Is there justice and fairness for our children?

Adults understand (but may rebel occasionally) that somehow, life has its ups and downs, opportunities and unforeseen circumstances, luck and misfortune. Some are rich when others are poor and secluded; some are in joy when others endure endless suffering and oppression. Today, life may seem like you're opening Pandoras's box, when tomorrow can be a totally different picture.

The question is, should we drag children into this paradox? dilemma? confusion?

After writing my supposedly-last article, i believe i must agree with my friend Ritz Chewan that may be, i was facing writer's block..SO, what makes this come-back?

Apparently, my beloved children, and my fight for justice for all children. Now, I shall narrow doen this scope of discussion and invite you to consider the opportunities that schools create for our children....and ironically, deprive almost simultaneously.

I observe that my children love schooling and they participate in a bunch of activities and competitions. They represent school for story telling and choir competitions. They also spend time away from home joining PBSM camping trips as well as prefect activities. All in all, only one dream remains unfulfilled - 100m dash challenge! My children run a bit at home, and they love the backyard. But 100m event ultimately brings a different triumphant experience.

So, here comes the irony. I learned (the hard way) that at Primary Four, the school has obviously already eliminated my child's dream to even participate in 100m event. Farah got 2nd in 'saringan' but DID NOT end up in the team. The teacher's choice was no other that her best friend who got 5th place in 'saringan'...???

I tried to discuss the predicament with the teacher, counting on the notion of realizing children's dreams, and highlighting on the aspirations of the National Philosophy of Education to provide adequate exposure and development for Jasmani, Emosi, Rohani and Intelek.

And what did i discover??? The teachers have already shorlisted and identified the school runners, and they are more than happy to stick to their reputable list so that their 'rumah sukan' will become champion, and that other children's dreams to indeed try their talent in the event go to pieces, shatter in utter frustration.

If you have been in school enduring the cruelty of this system...i believe you'd understand how bitter this truth really is. If you are a parent, consoling your child to now be contented with running around the backyard, or completing loops at the nearby stadium...we may be in the same boat.

Think about this. The world is already cruel to children in so many different ways. I personally think that killing children's dreams- like this- is massacre!

Some may say that a child, like adults, can slowly and eventually grasp this bitter reality. Afterall, sports is only one dimension of educational and social development. My child can accept the disappointing result of my discussion wiht the teacher, but i wish i didn't have to have garnered all my strength to finally be defeated by a ridiculous system like it!

100 m dash....of course...to be included brings a wealth of happiness and experience. To be secluded...because of the so-called lame system... is evidence of ignorance to children's rights to develop potentials and enjoy childhood.

At least, that's what I think!

So, what do you have to say about this paradoxical, unfortunate interpretation and implementation of our esteemed National Philosophy of Education?

hi madam zue...............

i totally hate this paradoxial situation especially in schools...my experience of this kind of situation is so painful even to think bout it nw..but let me giv u an example faced by someone who is very close to me..this persom is a public speaker and story teller in primary school...once she entered secondary she always wanted to continue her talent in public speaking..but she didnt get de chance..y??it is because that the teacher choose someone else based on their looks????that paticular teacher didnt even hav an audition or an impropmtu..she juz choose randomly..how on earth a teacher who is also known as a very knowledgeable n intelligent person do this??
are looks more important than talent??does the teacher want to prove that the school has more good looking students than more talented students...??this is totally nonsense and should be put to an end!!consider the talent as the main thing then followed by other qualities..if this kinda situation continues in the education system, then it is just dream on to those who wants malaysia to reach wawasan 2020 in a decade time..

Salam Fahmie..thank you for d kind invitation. I was at IJN, so I couldn't join d fun. But I truly hope it was a tremendous and invigorating experience organizing and participating in the theatre.

