What happens to an UnPopular idea?

Imagine this. You are so motivated to speak up, and share your opinion with friends and all. As you prepare to claim the platform, you also realize one possible challenge. Your so-called brilliant idea may not be popular among the audience, that it may not be well-received, inviting some kind of disagreement and opposition, and you may have to bear unforeseen consequences. What would you do?

In a collectivist society like Malaysia, speakers have to play by tonnes of rules, norms, and discretion. To present an unpopular idea takes courage, persuasion, and creativity. Interestingly, some of these unpopular ideas are wisdoms, insights, and breakthroughs. Hence, to back off is absolutely out of the question!

By theory, most individuals will scrutinize the communication and cultural climate before they present their unpopular ideas. Noelle-Neumann's (1974) 'spiral of silence' explicates that people speak out when ideas are popular and become silent when they start to lose ground. Hmm...this explains why some clever ideas end up silenced and invisible.

What about you??? As much as this situation may trigger social-psychological discomfort, if you could muster enough courage, your seemingly unpopular idea can emerge as a groundbreaking claim. In other words, as there is majority vote, research shows that minority influence can also win people's hearts and conscience. Think positive+++.

Now, I invite you to take a moment to reflect and explain your stance on this trigger: In terms of percentage (0%-100%), how likely will you express your own opinion in situations when it is UnPopular?

I have to take a positive turn on my ideas about the topic. Making sure that it is acceptable and the viewers more opened to the topic. Basically, speakers have to break the rules, norms and discretion to make their ideas heard.
It is very risky but it is a fact. No one wants to hear of things that have been accepted by society. Some who are opened minded enough will accept them.
For example, Barack Obama. He as the president of United States legalises abortion. People were shocked at the idea, but the facts and figures of the American population is stated that the probability to do so, is a need. It maybe a norm that abortion is bad. To some religions it is. But illegal pregnancy is also wrong. Bringing a child into this world needs a lot of commitment. The child must know that he is loved and cared for as well as his well being.

This is one thought provoking entry, Pn. Zue. :)

It is normal, in fact expected not to put an unPopular idea into words fearing that one will be laughed off, opposed or even receive dumbfounded stares in reply.

And the ones that do speak up, either have absolute confidence of the facts behind an unpopular idea OR have absolute faith in their ability to convince their audience of the unpopular idea.
Personally, I've always thought thats what makes a successful debator.

I'd probably be one who speaks about unpopular ideas 99% of times.

to make this interesting. we can show the topic with the video aid. maybe we can show the video clip, graf or maybe demonstration infront the people.

lastly, present the topic is that unpopular can challenge us to find the way to make people want to listen what we want to speak and how to make them to get the topic with the leatest information such as the antidot for the HIV maybe.

"What happens to an UnPopular idea?"..For me its not about the idea. Its about the courage to speak the idea at the audience with most creative and the audience can see from the spirit of the speaker. When we speak with confident at audience, the audience will automatic think about the idea which the speaker speak about..

like Pn Zue say 2 our class,"when we are the speaker, people will listen to what we gonna say"..popular or Unpopular idea is the other story.as long as what the speaker want 2 speak and share the idea we should take it serius.who know from the idea we can treasure knowledge or something valuable that we can used in life time..

for me,we must think positive so that what people try 2 share to us can give benefits 2 our self and we can used it to help the other in our own way..

erm..its depends to the idea PN Zue.i think if people that can speak very well in english dont have the problem to be more capable to express their idea...for me maybe its gonna be less then 50%..maybe..

When I have to share my thoughts on unpopular idea,I think it has it's own pro's and con's.Basically, people would think that giving speech on unpopular ideas will bcome their worst speech ever. This is bcause even when the topic is good, but when the audience think that it's quite unpopular, they will not give their full attention to the speaker. Thus, the speaker will be ignored by the audience.

But,it also have it's own advantage. When sharing "unpopular" ideas with the public, speakers can highlighting important facts and wisdoms that public seldom heard bfore this. Thus, lots of new knowledge will be obtained.

In terms of percentage,I think 65% will suit me well (:

The informative speech evaluation is just around the corner.Thinking of the best topic that has been chosen to be informed to the class, lot of things keep knocking the head.'Will it be interesting?'or 'Will the topic be attractive and informative enough?'or 'Will the class agree and accept my opinions and suggestions?'I think those ideas will remain there until the day of the evaluation.
We cannot assume others to accept all the suggestions that we have made. Each of us have our own interest. But it is possible to make them think the same way as we are.We have to be creative enough to tackle them,to be agree with us.Manipulation of thinking can be one of the best way.Do not feel introvert if there is disagreement.Be cool, think carefully. Understand the audience.I am sure they will be with us,maybe not the whole idea that we have brought up but at least part of it.
So,be positive and try our best.
ALL THE BEST!!!!

thats why, even when everyone says i would do it and he is encouraged to do it, no one actually does it in the end.

for a second, he might be all positive about it, like he should do it, but in another second, fear of public opinion, would stop him at his knees. and he would stop.

i've seen it happen many times. no novice could bring in new ideas that are accepted.

According to your article.
In fact if people have more knowledge, they can get the best idea to speak up, and share their opinion. Materials like journal, newspaper, dictionary, encyclopaedia, and many others are the best sources to read.
On top of that, reading lots can make us to produce a brilliant idea. Moreover popular idea also can come from our experience.
On the other hand, if we reading more we can gain more popular idea, creatively, interestingly and awesome.

actually, unpopular idea is the best issue to talk about as peoples can obtain or gain new knowledges..besides tht,we need to touchup lil bit to make our unpopular idea to be intersting like put some music, pictures or mybe videos ..you know wht, when we talk bout this, its like a debate..because we deal with disagreement and agreement..some people can accept it and some people jst said 'NO'.. try to make some research in different sources and combine, manipulate their mind, make our unpopular idea can be acceptable..right?

In terms of percentage mybe 60% on how likely would i express my own opinion when it is unPopular idea..

Hi Pn Zue:)

A very long time ago I participated in a problem solving competition that requires us to think of solutions for a given scenario. I remembered an answer from a member of my team that is explicitly unacceptable and quite disturbing to say the least.

The scenario more or less sounded like this, 'A factory is manufacturing a top secret device to the government, how to prevent the workers/staff from announcing the public' (the scenario sounded something like that, more detailed).

Someone from our team gave us a solution, which is to scoop out all of the staff's eyeballs.

Most of our team members laughed and don't even give a second thought on the gruesome idea, but someone stood and suggested we should manipulate the idea instead,
he suggested that the factory should hire the blind. Which the team simultaneously agreed.

My point is that whenever we are presented with an idea, no matter how insignificant, mad or irrelevant, there is always something that we can extract and transform it into a brilliant idea.

So next time someone presented you with an inappropriate answer, instead of saying 'that's stupid' or 'preposterous' say thing like 'we can use that idea and change it this way'.

A simple gesture can go a long way,
this can encourage people to give ideas and not fear being shunned or humiliated. Which is the main reason (from my humble opinion)we do not speak out our mind.

Expressing unpopular idea among my friends or maybe people that are close to me is a lot easier . I would comfortably speak out no matter how ridiculous my idea will sound . It is such a relief when I speak up . It taught me to be a fast thinker . Because , I have to come out with a short yet intelligent answer when people respond to it . In addition I would also receive a new knowledgable output from other people when they respond . Doesn't matter if it involves disagreement . The case will be different when it comes to new people . My confidence level will automatically drop down when handling with new surrounding . However I will muster every ounce of confidence I have eventho if it is with unfamiliar community .That part of me needs to be modify . hihihh .

I think we should just express our ideas rather then keep it to ourselves. Even though that the idea maybe sounds kind of boring or something that might not attract the attention of other peoples. Maybe people would just ignore or not giving enough attention to what we`re saying, but at least we have the guts to say it out loud. To share it with the peoples around us and to the audiences. It also depends on us. The way we try to convey the ideas should be interesting and catchy. So that the audience would not feel so bored.

For me is 50/50. Even the topic is unpopular, if we have the talented speaker we can attract people in whatever topic that given. Talented speaker know how to deliver their speech in a good way. Even the topic given is unpopular, they can change it into popular topic. They can make it more interesting. The talented speaker know how to attract people with their own way because they have the speciality.

If we always heard the popular topic, sometimes it can make us get bored. Got pro and contra right? if i get unpopular topic, i will try to do some research as possible and looking an interesting point to make sure the listener did not get bored when hear this topic and make the unpopular topic become popular.

