National River Clean-up 10th July 2011

Do you know that our picnic-rivers are under threat? If you have enjoyed picnics by the river with family and friends, you may want to act NOW and conserve our watery wonders from dirty and stinky rubbish...in fact, the extent of pollution and deterioration of nature is beyond imagination.

Today, much of our natural beauty have perished at the hands of mankind. As layman,we regret having to witness tremendously horrifying destruction of Mother Nature, and continuous slaughter of our eco-system. Deliberating on these selfish actions is exasperating, and may go beyond our jurisdictions. So, let's identify opportunities to conserve nature at our own backyard, in our neighbourhood or some place where we can perform our responsibility as a concerned citizen.

At UNITEN, undergraduates are involved in diversed community service, and the most recent is National River Clean-up project in collaboration with KAGUM. A total of 87 staff and undergraduates joined the nation's call for conservation of our picnic-rivers. 4 KAGUM members provided the team with the necessary groundrules for river clean-up and joined us in clearing rubbish at the picnic site. Some rubbish are simply ridiculous; for example, who would need a cellphone charger by the river? Indeed we found 'just that' during our national river clean-up project on 10th July 2011.

Finally, we jumped into the river and connected with nature in ultimate bliss!! We pray may our picnic rivers remain this beautiful forever...Our volunteers collected a total of 618 kilos of rubbish from the site. In fact, several other voluntary groups have collected even heavier garbage... and this makes us wonder about the mentality of these litterbugs and selfish picnickers.

It's time to act and volunteer for river clean-up. For those who have participated in such activities, CONGRATULATIONS! The rivers are crying for our help! So, please share your experience with our readers in this blogosphere about your experience as a volunteer for any national river clean-up activtiy, and let's motivate others too.

It's us humans, who are so dependent on nature and it's valued natural resources, don't make the mistake of assuming that nature needs us for it's preservation, actually it's the human population whose survival throughout the history of existence was and still "will be" because of the generosity of nature, and we are repaying this generosity by unrestrained exploitation of natural resources and making the ecosystem unhabitable for the local species.

However, there are things that can be done to help the nature with the healing process and to restore the damage we've already caused, therefore such group activities are well received by pro environmental groups and I'm also sure that the local species will appreciate it, too!

Once upon a time in year 2020, your youngest daughter asked you, 'What is a river look like, Father?' At that time a river just a topic in a geography book, no longer available in this real world. How devastating it could be. A young Malaysian can no longer hear the stream of water from up above the rocky hills, the chirping sound of birds are missing in the mids of 'rocky jungle'.

This is why i joined the river clean-up activites as i believe by this way, more or less, i've done my small part in conserving what we inherited from our grandchildren.
I could not imagine how the human such as the picnickers who so called enjoying the breathtaking scenery at the river have the gut to do all the littering and bad thing. Yeah, they enjoy it but don't they want their grandchildren to enjoy it too?

Do your part, become a volunteer as the river, the mother nature we have now is not ours, It is the god's trust for the sake of our future grandchildren.

Most rivers in Malaysia are already heavily polluted, we don't want our picnic rivers to be polluted as well, do we?

Therefore, we should encourage the people to organize or participate in any river clean-up activity like this as a preventive measure for picnic rivers from being polluted. A polluted river has great potential of bringing harms to humans such as flood and diseases. Those picnickers also have to be more considerate and stop being selfish as picnic rivers are not the place where they should throw away their garbage around but a place where people relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.

It is actually the responsibility of each and every individual on this world to protect the nature after all. So, yea, keep it up with the good work.

I don't have any experience in river-cleaning-event, I mean the organized one. By the time I visit the blog, I would like to share a true story on what happened in my residential area and what factors that led to such circumstances.

Let me tell you briefly about my residential area; who knows you might have a picture of it. I live somewhere in Ipoh, Perak and my house is located in the valley area. Although I live in a modern housing area, there are some environments have not been explored such as the forest and also a river. Yeah, it's a river! Maybe some of you won't believe this. How come there's a river in a modern residential area? That's the fact as I live in valley area.

This river is so nice with crystal-clear water and good scenic view. It's full on weekend as the residents always go there to have a restful time and break. The place is good for picnic, swimming or even fishing.

Back to the year of 2009, there was a development of new residential area there. The developers had explored the forest to build bungalows on the land. Trees were cut down, slopes were flattened out. The moment they trimmed the slopes, all of the sand from the hills rushed down and went into the river. The clear water turned to be brownish because of the sand from the hills. The saddest moment was when the trimming of the slopes where excavators were doing their job in the river!

Below is the link of the picture of the moment when a worker was busy 'doing' his job:

http://yfrog.com/klrfudj

Do you guys see what happens to the river? Instead of crystal-clear water, the river turned to be a mud party. Water level became shallow and the worker parked the excavator in the river as nothing should be concerned there.

Just because of the development activity, environments had affected a lot: temperature was getting higher as the trees were cut down and the most terrible one was when a mud flood happened in my residential area when there was a heavy rain. Roads turned to be like off-road tracks with mud everywhere. Residents were busy cleaning their houses during that time and everyone was like, "Oh my God, what has happened?"

Complaints have been made to Jabatan Alam Sekitar regarding to this matter. We were facing environmental damages during the development. The development finished in the mid of 2010 and the environments started to become normal. Although the environments were recovering on that time, they took a long time to turn to their original states.

Today, the neighborhood of the new residential area can live peacefully by having natural views such as the greenery of the forest and the river flowing. I am pretty sure that they can have beautiful views from their bungalows.

By the way, I have attached a picture and I wish if all of them can have a glance on what had happened to the environment and the nature just because of fulfilling human's request. Let's be more concern on the nature before any disasters come across us. By the time, don't blame the Mother Nature ya.

In fact, while we preserve the environment we're in the same time maintaining our health and the health of the next generation.

My sentiment is exactly like Mohamad Farid commented, what would our future generations see when we ask them about rivers and natures. Malaysia was suppose to be THE place to go for these activities, heck we even boast about our nature to the world via our 'Malaysia truly Asia' campaign. But what about now?

A few internet search even revealed that our river are in class IV(polluted), which is just 1 class below Class V(heavily polluted). What would we be left is an image of 'Malaysia truly polluter'.

On my own experience, as i goes for hiking and jungle-trekking, mst of our rivers are still safe and all, even I can drink them as I swim. But for how long?

But all hope are not lost, as 100 polluters came, 100 more environmentalist also come forth, recently, even car manufacturer VOLKSWAGEN lend some helping hand.

When you see the river you have picnic is dirty, you would have the self-awareness to take care of the river

River is one of the nature valueble. We as human that always need the nature should be protect our neture from damage and dirty. If we could not protect the nature, who will be the protectore? Besides, if we as a human did not take care of our own nature, we might be harms by the river polition that created by human itself. Therefore, to make our river clean let us together take good care of it when we go for a picnic or we join any organization to help them clean back the river which are populated.

Sometimes I wonder why some people don't appreciate the treasure that has been given to them by Mother Nature.

I’m originally from Iran, in spite of fact my country offers one of the most diverse and breathtaking sceneries around the globe, nowadays Iran is facing severe water crisis and other environmental problems due to a decade-long drought. On the other hand Malaysia’s equatorial climate turned the land into a heaven on earth, and it’s sad to see that despite everything that is provided by nature people don’t hold themselves responsible to protect the environment.

Let me remind you that according to Water.Org “884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people.” Roughly 2,600 km from here, China’s Guizhou province is experiencing one of the worst droughts in 60 years while Somalia is devastated by one of the worst droughts that world has ever seen in a long time.

A great challenge lies ahead in preserving the environment but if we all join hands we can solve this issue.

HI,this is me Nassr.
I actually have heard of this activity, but unfortunately i didn't take the chance to clean-up our nature.

Even though we don't have Rivers at my country Oman, but we do have beaches and valleys, indeed they must be clean.

Doing that not just for the nature need but also it's one of the human requirements to have clean and healthy environment/World.

The matters now is when we ask ourselves as knowledge people and bright minds on this issues, why do some are careless about the Nature and they know that if they didn't keep the place clean how can they use it again...yah sure there are many place to go right!!!

To solve such this problems we should think about the raising generation and the future one...we must educate them about the matters of the CLEAN ENVIRONMENT. here then we have at least we have now more bright minds than before.

The river is nature that we should value and preserve. This pollution occurs it is due to the attitudes of people who have no moral awareness and responsibility for the cleanliness of the environment. Educate ourselves to be more concerned about the environment such as rivers are important to ensure that we live in a clean and healthy. Therefore, we should praise the attitude of each volunteer that have work to help clean up our rivers. all the garbage that pollutes the environment comes from waste caused by people. so, who should be blamed on the occurrence of this pollution? all this happened is because of our mistakes. Let us together to maintain the beauty of nature together.

Asalam Alikum ,
In the beginning that these beautiful places and natural is a big house for all of us this place for a large number of creatures that we see and not see it, we must keep it in beautiful and clean aera so all we can use this beautiful places.
For example, if we went to a picnic beside a river, and played and ate, and when we finished our picnic we left the place is not clean and full of rubbish and after that some people came after us and they did the same as what we did throw the rubbish ,not assembled in a specific place after few days the beautiful place will be full place with rubbish and we can not go to the same beautiful place and we have destroyed the beautiful environment that the God gave us.
We must preserve these places as it our home believe me,When the person feeling that this beautiful place is his own house he did not dumping garbage anywhere in the home but he put the garbage in specific place for that thing and all people do same thing inshaallah we keep our environment .
finally ,we should thank God that gave us these beautiful places and must keep it clean and beautiful.
Thank you .

unfortunately, i never got the chance to participate in such events, although i am welling to do so.
one might come across a very simple and basic question, why do we need to keep the nature clean? its not about the look only ,of course not, but life can vary in every meter square of nature from a visible animal to tiny micro-organisms that ,in one way or another, help in maintaining the harmony of ecosystem going, that provide abundance of resources to mankind and other creatures. these living creatures can be affected my modern civilization if not used carefully and responsibly by mankind.
concluding that, in order for mankind to benefit from what is given by nature, we need to take care of it and be responsible when dealing with it. not just for living, but more importantly, for quality living.

When i was 6 years old, my family and I used to go to picnic at river near Ampang every weekend. The place was so nice, they got very clean water and the place is complete with huts and a flying fox. After that I moved to Kedah for 4 years, and when I'm back to Ampang I found out that the river that I used to go is not the same place anymore. The place is polluted with rubbish, many of the public utilities destroyed and causes that place rarely visited by the people, just like 4 years ago. If we did not handle this situation from now on, the younger generation cannot enjoy the mother nature like we used to experience a long time ago. We have to appreciate and responsible to the environment, especially the river because who else is going to take care about our mother nature, if not us?

i have not attended or participated in any cleaning event, but if i have the chance to, i'm sure i would be the earlybirds in the list ! i love environment, i love the greens, i love listening to the water flow of the river! i will surely join the event organized :)

but nowadays, we can see that the rivers in our place are having some serious problems! just imagine, in 10 years time, how will the river look like? what will happen to out future sons and daughters ? the consequences of our fault will be borne by them all.

so, be aware, whenever you go for picnic, don't just simply throw your rubbish, if this is done by all the people came, the beach would instead be a sea of rubbish !

if ones want to built or do construction works, make sure all the legal procedures are followed well so that the environment will be protected from all the unwanted consequences. all the chemical waste must be thrown at the right place, not in the river or stream.

Most of us know that these threats exist and that humans have caused them. Many of us are very worried about the future of our planet and unless we can find a way of solving the problems we have made then the environment will suffer even more. So, the best way to protect our nature by recycling materials such as plastics, bottles and papers. Besides, as a human we need develop a good attitude so that our nature can be protected.