Now, in line with the notion of the article, when will ASTENA theatre offer opportunities to children? You can start with the children of UNITEN staff staying on campus like RK, RF, UNITEN top management, and PPH-ITMS on-call batch. Let's bring a lot more wonderful experience to the children around, yeah...:)

Hi Pn Zue, Its been awhile since i've wrote anything.. hope you are well:)

I dislike the fact that educators don't understand the importance of the learing process. educators do not realize that anything they do may reflect back towards their students. Children don't see that educators sometimes take advantage of their students and are not sensitive to the children needs. They look up to their educators as a more superior human being and thus, educators should try to be more than just teachers, they should be a more dignified reflection of themself so that they could shape and mold their students to become a respectable human being .

Greetings,

It has been a while since i last checked on this blog, really sorry for that.
Regarding this unfair and ridiculous (please do pardon my selection of rather harsh words) system of selecting representatives based on irrelevent critirion, it must be said regretfully that it is not uncommon.
What saddens me is the bigger picture: children have been taught that if they want to achieve something, anything, they must work hard for it, and it is through their hardwork that their reward, whatever it may be, is earned. But, thanks to this system, these children would not get their reward, no matter how hard they try. Imagine the repocutions......
That being said, here is the logic(or the absence of it). Citing the example of your daughter (with all due respect, Pn Zue), one who get 2nd place in the relay couldnt qualify, but the slower one(again, with all due respect to the child who got fifth) manages to qualify...hmmm.... i'm sorry but i really can't see the sense in that. What are these teachers doing? Our new PM is stressing performance-based work ethics, but apparently that doesn't seem to apply to children, does it?!
And how a mother could endure trying to rationalize the utter irrationality so that the child would somehow feel better, somehow accpeting this absurdness... that demands the upmost of respect.
Unfair as the world may seem to be, no child should endure such things, definitely not by their own teachers. Lets hope this mentality would change for the better.

Therefor, In my opinion, justice needs to be devided and fair to everyone, either for children or adults. we the adults are giving to much opportunities and chances to the childrens. Infact, we need to let them be independence and mature by doing things for themself..~~~ =)

As a child may not have the right to speak up to the elders nor to stand their stance because of the immaturity and lack of knowlegde. eventhough, they are lack of everything but they have fellings. that is the most important thing. is there any justice to children where most of the elders used to condemnt them without hearing their thought and chance to speak? try to treat them fairly and atleast give them chances to speak up and hear their fellings, guide them to right path, try to see their talent then polish it and be a friend with them.

It is very rare to find a situation where adults would lend their ears and listen to childrens thoughts. Some of these inconsiderable people think that kids are just so immature to even voice out an opinion or a suggestion. But little do they know that it is actually the kids who often inspire them in many ways.
Childrens are very special and talented in their own way and they have these abilities we adults don't possess. So as an adult who has been in their shoes and knows what it feels like to be abandoned, supposedly we treat them fairly and let them see that we care and understand them. Childrens are very fragile, once they're broken, we can't fix them anymore. xx

I think for me it's because people tend to perceive children as children, as in not to be taken seriously. Usually they would say something like "oh they're children, so what?" or "this child is talking nonesence, wheres his parents?" or something like that.

Also I think its because people think children as simple minded tiny people (well maybe they are a bit). With that, they think they can be let down, disciplined, etc without really any serious consequences. Thats why when they grow up to be teens they become all rebelious and annoyed (nah im just kiding.. maybe)

Justice and fairness for children? I think there are some justice and fairness for children but not all. Some school childrens are not given the opportunity to expose their full potential and the chance to prove themselves. There are some who are lucky enough that they are given the chance to expose their talents in school like in sports, debates, public speakings and etc. Justice and fairness do exist in some schools where every student is given to oppurtunity to expose their full potential. Therefore justice and fairness do exist for some children but not to all due to several reasons.

Jutice and fairness is not a new word in our life. The important thing is do we obtain justice? Do our children have their rights do speak what they really want? Parents and teachers should encourage them to participate in many activities at school. But sometimes childrens themselves rather to have a nap on their beds than participating some adventurous activities at school. How childrens can obtain justice depends on theirselves. There are many particular ways to get justice and fairness.

nowaday, justice and fairness for student became a big problem. this is happen because of irresponsible of some teachers. some of teacher choice student randomly for activities. teacher choose someone else based on their looks? they are never look our talent. so, what will happen to talent student? this will make student stress and influence to negative activities.this problem must take over before become a sensitif problem. this problem should be put to an end!

hi madam zue.