To present an unpopular idea, we should have a unique way so that it will be more interesting. What is mean by a unique way? It is something like not so many people thought we would do something like that. We should never ever do a common way of presenting such a using a slide, give piece of paper to introduce the topic to people, showing a videos and such of these thing. Yes, people will more attract to know what is hidden behind these an unpopular idea. Plus, people nowadays seriously have a very high level of curiosity. To those who wanted to express an unpopular idea should be sensitive to people body language. This is because, when people doesn’t have interest in listening an unpopular idea, they will easily get bored or they doing something else like looking at their hand phone, looking at the outside of the window, and else thing. From that we know we have failed in presenting an unpopular idea that we tried to express. When that happened, we should immediately change our strategic and change our style in presenting. Maybe we should do something that might surprise the people. However, we should have courage, confident and the most importantly is we should never give up on trying. “Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

How likely will I speak my mind, even though it is an unpopular idea? I'd say the probability is about 123%. I am the kind of person who would be more than happy to hear or generate brand new ideas that are totally "out of this world". This is due to the fact that im really bored by those typical, traditional and archetypal ideas or rules that we have to blindly follow like a bunch of programmed robots. If I think that i have thought of a brilliant idea, i'll share it! Many revolutionary inventions were invented in the past 500 years - thanks to the courageous scientists and inventors who are not daunted by social pressures at their times. For example, more than 100 years ago, when the Wright brothers told people that they were going to create a machine to make people fly high in the sky, no one believed them, and even laughed at them. Fortunately, they proved that humans can fly, with the aid of aircrafts, and the rest was history. Thus, in a nutshell, we can see that voicing out an unpopular idea might not be a bad thing to do after all.

So,yes madam zue,in terms of percentage here, i would be like 20% in expressing my own opinions in situations when it is unpopular.yap, poor isn't it?i just can't help it because i don't really have that great soft skills eventhough when iam trying to express the new ideas today. As we all can see, worldwide now needs a new, creative, solid and brilliant ideas in order to keep the world's today moving.and with this so-called-unpopular ideas,
it is hard for us to express the ideas when so many people out there won't be listen to this old and outdated idea, won't they? So, in order to let the old idea be expressed to the public, we need to have the most interesting and unique way of expressing the ideas, the ideas that won't be used or simply said won't ever be think by the other people in using it.huhu.This shall attracts many people to hear the ideas that has been voice out to us and somehow people might forget that this is the unpopular and old ideas that have been express a long time ago.We should keep trying and should not step back easily no matter how hard it was going to be.As what has been said by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail".

What would i do? Not showing up during the speech. Worried about the topic because of its unpopular? Make up an interesting story that it relates to the topic. Most of us would not want to write an essay that is either out of date or the topic is so boring because they will know that most people will totally ignore them. But i think we should try to write on these boring topics. We should come up with such ideas that people will love our speech or essay. These boring topics can be tackled like these.
Firstly, we have to think outside the box. Look at your surroundings and look at the topic. Find something that is similar to the topic but it has more feelings than the topic. For example, if u are writing about "Pens". Try find a pen and look at it nicely. When you are looking at it, questions should be floating inside your brains, like, what does it do? who uses it? why do we need it?
Than here comes the interesting part. Some of us are not that creative but still this is not a good excuse in delaying the speech. They should think positive and instill in them positive attitudes that they can make the speech more lively. For example, bring along items that are or may related to the topic and give your own opinion on it.Forget about the people around you. Its just you and the item.
Lastly, as i already mentioned in the introduction, we should TRY and write on the topic. It will not hurt you if you try. No matter what the results may be, lift your head up high because out of all the people that were given the topic you were the only one that tried.
In the end you will found out that you have compiled a dramatic speech. Keep on doing these ideas and you will have no problem in making a public speech.

As myself, I can say that I will 100% try to make people understand my idealism. In today generations, we have to think out of the box but at the same time we still respect the community sensitivity. To be honest, our people always think that unpopular idea is hard to generates but do we think that it is actually will create something different from what we have gone through everyday. For example, when Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan want to come out with a huge communications service project, people may think that he is crazy, but now what happen to his unpopular idea? Simple, because of his unpopular and untrusted idea at the beginning, now Maxis,Hotlink,Astro and AMP radio network is all under his label. So people, dont think that the unpopular idea is cannot be accepted. As for me, I will elaborate my unpopular idea until people understand what and where is the target of my idea. Open your mind, dont be shame to speak or to deliver your idea. Although not everyone will understand the idea, make them understand so that they will believe in you finally.

Dear Pn.Zue,

As a speker we might come up with many different ideas.Sometimes those ideas might be unpopular among the audience.I think I will 100% deliver my idea to them eventhough it could be unpopular. There are many way to manipulate that particular unpopular idea to be more interesting and let people know about it in detail. In that case,it all depend on how we actually deliver the idea to the audience. We should make it more interesting so that audience will lend their ears and listens to the idea.We should add more details, examples and even a bit of joke that could make them to think of the meaning of the idea more deeper.Other than that,we should also use a very nice language to potray our idea so that audience will first listen to our talk. That is how we attract their attention. When they find it comfortable, they will definitely start listening to our speech and accept the idea. Therefore, making an unpopular idea into a popular one is very easy and it just need a little bit of effort. All the ideas are very useful in their own way.We should deliver it to the audience in the correct way.So don't hesitate to bring out all the ideas no matter its popular or not.

Unknown said...

Having an unpopular idea is a nightmare for most speakers as they prepared so well to speak up. What will i do? Lets see. I will try to explain the idea and convince the audience. We should not give up easily after having an unpopular idea. Instead we should think positively and try to make the audience to like our idea. If at the end of the speech, the audience still disagree with our idea. Don't be disappointed with it as long as we did our best to express our idea and speak up on a stage in front of the audience. That will be an achievement to those who had problem speaking up on a stage or expressing their ideas.

Nirosha Xavier said...

We as individuals have different outlooks and ideas on just about anything and everything. Our ideas with a fellow individual may perhaps contradict. I believe this natural occurrence is the reason why some speakers deem that their ideas are unpopular. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an idea signifies the meaning “a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action”. Firstly, ideas could trigger numerous views on vast matters. For example, the so-called “unpopular” ideas could manifest an insight or an inspiration no one has ever thought of. Not quite “unpopular” isn’t it? Secondly, by having the thought that an idea is unpopular, it can halt speakers from delivering an excellent speech. The speaker will begin to use ordinary ideas rather than the contemporary ideas generated by him or her just to be on the safe side. I believe that a speaker should always challenge himself or herself to greater heights, such as speaking his or her mind authentically and disregard the myth that his or her idea is unpopular. As a conclusion, it is of the essence that speakers diminish the thought that their ideas are unpopular as it can deteriorate the art of public speaking.

In today's competitive work environment, every voice counts. As students we need to understand the value of expressing ourself. We need to find opportunities to speak up about important issues in both
formal and informal settings.
Whenever we speak, we should think about what our listeners stand to gain from hearing what we have to say. Do not simply expect people to listen; involve them in our message. Think of ourself as partnering with audience. We should remember that we have something to tell them, and they have an interest in hearing it.We must choose what we want to say. This involves both the thoughts we express and the way we put them together. Our content must be well structured for people to follow our logic and understand our message.
We must formulate our objective.
Before we speak, take time to think about what we want to accomplish. Put together a clear statement of what we want and our audience to understand, think, or do because of your message. This objective statement will help focus our thoughts as we plan and deliver our message. Moreover, capture audience interest is important when we come out with unpopular idea. Our opening remarks should let our listeners know why our message is important to them. Then, pointing to a benefit for them captures attention and reinforces the value of our message.

Making the audience listen

Assalamualaikum Pn.Zue

Honestly I think I'm on the fence when it comes to delivering unpopular ideas. because a part of me will say go for the uncharted territory and win the audience with an unpopular idea and another part of me says that this is just a waste of time and shouldn't be even bothered with.
When it comes to an unpopular ideas, the audience is almost always be biased and wouldn't listen to any form of reason that is not supporting their believes on the matter. the only way to make them listen is to do something to make them at least hear your opinion from a neutral standpoint.
This can be done by using the "shock and awe" tactic. For example, when I was 12 teachers at my school invited a motivator to motivate us to study for the UPSR exam that was coming in a few more month, at first all the students in the hall ignored the motivator and did something else because they were bored. but then the motivator pretended to cry on the stage and managed to get our attention for the rest of the day.
at the end of the day, an unpopular idea just needs a proper presentation for the audience to listen to. but it will need lots of work to make it go smoothly and that is why I'm on the fence when it comes to delivering an unpopular topic.

Hhmm…. It must be suck when we present idea turn out to be unpopular idea . The audience might fall asleep as their getting bored . Maybe … the audience don’t have any clue what the speaker are babbling about …. When that time comes , you start getting nervousness and stumble every word you say. Your mind just keep worry ‘bout audience saying about you . Forget what they say about you . Some of them might listen ‘bout your idea and somehow they struggle comprehend and related to their life. Try add some joke to pull back the attraction of audience , doing that you can kill their boredom. Or , use your funny tone …

Don’t do this in formal occasion cause it doesn’t to suit that event, you might get in trouble!