We get closer to our Mother Nature as we do even a small good deed like pick up a rubbish and throw it in the bin. But actually, we can always take part in preserving our environment everyday and everywhere. A reminder for me, and anyone who's been missing this opportunity before.. let us start now, collect at least a rubbish a day.

I have never been involved in any such activities, but as an individual,I do my very best as I can in caring for the nature. The way I see it, it doesn't have to take a group of people to start cleaning these places. If everybody has the urge of caring for the nature, these situations should not happen in the first place. I myself, loathe people who simply throw rubbish wherever they want to like on the grounds, especially out the windows of a car. Is it really hard for them to hold on to the rubbish until they find a rubbish bin?? Regarding the situation in the article, I find it very disturbing that people can just leave their rubbish and just walk away without feeling guilty. If everyone just cleans up after themselves, our nature wouldn't be perished and can be enjoyed for generations to come. It all begins in the heart :)

misken said...

That is a brilliant idea up there. I like it because is not just written words but words that are acted on. At times acting is better than talking. This makes people like me to realize how other people are serious about caring for the environment out there. One other thing we have to understand is that the environment is our life without it we cannot survive, looking at the food we eat even the air we breath is all about the environment if we pollute the environment and we don’t take action at the end of the day we as human beings we are the ones to suffer. Do you know that pollution interfere with our health and it is the reason why life expectancy is very low today?

So it’s high time we start acting against all the factors that pollutes our precious world because we as people we are making other living things like plants and animals to suffer .just imagine if the entire environment were to be polluted today do you think there will be tomorrow? Let’s start right where we are to conserve the environment so that there will be hope for the future.

Faisal Alasiri said...

well, I never took part in such activities but I would love to. In fact, Mother Nature is in danger because of pollution caused by human and if we dont take immediate action we may loose our home. Fortunately, there are good number of organizations who took the responsibility of taking care of the nature and our eco-system and they are doing a very good job to educate people and to preserve what is left of our nature. However, it is the responsibility of every individual on this earth to reduce the pollution and to maintain a clean and green environment that will remain for generations.

That's just unacceptable for those people that had been throwing almost everything into river, then what is the main intention of dustbin anyway if everything are being thrown into the river...

I'm pretty sure that almost every picnic river have a large amount of dustbin scattered all around the picnic area but why does those kind of people insist on throwing the rubbish into the river. Do they not saw the dustbin or they deliberately blinded themselves so that they can arrogantly throw the rubbish anywhere they like...

In my opinion, to change the behavior of these people, we firstly must think like them. Think about why do they throw rubbish into a peaceful yet beautiful river. Is it a habit or just simply a pleasure for them. When everything is sort out, then it is easier for us to protect our river not just for the sake of our planet but also for our future child and grandson so that they are able to enjoy what we have today...

Rivers are very important for human life because it serves as one of the basic needs of every living creature which is water for drinking. Our river is being polluted each day. This is starting to be a normal thing and many people are starting to not care. Saying this is ironic because I myself have never volunteered to specifically clean the river.

Looking back, I think the reason why many people do not participate in cleaning the river aside from being ignorant is the lack of awareness of the consequences.
Perhaps a campaign on the importance of keeping the river clean should be held to solve this problem.

I believe a lot of people actually do care about the environment and keeping the river clean, but they do not know where or how to help.

Hi Pn. Zue,

From what I have read, 618 kilos of rubbish, or even more truly dictates our community's current civil values. We are taught about cleanliness at a young age but that astonishing amount of rubbish does not reflect the best of our Malaysian understanding of ecological needs of preserving our beautiful mother nature. Imagine tourists coming and these unsightful scenes of rubbish are the 'attraction' that we have to offer. Campaigns and volunteer programs are good. Brilliant! if i may say so but for me, what we need to do is to change our community mindset. This problem won't be solve with mere clean-ups, (but it is a good start!) what Malaysia need is a change the culture. One individual nor 87 people cannot change what Malaysian used to do (littering), changes have to be made in a large number. The whole community have to change. For ecological sake, all of us need to change! Just saying as per se :P

if we look clearly at the heavy flood disaster years ago are usually from a river itself where it is polluted and caused by the instability of natural environments around it. For example, if people are to be responsible for the illegal tree logging near the river, it wouldn't have caused the soil to loose its grip on the ground and which then causes the river path being blocked by the soils and rubbish in the river. Everything happens for a reason, whenever there is a causes, there's always a consequences.

As a Malaysian, I am very proud of our country, not only because of its harmonious multiracial community but also because of the abundance of environmental wonders such as rivers and mountains which puts our country in the global league as one of the top holiday destination. However, these wonders are now under threat due to the irresponsible acts of human being. A very familiar example of such atrocities are the pollution of the river with chemical wastes and sewage. The rivers are polluted so badly that the fishes and the aquatic plants die gasping for air. The people who commit this crime do not know that someday their child might ask them "dad, what is a river". If we want to stop the damage from becoming more critical, we should take the necessary steps. We may not have to fold our pants and get into the river to clean it up but the least we could do is to help and support organizations and movements which are committed in keeping our national rivers clean. Lets give a hand and be proactive before its too late. Save our rivers.

Human always called themselves the superior being in the world, but is this the way they show their superiority? To prevent the nature from getting more loaded with garbage that do not belong there, that are brought by irresponsible people, and those who feel that they are responsible should take up the job to clear all this filth from Mother Nature. My friends and i carried out the project in a school, Jit Shin Secondary School, in Penang. Once we reached there, we embarked on the campaign by starting to collect the materials we needed to make the mudball like sand, enzyme and soil. Through this process, i found out that the right proportion of ingredients plays a crucial role in making the mudball. Pertaining to this, there was a worker who has done it before giving us some advices and ways to produce mudball.

The process of mixing the materials required a lot of manpower. Under the hot sun, we used the shovels to mix the materials. At the same time, there were groups of secondary students help to make the mudball in a round shape. Through sheer hard work and determination, we managed to make twenty thousand mudballs.

Besides, we taught the students about the ways in filtering the water. Indirectly, this will help to indoctrinate habits of loving the river among the students.

All in all, instead of sweeping the problems of water pollution under the carpet, we should face it squarely. Collaboration should be carried out by certain companies in order to preserve and conserve our mother nature for the sake of future generation.

When people think about Mother Nature, the images that appear in mind consist of is a forest full of trees and a river flowing with clean and fresh water. This shows the significance of the river in Mother Nature. Efforts in keeping rivers clean have been established but it has never really made an impact into the lives of people because people never really experienced the ‘sorrow’ felt by the river. The National River clean-up project is really an eye opener because people are directly involved in cleaning up the river. The participants of undergraduates especially from UNITEN really shows the care young people have for nature these days.
I was astonished by the amount and type of garbage collected. It really shows how inconsiderate people can be. This project has also showed me that people can take the effort to clean up the river and enjoy the best that nature can offer. Everybody wants to live in a clean environment and it’ll be a shame for the future generation to grow up not knowing of a clean river. – Relwin

One thing about such activities I would like to highlight is the initiative. It's a perfect reflection of the line 'Action speaks louder than words.' Many have said about how dirty our environment is getting and how much more it would be polluted. Very often too I have seen propagandas and advertisements that goes ‘Save our river’ and so on. The rhetorical question here is how many people have actually place their efforts in keeping the environment clean. At times I even wonder and doubt minds that came out with environment-saving kind of projects are even thinking for the good of the environment itself, or are they coming up with projects just for the sake of their selfish benefits. It is extremely hypocritical to me that propagandas and other forms of encouragement to save the environment are printed and pasted everywhere. On one hand we are trying to promote a clean environment, but on the other hand, we are cutting down more trees leaven lands barren to produce all these nonsense. To have joined activities like the National River Clean Up is definitely a good initiative, but I think even without participating in activities as such we can still contribute to keep the environment clean and safe. Simple things like preventing the wastage of papers, not littering into river and so on is more than enough in playing our part to keep the environment in good conditions. Participating in such activities is undeniably a better initiative, or perhaps an additional initiative I would say. It is at least better than taking actions that are merely for selfish benefits, which will eventually cause more harm than good without most people realizing it.

Rivers have always been important to human. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptian civilization and the Mesopotamian civilization flourished around great rivers like the Nile, the Euphrates and the Tigris. However, as usual, human never appreciate things that are given to them, in this case, river. We are polluting rivers and other water sources with our everyday activities like agricultural activities. Some people think that most rivers on Earth are so polluted that they are beyond ‘repair’. However, I think we are still not too late to preserve and conserve these beautiful rivers for the coming generations.
Personally, I have never participated in any river-cleaning campaigns or activities. In my opinion, the best and most efficient way to preserve rivers is through educating the public, especially the younger generation. The public should be taught about the consequences of deteriorating river conditions on them. Besides, stricter laws should be passed to punish those who pollute rivers, especially factories and big corporations. For example, a river in an African country (which I have forgotten) is turned red due to the excessive iron ore from a nearby mine. These companies should be made to pay millions or even billions of dollars of fine for their actions.
In short, preserving and conserving river is all about raising awareness and conscience in the public. I believe with these two factors, polluted rivers all over the world can be returned to their pristine conditions in the near future. Mother Nature is more resilient than we think she is, all she needs right now is just some support from mankind.

Malaysia’s rivers are indeed gift from god. You could see the cold blue water runs gracefully while hearing the birds chipper. Yes, indeed you can say that Malaysia’s rivers are picnicker’s heaven. However, some of these picnickers are irresponsible because they like to abandon their waste and garbage, ended up with someone has to clean up their garbage for them. This is unforgivable! They should treat nature nicely as like they treat human kind nicely. Malaysia’s rivers are very important not only because they act as our clean water’s source but the rivers also are the national’s treasure. It is understandable that many countries in this world don’t have good and beautiful rivers like we, Malaysian, have. But it is very cruel if we, who have the beautiful and clean rivers like what the other countries had been longing for, dirty our rivers just like they were nothing to us. We should indeed preserve our rivers even if it is not for us but at least remember that we still need to preserve it for the future generations so that they could know the true meaning of ‘clean and beautiful river.’

After reading the article regarding on National River Clean-Up, I think that more people nowadays are concerned about the problems of river pollution. In April 2012, my course mates and I were involved in a community service project which had almost the same concept with the National River Clean-up project, the MudBall Project in collaboration with MPSP. The aim of this project is to clean up our target river, Sungai Rambai in Bukit Mertajam, Penang and raise awareness of the secondary school students about the river pollution. We facilitated the secondary students from schools in Bukit Mertajam to mix and mold the EM Mud Balls which were used to clean the river. People might not know about Mud Ball. Mud Ball is a mixture of mud, enzyme and microorganism that is used to decompose the organic materials in the river. By using this approach, the river will be cleaned up in a more efficient way and indirectly, students will learn to appreciate and protect the resources of the Earth.
Before I took part in this project, I actually had known about the consequences of the river pollution, but I did not take any actions to save our rivers. From this project, I am glad to have this opportunity to contribute in saving one of the rivers in Malaysia. Everyone should play their part to conserve and preserve the rivers.

In recent years, uncontrolled human activities such as development of residential areas and construction of highways have occurred all over in Malaysia to meet the demand of people and nation. Pertaining this, our mother nature, including forests and river are being explored and eventually destroyed in such a rapid rate. Sometimes I wonder about why would people want to develop and modernize those lands regardless of any cost, including destroying our precious mother nature. Why can’t people understand the fact that we, human are actually depend on the nature to survive and live since the ancient time, not the nature depends on us to preserve and conserve it.