First of all, nowadays many students faced a lot of problem regarding their participation on certain activities. They have talent but they are afraid to prove it to others due to some irresponsible people. This is because they think that they will be laughed or teased. Besides that, some teachers even make one student stressed up by avoiding them. This is the main fact that make one student stressed up and end up in negative way. Lastly, i would like to tell that justice and fairness is need for children as they are growing and will gain more knowledge.

its true that childrens are being treated as "childrens". Especially in schools they are psychologically being bullied. always choosing a favourite child to represent something great is something which is very wrong. others might get hurt by that behavourial. teachers must imagine themself in that situation what if a new teacher in school quickly got promoted as the penolong kanan? wouldn't the old teachers feel soo much jealous n envy him or her?

In my opinion, i think there should be justice and fairness for the children. Although nothing is fair in this world and we all know that life is just like a Pandoras's box, but we should not drag children into this confusion that early since they are still very young and their minds still not mature yet. This is because if we do so, we are killing children's dreams and breaking their hearts, this will make them feel afraid of try out new things and eventually stop them from learning and even playing. I'm not saying that we should never let the children know and understand about the fact that nothing is fair in this world, we should train and teach them about the cruelty of this society first before they go out to face it so that they can understand about this confusion more better without a broken heart. Therefore, we should begin to teach them about this confusion when they grow older and become more mature in their minds.

Most people have been treated unfairly at one time or another. Sometimes it is a friend that treats us unfairly, and sometimes it is even a teacher. One of the times in my life when I was treated unfairly happened when I was in secondary school.I was participate in FORUM competation. We are four presentative from my former secondary school. Moreover, when my sir appreciate me infront all of my friends.I really don't know what they are feel.Since, that time they never talk with me and they separate me when they are going out, meet the teacher and moreover. On the other hand,i took account as extra subject in my class.I get A+ in my account subject in SPM trial examination. Some specific friends never talk with me.I really get heartsick when they did like this to me.Then later on after I go back to my house,i tell to my mother. My mother was really sad.My mother adviced me,"you just ignore what they did for you, they will realise that one day",said my mother. After few months they talking with me as usual.I filled happy for that. When SPM examination from first day we each other wish good luck.It was account exam that day my friends stop talking with me one day before that exam.I also never bother to them.Because,i think that time my exam is most important.Eventhough i try to manage my self..But I still cannot take it as normal. After I enter my exam hall in 30minutes I feel like something was pressure to me.Then one of the instructor from the exam hall stared at me.After this, had been going for a while, she came over to my table and asked me “what's wrong with you”.I tell nothing to her. Then she sent me to my account subject teacher.I love that teacher alot. She put her hand on my shoulder and ask me what's your problem.I tell to her everything. She advice me.I won’t forget her in my life and that bitter moment in life too.My beloved teacher name is Puan.Zubaidah Binti Khairuddin. That was one of the most unfair treatments that I have ever endured.

Hello Mdm Zue,
People nowadays are getting too hooked up with having big names and reputation. They are willing to exclude potential candidates just because they only trust the ones on the reputable list to win their medal. Worse, they trampled down other child’s dream of participating in the event. To me, this is quite a sickening situation because I’ve went through all this and the history keeps repeating itself to another person. In your case, I see that the teachers want their ‘rumah sukan’ to win but what I don’t see is the significance of the win. Sure, the champion team will have sheer respect and pride from other team but then where is the real meaning of sportsmanship? The teachers are too focused on winning; they missed the important moral value of the event: it’s not about winning and losing, it’s more about exposing and developing the sport skills and having fun. Without this event, how are they going to expose the hidden talents of students? They failed to dig up hidden treasures that might be just right under their noses when they only want to stick to present assets. They think it’s alright to leave out petty newcomers (who might actually perform on par with the school’s ‘athlete’ or better) to root for their ‘best’ selection. Then what’s the use of the ‘saringan’event? They shouldn’t have wasted their time testing the candidates if they had already shortlisted the participants. This is a real non-sense. You’re right, this is a lame system. They are being injustice to other potential candidates. In such an early age, children began to learn how cruel the world is. However, unfair as the world may seem, justice will (I hope) definitely prevail in the end. Reputation gained through illegitimate method will never last. That’s my prospect towards this matter.