Hi Pn Sue...Hope you doin great...My opinion about the topic"What happens to unpopular idea" is a positive opinion because most of us would have experience a problem where when we giving a speech in a piblic speaking avenue where we ourself feels unconfident with our ideas by just looking at the audience expression...It is normal,in fact expected not to put an unpopular idea into words fearing that one will be laughed off, opposed or even receive dumbfounded stares in reply...For me its not about the idea...Its about the courage to speak the idea at the audience with most creative and the audience can see from the spirit of the speaker...cheers!

Hi Mrs Zue ,
Speaking about unpopular idea means the idea that doesn't attract others to listen what we speak . Many of us afraid that our ideas will not attract others to listen but 1st thing we must do is always choose a topic that makes others listen to us interestingly . Former India's president , Dr.Abdul Kalam gave few shocking ideas to improve his country but later on the citizens of Tamil Nadu realise his speech and started to achieve the goal that he targeted . We must always trust the topic we speak . Lastly , i will make sure i will choose an interesting topic to talk about and make others feel entertained by the speech i talk .

Assalamualaikum Puan Zue,

I am very agree with you because it is normal when somebody want to talk with the audience. Although,we have all felt our blood boil when someone says something that we consider ignorant, but the question is "what are we supposed to do?". Experience usually tells us that expressing an opposing opinion leads to an argument or strained silence. Should we stay silent about the things that are important to us? Not necessarily we have to explain clearly to our audience because it is very important to understand our point. I have some tips to share with you all about how to express our opinions.

First and foremost you all must think what you are talking. It is a stranger or your friend? It is very important because your word will be written off as the ramblings of someone that we does not know.

Secondly you can say everything is non-confrontational as possible. You have a right to an opinion, not a right to start a fight. it is because the audience will listen with your points properly.

Conclusion you have to remember for any opinion that you have because someone out there has exactly opposite opinion.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or the shortest is IDEA was very important to each person. When we talk about this, every person will scared to give their idea to others. This is because, they do not know even the ideas is better or not.

There are some ways to overcome this situation. Firstly, we need to prove all about the statement that we do. With proving the statement during the presentation, all audience will pay attention and will interested on it. The proving must be true and logical. These way need you to read a lot of an article, books and others. Then, your ideas will be accepted and maybe unpopular ideas will change to great idea.

After that, in my opinion, unpopular idea happened when we not assured about what we will talked at audience and also we does not know the ideas is true or not. Great ideas start with knowledge. Knowledge important to each person before we gave idea at others. For example, if you have no knowledge in psychology, you cannot give talk about that. You must learned first before talk about it.

Last but not least, to share the idea, we must prepare all the material. Make sure, all the point must be fact. Consequence of unpopular idea is we did not learned more about it. We also must listen to what anyone else has to say. Sometimes, they have theirs own opinion. We should listen and we also can learned something new from them. Always remember, we should learn the systematic ways to produce new ideas.

This may only take 50% of my confident to deliberating my own opinion in situations like this, as we must have the courage to express the ideas and should know how to tackle the audience. First, we must have the courage to talk about an unpopular idea. The courage will help us to talk confidently so we can deliver the info of the topic to the audience. Examples, we can only shares our ideas if we being brave to stand up and share, so people can hear us, if we don't have the braveness, we'll just keep our mouth shut.Second, Unpopular idea usually hard to attract the audiences' attention. Therefore, we must try to get the attention by making some jokes or just giving examples that related to our daily life routine. This can catch their attention so they will start lending the eyes and ears to listen to the opinion. We need to believe ourselves that we can do the things we believes. Have faith on ourself everyone~

Having an unpopular idea doesn't have a big matter as long as the speaker have the courage to give a talk about unpopular idea.
Yes!!! I admit that having an unpopular idea might bringing you a very risky speech. The speaker should know how to make the content of the idea more creative and wider from the range. As long as the speaker can catch the audience attention i would be a great job for the speaker. I am very sure it is very hard to gain people attention, but when the speaker can gain the audience that mean they are attract with our speech, that can be consider as a great achievement for the speaker.
In the other hand, for the first time speaker who have to give a speech in front of many people with unpopular idea. The speaker would having problem to talk about the idea. This because they still don't know to make the topic make sense for the audience. But as long as people hear what you are saying is good.
For me, an unpopular idea is good challenge for the speaker to define their skill in giving the speech. With this, the speaker can know their strength in giving talk or speech.

Unpopular idea????
Well,Many people experience anxiety when speaking in front of others, be in a room full of colleagues or an auditorium filled with hundreds of people. But sometimes, our idea will not satisfy audience. During that time, we shouldn't give up easily hence we should be confident with our ideas. Besides that, we should overcome the nervousness and try to explain clearly what we going to present about it...Then,organize your idea properly so that people don't get confused. Also, try to
use body language to reinforce your message to the audience and attract them by doing any skills or movements. However, don't forget to vary your voice to add impact so that the audience can hear you clearly. Finally, make sure
speak with correct English pronunciation to prove to them as a good speaker even though we have tried our best to speak it up...

But, we also need to think positive about this . it doesnt matter if our opinion is not acceptable for the others people . because we are already get some idea and bring it into the discussion . at least we try our best to give an idea of something . otherwise, they will call us as a useless, just think ourself and dont want to get involve in giving some idea .

so my conclusion is no matter what happen, we should give our idea to the people . it doesnt matter people didnt accept it, it can show them that you are trying to give some ideas eventhough the idea is unpopular idea. you already try your best with giving the ideas.

These aren't dangerous ideas, in fact they're quite safe and they're also good ideas, just that maybe they've fallen out of fashion. For me, it's up to the audience to decide and accept on their own different perspective towards the idea. Somehow the unpopular ideas will be silent and someday it will be repeated, whether to settle the debate about the topic or to solve it.

From my point of view, as a speaker we have to find ways to speak up and explain even elaborate unpopular ideas briefly . So that we will get better concentration from audience. Unpopular ideas appear when a speaker does not understand clearly about the topic and this may cause speakers to define their ideas correctly and lose their ability to talk in front of audience. Ideas should be shared among the audience so that audience can gain a better idea from a speaker. People practically have ideas on every subject. Some of their ideas are popular, some even are unpopular. Whatever type of idea there are, individuals are prone to seek out others with similar ideas. This is particularly true with the unpopular ideas. The more unpopular the idea ,the greater is the need to shared ideas among audience. We as a speaker want to delivered more information that will be benefit to the audience. Nervousness and fear is the main problem for a speakers when it turn up to deliver unpopular ideas.A potential speakers should be able to elaborate unpopular ideas interesting in some other ways. In conclusion, unpopular ideas should be speak bravely and confidentially.

Silence. The most common thing in a speech. Sometimes it happens when a speech is given with an unpopular idea. This will effect the person with some reasonable way.

According to normal thinking, unfamous ideas will give a person to say whatever they want. The elaboration of the idea will be ridiculous and maybe it will not be accepted by the audience. This is not good for the speaker because facts are facts and it will not change when time passes by.

Besides that, related to ridiculous information, it might give a person to remain silence because lack of information in his or her mind. Information should be given correctly without any doubt and without lack of confidence. COnfidence will down if someone is not confident of him or her self. It is because information cannot be given fluent and continuously.

Therefore, having an unpopular idea in a speech can give many negative effects while giving a speech. Avoiding this situation is very important to enhance a better and quality speech.

When you sharing some of your ideas whether in meeting, group discussion or in public speaking competition, there must be some of your ideas that is unpopular idea and people not so agreed with that idea. Don't feel that your idea is useless. There is a way how to make the other people accept and agree with your unpopular idea.

First, you need courage to take whatever risk to make people believe that your unpopular idea is not useless. You need to speak confidently, show your leadership and try promote your idea with proof. Then, you must elaborate your idea wisely and try to make your idea great and nice. People may get interested in your unpopular idea when they saw how you talk with confident and your leadership. Then your idea will be accepted.

Second, you must think correctly before you share your idea. When you think, your idea may be possible to carry out. And it will make the other people give their full attention to your idea. Because the idea thats come out when you think may be the brilliant idea and people accept it although it is unpopular.

In conclusion, don't think that your unpopular idea is the worst and useless. Try to make the other people attract and believe in your ideas. How know that unpopular idea will be the great idea in the end.

Unpopular idea doesn't attract audience's attention? doesn't make sense? its completely ridiculous! basically,it depends on us how we delibrate our thoughts to the audience even it's considered as lame, typical, unattractive topic.to add some salt in a less attractive topic,a speaker should convey their thoughts in an interesting manner whereby more facts, detailed research, and even relating that particular issue with the society can be included. latest fact and new outcome are very helpfull in getting audience's attention. a speaker may also add in some informative jokes which can enhance the understanding. for instance, once the speaker had come out with facts for a period of time, they can opt to make joke to avoid boredom in audience.besides, using an appropriate tone to give life in our speach is another method.tones plays a major role in gettin public's attention and feedback.a speaker should be confident and strong to emphasis his points. this can indirectly get the crowd to understand your speach. a good intonation and facial expression are the first impression of a speaker.thus, making an unpopular idea to be attractive is just as simple as ABC.even,it's not our cup of tea,we should deliver our idea level best,100%.nothing is lost or wasted by delibrating thoughts.choices are in our hands.