Therefore, although I never participate in any river cleaning activity, I strongly agree that cleaning rivers is indeed an efficacious way to help in undoing the pollution done by human beings. In this case, not only the government plays a vital role in preserving rivers, but the public do have a high responsibility in saving the rivers. The power and capability of a single person might be insufficient, but if all of 28 millions Malaysians combine their efforts in helping to conserve the river, it would definitely make an obvious and effective impact in saving the river. In short, I wish all of us could actually play our parts in saving our rivers so that the rivers would not disappear from the human history in the future.

I could not agree more that much of our natural beauty have perished at the hands of mankind, and I am aware that not only picnic rivers but also beaches are under threat. I support River Clean-up Project but I feel that this project should be held frequently, like monthly because I believe that only continuous cleaning up the rivers or beaches could actually preserve the nature. Some people maybe think that this action could not help much in restoring a clean rivers but I believe that it is the least we can do, as mankind, to hold the responsibility to preserve and conserve our rives.

I couldn’t imagine what will happen to the rivers and beaches after 10 years if we still do not want to put our effort in saving the rivers and beaches. So, let’s start right where we are to conserve the environment for a better future.

I have volunteered myself for a mud ball river cleaning project in April 2012. The purpose of the project was not just as simple as cleaning the river but to raise awareness among the students about the importance of keeping the river clean as well. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect our mother nature and participating actively in this kind of activities is the one of the ways to do it. I deem that the mud ball river cleaning project which has been organized in Jit Sin High School as one of the best because it aimed not only for short-term success but also for a bigger purpose, to educate the students. It is this kind of cleaning project that everyone should join because it can change our world towards the better.
Men and environment are inextricable. Harming the environment is similar to committing suicide. You have to save the environment if you do not intend to let your next generations suffer for what we did now. Imagine the beautiful sceneries of the rivers that all of us still can enjoy now. All of these will soon be destroyed unless everyone does something about it. You might think that you alone might not be enough to make any changes. Bear in mind that if everyone has the same mindset then the end of the environment will be imminent. However if everyone starts from doing it himself or herself, soon there will be hope to save our nature. Save our environment, start from doing it yourself and start doing it today.

Throughout these recent years, UNITEN has been carrying out many projects that deal with environment. The national river clean up was one of those projects that proved to be successful. The project was attended by many volunteers and a total of 618 kilos of garbage was collected during the clean up. This mind-blowing detail would leave us wondering how unscrupulous some people are when it comes to maintaining a clean environment. These people must be punished severely for the crime they have convicted. Nevertheless, I am proud that UNITEN have come up with this brilliant idea of cleaning up the river as it helps to create awareness among the public and remind them of the importance of rivers in our beautiful country. I believe that river clean-up projects must be carried out by every organization around Malaysia as it is crucial to maintain our rivers safe to maintain ecological balance. Not only that, many people that stay along the river bank relies on it as a source of income for their daily life. Imagine the deadly consequences if people consume fish that comes out of the polluted river. Therefore, I am proud to be a volunteer in these projects and look forward for these kinds of activity in the near future so that I can contribute for the well being of our society.

Truth be told, I have never participated in any of the national river cleanup activities, so I do not have any experience pertaining to the matter. However, about a month back I went to a river/waterfall in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan with the PPES juniors and a few of my friends. The reason I brought up this matter is because we faced a similar problem at the river/waterfall as some of us littered and dirtied the river/waterfall. Maybe they did not litter purposely or maybe they just forgot or maybe littering has become a subconcious act and they do it without thinking. A stern warning and advice from their friends and seniors quickly rectified the problem.

Thus, the act of keeping the environment clean and garbage-free, I believe, is an individual effort where every man needs to clean up after himself, and every lilliputian step we take will go a long way.

Wow! I’m so excited to read your article about National River Clean Up. It remind me back about the memory and experience when I went there last year. I was actually one of the volunteers. You had organised such a noble activities that contributed to nature. I’m sure those who had went there must feel the unease feeling when they saw the abundant of rubbish everywhere around the river. There was in one area of the river, I had pick up nappies. In my mind that time, ‘how could they just throw away this things in this public recreational area’. They should at least think about others if they can’t think for the goodness of nature. People who come to have a picnic with their families might feel uncomfortable to do so. Imagine we eat in the middle of the landfill! With the trashes everywhere, it really spoil the mood.
In short, I was really proud to be one of the volunteers to collect the rubbish. We managed to gather almost 620 kilos. It was a big success as we had put our best foot forward. With this continuous activities, I believe the nature can be conserve and preserve from being polluted.

In a state notorious for its pollution, you can hardly recognize a river as a river instead of a gargantuan drain. Such is the current scenario in Penang.

Of course, the impulse of cleaning up, the thought of stop littering, and whatnot have occurred to us Penangites, but when you truly witness the condition of these rivers, you'll have the propensity to think that they're beyond salvage. That's the general apathetic perception tinged with slight pessimism. What we need, not just in Penang but throughout the nation, is simply a goad, preferably initiated by the government. Volunteers and enthusiasts abound, but they need blazing motivation and a properly organized campaign, and those are the missing cards right now. Restoring the nature's beauty is definitely not an impossible feat, as long as the problem is acknowledged and addressed.

Assalamualaikum Pn Zue, first of all, on behalf of communities who didn’t join the program of cleaning river would like to thank you and your students because I think this initiative is very crucial in order to save environment especially the river. We can imagine that of course there will nobody will have the initiative and clean the river if you didn’t.
People, yes we can say mostly in Malaysia, they are really selfish and cannot be bothered actually. I am shocked when even phone charger also is left by irresponsible people. We can say that they have really bad mentality. It is really hilarious when 680 kilos of rubbish is collected. It is too much Pn Zue. I am sure there is still rubbish they threw it away and we don’t know where it is. It might flow with that water and it is located somewhere else.
For Uniten students, I am really proud of you guys since you care about the environment. God willing you will be rewarded from Allah because you guys with full of sincere help to clean the dying river. Actually, if I have a chance to clean the river like you had, for sure I will join as well. It is possible for me to do by my own. Credits to Pn Zue she encourages students and willingly organizes this meaningful program. The world really needs people like you guys!

All living things need water in order to survive. World civilization started in the area that have river. Nowadays, the river has been polluted by irresponsible people and they treat the river like a very huge waste container. If this situation keeps going on like this, the river might just vanish. In order to protect the river, events like this should be held continuously. This type of event can make a cleaner environment not only to our river but also to our country.
First and foremost, I want to state here that I was one of the participants in this National River Clean-up event. I have gained a very deep and unforgettable memory there. I experienced it myself by picking up the rubbish. I had seen how a very calm and wonderful river is being polluted by rubbish and like you said some of the rubbish is really ridiculous. We have found quite many electrical appliances which are really irrational because who would want to bring electrical appliances there.
When I was volunteering for that event, I felt angry and ashamed at the same time. I was really angry because there was a lot of rubbish that being thrown here and there by irresponsible people. What make me angrier is that more rubbish is found in places that close to the dustbin while the dustbin itself is empty. I also felt ashamed because Malaysian people who cause it and I am a Malaysian. I felt ashamed to live in the same country, breath the same air as these people. Everyone should have realized their responsibility to protect the river for the next generation. If rivers are not being protected, then rivers will just die and there will be no more rivers. Can you imagine earth without rivers or perhaps earth without sea?

Hang King said...

In this earth, about 96% of the water is salty sea water and another 3% is frozen in the polar ice-caps. Remaining one percent or even less are our rivers, lakes and underground streams that hold consumable fresh water. Yet, this tiny amount is to sustain the fresh water need for supporting the Earth’s trillion population. Freshwater is indeed a precious resource and the increasing pollutions of our rivers and lakes have caused alarming warning.
It seems that almost every day there is another story about pollution of one form or another, in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Very often our own actions lead to that pollution and in many cases we can do something about it.
I still remember the sweet memories that my parent and my teachers used to share about how they spent their childhood soaking themselves in the fresh clear sweet river water. They enjoyed themselves swimming in the cold water, splashing each other with the water, catching small fish or even prawns in the clear water and of course sometimes drinking the sweet tasted water to kill their thirst. Rivers and lakes are heavens and Disneyland for them.
But, now, what we have are dirty smelly rivers filled with rubbish and waste products. NO one even wants to take a look at them, not to mention coming near them. The rivers and lakes are getting shallower and shallower and its bottom is full with craps. The only living organisms inside the extremely polluted rivers are bacteria and virus. Once in a while, we may find a fish but it will only be a tiny little fish suffering from little food and being covered with pus or red spots due to the unsuitable environment.
Seriously, we should start to think about our polluted rivers. When sampling polluted water, simple precautions must be taken to avoid getting infected. Packed lunches should be eaten before visiting the river or after washing carefully in a supply of clean water. Rubber gloves should be worn and all the equipment should be thoroughly washed at the end of the investigation. This is not the kind of rivers we want. What we want is a clean clear river that we can swim in it , see its bottom and drink it when we are thirsty. Our planet is dying. We need to help it change for the better and we're asking for your help to do that! There are a lot of things that affect our planet in a bad way but the good news is that everyone can help to reduce them and do their bit for the environment. So, let’s start today. You can make our earth a better one!

Hi, Pn Zue. I am Pei Han.

People in Malaysia have a common bad habit, which is littering in anywhere. This bad habit actually brings negative impacts to our beauty of the nature, especially to the rivers. The closest real life example for me is the Kinta River in Perak state. Every time when I pass by this river, I will feel guilty and upset because of the scenario that appears in front of my eyes. I will see a lot of garbage floating on the surface of river. This situation is created by us, the people who do not concern about the rivers.

For me, I believe that this activity, national river clean-up is an alternative to solve this critical problem. It can help to increase people’s awareness towards the issue of river pollutions. People will have the opportunity to clean up their ‘unintentionally work done’. Besides that, a cleaner river will be produced through this event. It also helps to turn the destroyed nature into attractive and comfortable places for us to enjoy.

Lastly, I hope that I will have an opportunity to take part in this meaningful activity.

Rivers have been extremely important to human’s lives since the prehistoric era. Even now in the modern days, rivers are still closely related to our lives. Therefore, it is extremely sad to see how people nowadays take it for granted and think that no matter what happens to the river, clean water will still come out from the tap. Personally I think that activities like National River Clean-up should be encouraged and more of its kind should be organized. Although it seems the project just involved a group of concerned people cleaning up the river, I think the bigger purpose behind this project is to serve as a reminder to others about the degree of pollution in our once clean river and to send the message that every single one of us bears the responsibility to protect Mother Nature.

If there was a time to save Mother Earth, that time is now. If there was a time to come together with the bonds of nationhood, that time is now. If there was a time to stop wake up and realize the destruction that human beings are committing to the environment, that time is now. Mother Earth is dying a slow death and it’s because her veins are being poisoned by all sorts of heinous toxins and chemicals. The rivers which are the source of life for many organisms have continuously become a victim of human greed and capitalism.
There is definitely a dire need to save these rivers within status quo. The rivers are polluted so badly that the fishes and the aquatic plants die gasping for air. If we want to stop the damage from becoming more critical, we should take necessary steps to save our rivers. It’s not necessary for us to enter a river ourselves and start picking up trash. It is sufficient that we rid ourselves of the apathetic mentality that continues to plague Malaysians and start to support organizations and movements which seek to save the environment. Let’s work together to save our rivers.

