said. in this varsity days, i did'nt contribute in organizing any activities yet, except being a part of the performance members n followed the tentative n make it flow smoothly. but in school, i had be a part of organizer. such as organized the annual dinner. organized the activities for the juniors. such a wonderful moment i had. when we try being participated in some activities, we also learn how to manage our time. like ara said. hmm, i also agree with qayyum, bcoz i'm the one who is joining some society but not get involve in any activities that the society had contributed. therefore, involvement in campus activities is one of the best way to make friends, manage time n many benefits we will get.
=)

Syimir Izzaffy opinion :

What is the real purpose are we enroll to a university? I started my opinion with a questions so that people will understand about my elaboration later. Living in a campus life is not only about in love with the books and assignments for twenty four seven. Varsity activity is actually also part of our university life level. For me, a university is created not only to produce a good student but also to produce an individual who can work, manage and collaborate with other peoples. So that is the purpose why we should take part in the varsity projects. From there, we will not only know but also experienced about leadership, teamwork, decision making and the value of happiness together with friends. Dont take it as a burden and dont make it just to fulfill your scorun marks, but thinks about the valuable experience and knowledge that we might get.