Should we stay silent about the things that are important to us? But, not necessarily we have to think some tips how to express our opinion when it is unpopular ideas such as think about who you are talking to, say everything is non-confrontational as possible, listen to what anyone else around has to say, and remember for any opinion you have.

First and foremost, think about who you are talking to is very important. It is because when we are talking we must make sure that is this a stranger or a friend? If the former, you have to take care not to appear belligerent or crazy because your words will be written off as the ramblings of someone with a few screws loose. If you are debating with a friend think about his personality. It is to avoid his feelings be hurt by debating with him? You must will he talk over you and refuse to listen? Before you are talking you know your audience.

Secondly, say everything is non-confrontationally as possible. You have a right to an opinion, but you should not a right to start a fight. Besides that, people will listen to your points if they are offered up calmly, but will only feel defensive of their own opinion that assuming it differs from yours. Besides that, thinking positive is also an assisting way to deliver an unpopular idea. We must think that our speech will success from the beginning till the end.

In our system our government, not much can happen without fairly broad consensus. Most of us get to share the credit or blame, whatever happens. What worries me is that we find ourselves sharing a great deal of blame – we seem to get a lot of thing wrong.
One thing I’ve learned is that when we appear to approaching a consensus, it pays to listen carefully to the outliers. People may have good reasons to object but those good reasons may not get the exposure or consideration they deserve. Such a case may be upon us now: we seem to be moving toward a consensus about guns – particularly about the extended clips used in the tragic Tuscon shooting.
It’s worth reading a well considered objection. The claim is that the extended clips do have a legitimate purpose – a serious defense against crime, particularly for women and the elderly. You may not buy the argument or you may think the applicability is too minor to matter. Nevertheless, it is absolutely true that some people believe the use of extended clips is important to their personal protection and safety.
It can also be argued that the extended clips can too easily be abused as we saw in Tuscon. It can be argued that the cost of abuse is greater than the benefits of safety, although it can’t be strongly argued without supporting data. But even if the benefits clearly outweigh the costs, they don’t apply uniformly. X may get a benefit, but Y loses a benefit and, from Y’s perspective, a right to personal safety. Lots of things that provide benefits can be abused. Do we deny some people rights and benefits because other people might abuse their rights? Thinking about this issue in the abstract may get you to different conclusions than thinking about the particulars of this case.

Pulling out yourself when you think your idea in unpopular..? Honestly, it is not a wise decision to be made. As for me,I always take that as a motivation and strive to push it become popular. There is no need for one's idea to be so popular so they can talk about it. It is not easy for us to get such a big an opportunity to come in front and voice out our ideas. Frankly said, people whom do not have guts to speak about their idea just because they think it is unpopular is totally a coward. Take that as a challenge for us to be unique and different from others and at the same time show to the crowd that we have at least something brilliant in our minds. New ideas are usually able to make a difference...

This might sound corny or well...uh....like a bribe but humans are humans, homo sapiens that would never change. We desire compliments, praise and secretly have a dying urge to be well liked and accepted by everyone. "I don't wanna be the call at 4 in the morning" says Pink the pop star. Truly, loneliness is not the path anyone would choose if given the choice.

Now having said all those, what i really wanted to address was that if you compliment, accept and praise people. People tend to be more willing to accept YOUR ideas or suggestions and be less judgmental. Truth be told, i dislike politician talks because they're just trying to buy our hearts and votes. But a glimpse of reality shows that if you wanna get people to have a "change of heart" then heck, aim at their hearts.

For eg, it's commonly known that alot of people hate Justin Bieber. But if bieber came and did something good for them, then they'd become a bielieber. Ain't that true?

Drawing to an end, i would like to say, be OPEN minded, accept criticism and make it constructive. Then the audience would be open and would accept YOUR ideas, no matter how "unpopular" they are.

For an example, Thomas Edison who created the light bulb was laugh at many many times for his weird and unpopular theories. It was believe that he took 320 trails to finally find one of his bulb lighting up. But see what man he has become today. A legend!.
Same goes, what is the problem of giving your ideas? Even is its unaccepted, it will still impact listeners. And to your surprise, 80% of Great-Men in the world are the ones with weird ideas that turns to Awesome stuff in the end.
So just voice up what what you have inside. You never know that someday you will be a Legend!.

You can bring the unpopular ideas in a unpopular way, but that's not a good way. So, try approach in a popular way and link it with unique ways, would be surprising that it triggers other with your creativity. That is when your market starts coming in and becoming the next highlight. So, a 100% from me to unpopular ideas, who knows, it could affect the next generation.

Almost by definition, an unpopular idea is the idea from a rare viewpoint. On most issues, these different and unpopular ideas get less voted. Ultimately, the main-stream ideas will win but to a very large extend, the unpopular ideas will last long. We all know very well how the technology today had its unpopular start. I don't claim that these ideas are always correct but ideas of this such always bring a main contribution to the social stream, our community. And it takes more than courage to flick an unpopular idea to the people. My thought is, as long as the idea is worth discussing, I will muster the courage and find ways to present the new idea and give a whole 100% to work on it, insyaAllah. As for me, popular ideas are boring.

The only thing that should determine whether an idea is good or bad is common sense and a person's conscience. A crowds prejudices ahould not make them ignorant towards a good, rational idea. Many good ideas have been shot down because people rejected them due to their prejudices and personal interests. An audience has to listen to an idea rationally before they form an opinion about it. It is the speakers right to be heard without prejudice.

I personally believe that it's not wrong if we want to express an unpopular idea, its just depends on how we going to express it. Well if I had face the problem as stated above, its 100% that I will give my own opinion in the situation when my topic is unpopular. It's because I think that sometime the audience would like to hear real stories compare to facts.
So if I ever faced this kind of situation, the thing I will do maybe is to give my own opinion about the topic, and give a real-life-based example to the audience.

Back to where we are. Ideas like everyone can say have the pros and the cons. Not every idea is brilliant to one's sight. What's actually is an Unpopular idea? For me , in my opinion it is an idea normally people would not think of not an idea that would be rejected by the people. So let's think of it this way , this so called 'unpopular idea ' would be a great opportunity to tell everyone about it.

Some might just kill you off at the start but that does not mean that everyone hated it . Take a look at our great local entrepeneur , Tony Fernandez. I read about him and I was inspired.A man who took over a small airline company with rm1 but it has over a million worth of debt. Everyone saw this as a suicide and he sees it as a opportunity.Plus , he has an idea that ticked off everyone. He said " let's make everyone fly ,"

Technically what he meant was he want to make airline ticket so cheap that allows everyone to fly to places they want. At first , everyone was laughing at his regime and just take a look at AirAsia now. They are so popular right now that it overtook the national airline company by revenue by just a few years after Tony took over the company.

So I guess unpopular ideas are really meant to be something.People will get bored of the popular ones , so it's time to revolute the world with the ideas that are so called 'unpopular'.

thank you.

Well, to me, I think there is no such thing as "idea may not be popular among the audience". We are human and we can make the impossible possible, make the unrelated related, make the bore topic interesting and for sure we can make the unpopular popular. We ourself, our audience and everyone of us may face any unexpected situation in life, so what we can do to make our unpopular topic become popular? That is relate our topic with the situation that we may face in our life by giving an example or make an assumption. Let our audience mentally "faced" the situation we made for them or in another word, we made them experienced it, then it will be easier for us to persuade them.
What I can suggest is, put every effort into our speech and be courage enough since we got nothing to lose even if we fail to speak well. Just bear in mind, this is the first time and maybe the last for us to speak about this same topic in front of the same audience, so, do your best! Never say never! Absolutely correct!

hi pn zue.

frankly,i would say about 60% that i would share my unpopular idea.i think that an idea is an idea, and it's not something to be ignored.

some ideas may become unpopular because other people might think the idea is simple or they might already had the idea in their mind before.who cares if they already thought of it. as long as you're the one who say it first,so it's your idea and everybody else should take your ideas in account and consider about it.

i strongly hope that we should respect other people's ideas even it is quite lame or simple.it is still a statement that came from somebody's head and it is crucial for us to listen to the ideas.

thank you.