Water is vital in our daily lives. Mankind can live 30 days without food but will only survive for 7 days without water. This fact shows that how crucial water to our daily lives and thus, it is our own responsibility to maintain the cleanliness of our precious water. Can we imagine a world without water? Or to be worst, there is water but we can’t use it due to the pollution of the water? Pollution nowadays spread endlessly without showing any sign of stopping or even slowing down. What can water pollution affect us is most frightening because we use water every day and every seconds, people use water in the world. According to some researchers from Cornell Universities, water pollution can harm us in two different ways that is directly or indirectly. Direct effects occur when we drink or taking bath using the water and indirect effects comes when we eat something that cooked using water or eating vegetables that irrigated with contaminated water. The effects are too many and the benefits are none. One effect that I wanted to share is about the polluted water is the breeding ground of the silent killer. In fact, one until three million people was found dead because of this heartless silent killer each year. This silent killer or malaria-carryings mosquitoes will be the biggest thread to us when all the water in the world is polluted. Imagine, 2/3 of the earth is water and all these parts are the homes for this murderer. Humans will be outnumbered and the era of mankind will be perished. Now, do we really wanted to be a person who be killed with those small things? So I do really think that these activities such as river-cleaning day are a very good examples to educate the world and there is some improvements in this activity that I think can be added to make the activities be very beneficial. For instance, we can do these activities together with school children because we know that as a students in some universities, we can’t educates people older than us but we do really can show great examples to the younger. The fact that younger generation are the one who will inherited the world from us will never change and thus, they need to know what they must do to ensure their future is promising by not living and share the earth with the tiny silent killer.

In this 21st century of today, our technology advanced at its fastest pace towards the future, and at the same time, our beloved Mother Nature suffered a series of illnesses such as various pollutions, climate changes, global warming, earthquakes, floods…All these illnesses will further deteriorate the health of people in the world. However, it is disheartening to note that people are still not aware of the polluted environment. They still have the conventional mindsets that their little actions will not contribute much to the total pollutions available in the world. Because of the presence of individualism inside their heart, our Mother Nature is now undergoing the process of decaying. For instances, the polluted river will have an adverse effects on humans. It will spread various diseases to humans, cause the death of the animals inside the river, and subsequently become the dumping site.
In order to save our Mother Nature, various volunteering activities had been carried out for the past few years. The prime objective of these activities is to raise awareness of people in the world about the importance of protecting the Earth. By having these activities, we can gather all the people around and clean up the polluted environment together because unity is the strength. With all the little efforts, we can actually make our world a better place to live. Let’s participate in these volunteering activities and work together to make our beloved Mother Nature a cleaner and fresher place to live.
Think of our next generations, every little action from us will make a big difference in future.

It is really great for having such activity in UNITEN. Although people’s awareness toward the environmental conservation is higher as compared to those in the last decade, the practices of 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) have yet assimilated into our daily life. Some people still could not get rid of the bad habit of throwing rubbish anywhere but the rubbish bin. This is extremely sad and disappointing.
However, seeing this post of national river clean-up activity, I am encouraged and intrigued. With more and more such activities take place in our beloved country, people of the country will for sure become more and more aware of the importance of environmental conservation and preservation. This indeed lays the most crucial key in returning the bounty beauty to the nature. I wish that this kind of activity will ensue in the future. Hopefully in the future I have this kind of wonderful opportunities to take part in such a brilliant activity.

Hearing about this national river clean-up project, I personally sense the presence of caring and concern of Malaysian young people towards our mother nature. I believe there was more than this group of 87 Unitenian out there in this community who participated in the similar river cleaning project on the same time, which again made me feel relieve.
Tons of garbage that were recovered from the river was the result of unethical littering habits. Young people nowadays should be reminded on the harmful consequences of the river pollution. River’s creatures, microorganisms and seaweeds die off after the drastic increase of water toxicity. River life does not have the chance to revive unless people interrupt to recover them.
People need to realize that majority of the home-use water comes from the rivers too. As the water source is being poisoned or bad treated, people stand a higher chance of developing health related diseases as well. Just like people in developed country, Malaysian people have to step forward by offering a hand to save the river from being deeply polluted. For the health of our next generation, let us stop littering and clean the polluted rivers together.

Everyone needs nature to live. As a human being, I honestly don't understand why people want to destroy it or never appreciate it. Nature has served us many things for thousands years and yet is this how we treated it? I used to study at a primary school in a rural area. During Standard 5, my class is besides a small forest with a light river in it. I always went there during second recess and I love it. As time went by, the amount of water passes through it become lesser until at one point, there was no water anymore. I feel sad and angry. Now, imagine that one day, we go back to the river where we used to picnic at and we find that there is no river anymore or the river is so polluted that the view is a sore to the eyes. So, let us start acting to not regret it in the future.

Forthrightly, I have no experience in any organized river cleaning program. However, my neighboring class, Section 3 (I am from section 2), has organized a river cleaning project and it is called ‘The Mudball Project’. The mudball is a ball which is made from mud, just as it name. These mudballs will be placed into any river and water will eventually erode the mudball, releasing the enzymes inside. These enzymes are capable of cleaning the river in a way of clotting the unnecessary impurities inside the river, making the river clearer. For Section 3’s project, they made the mudballs by themselves. The process is quite simple actually. They mixed the mud with some sort of special enzyme in a fixed ratio. When the mixture is mixed equally, the mixture is then shaped in sphere, in ball-like form. The balls were then dried under the heat of sun. When they are completely dried and become hard, there you are – the Mudball. This project was done at a river somewhere in Penang. And now, I believe that the river’s condition is better.
Thank you Section 3 :D

Assalamualaikum Puan Zue,

Once I read about this post, I feel like human are most likely trying to kill its own habitat name "home". river contributes to us as a living creatures in such many ways. it is now the time for us to give back to the nature a 'help' that they deserved it.

what kind of 'help' that we should give? well, actually it all depend on us on how to give back to nature. by doing National River Clean-up program for example, it will show to the nature that we thanks to them the gift that they give to us.

if we want our next generation to see what is actually nature and river is, then we should start to keep it clean from those rubbish..

Dear Puan Zue

I really like this topic because I have attended a national river clean-up last year and It was a great experience. one day my friend told me about a river clean-up around my place.I thought, This is a chance to help out and become active in cleaning up my environment. So I got up a bit earlier to give a helping hand. When we got there, one of the project leaders put us to work right away. I was surprised to find that we were not only given a bag, but also a piece of paper to record everything we put in the bag. I figured this was for statistical purposes. Surprisingly, the most abundant article of trash we picked up was a small, but important part of our day-to-day lives. It was a bottle cap. We must have found over 200 plastic bottle caps. Some other, more interesting items we found were a burlap bag and a strange piece of metal. We never did find out its use.
The morning was very productive and made me feel like I had done something positive. I know what you're thinking: How much fun could picking up trash on a Saturday morning be? I had a really good time. When it was over, I was proud of myself for being an active environmentalist. I strongly recommend giving up a few hours of your time to your community. It leaves you with a genuinely satisfied feeling.
Now it's been a while that I did not do anything good for my environment. there were an event in Uniten last 2 weeks about gathering papers from Uniten hostels , I registered but I could not attend it. I do like to get a chance to go for river clean-up again. I do appreciate you if you update me about such events.
There always exist some minuets in our life to help our environment live longer.so don't be lazy, move your legs and do something good for your environment.

River contains sea lives, as an environment contains humans and animal lives. We consume sea lives every day so it’s our duty to keep them healthy because they contribute to our health. So the question is why the human race destroys MOTHER NATURE? People should limit the usage of chemicals such as fertilizers, oven, and bathroom cleaners or car oils because everything that we use at home goes directly to the river, suffocates the lives and creates water pollution. People should stop throwing rubbish on water drains. However, the government must create a big organization and hire people to keep the river clean and stop inducers of river pollution because we cannot survive as second without MOTHER NATURE :)

Civic is always important to ourselves because if we have that kind of attitude, then the environment will survive till the end of its life.

Let me give an example, Sagil was located at Tangkak, Johor Bahru . Sagil is a waterfall place. Nowadays, Sagil is full with rubbish and not suitable for any picnic or vacation any more. For me, if everybody knows about their responsibility, river pollution will not happen. Trust me, moral value and civic should nurture among student. We as a Malaysian also should take care of our river because, it is an attraction for our country. Last but not least, we still not too late to gather clean up for our lovely river :) .. thank you.

It’s good to leave the hectic city and go to the nature place to relax your mind.

I don’t have any experience in cleaning the river. The only river comes to my mind after I read this post is Sungai Tekala at Semenyih, Selangor. First time I went to the Sg. Tekala was few years back, together with some friends in treasure hunt activity where one of the stations is at Sg. Tekala. The place was nice, not much rubbish in the river and the nature water fall was so icy cold. Many families were having picnic at the shelters, many naked kids, and I guess they did pee in the river. Normal kids will do right? When we leave, I saw many cans and plastic bags left at the shelters. Well, this is human bad habit. Human is lazy to throw the rubbish into the dustbin although there are many dustbins nearby the shelter, because this is not their homes. When we are at our own homes, we always keep our places clean and hygiene to be healthy. On the other hand, when we are at outside, we do not care where is the dustbin and just let the rubbish left on the floor. Everyone has the responsible to keep every place clean. Please allow me to share a good habit applied on a foreigner. I saw a foreigner in a fast food restaurant, he placed the plastic cover and the tray into the dustbin provided although there are cleaners in the restaurant.

Wherever we are, we shall keep our Mother Earth clean. ❤

I would say that most of the rivers in Malaysia are already polluted by human being. This is because the wastes from factories or the rubbish thrown by those who not civic-minded. I remember the old times, the kids used to play near the river and even bath in the river! But now, it is impossible to see this again due to the dirtiness of the river.
What can we do to this? River clean-up may help to keep the rivers clean. It might couldn’t back to as clean as it used to be, at least we try our best to clean it.
For my opinion, the most important is stop throwing the rubbish into the river! Just like Madam Zue mentioned in the post, they collected a total of 618 kilos of rubbish from the site. Can you imagine that, how many people thrown the rubbish into the river? It’s sad to say that there are a lot not civic-minded people in Malaysia.
Stop throwing the rubbish into the river. Please concern about our mother nature! Let’s save our mother nature together.

Credits to Pn Zue. She encourages students and willingly organizes this meaningful program. The world really needs people like you guys!

Nature is one vital aspects in our life that often been disregard. Such devastating moment to see a whole lot of skyscrapers standing up high but at the same time destroying the natures proportion bit by bit. If this kept on going, what’s left for the young generation to see?

Holding activities such as the National River Clean-up is one way to start encouraging people and start making them realized that they couldn’t possibly live without the presence of nature. We rely so much on them without us realizing it. For example, without water, are we able to survive? Without oxygen being produced by the green living, are we able to breathe? Certainly not. So, why do we recklessly destroys them when they play such vital role in our life?

Keeping the nature clean is in fact, our responsibilities. So, let’s try our best to preserve the nature for the sake of not only the future generation but also for ourselves.

A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another stream is the definition given by the internet for the word “river”. However to me it’s simply a God creation to our six senses. Yes, we can see the crystal colour water, the gushing sound of the water that we can hear, we can feel the cool water, the aroma of the green nature and for those who are thirsty, and it serves the best cooling water.

The river that had always been since ages never waged us any shortcoming. ‘It’ was always there to serve us the best. Desolately according to Malaysian’s Environment Ministry, the rivers in Malaysia are under threat of pollution. What surprises me is that those days’ people were uneducated and uncivilized; they took a very good care of the river, but now when people are educated and highly civilized, the government and non government organizations need to educate the public on how to “love and appreciate” the river.