Justice are same to evryone's eye.

One of the most important moral traits instilled in us from young is a sense of justice and fairness. Although innately, almost everyone has a sense of fairness, even toddlers who don't know what fractions are can tell you that one slice of pie is larger than the other. This is made explicit by our acculturation to human society.

Now, there are many good reasons for being fair to others. If you give others a fair shake, they will give you a fair shake too.

Of course, there will always be those pesky students who ask why we should be fair to people who might not be fair to us. The answer, I hope, is simply enough: because if nobody is fair to anyone, then we would be all poorer for it than in a society where at least some people are fair to some other people.

yeah..itz true ma'am..nowadays the justice and fairnees for our chidren getting too limited and this makes their talents kept unreveal...The chances to reveal their talents are influenced by the dominan which makes them get down..for instance, a student who gets 6A's in PMR doesn't get a place in a residential school..but her classmate who get only 3A's get the place...this makes the gurl dissapointed...this shows us outstanding and excellent students are opressed by the dominans and as the result, this discourage them to do more better in upcoming challenges..There are many reason why this kind of nature exist among our chidren…

Education in primary and secondary school is very crutial to our children. Education is not just about curiculum only but it consists both curiculum and co-curiculum activities. Education is very important for children. Every children must get included in both activities. This is because it is their priority. However, for co-curiculum events,it is true only the active and TALENTED students get chance to enter a competition representing their 'rumah sukan'.
But unfortunately, the way the teachers choosing the talented students is wrong. They never give chances to new and more talented students. Is this how an educated people think??of course no...
the teachers should make a selection, competitons where only their school students can paticipate, give chance to new students.....

But my hope was broken into pieces when I found out that my teacher have chosen her own daughter for the competition. And it doesn't stop there. This similar situation happened to me even when i was in the secondary school. From there, I've learn something. Sometimes, human do forget of human rights, justice and fairness. We have to deal with it.

What is 'justice'? And what is 'fairness'? Essentially it means everyone is given the exactly same treatment, without bias, regardless of age, gender, race, looks, or even the number of digits in their bank accounts. However, as we all can see, literally all children had been treated unfairly before. Since children start their education journey, they've been constantly bombarded by all the good moral values that they're supposed to implement in their daily lives; only to be questioned by them when they see a bunch of hypocritical adults who are incongruent with what the children had learned in school. Some people might view this phenomenon as 'normal' and others might even think that this will somehow "make the children more mature and ready for the adult world". This is absolutely unacceptable because it is morally wrong. Hence, we should take the following measures to "reclaim" justice and fairness for our beloved children.

Alfizzan said...

Salam... In my point of view, I think the unfairness life is normal to me since I live with it... Since I was a kid, if my parent find a test paper with a good grade, they will never say it was mine even though it was mine but no name written... they take it as my brother's test paper... Unfortunately, if they found a bad grade(under 40 marks), they will straight away blame me and confirm that it was mine eventhough its not... Okay, back to the main topic... I think the level of unfairness to the children these days have increase to such a degree... I still think there was a few justice in this world but the fairness was blown with the wind... Kids should be given a chance to show their abilities in their field of expert... We can take you child for example, she should have been highlighted by the teachers to be in the specific team and fight for it... If they were choosing a player, they should be able to seek for the student's potential in a certain activities... They should also try to be at least a bit considerate about their players future... I found out that teachers or coaches mostly be selfish to win the tournament by giving 2 or more dashes by one runner... If they think what they did was right, why don't they make one player play every single game exist in the world? Please be a bit consideration or show a bit of fairness if it still exist by giving the other student a chance to try their best... one student/player per game... by using this method, many professional sportsmen can be born and Malaysia may be able to participate in sports such as Olympic or maybe the World Cup one day... we may also denied the octopus prediction... I think the government should concentrate even more on children because today's children tomorrow's leader... Last word from me...The children learn from example shown by the older citizen... if we do bad, they will become WORSE! but if we do good, they will become the BEST! if they do the best, we all will be the center of attention of the world... When that happens, we will have nothing to worry about in the future... Wawasan 2020 will not be a dream or a plan any longer, it WILL be reality instead...