Good evening Puan Zue,

In terms of percentage,I would give it a 100 % and I’m going to be straight forward towards this particular discussion. When someone presents an idea,it is not a necessity that it should always abide by rules, norms or even discretion.Keep in mind that the concept of presenting a new idea is actually thinking beyond the boundaries of everyone else. This shows us that our idea may fall easily within these three terms that speakers fear.We should never back down or give up on an idea that we have just because what other people think about it.we are what we are,so technically if we present our idea, there will surely be a few lost souls who just can’t quite agree with what we have to say. This is due to the fact that either they are afraid of this new concept that we are about to bring towards this world or it’s just that they are so use to the environment that exist between them.Due to this,we should fight with facts and prove to them that every idea has a meaning to it,so why can’t just we all listen to it and take some time to ponder around it and then only come up with a conclusion.People say that we should never judge a book by it’s cover and that is exactly the perfect term when it comes to someone disagreeing on a speakers idea. For example,Thomas Edison never did give up his conquest to understand the concept of light and the creation of light in a bulb. When his fellow peers asked him how come he never did give up eventhough he failed so many times,”He intelligently said that he found 9,000 ways not to make a light bulb work and 1 way to make it work. Therefore my fellow comrades, this clearly shows that we should never give up eventhough people have issues with our ideas because sooner or later, they will learn how to accept the ideas that we present to them.

Besides that,a new idea is like fresh meat where we have to simmer it and let it cook nicely in between the tendons for quite some time so that it would taste good.In other words,we should always present our idea in a persuasive manner, let it be in a calm an intriguing manner and make it as if you’re singing a song where you add an extra pitch at certain words when we are presenting our ideas. This actually creates an atmosphere that the audience would dwell into and make them think,”Hey,this person’s idea actually makes sense”.Therefore we should play around with our words and not distort it’s true meaning but instead present it in a effective manner.

I think I have said all I wanted to Puan Zue and I hope that you enjoyed reading my comment.

Thank you for you’re time Puan Zue,

With regards,

Pavendhran

If i have to choose an unpopular topic to persuade my audience.I think i must more confidence than my audience to share my knowledge or what information that i knew about this topics...... In other words,if i'm lack of confidence to inform my audience about the advantage for this. How come they will be believe and agree my think and my courage.

Whatever it will be argue or doubt by the audience, we must straightforward to answer them.....Then they will be slowly accept it...At last we will be win the claps from them.....

If i get an unpopular topic, with the percentage of 80% I will choose to deliver the topic. As I mention before on some post reply, that public speaking is something that are challenging and exciting . When I get an unpopular idea this will create a bigger challenge to me. We all know that we must learn from our mistake, if we dont try it,then how are we going to know the correct way to deliver an unpopular idea? To me, delivering an unpopular idea, we must first understand the topic well. If you are the one who speaking in front and you dont even understand the topic well then how the audience going to get a clear picture about the topic? Besides, we also shouldnt just understand by without doing research about the topic. To be well prepared we should gather more information it will definately help you more to deliver the unpopular idea and make it intrresting. Everything in this world have its own uniqueness and its only depends on us how to find it out. Therefore, in order to gain more knowledge we should take difficult chalenges . Put no fear on trying and learning !

For me,if i were to explain an unpopular idea,i will make an early preparation, the theory behind and explanation because i know that there will be people who will reject my idea with critic, their own so-called 'disadvantages' or 'side effect' and etc.The no. of percentage depends on the places and people that who im gonna explain my idea with. For example,if there is a meeting and the member is all my friends then i will give 100% because im not afraid to speak out my idea and also not scare of their criticize, this is because i know them well and they make some critic on my idea just to make my idea even more prefect or something which will really benefit a club or society. The story is different again when im meeting with a group of people/colleague in a company, and i will give 70% of courage to speak out my unpopular idea bcoz they are still consider stranger to me and i don't even know some of them including their personality. Not all the people critic our idea just bcoz they think our idea is not good enough or not logic but some people critic our idea simply becoz they scare our idea is too good and might be accepted by the company and there will be a change in salary or position in certain company, you know people in the working field just so realistic!

It is not wrong for us to speak up an unpopular idea. It actually depends on how audiences accept the idea. For me, unpopular idea is not that bad as what other people think. And of course the speaker needs to deliver the idea in interesting and creative ways. Unpopular idea actually could manipulate human thinking. Most of the time, people would think about popular idea and they will not expose to other site of thinking which then will not expand their understanding. The most important here is that unpopular idea may turn out to be popular idea one day and I believe that popular ideas are also unpopular before until the speaker manage to persuade the audience about it.
If the audience can’t accept the idea, the speaker needs to change the way he or she deliver it and persuade the audience with the information had. Therefore, I would 100% express my opinion in situations when it is unpopular.

Unpopular ideas are certainly tough to be spoken out. This is because, one doesnt have the confidence when proposing something new or alien to people. They feeling of being opposed, or not being trusted just makes the person more tensed when delivering an idea. I usually go by the flow when saying something, because it is much easier,. However i do not back out, if something needs to be said urgently. Same goes for an idea. I f i really need to make a stand, i'll have enough confidence to propose my idea. Mindset is important to win half the battle in convincing people. Thus, I am 100% when it comes to giving out an idea in unpopular situations.

I will 100% Speak up my idea although I know it might be unpopular or disagree by people.

First of all, SO WHAT if people disagree with me? As long as I didn't break the law, as long as I feel true to myself, as long as I feel there's justice in me, I will stand up and speak out my idea! Many things are controlled by fate, by lives. Some people are rich, some are poor whereas there are the clever ones and the fail ones. Why? This is because they didn't took care their fate well. I believe that fate is in my hands. I decide my life, I make my life.

This is life. When there are people who disagree you, believe that there are people who agree with you as well. The more people who hate you, the more people who like you. People hate someone because he/she envies you. They hate you because he/she couldn't be better than you in some way.

Still, life goes on, I believe that when people disagree, there will be people who agree. Thank you. =)

Unpopular idea can be popular if you deliver the speech with the right indication, attitude and antonation. Technically, it may sounds hard but you have to fully prepared and rehearse yourself for the great outcome. You need to perform series of research as it may develop your content point with interesting facts and trivias. As a speaker, it's a massacre if the idea that you want to deliver is not fully understand by the audience. You may try other methods and technics. Based on the research by the Speaking of Research (SR) 80% people said that the delivery method of speech play a great role in persuading people. Be polite, cheerful, and charismatic. A good attitude will help you more than you think. People will hear what you have to say without thinking that you want to force your point of view on them.

First of all, I would like to ask you a question. Is it unpopular idea mean that the idea is not work?
Definitely no. This is just an idea or solution that we seldom see.

Is it so important that the way to solve the problem or the problem you face can be solve? When unfamiliar idea comes out, why don’t you just use it if the idea is work?

Nowadays, many of the speakers are intent to come out with more general ideas to the audience. Because of this, it had made a big mistake. Nowadays, we no longer like to hear the general information that maybe everyone already knew it.

We are now to look for the out of the box ideas. It is not only creative, but also special to us. To me, I am pretty sure that I will express my opinion in the situation that is unpopular as long as the idea is applicable and useful.

Hamidi Zulkifli said...

Salam pn.Zue,

For me,the percent of my ability to present an unpopular idea is actually depends on my interest on that idea itself. It does not matter if it is an unpopular idea among the audience as long as i have high interest of the idea,it will be okay for me and i'm willing to continue giving the speech. But if even i thinking that the idea is unpopular and bored,i would only have about 40% desire to give my speech.

However,we also need to think about the audience. They will definitely ignore our speech if the speech is about something that does not interest them. For instances,do you think that a group of engineering student will pay full concentration on a speech that talk about the human respiratory system or human blood circulatory system?Of course not, plus they don't even care about it.

Because of that,in my opinion,it it important that we have fully prepare about our ideas before giving any speech. It does not matter if the ideas is popular or not,if we prepare,we will be 100% committed to share the ideas with audiences.

till then,thank you

Although it is quite difficult to persuade and tell people on a topic they are not so interested with but I still want to take the challenge. I believe, with confidence and the enough of evidence to supports my ideas, I can change their mind. Besides that, more effort must be applied when doing research on the unpopular topics, and this will impress the audience about the topic more. Imagine if the speaker himself also don't understand well about his topic, how he gonna pass it to the audience? It will only make the audience feel the speech is just a waste of time. More research is done means the speaker will have more confidence to change the mind of the audience.

Most importantly, the ways to persuave and convince make an important role for audience to make up their decision.
But sad to say that, there only 25% on me.

Firstly, it doesnt matter if my topic isn't popular. What matters is I LIKE MY TOPIC and I'm fired up about it. Ones there's the flare, no amount of water's gonna cool that off. Besides that, showing confidence helps in drawing the audiences attention towards the topic. No one is gonna listen to a person who has no passion in the things he's gonna present, therefore, being confident and passionate about your topic is an important key.

Standing in front of bunch of audience and giving a speech is something brave to do especially persuading audiences.I would say that the most difficult speech is persuasive speech if compared to other speeches such as informative speeches, and other type of speeches. To persuade the audience is to make them agree on what our speech topic about. For example to persuade the audience about bicycle is the best transportation around the world. Its because when we use bicycle it is a form of exercise and it does not emitted dangerous gases like vehicles normally do.
So coming back to your question,I would say i'll be in only 40% to express my opinion when the situation is unpopular. This is because of like you said it takes a lot of courage to stand and convince the audience on whatever that i'm talking about.