A dirty river will not only be an eye sore but also decreases the good name of the place, the people and their attitude that surrounds the river location. This will also impact on the national tourism. Polluted river also affects the nature’s cycle because rivers carry water and nutrients to areas all around the earth. They play a very important part in the water cycle, acting as drainage channels for surface water. Therefore when one part of cycle if affected, the whole cycle will be affected.

A round of applause to university, college, public, and private organizations that organize river cleanup projects where volunteers get into the river and clean it. This is the group that took a revolutionary step because rather than pointing fingers and blaming different parties and finding who is to be blamed for all the pollution cause, they dared to do the cleaning on their own.

Cleaning a river by removing the rubbish thrown and to perform the water treatment takes time and need sacrifice of time, however when a bunch of friends are together in it, everything becomes easier and full of enjoyment. It must be a tiring one, yet I believe the volunteers will lie down on their bed at the end of the day with a smile that is full of satisfaction. After all they had played the role of a beautiful little angel of God that helped the Almighty God to take a good care of the god’s creation. If only the river could sing it will sing thank you to these angels. My only wish is to be a volunteer one day to do this little thing for the nature that had always given its best to me. I’m just waiting for my time to perform my “appreciation” to Mother Nature.

A healthy river and surrounding forests can act as a natural water filter, reducing the need to treat the water with chemicals or expensive filtration systems. By protecting and restoring rivers, we are protecting clean drinking water, creating jobs and recreation opportunities that benefit our economy, and revitalizing our natural heritage for future generations.

As individuals, we can all take steps to protect the rivers, creeks and lakes that are near us. We can take specific actions to reduce pollution and harm such as keeping litter and debris out of the water, avoiding over fertilizing our lawns, not wasting water and taking many other common-sense actions daily. However, if our water resources are to be protected and preserved for future generations, a concerted and coordinated effort by individuals, as well as federal, state, regional and local governmental agencies, is essential.

Several governmental agencies share the responsibility for protecting our water resources and engage in a number of activities to address the water resource issues facing our region. Managing our water resources involves the challenge of balancing varying water uses and demands with availability. Conflicting priorities often must be addressed to ensure that there are sufficient water supplies for human needs while maintaining water quality and viable, functioning natural systems.

National river clean up is a great charity work where we can spend our time to clean up the polluted river and can enhance our relationship with others. In Malaysia, there are a lot of waterfall, rivers, and pond that have their natural beauty. Unfortunately, most of them are polluted by human activities. People’s bad habit is that when finished picnic or whatever activities that done, they will just leave behind the rubbish and does not clean up. This is why we need cleanup campaign.
Last month, i went Sungai Gabai waterfall with some friends of mine. It is quite a famous waterfall where family have their weekend there. Firstly, I though there must be very nice and clean but my though was all wrong. The rubbish were everywhere around the changing room. The worst part is that those changing room are abandon. There is no light or water supply. It is kinda a haunted place.
In UNITEN, Pn. Zue had just organized a river cleaning campaign in K.Selangor. This is a pretty good event whereby student can loiter their free time during weekend in this campaign. In this campaign, students can help to save the mother earth and at the same time can enhance the relationship between your friends.
To draw the curtain, I think river cleaning campaign is a charity work where volunteers can participate in to help save the sick mother earth.

Yes, we need to act right now to conserve nature in future. But unfortunately not everybody understands that and this is a global problem today. To solve it, in my opinion, governments and any other agencies should let people know, inform them about problems more, organize such kind of activities to inspire people. Everyone must care about the environment and take all possible measures to clean up the nature, for example sorting the rubbish, not throwing garbage anywhere, saving water and electricity. Even it seems a little effort, it can save our environment.

Contamination of nature is very relevant today. Issues related to the pollution of nature, regarded in Europe very often.

Previously, people did not think about environmental pollution, but now spends a lot of money to restore the former beauty of nature. Particularly concerned about the nature of Europe. Thanks conducted its activities in Europe have practically ceased to fall as acid rain, while in other countries, this problem has not yet been resolved.

To prevent pollution of the environment, it is necessary to cooperate in this regard to all countries. If a country will take care of the environment, and the other not, is not much sense of it will not.

Taking care of nature, must be laid in the minds of society, therefore, is at an early age is so important to educate children in this direction. The younger generation, it is necessary to talk about what you need to take care of nature, because without nature people will die.

Taking care of nature, we take care of themselves, their health, their beauty. Our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-grandchildren also want to breathe clean air, drink clean water, to enjoy its beauty. And we have no right to deprive her of this possibility.

the river indeed important to our nature, if we look back when we just a child, a river means fun time for all of us, where our family will gather and have a picnic there while playing with the fresh river water. it was lot of fun back then. But nowadays not all river that we used to go were taken care like how they supposed to. The condition is getting worst due to the development of human. I am not suggestion that development is bad, but the development itself must synchronize with the preservation of the nature that we live in. Without the balance of the nature, its not impossible if one day suddenly the mother nature will act violently against us. So for me, these kind of event is very good to educate ourselves to preserve the nature.

River is a great place to soothe the soul with peaceful and calm with natural environment.

but it became increasingly stained by the garbage being dumped by people who were irresponsible and will love this natural beauty. although I have never participated in community service activities that do the cleaning and restoration of rivers that have been soiled by the garbage, I will not even contaminate rivers such as the human beings are not responsible for it to do.

But with the river clean up activities, cleanliness and beauty of this river can be preserved and protected against further damaged by humans. I hope that I can participate in clean up this river in the future if there is space.

River clean-up indeed is a splendid and meaningful activity. I never involve in cleaning up river but I do have experienced in cleaning up the beach. Either beach or river, both are also under threat and suffering from sickness. We as the resident of this earth should play a part in taking care of our mother earth. It is a gift from God and we are accountable to protect the nature. I adore nature especially when I can listen to the stream flowing sound and is surrounded by trees! I can feel the nature is drawing close to me and feel so peaceful! Unfortunately, rivers are polluted and deforestation activities never cease. Who’s fault? Human are destroying the future of the next generation. I’m afraid that in the future, our children couldn’t find a natural river or beaches. They might be playing in the man-made river or beaches! How pathetic if this really happen! =(
Therefore, we should take action to rescue our mother nature! Thank God, the picnic-rivers in my hometown still in good condition and I still can see crystal clear water! I hope that I have the opportunity to participate in this river clean-up activity one day. I wish to play my part in taking care this lovely earth as well =)

Well i never got involved in any river clean-up activity. But I did witness one a couple of years ago. Batu Feringgi one of the most revered beach in Penang was the place of the agenda. Thousands of volunteers helped to clean-up the beach by collecting garbage and throwing mud-ball into the sea. The mud-balls were actually made up of some sort of organisms that apparently can 'devour' all the bacteria found in the sea water.
I only watched the activity briefly. If in the future there were to be such activity, I would definitely join it!

Nowadays, the state of nature is very poor. The most of people do not care about cleanness of river and nature. The garbage has a direct impact to deteriorate the flowers and trees by chemical elements. And if it continues in the same spirit then at future on earth will be nothing. That is why from right now we have to teach our future generation about importance of environment. And I offer it will be better if one time per six month all people over the world make such activity by cleaning the river, and all natures.

As we all know, rivers provide some of our most magnificient and most threatened natural environments. Whether you enjoy clear and clean water rafting down a wild, clear mountain river or drifting peacefully on a slow, gentler river, rivers give us places to enjoy nature.

Unfortunantely, rivers encounter pollution from many sources, and that is farming, industry and even tourism. It is important to protect our rivers from pollution in order to save them for today and future generations.

Last year I’ve been participate in the river clean up for one of our courses, where we need to clean along the Selangor River. Our team was very excited about being involved in such a worthwhile effort that supports local communities. River cleanups help us to understand how our actions affect our watersheds. Much of the trash we removed was trash we can eliminate altogether or recycle and disposable garbage like plastic bags, plastic bottles, and food wrappers. If we clean up our habits, we can clean up our watersheds. This National River Cleanup and others like it, help communities witness firsthand both the positive and negative effects humans have on their local rivers.

National River Cleanup gather many volunteers to participate in locally organized river cleanups around the country throughout the year. River clean ups are usually sponsored by local organizers to clean ups and remove tons of waste from the selected river thay the choosed to clean up. One and all of them stand together to achieve their goal to have a clean river. Getting all the volunteers to involved in a planned local river clean up, or organizing your own clean up for your volunteer, is a wonderful way to teach our volunteers a greater appreciation for our communities’ rivers, raise their awareness about where litter ends up while also getting our volunteers out to enjoy some time outdoors on the river.

God created the world and the nature around us and should praise them until we achieve the utility. Praise does not come only for proper interaction with the environment and conserve its water, earth ,sky and sea.
Unfortunately, however, we see on the ground that we are not dealing with the environment in which we live in the same manner in which we live inside our homes Many have dealt with street for example like the place is completely isolated from their daily lives and with beaches like strange places they are not included in the circle of interest. Hence the problem environmental pollution and waste and other waste.

We as individuals we creating in this pollution where you often see a citizen riding in a car and then aimed Tissue paper and cans of juice without shame in front of others.

Most surprisingly, the Muslim community is required to preserve the environment and also will be rewarded for it, removing harm from the road is a charity and hygiene is the slogan of the Muslim community how can we leave this divine guidance.

I think that it requires us to intensify the efforts of environmental awareness among the community as well as the intensification of the curriculum, which refers to the need to maintain hygiene in addition to the necessity of accelerating the concerned authorities to provide support.
Hygiene is a right for all and everyone should bear the responsibility of preserving the environment.

River plays a major role in aquatic ecosystem. A clean river will be a great habitat for aquatic animals. Many people think that pollution to the river has nothing to do with their life. However, they forgot where they obtain their clean water supply. As a human, we must take care of the river as we are given a brain which makes us the smartest being in the world. We can't expect another creature comes by and take care the river as they don't have the capability to do so. Humans are given intelligence and special capability to protect our dearest mother nature who provide us everything for us to survive in this planet. Therefore, we should be thankful by protecting our Earth, not destroying it.

Assalamualaikum Puan Zue,
Actually i never done river cleaning yet, if i get any opportunity i will surely join it.For me river is a heart of our country. Some says mother of nature. For the country that did not have beaches and sea, the river is the main source for them to supply the water.Other than that the river is the habitat for the flora and animals to survive. We always heard about river pollution since we were small. River like Kelang River, Sungai Tukang Batu and Sungai Buloh always be the top most polluted river in Malaysia. All these happen because of human habit. They want the easiest way to throw their wastes even though the government already provides the rubbish bin and etc. As i stated above river not only contain rubbish and waste only but also contain hazardous thing such as chemical waste that is really dangerous not only river but we as a human also. So, i think the cleaning river event must be done frequently, maybe once in a month? All these happen because of human, so human is responsible to "repair" back what they have done.
Thanks...

Back in 2006, I joined a Non-Government Organization club called “Tamil Foundation Organization”. This club established in 2001 where the head office located near Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur. The mission of this club is to educate primary school children to preserve Mother Nature beauty to the upcoming generation. Once a month this club will volunteer themselves and bring up students from the nearest school to the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) which is situated near Kepong. Normally this trip will be organized on weekends which take 2 days and 1 night stay at FRIM.

There will be several activities will be held during the trip. One of them is river cleaning at FRIM hill station. We will give them certain time and a plastic bag to clean up rubbish and leaves left over by rain near the river. At the same time we will join them together to lead them and prevent them from any unintentional consequences. After finish up cleaning, we will give them a bag filled with fresh water fishes to be left into the river. This is to increase and preserve the fish population in the river. After two days of trip, the students will be aware on preserving nature and its beauty and at the same time they will share their experiences with their friends and families. This is how we spread the awareness on cleaning up the river to safe tomorrow’s generation.