Nowadays, the issues regarding justice and fairness for our children has been discussed worldwide among the people in this world. Many people expressed their feelings by stating that children nowdays has got no more justice and fairness in their daily life especially in their school life. In Malaysia, we already have our very own National Philosophy Education. It states that education in Malaysia is an on-going efforts towards further developing the potential of individuals in a hollistic and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who are intelectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically balance and harmonic, based on a finn belief and devotion to God. Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and competent, who possess high moral standards and who are responsible and capable of achieving high level of personal well-being as well as being able to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at large. As we can see from the national philosophy education, children have their own rights to develop their potentials and enjoy their childhood life.Children should also be given oppoturnities to show their talent to the society as children is the future for our world.

if they do this, all the children will be treated fairly.thus,it will keep the children's dreams and aspirations alive.

so c'mon.winning isn't the only thing.what most important is that we all enjoy it.

I believe that as a child myself that this world is never fair. Life is like a box of chocolates, some have almonds and some have nuts. So you can never expect and assume anything good from this earth. I feel that the only way for our children and myself to obtain the justice and fairness that we deeply deserve is to endure the injustice and unfairness in this modern world. Pain is the best teacher, it shows us that we need to strive to not strive. The world does not revolve around a single person and it is not going to hand out happiness on a silver platter. In a nutshell, our children must always stay positive and look at the brighter side of things in order for them to progress further in the not so distant future Like i always say, for every dark cloud there is a thin silver lining and only through perseverance can our children truly find the justice that they richly require due to the fact that the darkest night is just before the dawn. Dont stop believing, hold on to that feeling.

Justice and fairness seems very important in our life especially to our beloved one. We fight to show our dignity. To prove we are strong and not easily being looked down. Children, we always protect them because they did not know what is wrong and what is right to do. They need us to show care and love for them. Is there any justice and fairness for our children? We should realize and know to differentiate which one is “fair” and “not fair”. Fair to children is not about you give whatever they want, it is about to give everything just to make sure that they do not become spoiled and have bad attitudes. If they did not deserve something like they think they deserve, we should give them other opportunities to improve themselves. As they still young, their spirit easily broke down. Makes children feel grief is something that should not happen.

This happens when some of the partisanship that has support only one side. for example, what has been stated by Puan Zue. everyone is not perfect. This is a fact! family relationships as well, this happens. injustice. Parents often say that they are just giving love to their children. but in general, they do not. therefore, very significant responsibilities of parents in providing justice and equity to their children. because the children only think about pleasure and they do not know the difficulties, hardships suffered by their parents. as a solution, parents should act in giving attention to their children so that justice and fairness can be reduced.

Assalamualaikum mdm zue,

Children are the greatest gift from God to us for protect, teach and give education as well. In my opinion, it should have a justice and fairness for our children. As we see, lately, many cases that happened were involved the children. people should have the humanity in themselves especially towards the children. The children needs our attention and be their friends to hear their problems and what they want.

As adults, we must understand what the children's feels. They don't know how to show their feeling and doesn't have a chance to speak up. Furthermore, their minds still not mature yet, so their parents and teachers must play their roles to explain about anything that they want to know. If we give the fairness to them, they can develop their talents and from that, we know their weakness and advantages.

Other than that, teacher in school cannot be a selfish person which is just give attention on certain students. That can make the children feels ignored. In conclusion, children needs the justice and fairness from us, so don't feels regret if our children had to go aside to cook and will not be back.

Thank you.

