2nd UNITEN Public Speaking Competition

The event was fun and fascinating with a good line of talented public speakers and also, budding leaders. I'd say that the EDSoc. committee has chosen very apt and competitive themes - semi-finals : A Malaysian Mind, Finals - "Mickey Mouse" as President. Well, it's just timely that our speakers (known for their intelligence) apply a bit of wit, humour and persuasive influence here.

Most importantly, many thanks to all our participants. The event wouldn't be a success without you. The original number expressing interests is undoubtedly higher than the turn up during registration..nevertheless...isn't that a common phenomenon already in speaking competitions?? So, I'd like to salute all those who came for the preliminary round this morning. It's not so easy to accept this oratory challenge, and you've won the first battle. To Nadia, all the best in your final semester, and may your strong will find you a good career path. To Dinesh, it's great to have you around in the preliminary round. We shall meet again next year, okay.

Now, since this is a national public speaking competition, we have received good response from our neighbouring universities. Thanks to UKM, UNIKL, TARC, for joining us in the challenge. Earlier, we also received participation from UITM, UTEM and KLIUC, but they had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances...i heard.

So, wonder who got into Finals? Yuppp:) Congratz, Rifdy from ENNF 103 section 11 - the judges truly love your ideas. Azali from UNIKL raised good concerns as well. Consolation prizes were given to Thava from TARC and Nuruddin from UNIKL. 2nd runner-up was Wan (UNITEN) with his lively and energetic performance. Ist runner-up was Arul from UKM. He explored a very critical and timely perspective in light of the theme.

And.....the champion this year is no other than Hemalan (UNITEN)...yupp:) He not only convinced, but also made a point to entertain the judges and audience with his cogent arguments and intellectually stimulating discussion..shared some fun and laughter as well....I'd say Hemalan has a very attractive oral style which is conversational and also, persuasive. Congratulations, dear:) You have definitely done a wonderful job.

Thanks to all our judges, of course. Their committment and expertise really helps to make the event a truly rewarding experience.

Preliminary & Semi-finals :
Mdm Hanani (Literature), Ms Evelyn (Communication & TESL), Pn Zue (Chief Judge).

Finals : Assoc. Prof. Dr Rosli (Computer Aided Instruction, Chief Judge),
Mr Hazizul (Leadership), Mdm Lily (TESL) ,Pn Zue (Group Comm & Persuasive Language).

To Vivek and all the committee members, you've all done a wonderful job. It's really not easy to organize an event as such, and I pray may you be rewarded accordingly for all your hard work, patience and enthusiasm. As for now, I know you must all be tired, yet contented:) Yupppp! Take a look at all the pictures we've taken and they will bring back the victorious experience we have all shared together in living up to this Public Speaking PASSION. I guess the pictures depict your spirit, people...

Hope to see all of you in the coming debates....and next year's public speaking competition.

Lastly, Heartiest Thots and Best Wishes from my lovely kids (Nadia, Farah & Emir) and I,

Pn Zue

a whole paragraph ??!! i gt blogged about in a whole paragraph!!! =D

haha...let me take u guys back some four years ago, i got registered into Pn. Zuraidah Ali's ENGF102 class, sure at time i can speak, but she was the one who really made me speak . I used to call her teacher, and she called me hema. hahaha, then when i asked her to call me hemalan, she said not until u stop calling me teacher. My first transition from school to uni lesson, a whipping of the mind. lol.

So time goes by, pn .zue, keeps giving EVERYONE chances, opportunity, special attention even, to groom one self in the art of speaking. I was one of the few who actually took to her guidance and allowed my self to be "molded" by the hands of a language genius. U might be thinking, ok, so many lecturers do that kinda messiah-ish work for their students? where's the icing on the cake ? what makes her different ?

Pn. zue, anyone who knows her will tell u this, she offers you something u dont really want to take up, you go in with a "no" answer, and end up saying "yes", unknowingly being convinced, and the best part, you're happy bout it. hahaha.... ma'am, you have a gift, [please don't go into politics, i heard they're looking for people to make THEM look convincing...hahhaha]

So i gt roped in to doing class presentations, group leadership, giving the leading role to others [empowering], debate, writing, public speaking and things on that frequency. The best part, she didn't say go win it, beat the rest, u better come home a winner or stuff like that. She says, take the experience, grow from it, groom your self, learn, explore, have FUN, and do it all with a smile, sure if you win, that's an added bonus. She once asked me to write a paper about public speaking, just for fun. So i did it, i realized she stared making me put my ideas into words. That was cool.
Like this blog, its all about putting ideas into words. Oratory, thinking and wrriting skills combined.

i took ENGF103, tech com with her and she really boost me. She smiles every time you're up on stage, and just gives that reassuring confidence that makes us want to perform better, for her.

So that's my short, incomplete and
so flawed appreciation for pn zue. One can write a book on her character and nature, =D

SO maa'am [teacher] haha... thanks so so much for always making me say yes, even when i planned on saying no, cause it all turned out better then i could ever expect.

My success is yours ma'am.

p/s : people out there, take up guidance under her, you're gonna shine.

Hi there Kak Zue, after reading about it, I think it's really my pleasure to be the judge for the semi round as i was surprised that it's enjoyable with speakers like Hemalan, Arul, Wan, Tava and I think most of them can be politicians but not the corrupted one of course. Especially what I got was the line "Ma'am, you're sexy", I started thinking, "Am I the one he is referring to?", goes on with lots of question marks in my head, asking myself, "Am I SEXY?" Wahahaha! It was funny though as no one ever call me sexy after all. Is it a rhetorical question?(chuckling) leaving me figuring it out for so long...Anyhow, it was fun and interesting to be a judge after all. Thanks for inviting anyway...Hope that we can have it early next year then. Cool!! ~peace : eveeriko~

Greetings,

This was a great pleasure for us to organize the 2nd UNITEN Public Speaking Competition. I'm very glad and relieved to know that you are all praises for the event.
Congrats to the speakers, all of you have been wonderful in presenting your ideas, although i wasn't available to hear most of them as i have to run back-and-forth.... The judges were kind enough to accept our invitation and gave a fair, firm verdict of the speakers....thank you....
And to the organizing committee, headed by Vivek, you guys showd great commitment and willing to sacrifice even weeks before the event, none more so than the program director himself. It has been a pleasure working with you guys.
This event , i hope, will be greater, more grand and more established as one of the highlight event of the malaysian debating/oratory calendar. and we surely need all the support we can get, one thing is for sure, pn zue's support, as always, will be paramount. thank you

Hi there ~smiling_reena~

Interesting idea. Doraemon has some kind of magical powers and can indeed shed a different light to this discussion. If Doraemon becomes President, what makes Nobita? Or perhaps someone with Doraemon characteristics will make the world a little better and fun, yeah...let's check it out:)