What i mean 'feeling' here is to feel love to other living thing and of course to our earth. As we all know in Malaysia, we have trouble to get a clean river. every river will be full with trash and the colour of the water also changed! Assalamualaikum, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri maam :)
National River Cleaning is one way to preserve our river. Due to the effect of technology development, human had changed the surroundings of river to tourism center, hydroelectric generator, mineral quarried, and others. This may varied the functions of river and progress mankind's level indirectly but also gives negative effect to the river which is rubbish and trash became one of problem affecting the river. In positive way, outcome of tourism at river and nearby it has established new opportunities of occupation besides given advantages to our country by getting exchanges of foreign notes when foreign tourists visiting our country that have same environment such as Indonesia, Thailand and others.
Apart from these, river also can generate electricity by the useful of hydroelectric generator enables to keep clean water sources to be used by Malaysians especially when the progress of occupants getting more obvious rather than having electric energy. As I know, Malaysia is predicted to have owned for about 60 dams around the nation.
Due to the discovery of Mother Nature also river have many mineral sources found there. Tin ore has become main mineral sources since the early formation of Malaysia that attract colonialist such as British to conquer the Malay's land. That why we must take good care of our Mother Nature especially the source that gives important value such as the river gives us water. Thank you.

Healthy rivers provide major benefits like clean drinking water, wildlife habitat, and recreation opportunities. Unfortunately, millions of tons of trash – including plastic bags, old tires, and large appliances – end up in our rivers and streams each year.
National River Cleanup provides an excellent way for people to improve river health and give back to their communities.
Rivers connect us to each other, to nature, and to future generations. It is wonderful to see so many people across the country taking action to protect and restore their rivers and clean water.
so Why hold a river cleanup?
Protect clean water, Provide safer recreational opportunities, Create educational opportunities for volunteers on local river issues ,Beautify the community and increase property values and Inspire action and build community involvement in river protection.

Rivers have been very useful to human in all parts of the earth since very early times. They provide water to slake the thirst of human, to fertilize their lands and to provide a means of communication for the goods that transport from place to place. Boats or rafts were used to travel from one end of a river to another. In the same way, goods were also transported. With the transport of goods and the contacts of people between different parts of the same river, there were also many cultural exchanges. Thus, rivers helped to spread civilization. Today, rivers continue to be used not only as a source of water for drinking and fertilizing the lands or as a means of transport but also as a source of electricity which has revolutionized society. In a nutshell river plays an important role in our life which is being ignored by everyone.

Every time there is a heavy downpour in the Kuala Lumpur city, all the traffic comes to a standstill. Why? Because most of the places will be flooded due to the overflow from either clogged drainage or river.
What would be the problem? The problem lies with us, the people, and not the river, drainage system or the municipal council or city hall.
In many cases, rivers and drains are dumping grounds for rubbish etc. Over time, they become clogged and cannot be cleared in time. This act is done without any regards for the consequences later on, by litterbug and selfish picnickers.
We should refrain from taking the easy way out. Let’s try to make our rivers clean again, and to keep the drainage system clear of any obstacles. As the saying goes, “A journey of thousands mile starts with a single step”, we should start the practice by ourselves rather than expecting some one to initiate it.

Rivers are one of Mother Nature’s beautiful treasures. The river provides clean and healthy water for the communities and also the habitat for some of the wildlife. People often go for picnics, swimming, water recreational games and camp along the river.
When I was a child, my parents often bring me and my siblings to recreational places where the rivers are so tempting to jump in. Other than recreational purposes, they are also important to many industries.
However, rivers are negatively impacted nowadays by the activities of man himself who were supposed to preserve the nature. The rivers are threatened more today than any other time.
We as a responsible community should protect and restore the rivers. We have to choose our attitude towards preserving Mother Nature’s treasure so our children in the future will have the chance to see and feel the nature of our rivers.

unfortunately, i never got the chance to participate in such events, although i am welling to do so.
one might come across a very simple and basic question, why do we need to keep the nature clean? its not about the look only ,of course not, but life can vary in every meter square of nature from a visible animal to tiny micro-organisms that ,in one way or another, help in maintaining the harmony of ecosystem going, that provide abundance of resources to mankind and other creatures. these living creatures can be affected my modern civilization if not used carefully and responsibly by mankind.
concluding that, in order for mankind to benefit from what is given by nature, we need to take care of it and be responsible when dealing with it. not just for living, but more importantly, for quality living.

picnic is a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors, ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake or with an interesting view and
possibly at a public event such as before an open air theatre performance, and usually in summer. i think most of people's hobbies are going to picnic and have enjoyable
moment with family, friend or everyone else but as we know nowadays that many people are not responsible for their doing. they are not really care, same goes to me sometime. all i can says that it is hard to reunited many people for some activities like this, everyone in this world are different, right? so it was a big achievement when National River Clean-up can reunited many kind of people.
okay, to be honest i never go to the program likes this since i was a kid. it is really bad for me right ? never mind, somedays i will try to joins this kind of activity. insyaAllah

Almost everyone in the world always say that they want to save the earth and help our environment. But how often did the human actually do that? Actually I am also the among of them. But this situation change when one day my friend told me to join an activity about river clean-up in my staying area. I realize that it is a chance for me to change and to be active to save the environment as a responsibility of a human on earth. The day finally come and I was too excited. Our project leaders divided us into some groups of 5 and 6. Then he put us on the work. He not only gave us the plastic bag to collect the rubbish but also assign us to record down the type of trash we collected at there. This is to make a statistical purpose for the environment. The most type of rubbish we collected on that day was bottle cap. It was actually useful and can be recycle again to prevent pollution. It was really fun although we just picking up the trash along the river. We know the important of river more deeply and I was proud to myself that I being active to be a volunteer in the activity. Hence, I strongly recommend all of my friend to take part of it rather than wasting time on doing other things. And it really give you a big satisfied feeling.

This was a meaningful event to help save our mother earth. As we know that is so many interesting and beautiful place in this world, but so sadly to said that not much people appreciate about it, some people is too selfish that they only care about own beneficial, they just care about their convenience without thinking what is the effect of their selfish action. That is why there are so many beautiful places in this world have been polluted by the selfish people. We must organize more meaningful activity like this to clean up our environment so that our next generation would having a clean and healthy environment.

618 kilos of rubbish by the river is a lot of rubbish. I have no idea why human being must be so lazy to pack up their own garbage and throw them into the bin provided just around the corner. It shows how selfish human beings are nowadays.

I had participated in river clean up. But we did not measure our garbage weight. I think it would be a good idea to do so in future. I would like to share about one of my most unforgettable river clean up at Sungai Congkak, Hulu Langat.

I am under a youth societies called TRYBS. Our initial plan was to challenge the river tracking there. But, it is sad to say that we changed our plan when we reach there. The reason is because that the river was full of rubbish causing us to feel uncomfortable tracking inside the river. At that time, I was curious how the people there could ignore that rubbish and playing in the rubbish area. Together we get the big rubbish begs and start picking up those left over rubbish. Is very tiring to do so, but after cleaning up, we can feel the satisfaction by looking at those clean and happy river flowing.

We do not required everyone to volunteer for river clean-up, but please do the least by taking the responsibility to throw your own left over into the bin. If everyone does so, there won’t be any needs of having river clean up volunteer, and the river will be happy as well.

This is such a meaningful activity which is a way to raise people awareness of environmental issues. It shocked me when the article mentioned 618 kilos of rubbish was collected and there are heavier garbage exist. Even mobile charger can be found at there too. It is so sad to know that some people do not have civic awareness. They throw the rubbish everywhere because they feel dirty to bring back or lazy to find rubbish bin. Although I never participate in river clean-up, but I did involved myself in beach clean-up with a group of friends. No matter is river or beach, we should appreciate and protect our Mother Nature because actually we are depending on each other. For example, trees provide us oxygen and they need us to get carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. We are in mutualism relationship. People nowadays should not only focus on technology development blindly. We should conserve our beautiful nature at the same time.

Good day Pn.Zue. What is river? According to the Wikipedia the meaning of river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, a lake, a sea, or another river. It's clearly stated that river should be freshwater but nowadays the river's condition is opposite to the freshwater which unclean water. This is really made me so sad about the problem. There have plenty of posters, advertisements and awareness campaign about river clean-up but no one have the responsibilities to overcome the issue.

I'm really proud of you Ms.Zue because have a good intention to bring the students to do the river clean-up activity. I like it because is not just written words but words that are acted on. At times acting is better than talking. This makes people like me to realize how other people are serious about caring for the environment out there. One other thing we have to understand is that the environment is our life without it we cannot survive, looking at the food we eat even the air we breathe is all about the environment if we pollute the environment and we don’t take action at the end of the day we as human beings we are the ones to suffer. Do you know that pollution interfere with our health and it is the reason why life expectancy is very low today?

So it’s high time we start acting against all the factors that pollutes our precious world because we as people we are making other living things like plants and animals to suffer. If we want to stop the damage from becoming more critical, we should take the necessary steps. We may not have to fold our pants and get into the river to clean it up but the least we could do is to help and support organizations and movements which are committed in keeping our national rivers clean. Let’s give a hand and be proactive before it’s too late. Save our rivers.
Thank you.

Dear Puan Zue

River is a large natural stream of fresh water flowing along a definite course, being fed by tributary streams. It is very important to provide habitat for fish, plants and animals. There are several sources of water pollution which work together to reduce overall river water quality. Industry and agriculture discharge liquid waste products, drains from urban areas and farmland, absorbs contaminants. Many towns and factories are built near rivers so that they can use water from the river. But sometimes the water is not cleaned before it is put back into the river. This dirtying of water is called pollution. Moreover, people are sometimes careless and throw rubbish such as bottles and crisp packets directly into rivers. Pollution kills water plants and animals. Polluted water also carries diseases. When animals drink the water, they may get diseases which can kill them. People can even get these diseases by eating the infected animal. We can heal the nature with strengthen the law, nature education and this kind of campaign "National River Clean-up " to maintain our river clean and the ecosystem balance for our future generation.

Save and Love Our River and nature <3

My very or shall I say extremely personal opinion, it is a great and huge deal that the students from Uniten made an effort to clean the riverside for "one whole day" and managed to collect 618KG of rubbish. Why am I expressing this in a sarcastic manner? What they did was a very little tiny act of kindness to the mother nature. But obviously, there are a lot more at stake here. We are talking about the earth as a whole. 8 hours of cleaning would just make the cut. We(the whole human generation) need to start taking this issue very seriously. We are talking about a big issue here, the scientists and geologists around the world have been debating this issue for the past 2 decades. They were expecting the global warming which resulted to the rise of sea levels continuously to other unimaginable natural disasters worldwide. We need to realise that we are on the edge of destruction here, wake up people! We need to do more, we need every hands that we can get in order to make a change. An exterme measure must be taken. Over the past decades or so, issue of environmental degradation have increasingly crept it way into the global arena. In more recent context, the issue of climate change and global warming have increasing gained speed and have become one of the key hot topics that the global community is concerned with. Malaysia has also found itself caught within this fired up debate of climate change and attempted initiatives that appear to be aimed at such environmental issues. However, interestingly, this is not so straightforward as Malaysia have historically, a dominantly developmentalist state which tends to place economic development ahead of everything else, including the environment. The future of our world in depending on us, we can't expect the politicians to make the decision which we are going to live for the rest of my life and our generations. I know I'm getting ahead of my self, but let me ask this, are you willing to let our younger live the consequences of our mistakes today? From now on, more action and less talk. Let's start now, start a recycle bin in our household, STOP taking long showers, car pool is the best, enforce extremely strict law on those greedy, disgusting multi-million corporation who are the biggest contributor towards the world's destruction. I know it's still not the end of the world, but hey! it's never too late to make a change. Small changes will eventually make a huge difference in the world that we are living today. “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” ― Mahatma Gandhi. Think about it. Same thing goes to the river, in this case :-) Thanks for reading.