When you get an unpopular idea to perform, it doesn't means that it is the end of the world. Idea, a term that relate to imagination or creativity. Well,no matter how unpopular the idea is, there's always some way to express it by more colorful to the audience. Therefore, don't get upset first when you get an unpopular idea, but you should be glad because this is the time for you to be outstanding among other 'boring' ideas, this is the time for you to get the attention of others if you manage to bring it to audience in such unique and interesting way. Lastly, you have to be confident when perform the unpopular idea so that you can convince your audience to agree with you.

Do you know why those business man or celebrity are so success? Because they always pick up unpopular idea and used it in unique and interesting way. :)

One thing I’ve learned is that when we appear to approaching a consensus, it pays to listen carefully to the outliers. People may have good reasons to object but those good reasons may not get the exposure or consideration they deserve.

Many avoid disagreeing with people or saying no because they think people will stop liking them, or because they think their own opinions are stupid or worthless. This attitude not only stems from, but helps perpetuate, low self-esteem. It is true that sometimes expressing an unpopular opinion or saying no to a request will make you a little less popular for the moment but, in the long run, assertive people usually earn the respect of others and as a result begin to have more respect for themselves.

You have to admit, assertiveness comes with a lot of perks. Like any new skill, learning to be more assertive takes time and practice, but it is definitely worth the effort.

Speak out an unpopular ideas is someone who is not afraid to speak their mind and do what they want in the face of ridicule and hatred. Does one have the legal right to speak his mind? Is it unethical to allow a person to speak openly on any matter?

Therefore, one must agree that it is only ethical that a person be allowed to say whatever they desire. So, the unpopular ones are more popular than the populars. Lets we think about it. Although all speech is not acceptable, the unpopular ideas can succeed only through openness, honesty and a tolerance, no matter how hateful or offensive. Therefore, everyone has the right to speak freely right?

I had read one post from other blog about an unpopular idea and what make me interested are he try to speak on his unpopular idea in other ways such as written on his blog or any other things can help him to speak up. He said, "all ideas of something that might work, all possible things that we imagine could work and all the things we imagine could work, that could work"

So to tell you a truth, the ability for me to speak are actually depends on what topics or issues and it is also depends on the situation. For me, I really like to speak or express my opinion with written or discuss in the medium ways such as on my blog, my facebook or written something on letter because the delivery of unpopular ideas can be more accepted through that way. Besides, a lot of idea can be express without feeling afraid if the ideas may not be popular among the audience.

Politically, one must agreed that ethically and legally a person is allowed to say whatever they desire.

So, this are my opinion about your title, Pn. Zue. I'm not best in my speak and neither in my ideas. But, what i'm doing right now are also my an unpopular ideas. Perhaps.

Thank you :)

When its come to unpopular idea, I rather do something that will attract people to listen. If they can't listen, we can write it. Sometimes writing is the best way to express the unpopular idea if we can't talk about it.

For me, I rather write it in my blog or maybe in my facebook. I love to express everything through writing actually. Writing give me a lot of confident to express. But when it comes to talk I really need some courage. With writing, I can express the unpopular idea without having to feel afraid if the ideas are been rejected by the audience.

But I think I should find at least 50% confident in myself to talk in front of the audience to express the unpopular ideas. Because not everyone are reading and also not everyone are listening. Take an example of our Prime Minister, if he doesn't have the confident to talk to public how can he convince the public? Can he just write?Nope. He must talk to the public. Some unpopular idea might be risky but who knows it can done.

Everyone has the right to speak no matter it is about unpopular or popular ideas.

needs a lot of preparation to make it a popular one,
most of the people whom are given such topics might get stuck in some part. Such as not knowing where and when to insert something interesting in it.
some people might just not have the confidence to speak up and thus, makes the idea an unpopular one .. as said ,wanting to carry out and unpopular idea
needs courage , persuasiveness and creativity to make the idea interesting .
you need to be in the right tone and let the
crowd decide the level of interest they have
in the idea a person is carrying .

But, sometimes i also give my unpopular idea to others and discussed it in different ways. Such as in blog or facebook. Through that ways, my ideas will be accepted my some people. And also, i will not feel nervous to speek infront of people.

That is my opinion according to your article. Till then, thank you. :)

I myself am usually open in expressing my ideas, unless I get the hint that what I have to say is maybe offensive in view of others. In that case I keep what’s inside my mind to myself. But you must be aware that there are people out there who get easily offended, no matter what you say, no matter how you’re going to scrutinize it, you’re always going to have an opposition. Therefore, you must always be prepared to back up your statements with facts.

If we want to have a good understanding on the concept of popularizing an idea, we should take a look into methods of persuasion for public speaking. But, let’s not get distracted away from the main topic here, the question is “What happens to an unpopular idea?” the answer is rather simple, I can tell you it all depends on the individual who came up with that particular “unpopular” idea, his/her charisma, persuasive abilities and knowledge of subject matter will surely have a great impact on the audience opinion when presenting the idea.

When Martin Luther King was giving speeches about the idea of racial equality, many people didn’t find that idea appealing, some strongly opposed him, but he stood his ground and finally achieved his dreams. What do you think would have happened if someone else, a less confident person who lacked those attributes I mentioned earlier presented that idea? Well I can tell you that, there is a great chance that he/she wouldn’t succeed and the idea would have diminished with the passing of time.

Sometimes there are ideas and convince them to third parties and I have to make sure before you and the discovery of the public who will speak or communicate with him due to the difference of opinion and ideas.

Possible to take a two-way either acceptance or rejection

Acceptance if the speaker was able to provide evidence and proof to convince and try to convince the idea
Rejection if the speaker speaks without any evidence of proof and the listener wants to persuade the idea

In the end, must try to persuade and attempt to do better

Unpopular idea?It is too subjective and it sometime depend on how the speaker give the speech.I believe every popular idea come from unpopular idea.Let we take a look at the example below

Genting Founder : Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong.
His idea to build a hilltop resort at unexplored hill.At first most of people think he is crazy but he brushed off all these negatives and went ahead with his idea.

Now you can see how popular the hilltop resort become.I believe every people know where is the location of Genting Highland.Sometime unpopular idea wont become popular when the time you point it out but who know someday it will become much popular than others idea. All we need is courage and gut to point out our idea.

In my opinion, the main point that the presenter must focus is that to think positive about his idea. On the other hand the presenter must be ready to answer the questions and make a plan and predict the positive and negative view of expected question. During the presentation if you face with a question which you cannot answer, you can answer the question with asking another question. The most important point is the confident of presenter while his speech.

As long as I feel that unpopular idea is truly a great idea for me, then I don't mind to express it out with 100% possibility (But I might refrain from expressing the unpopular idea if I myself don't really think that idea is good enough). It's normal in our life where some people will agree with our ideas, and some people will disagree. If they disagree with your idea, you could try to convince them why do you think the idea was a great idea. With some rational explanations and with your unique and interesting ways of delivering that unpopular idea, probably they would change their mind and starting to accept your idea. If they still think that your idea is ridiculous and keep ignoring your idea, then get over it. What can we do if they are really not interested with our idea. You lose nothing, and no harms will be done to you. So, don't ever be scared to voice it out whenever you have any good ideas, regardless if it's popular or unpopular. After all, it's worth a try.

Salam Madam Zue,

Speaking about unpopular ideas, one should be brave enough to share their thoughts to the audience eventhough they already knew that their opinion will not be accepted by others. How long we want to be a coward and leave our thoughts unheard? One should not be afraid to get laugh by others,we should prove that this any unpopular ideas is the most valuable thought that could not be found anywhere.

It takes one that is full of confidence to speak up all their thoughts. For example, politician, especially from the opponent, they always trying hard to get their unpopular ideas be heard by others.People nowadays should look up such behaviour.

And personally, for me,I'd probably be the one who speaks about unpopular ideas 90% times :)

Salam Puan Zue,
After reading this blog, I started to remember some of the ideas that I’ve given before to people, and why some of them end up unheard, unappreciated and sometimes… end up with weird looks.

Before my college life, when I was in my home town, I didn’t really have to give new ideas, since everything was the same in there, thought to myself ‘why try to look cocky?’... Not to mention that I was lazy back then, laid-back; Leaving all the hard work for my older brother “I hope he's not reading this”.

However, college life is different, utterly different.

You start taking charge of yourself, away from the home comfort, and your repetitive life where you don’t have to give new ideas to get by college and life.

In college, Every semester is different from the previous one, every class has different lecturer, and students you’ve never seen, you start to wonder where did they pop-up from?.. every class have new ideas and brings new ideas into your brain.

Also there’s the fact that you’re in Malaysia! The best place where you get to meet all kinds of people, people with different cultures, different beliefs, different all around! It’s amazing because you get to share all your ideas with them, old ideas that are norms in your country and/or new ideas that you come up with.