Water is a basic human need. However, water is increasingly polluted. Contamination associated with the release of various types of solutions of toxic chemicals and waste into rivers and the sea.
1)The main cause of water pollution is domestic waste. Domestic waste materials consisting of garbage and sewage dumped indiscriminately into the river. Parties are not responsible for taking the easy way to drain waste into drains and rivers. When domestic organic waste is decomposed and broken down by the bacteria with oxygen dissolved in the water, there is a lack of oxygen in water conditions that threaten aquatic life.
2)Development of the manufacturing industry is also a major source of water pollution. Most of the plants built at the riverside to facilitate waste materials discharged into the rivers. The problem arises when the liquid chemical released into the river untreated beforehand and contain toxic substances that pollute water.
In conclusion, water pollution can be addressed if all parties work together to address them. We must ensure that our environment clean and safe place to live. Legislative action alone can not solve this problem. Government should strengthen environmental education to curb this problem.

It’s quite sad to hear that now day’s river pollution becoming critical. River has been playing predominant roles in human being life since very early times. They provide water to slake the thirst of men, to fertilize their lands and to provide a means of communication for the goods that transport from place to place.
Rivers are should be protected. These rivers are part of nature and add to the beauty of our country. However with irresponsibility act from some people really shades away the beauty of river. River is one of the most precious creations of Mother Nature; therefore it is our responsibility to take care of our river.

For me, when we go picnic at some place near the river, we should make sure the place is clean after the picnic take place, as those wasted rubbish will affect the beauty and polluted the places. Its an unhealthy and unmoral habit to do like that. We should be grateful for we had now from time to time as it is gifted from out lord. Actually adults play an important role for this problem, as adult, they should play an role model on their kids by starting protect and show the care to the mother of nature, not only the river, but others such as air pollution as well. Lastly, we should take care of our surrounding environment as we can live in a healthy and pollution free environment. Thus, our next generation can enjoy the mother of nature and start doing the work whereby starting from our generation. Stop pollution, protect our mother of nature.

Rivers have been very useful to humans in all parts of the world since prehistoric times. They provide a source of drinking water, for obtaining food, to fertilize lands and way to transport goods from place to place. Rivers also provide an important habitat for wildlife. They play an essential role in the ecology of rainforest and wetlands. A list of the most important rivers in the world.Rivers have been a source of food since pre-history. They can provide a rich source of fish and other edible aquatic life, and are a major source of fresh water, which can be used for drinking and irrigation. It is therefore no surprise to find most of the major cities of the world situated on the banks of rivers. Rivers help to determine the urban form of cities and neighbourhoods and their corridors often present opportunities for urban renewal through the development of foreshoreways such as Riverwalks. Rivers also provide an easy means of disposing of waste-water and, in much of the less developed world, other wastes. So what i'm trying 2 sayed is river have a important path to our life.

rivers provide some of our most beautiful and most endangered natural habitats. whether we enjoy whitewater rafting down a wild, clear mountain river or drifting serenely on a slow, gentler river, rivers give us places to enjoy nature. sadly, rivers face pollution from many sources, such as farming, industry and even tourism.

it is important to protect rivers from pollution in order to save them for ourselves and future generations. we should educate ourselves as we can't begin to protect rivers until we know what their problems are. we also should visit a nearby river. we can't begin to fight pollution until we see the problem for ourselves. we need to spend some time on the closest river to us, so that we can begin to understand the beauty and the variety of life it supports.

I'm sorry if my opinion is rather different from everyone else and a bit radical about it but everybody has different point of view right? From my point of view, we can't totally blame the visitors or tourists hundred percent because the management or people who are responsible in managing the river are also responsible in keeping the river clean. From my experience, every river I went are lack of facilities which are important to the visitors. For example the washroom, dustbin, camp fire and what not. Even though they have quite a number of washrooms, but they do not maintain it well. Some of the washrooms are dirty and disgusting. Sometimes there are no water in that washroom. On the other side, the management should know that tourists will come and bring their own food and what not. The management itself sometimes has to be blame because they do not provide enough facility in order for the tourist to throw the garbage or waste. That's one of the reason why the tourists tend to throw garbage randomly. If they want to preserve the river, they have to identify what are the factors and try to solve it like providing enough facility to the tourists. For example, if you go to Air Terjun Pandan which is situated in Kuantan, Pahang, they have entry fees, which one of the method to collect budget to preserve the river. They still can preserve the river because they can maintained and provide enough facility to the tourists. As the conclusion, every party involved have to work together in order to preserve the river. We have to see as a whole and not blaming just one party for spoiling that place which is inevitable.

Taking care of our river is so important because that is one of the sources of our water usage in our daily lives. Therefore, it is the responsibility for each one of us to not pollute the river. I strongly agree if there are campaigns or events on cleaning the river. In fact, it should be featured to the youngsters nowadays. Besides that, the living creatures inside the river are God's creation. How can anybody vainly kill the underwater creatures by throwing rubbish and all the things that can destroy them. Furthermore, water pollution can cause bad smells that comes out from the river to the population that lives around that particular area. Therefore, as a human that were created with brains, we should take care of our river intensely so that our grand grandchildren can still enjoy the beauty of rivers just like the old time.

We need to take care and preserve our river. The environment and landscape around our river is great and good for both human and animal. Also some animal make the river as their habitat and a place for a food source. We need river also for a recreation place or for picnic for a relaxation some time from busy at work place. But some of us did not care about the river thus when they go to have a picnic they just throw away some leftovers or garbage into the river without even feeling guilty.

There are also a lot of construction around malaysia's rivers. Because of this the surrounding soil has no tree roots to hold onto so when it rains it wears down and ends up in the river. This will causes the rivers to become all dirty and disgusting, the fish and things in the water die and the drinking water is also disgusting, and you did not want to bathe in it. The water is also getting polluted by industries dumping waste in malaysia's waters and it's washing into the rivers. In order to save and maintain our river so that it always stay clean, we need to immediately take action and force a rule so that everybody will not make mistake like dumping any garbage into the river.

Rivers is a basic natural resource, essential for various human activities. Human need water to grow crops for food and obviously to drink. River has fish, which can be used for food and if the river is big enough it can be used for transportation and trade with other communities along that river. Rivers provide some of our most beautiful and most endangered natural habitats by enjoying the clear mountain river or drifting serenely on a slow; rivers give us places to enjoy nature. Sadly, rivers face pollution from many sources farming, industry.
It is important to protect rivers from pollution in order to save it for ourselves and future generations as we human depend on much the nature of the river. National River Clean-up project is a great and noble act to give back to the environment. As human, we always take from our mother nature without any concern to give back. Worst of all, we even do the damage or harm to our earth (big or small, severe or not, intentionally or not ). Nowadays, with the development of theme parks around the nation especially the one that includes water park, younger generation has been less attracted to the river. It's possible and not surprising that youth or children nowadays have not been to the river and experience what we used to fancy back then in the old days that is "mandi sungai". Thus, with social activity like river cleaning, it is a good exposure to the youth so that they will be concern about what is happening to our mother nature (the real condition) and also will bring them closer to the nature itself. It's through experience that we only can really feel something. By taking the matter in their own hands, getting their hands to pick up the rubbish from the river, soaking their feet in pleasant cold of river water, surely can give them new perspective in appreciating and preserving the mother nature more. Rivers, apart from obvious role of being the home of many freshwater animals are actually the crucial entity that help to preserved our water supplies. Proper treated water will be release back into the soil or the rivers. Unfortunately, some irresponsible organization or companies have failed to obliged to the environmental act that is imposed by the government. The have release polluted, untreated, harmful chemicals into the river because it's the cheapest way to get rid of their industrial wastes. These have severely affected the state of cleanliness of the rivers, their inhabitants and also the oceans. In conclusion, individuals together with the community must do their part, responsibility to keep our rivers clean for the sake of our next generation and also mother nature in the future.

I dont have much experience on joining national river clean-up or any other clean-up team. But from my point of view, we need to preserve our river because it is the main source for our water. River is the alley of transportation and communication which is very important especially during the Neolithic Time in Malaysia. Mankind which survive around the corner had made the position nearby river as their homes because food resources and water resources can be found easily.Apart from these, the useful of hidroelectric generator enables to keep clean water sources to be used by Malaysians especially when the progress of occupants getting more obvious rather than having electric energy. Apart from Malaysia, there are also countries that very required river such as Thailand and Canada. Thailand also reknown as 'Venice of East' due to have many canals for examples Me Wang, Me Nam, Me Ping, Me Yom and Menom Chao Phraya as long as 1290 km. So we need to take part and action to preserve our river because it is very important to us.

It is very important to involve people in such event as rivers clean up but also it is important to understand that if we don’t pollute our nature, and then we won’t need to clean it. People have to treat environment as their treat their houses: to keep it clean and let next generation to enjoy beauties that we have.
In my opinion it is very necessary to talk about this kind of problems especially in schools and universities so to let understand kids and adult what we shouldn’t do and what we should to save our planet. Moreover it is important to notice that if one ecosystem is destroyed it will lead to another chain of destructions. So let’s keep our nature in cleanliness and let’s join any possible events that will help us to achieve that goal!
Also it has to be mentioned that such companies as environmental organization – Greenpeace, will definitely make our struggle easier. As far as we know, Greenpeace uses peaceful direct actions to expose our nature from any negative influence. But we have to start from something small and the event which is being discussed here is the best start! Would definitely love to join it.

As for me I have never participate in any river cleanup campaign but I have witness some incident where people throwing rubbish into the river. This was happen during my picnic with my friend in sungai kinchang. Some people don’t have ethic and simply throwing rubbish into the river. They should now that what goes around comes around. Throwing rubbish into the river can cause water pollution and can cause aquatic animal to die. This action also can cause imbalance in biodiversity and may also cause flood. The polluted water will come back to us as drinking water and can harm us. The society should care about the nature and preserve it as good as possible. We should think this earth as our own home. Campaign should be carried out in order to make the society to realise the important in taking care river and the authorities should enforce law and penalise those who commit this action (throwing rubbish into river).

Firstly i would like to give a compliment for this post. It is simple make us realized and appreciate our mother nature.

This is may not related about riving cleaning but my thoughts that i want to express.

I believe there so much things that we might admire in lives especially nature. My most interested field is about jungle. I love tree so much even i never have attempt to grow up any.

Maybe i live in somewhere surrounded with many tress and i feel it so calm and peaceful. The moment when you walk out from house in the dawn to go to mosque for Subh Prayer, it feel so good with the sound of some kind of animal and the air especially.

Every time i take a stroll by walk around my area, i found the peacefulness of nature the most until one day when the authorities is conducting their work to cut the trees. They are cut it all. That is totally ridiculous. They should have some thoughts and manner how to handle these things. Enough said.

Back to the river our topic, this is the same feeling and thought that always play around my mind that why the people do not simple love and care about the nature.

River is always be my one of favorite place to go for reasons. I enjoy every time to go there to take same shot of pictures. Just because of the unwell and unorganized river, that simply make me sick to go to river again except for to join my family member to have picnic time together.

The government and the people especially must nurture themselves to love the nature because we are inherit our ancestor. We should leave them to with care and manner.

Save the nature for future.

River is very important to human being. But nowadays , our river is getting more dirty and full of rubbish. If we don't protect our river , maybe in our future times we could not have any clean water or fishes to eat. So , we must lead by example not to make the river more dirtier and also can join some activity like cleaning up the river too.

Too bad I missed the chance to join such a meaningful event. I personally think that this was a great effort to help preserve our country’s most important natural resource. The only thing lacking is the fact that these events only turn out occasionally, sometimes once a year. In my point of view, the condition of our rivers needs to be attended to on a more regular basis. People litter rivers every day. There is more littering done than cleaning. This is a major letdown. We should all be aware that we owe rivers a great deal of respect due to the roles they play in our lifelines. They provide us the water we drink, help grow our crops and cools down our industries. Rivers also have a unique self-purifying function that helps in transporting and transforming our wastes. They also transport goods, generate power and sustain our recreation and ecosystem. And the list just goes on and on. They offer so much but we appreciate so little. The condition of our rivers today reflects our attitudes towards the world around us and ultimately towards ourselves. The society that fails to protect its rivers is simply destroying their own lifelines. Hopefully, we can all play a role in preserving our rivers and keeping its benefits alive for the profit of future generations. If we’re not the one preserving it, who else can we depend on?

618 kilos of rubbish?! Man, that’s a huge number. Anyway, I don’t have any involvement on river cleaning yet and wish to have one nearby. I would say that most of the rivers are polluted nowadays, not only in Malaysia, but also around the globe. I guess rapid growth of development and the busyness in the human being are taken for the blame. In the past, the rivers are crystal clear that you can see the bedrocks, but now most of the rivers are yellowish. Muddy river can be seen everywhere in urban and sub-urban area. This is due to rapidly growth of development, where there are many mud spills. Well, I’m not saying that development is a no-no in our country, but I hope that the authorities and the contractors can have a proper planning on safeguard the natures. Besides, the busyness and the selfishness of human being are taken into the responsible of dirty river. Most of the time, we are too busy on doing other things – picnic, that we don’t even care of cleaning up the site in a proper manner. So, for the picnickers out there, I hope you can take the responsible to keep every inches clean. So, let us preserve and conserve our mother nature before it’s too late.

This article is really very convicting. Rivers are the most beautiful place to be visited. However, if we are not going to play our role to take care of this beautiful asset, then we will not be able to enjoy the beauty of this river to the fullest. I wonder why some people are just so irresponsible towards this nature by dumping things into it without any concern for it. It is time for us to make a change. We need to come forward in unity to take care of our nature. We need to get involved in activities such as this to bring about a change to the environment and also to raise awareness about what is happening to our nature.

This is way too cool! 618 kilos of rubbish in one day? So, I'm suppose this is call the power of teamwork. Nowadays, our Mother Nature are having a serious destruction and this is not suppose to be happen. The only thing we can do is to help "Her" restore back what "She" look like in the past. I still remember back them i went to CLICQ's training camp, we were jungle trekking and pass a river. And Oh My God! It was so dirty. I still remember the red color underwear. Anyway, let's keep the nature clean.

First of fall, I would like thank to Pn.Zue for giving me a chance to write about national river clean up. As everyone knows, our country has fulfilled with much beautiful nature and thus it’s become one of the famous tourism places for everyone. This tourism places are not only attracts local citizen but many foreigners too. But Nowadays, pollution and deterioration of nature is extended because of some irresponsible people. People are throwing rubbish into the river which will cause water pollution and leads aquatic animals to die. Later on, The polluted water will be filtered and piped to our home as a drinking water and this can harm all of us but most of them don’t bother about it because of the attitude “who cares”. In addition, all these problems will destruct the economical income of tourism and reduces number of visitors to our country. This problem basically will lead to economic crisis for our country. To prevent this, we need to do awareness campaign such as “National River Clean-up” project, the one done by UNITEN recently. This was done in order to conserve and preserve our mother nature. These are the effective ways which may help students to realize how important river is to their daily life. Furthermore, why we need to preserve and conserve river from being polluted is that because it’s a symbol to appreciate the god’s gift and we need to take initiative to care of its cleanliness as much we care about our self. From my opinion, I will suggest that UNITEN must make this campaign as a compulsory so that everyone realizes the importance of river.

Rivers clean up???
Yes, we as nations should be aware and cautious to make our rivers clean for the natural habitats to live peacefully without them being destroyed. As far as concerned, we all know the rivers now are being polluted by rubbish disposed by mankind as well as toxic from factories are being released to the rivers. Apart from this, villager who lives by the river their main source of food and monthly income is by fishing. If this matter is not taken into consideration villagers may lose their source of living. This endangers us as well as all living creatures. So we as responsible people should save our rivers by vanishing river water pollution. More campaigns and awareness program like for example “National River Clean-Up” programs should be taken place often to aware people the importance of having a clean river.

Greetings Madam Zue,

There is a 90% chance to find trash in any river, specifically in Malaysia. First of all, I want to say that how daft people are. Because of the selfish behavior of certain people, most of our rivers are filled with trash.

Some people say; “I didn’t throw rubbish in the river” or “It’s not my fault there’s rubbish in the river” or even “Why do I need to care?”. Even though it is not you who threw rubbish into the rivers, due to your selfishness, you are no better than the people who discarded their rubbish there in the first place. What a better way to stop this inhumane act towards nature than having a campaign such as The National River Cleanup. It might knock some sense and teach us about humility in the face of mother-nature. The fact is, rivers are the source of food, water and also energy that should be respected and conserved by man.

But still, people neglect the responsibility to take care of our rivers until it is too late. Once a river gets too polluted, it not only kills the living creatures that inhabits but also kills creatures including us per say, that consume the resources of that particular river. In a way, polluting the rivers and neglecting to do anything about it will cause us, our children and perhaps even our grandchildren to suffer greatly. As we all know, in Malaysia, we opt to use hydroelectricity. Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower. And where does that water comes from?, Our rivers!. To the people who pollute our rivers, please look back at what you have done. It is like you are subjugating to murder in a way as your actions, however minor it may seem, can cause utter turmoil to other beings including our fellow man.

What benefit is there by polluting our own resources?. You might say, “Owh! It’s just a bit of rubbish, no big deal. You’re just getting worked up over nothing.”. Well that is where you’re wrong. Imagine over a thousand people throwing a single plastic bag in the river per day. This can cause the river to clot and may cause flash floods and other disasters. Imagine these clots were in a dam, it will cause slow water movement which affects the production of electricity which causes a problem to yourself and others around you.

The population of Malaysia is approximately 28 million, those who pollute the rivers might at least be over 100,000. What are the excess 27,900,000 people doing to stop this insanity?. It is our responsibility to keep our rivers clean and hope that future generations can also enjoy them, so let us clean our rivers for the sake of tomorrow.

Be considerate, look for trash can or hold the rubbish if there is no trash can to be found. In that way, nature could be preserve and we could have a beautiful and healthy country.

First of all, I'm really disappointed to have missed out on this great opportunity to participate in this clean-up project held in collaboration with KAGUM. Getting to know that our picnic-rivers are under threat, proper actions should be taken to ensure that our picnic-rivers remain clean and beautiful for a long time to come. We all know that these rivers play an important role in providing a balanced ecosystem. The fact that thousands of kilos of rubbish were collected at only a particular picnic site just shows how much more garbage are polluting other rivers. It saddens me to see our beautiful rivers being treated badly by our very own actions of dumping rubbish into the rivers. All in all, let us all unite and save our rivers from deteriorating further.

River
There is a lot of big river in our country. The river is full of living things such as fish, crocodile, frogs, underwater plant and much more. Nowadays our rivers has been spoiled by the act of outlaw that make the river become dirty and not good to be seen by the people. The outlaw act is such toxic waste into the river. It has caused the living things at the river also spoiled with it. This act of outlaw need to be cured as soon as possible because the river is one of the place to find food source. If human eats something that they get from the river that has been spoiled, they can be affacted of disease. As the living thing in the river can be the food for human, we need to play as the savior of the river. We need to cure the river problem as soon as posibble to save the food source. There is some ways to settle the problem of the river. One of it is doing campaign such as “Love Our River Campaign”. With the campaign, people will know the reason why we are saving the river. The campaign help people to understand how important the river is to our daily life right now. We can also put a fine to those who spoiled the river as the way to scared those people from doing such outlaw act. The money from the fine can be added to community service that help in the such campaign that help out nature life.

I believe many of the volunteers were first-time participants of a river clean up. So, it’s helped to spread the good things in the future and maybe the number of participant will increase for each year. It was certainly an eye opener for the first-timer to see the extent of the rubbish problem at our river picnic areas and the general attitude of the public regarding environmental conservation. GOD created rivers to play a vital role in daily life of humans. They provide clean water, food, fibre, energy and many other benefits that support economies and livelihoods across the state. Healthy river systems contribute to a lot of great things in our life. Yet their environmental values are equally valuable. River systems are diverse and complex ecosystems in their own right, sustaining diverse species of native plants, fish and animals, all of which play a vital part in maintaining environmental balance. But some people don’t have ethic and simply throwing rubbish into the river. Throwing rubbish into the river can cause water pollution and can cause aquatic animal to die. It amazing at this day, we still have youngster who still concern about the environment. Pollution of air, water, soil and the destruction of the nature are like cruel violation that our mother earth suffered every second.

I myself never join any river cleanup activity, but I educated myself on how to preserve the river and the nature. Never throw rubbish into the river is the smallest deed we can do to keep our river clean. I also keep myself update about the environment issue.

In the mean time I do have a few ideas on how to preserve our river. Firstly I do think our picnic rivers do need a break from people. It shouldn’t be open every day or every week end. If this implemented, I think we can cut the half of the garbage that dump into the rivers by visitors and besides we can cut the half the maintaining cost.
My second point for us to maintain the river purity, the government should not open every beautiful river or that have ‘picnic potential’ to the public. We understand it has the attraction to the tourist and tourism industries, but we also cannot risk our national beauty to be consumed just because of the money. The access our beautiful river, especially which located at very exotic place should be limited. It’s not right for the nature if 1000 families dump their self in one or two kilometers length river. With all due respect to all homo-sapiens; this is like a ‘rape’ to the nature.
In addition to my second point, I also suggest the Picnic Rivers that already face serious to close to the public. This should be exercise until the river recover itself and a good mechanism to prevent the pollution is implemented.

The government agency such Jabatan Alam Sekitar, Jabatan Air & Saliran dan Jabatan Perhililitan should work together and be upfront to prevent and preserve our river, and educate the society of how important our rivers are.

It is a great experience, it is organized by my school and many of us participated in that activity. This world is changing, getting worst to worst. The generation today is different from 30 or 40 years ago. Most of the people nowadays are selfish, they don’t really care what is happening to the nature. People don’t realize that what happens today will affect the future generation, we have to save our nature for our future generations. This is our land, we must do something to stop pollution and deterioration of nature.

Why is it essential for us to participate in this kind of event? If you are following the current stream of information especially the ones close to Mother Nature, you might notice that our ecology had been plundered! There is definitely no balance. One of the most adverse effects that humanity is experiencing is the global warning. This occurrence, had eventually contribute to the thawing of ice bergs in North and South Pole. Scientists said that the sea level had been increasing every year! And all this by whom?
It is by us, the beings with six senses. When humanity can think and yet do this carnage to earth, I think it is time that we use the same thinking ability to contribute something for the well-being of Earth. It is time for us to give back. This is also for the sake of us, Homo sapiens.
Thus, let us all play a part in the healing of the world by joining these activities that are being organized by good people. It might be a small event but it has the power to change the world.