I started seeing my ideas at work in group works, projects and with my new friends; I had to come up with ideas for the projects, for the group work I participated in.
What I noticed is that ideas are not actually only thoughts, they’re thoughts that are about to become things in the real world, requiring actions to fulfill them, to make them Happen.

Thoughts and ideas means to many people “more work” which is not appreciated here if I have to say myself…
I have tried many times presenting my ideas to people that I worked with, but sadly, I mostly end up with just denials from the people, simply because ideas means Work.
Unpopular ideas are ideas that require new and different approach of thinking and also new/more work.
People sometimes reject the idea simply to protect themselves from hard work, and extra work.
But in reality, ideas are the source of everything, everything in this world is based on thoughts that started in the mind, and took place in the real world…

For example, there is no more Electricity in the world today than there was a century ago, but until someone recognized the thought of it, and gave us the law, by which it could be of service, we received no benefit; now that the idea is given, practically the whole world is lit by it.
Ideas, as long as that the person who gives them is ready to work hard to make them happen, ready to show his persistence and willingness to make them a reality, are always welcomed by me, even if I don’t approve it completely.
I want to end my comment with a quote that goes like this:
“An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied” ~Arnold H. Glasgow

Beside this I will analyse the topic from different aspects. For instance, I will get the idea from the students', the lecturers', the locals' n the foreigner's point of view.

To deliver an unpopular idea, I only have about 60% of capability to express it in my own way. Despite the fact that the idea is not interesting enough for everyone to hear, but there are many techniques to expand the idea to make the speech more fascinating. It is true that to present the unpopular idea, it takes determination. It is a thought-provoking responsibility for every speaker has to take whenever they received an idea that seems unexciting. Not all of the popular or interesting ideas are attractive for everyone to listen, the unpopular idea is also worth if everyone pay attention and listen to it. Thus every speaker must take positive actions and thoughts whenever they got an unpopular idea to talk about.

Hi,
According to my opinion, if I have an UnPopular idea in my community, must explain that for all people with good example. show explaining the idea and all the positive aspects .
Also explain the idea to a small group of society, for example start with your family and then friends and then their friends and so on ....
until my unpopular idea be accepted by all .Then i'll make a presentation about my idea for all people in a public place to explain the idea for people without any nervous and with deliver my speech in a good way and very well explanation .
i think maybe i got only 40-50% ability in express my opinion in that situation.

If the idea is unpopular or whatsoever it is call, just present it with confidence and show more variety on how we present it. I am sure that audience will focus more and understand what the idea is all about. In term of percentage, I put 80% on how I can express the unpopular idea. I think laa.Thats all ma'am :)

it's quite challenging to express an idea when it is unpopular. As for me, i'm not the person who can usually stand up and speak my mind in front of people easily. i would first need lots of courage and confidende supported by solid facts to do that. it is normal if people wouldn't want to hear your idea on that unpopular matter. if this happens to me, i will just deliver my best and let people judge as we all have our own opinion when it comes to every little thing in life.

anyhow, it is not futile to express an unpopular idea because most of them made a huge success. just refer to the history of inventions :)

As the article, express the unpopular idea is not an easy thing when we want to speak up in front of the audience or in the stage. In term of percentage I will express 50-50 percent. This is because the unpopular idea will be worst when audience do not know and can not catch up what we mean in our speech. Beside, audience will get bored with the topic we present and this will cause our self esteem during the speech and do not have interest to continue it. However, when it come to share idea with my friend it could be easy because I’m become more comfortable when they are response to my idea. This because it is look like sharing in small group rather than speak up in front of the people that we do not know who they are and what they maybe think about us. Beside we easily get nervous to share the unpopular idea. As a speaker we must make sure our audience and listener have interest in our topic and get 70% attention to our speech which is the topic or idea we deliver is the known idea by the audience. This will cause the presentation become smoother and we comfortable to share the idea.

An UnPopular situation need courage to let others listen and giving good feedback to me since I'm afraid people will laugh at me or my opinion will seem overrated. in some cases, I'm not someone who is being heard of, so i need creativity to present what i want or sometimes, people don't get what i mean. when it come to unpopular idea, i have to relate it with real situation around us. like it or not, i have to voice out my opinion regardless the audience acceptance.

There is no problem in presenting unpopular idea except the confidence when faced with rejections. In order to gain more confidence, first present it to people who are open to ideas, if not, just imagine it so you can manage/control your nervous ;) Then you may gain more insights of the idea. The advantages/disadvantages. By doing this, you'll know what to expect when presented in a crowd whereby the idea is probably "unpopular". So you'll be better prepared, ready for the negative feedback and better equipped to answer their questions. But one have to accept if the unpopular idea is actually is not beneficial when studied further.

75-85% depending on how strong the insights/advantages i have :)

So its all in the speaker's hand to give a better performance.I will try my level best to overcome this.

In my opinion, the possibilities for me to express my own opinion in situations when it is unpopular is around 70 - 75 percent. Believing in my own opinion that it can influence others as well as being not afraid to say it out among a group of people is my way of portraying confidence because confidence brings about self-believe. Even though the opinion may be unpopular, i will take the necessary step to make it more reachable towards the targeted crowd. It can be expressed as decorating a fruit cake with tasty chocolate toppings to make it more appealing. Expressing an unpopular opinion signifies the believe you have in yourself as well as provokes thinking among the people who hear your opinion.

Unpopular ideas will bury once the ideas are not being expressed to other people. Think this, we do prefer to have tailor-made apparels as the designs are unique and different from others. Same goes to ideas.

Different ideas from different people should be taken into consideration as all of them are unique enough without looking whether the ideas thrown out are unpopular or cliches ideas. Let the speakers voice out their ideas and we as the audience or listeners can scrutinize the ideas with our own jurisdiction.

By the way, I think 50% of the ideas will not be thrown out once we face something unusual such as strange audience, people and others. These will make a barrier for speakers to voice out their ideas, plus of having such unpopular ideas.

What can we do is just try as good as possible to attract the audience to listen to our ideas. Who knows, the unpopular ideas turn out to be something unique and acceptable among the audience. We won't know, if we don't try :)

well, I think there is around 30 percent probability that I would express my opinion in a situation like this. sometimes, "unpopular ideas" may become the fuse that ignite an amazing idea and turn it into a reality. what I know is that a large number of inventions began with strange ideas, but bear in mind that when someone is believing in something he will be able to do it and he can make it real.

NabilaY said...

Ideas are created from ones mind which reflects how they think. To me, an idea itself has no popularity but its how the community views it and accepts it. If it is liked by many, so it would be said as popular. But what about the ideas that are unknown and have not been explored yet? I wouldn't say it is unpopular. So to me,if a person comes up with an idea, they must have a good reason of thinking it in the first place. In terms of presenting the idea to an audience, if a person strongly believes in the idea, and have strong points in supporting the idea, I do believe even when the idea is to be said unpopular by others, the message or the reason it is came up with initially would be accepted by others and could become popular.
It takes a lot of guts and confidence to spill out whatever there is in the mind to support the idea when others see it as unpopular. Eventhough when it seems that our idea is good, but there must be a reason why others would think of it as unpopular. Maybe its the lack of information? or maybe how the presentation is done? or just could be that the idea is really dull and boring? So it is also crucial to understand that others might have they own perception and thoughts. Even with courage and confidence, one must have an open mind when presenting an idea because the outcome might be unexpected and shocking. It all depends on how the idea is presented and brought up to the audience and how the audience themselves interpret and accept it.
The main thing is to present the idea with full confidence whether it is popular or unpopular.
So to answer Pn.Zue's question on how much percentage would I likely to present an unpopular idea? I would say that it's 50/50 since there are lots of consequences to be thought of and i personally lack confidence :)

den said...

This topic is quiet interesting. For me, it doesn't matter whether the idea is popular or not. Since it was an idea, we should spit it out right?
Yes, the popular idea will have more advantages on attracting the audience but, it is not the only thing that affects the audience acceptance. There are much more criteria to attract the audience, such as, the way we present the idea. There have many ways or methods to be used when deliver some information to audience. For, the most important things to be prepared are how much of our understanding about the idea. If we have a good preparation and a research, it will convince the audience to listen about the ideas. I believe the presentation without a research and understanding about what we present is very important. Without knowledge, how can we convince a people about what we want to say? So, what I want to say is, it is not about popularity of the idea but how good or how prepared for us to deliver the idea to the audience. It will be 100% for me.
Thanks

"What happens to an Unpopular idea?"

I agree with the response of most people on this blog stating that in order to present an unpopular idea; you must be courage’s, brave, and confident and not be afraid of what other people might think. But in my opinion, the most important thing is how you present your unpopular idea.

You have to make sure that while expressing an idea, the delivery must be done in a very fun way which makes you and your idea likeable. The best way to do this is by using technologies such as visual aids and the delivery of your speech in tone that is word-by-word clear and understandable. You also have to make sure that you are in total control of your idea and your audience must not only understand it clearly, but you also have to give them a sense of entertainment as well. For example, visual aids, gestures, and even jokes can make your audience interested in the idea you’re presenting. I think by doing this, it will make your idea that you want to express more convincing as well.

But in order to do all this, it all comes back to being confident and charismatic. That is why we have to grasp every inch of opportunity that is presented to us as well as create an opportunity to let us be heard.

Having said all this, in terms of percentage of expressing my unpopular idea is about 60%. But when replying a comment in a blog, 100%.

Do you know that once a time before this, television was regarded as a tools that waste someones time? If the creator of the television didn't take the courage to really voice out their product, which is the television out to the crowd, the privilege of watching television that we has now is just a dream.

The speaker must really believe and have faith in what they want to throw to the audience. In that sense, the aura of the speaker can be felt by the audience. They can seems to really can't take their eyes far from the speaker as somehow the speaker, although the idea of the speech is not really catch their interest, the speaker himself demonstrate how he/she believe in what he/she said.

Other than that, speaker should try something that related to the life of the audience in front of them. By this way, the audience can really catch what the speaker want to convey to them as it is near to them.
For example, I'll take the television once again. The creator has been said that television will bring entertainment to household but the crowd that time say, they don't have time to watch television because of the work and etc. But when the creator of television point out the magical key words to the crowd, "a whole new way of relaxing", suddenly TV has become a phenomena back then. So try to relate your so-called unpopular idea with something that has been experienced by the audience, they will accept your idea,

To answer your question, i will be likely to express my own opinion in situations when it is unpopular is more or less 80% most of the time. This is because more to personal drawbacks rather than the idea itself.

My stance in this context would be 50-50% chance of me will try to present my unpopular idea. Interpersonally, I am a bad speaker and trying to present an unpopular idea with an audience is totally out of the question. You could say that I am lack of confidence too. But, if I am in a group, (which I have known and comfortable with) I think I can present my ideas well. I am just not good enough in handling the pressure and stage fright whenever I have a huge audience. Even if my idea COULD BE a technological breakthrough or whatsoever, I do not have the guts to present WHEN I started to assume my idea is unpopular with the crowd. I will leave this role to others whom have the 'gifts'.

Speaking about unpopular ideas, this is not something new to all of us. I myself do sometimes get stuck in a situation like that, where my idea gets rejected or being unheard. I find myself in a situation like this especially during university life. It is usual in universities where one will be given assignments and most of the time it is done as a group work. Every semester we will meet new classmates and lecturers. Not to forget that we are in Malaysia, thus we will communicate with people from different culture, different beliefs and etc. Therefore, they all come with different ideas from ours. In my opinion, when it comes to group work, I believe if I am comfortable with my group members then I think I will be able to deliver my idea without any problems. Besides that, I think all the team members should be given a chance to voice out their ideas without looking at the idea whether it is popular or not. The main reason I think, unpopular ideas exist is because one is not given a chance to speak out about their ideas. This is where unpopular ideas comes in. What if the unpopular idea is something new? Something you have never heard or had thought of before? When I find myself in a situation like this, I will then do some research to confirm my facts and information before I communicate or present my idea to my team members. This will then allow my team members to think twice and support my idea. Most importantly, I have to be confident with my own idea. If I am confident with my idea I will then take necessary steps to ensure my idea is being heard and not just be silent or left ignored by the group. There were times when there was a better idea than mine, so in this situation I won’t mind if my group members use the other idea. It’s the best feeling when I find myself having successfully persuaded my other team members to support my idea. If I am given an individual presentation, perhaps after a complete research and a good presentation, I may have high chances to convince the audience about my idea. During presentation, therefore with the help of technologies and visual aids I will convey my presentation in an attractive way. One must have persuasive skills to deliver their ideas. It depends on how the idea is presented and most importantly how the audience accept it. Last but not least, I will always stay positive even though my idea is not accepted and there is always a second chance.

That all about my opinion.. hehe

Quite clear for the answer you asked :)

I went on a trip to find myself, both physically and mentally. Detached for a couple of weeks from those I know and blending myself in a circle of new people. Like always, it was awkward for me. It felt awkward to be accepted(it's not like I'm that isolated by the way). I don't know, maybe for all I know since I was small, people come and go. Never get to know anyone that close. Enough about that shit. I got myself quite useful experiences while I was there. How shitty I manage my own time, how shitty other people manage their own. I realized, more or less, that we are all bunch of screwed up people.

Pathetic.

Still, I took some things for granted, some opportunities for granted. It was stupid. I was supposed to build myself better, do shits I never did. But fortunately pathetically, at least I have the idea of doing those things. Time will soon come when I commit myself to do something for people, and me.

Changing myself for the better.

For me popular or Unpopular idea is the other story because as long as what the speaker want to speak and share the idea we should take it serious. The level of confident of speaker should high so that the audience can see the creativity and spirit of speaker.
When the speaker speak with more confident, the audience will automatic think about the idea the audience will automatic think about the idea which the speaker speak about...then,the audience will emphasize on every point speaker speak about.i also believe the word be a confident than people will confident what you want to say..
Finally,,try to attract the attention of the audience...we should speak out whatever idea we have because for me handle unpopular ideas maybe also can attract the attention of the most of audience

As always, it is the norm these conditions often occur. For us, the idea that we describe may be very good in the eyes of those around us, but when a fairly knowledgeable they may not be able to accept the idea that we have described. This is because they think we do not think more about the issues discussed. So, to avoid this happening. We must explain our ideas as additional ideas if there is any. Moreover, we should be prepared to add to our knowledge that we are not humbled by them. Although the idea is not as good as we describe them, but at least we have tried. So, we should not feel inferior if our idea was not popular among friends.

Some people think that the idea that we bring in might be boring but why not we try to convince people and make effort into it.

Im pretty sure if the idea is sound very fun and the creativity of delivering is good it will get more attention of the audience or people.

Be positive and get the positive feedback.

I might be the one that usually speak unpopular idea all the time that my friend might be sound me so boring haha

In my opinion we should have a high confidence when delivering on some idea. It is not necessary whether the idea is popular or not because with confidence we can speak up, and share our idea clearly. Disagreement or may have to bear unforeseen consequences is a normal thing when you shared on some idea especially to those people who have a great information or experience on the thing that u have to discuss. Take it as a positive result and try to evaluate what you have been delivered on that matters (understand on the discussion). Counter back that groundbreaking situation by brainstorming your idea and speak it up again calmly. Good deliberating skill will also help you to act like a professional speaker. So, don’t forget to practice on your deliberating skill. Tackle you nervousness by focusing on what you want to deliver, not to the audience. Be like a professional entertainer (be bold). So, stand up and be brave to speak up.

First of all, unpopular ideas mean by lack of general approval or acceptance. Sometimes, when a person delivers ideas, those ideas are not popular within an individual or group of people. Almost by definitions, the ideas did not attract anyone to listen. Unpopular ideas will tend people to hold extreme interpretations of those ideas and they might come across cranks. Not to forget, most of the times the truth will be deny. In my opinion, even we hold unpopular ideas, we can avoid these patterns. For example, a group people will not only analysis individuals who exposed those unpopular ideas but also for the movements promoting ideas. So, when a person encounters unpopular ideas, they should try to be charitable towards the idea before delivering it

What happens to an UnPopular idea? For me:: To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
There are no unanimous opinions. Beliefs held by 75% of the population are not called opinions, they are called facts. And other than the most elementary truths , 68% belief in anything is becoming increasingly rare.
Change, by definition, requires us to embrace a new (or contrary) opinion. Whether we are seeking to change ourselves or the world around us, there is no transformation without the introduction of a new idea. And new ideas are almost always met with confrontation on some level.
To be fair, years later, I have learned to present minimalism differently and cut off many of the most common objections before they even surface. Nowadays, rare is the individual who argued vehemently against my understanding and case for minimalism. I have learned to promote the positives of minimalism rather than the negatives of consumerism.
I think owning less is a better way to live. Because of this opinion, I feel a responsibility to tell others and present the case for it whenever possible. Inviting others to a better way of life is an act of love. We must see it as such and stand firm in the face of opposition. This obligation remains true whether we are speaking of minimalism or countless other unpopular opinions..
Your life is valuable. It is the greatest asset you own. And it holds potential for great things.
Don’t slip into mediocrity by living your life based solely on popular opinion.

In my Opinion in this kind of situation The opener that you want to start your speak-up with is so important... the thing that we learned a lot about it during this semester so it should be something absolutely attractive and to show the others that their opinion about this topic is not all right even though it needs to be polite and don't make them feel offended.
the other thing that you can do is to be prepared with finding all the possible disagreement and opposition comments and prepare for the best answer for all of them to show them that they are wrong.