What is justice and fairness stand for? Justice is like treating everyone fairly under established rules and laws while fairness is giving everyone equal opportunities to succeed and treating all people with honesty and respect. Is there justice and fairness for our children? It should have. Not only for children but need to fair to everyone. Eventhough, child maybe lack of knowledge, but they have their own right. They have their own opinion and speciality. As a adult, we should have been giving more chances to child. Not to stop them from generating ideas nor shattering their dreams. They is our next generation which will rule our country one day. Not because they are still young and immature, we just ignored what they think. We supposed know what the speciality that they have. At least give them a chance to proof what they have and hear what their thought. We have to expose them with many other opportunities so that to build good communication, their selfesteem and others which will help them to face the world.

salam PN.Zue

nothing in this world is fair and unfair.all is the same.sometimes we at the high and sometimes we at the low.we can't achive all of our dreams and we can't get all what we want.we are just a human.that what we call life.if we want to achieve something, anything, we must work hard for it.just do it.don't to obsessed for the reward.

for me,in this life we will faced a lots of challenge and trials.so its normal when one day our heart n dream broke into piece.then, one day we will get what we want.that what we call karma.there will be a good after bad and otherwise.beside, there will be fairness after the unfairness.

Do you even, in your heart, compare your children with others in any state of capabilities and begin to have expectations because of these comparisons you made yourself? Well, the comparisons made itselves had showed that children nowadays not been given fully justice and fairness in them. As an adult, we should know the definition brought by justice and fairness. Justice is treating everyone fairly under established rules and laws while fairness brought a lot of meaning which treating all people with honesty and respect and giving everyone equal opportunities to succeed are of them. Anyone who has kids knows very well the phrase “not fair”. Give one child a piece of candy, and all feel that they too deserve a piece. A child left out will stomp and explode admonitions for justice and fairness. They will have the feeling of getting equal the same but what are those irresponsible people do nowadays are killing children's dream by not being fair and justice to the youngsters. The people must had the thoughts in their mind that maybe kids doesn't have to be given fully sights or attention on them but they didn't think that down at the bottom, the children, too, have their rights. The future that we hold in trust for children will be shaped by our fairness towards them. As a conclusion, i believe that each of the citizens of our own country is entitled to expect justice and fairness including children themselves. They are included as a citizen, don't they? Furthermore, we all deserve a chance to make the best of our lives and to get rewards for our efforts. Same goes to the children.

Hello Ma’am :)

Is There Justice and Fairness for our children? Look at them, and try to understand. What are they really thinking about. Look at those black – small – eyes. And the cute, glossy lips. And look at their attitude, they are just a kid. YES, they are. What else I can say? The mind set of children are not same with the adolescent. They have their own thinking skills. And the feeling, were so soft and unspoken. They chose to be silent at all the times, but they are trying to express their feeling by another way. However, nobody cares. They just felt lonely and useless. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPEN. Children needs attention and guidance. They just want you to know, what they really need and someone to love to. Parents should know and alert when it comes to their children. It is not easy as ABC. They should listen , judge and respond everything that comes out from their children mouth. Please, don’t kill our children dreams because they are the next leaders. Let them do everything they want and guide them as well, just want them to learn what exactly the meaning of life is. This is the real Justice and Fairness. Children just want to be listened and respond :)

When adult dreams is destroy by other people, this will lead to their rebel situation, but when they damage children dreams, they never thinks even a tiny of children hopes and aims. Is this what we call justice for children? Is the narrow minded can be accepted in today's life, i think this is the reason why we still left far behind. In this situation, it recall me to the phrase " let the best man win " but yet, in the teacher mind is " let the elder win ". In our daily life we should be fair to all people, not only for the elder,in addition the teacher should think and can think wisely as and adult from my opinion. We have many talented children nowadays and they have big dreams in their life but ended with frustrated result finally because of this unfair minded. As a result, the dream will remain a dream and the ugly "seniority" tradition will goes on as usual.

Hi Pn.Zue,

"Is there justice and fairness for our children?", wat mean by justice? and fairness?. That is rightfulness or legitimateness. nw a day justice and fairness no longer among many people.no one have time for all this. they rush to their workz.
in m opinion adult no time to hear children problem and difficulty. most children abuse physicaly and mentaly by their suruonding peoples. First of al, at house some parent are treat them like servent and does not gv them proper daily need. other than tat, at school sometimes few teachers bias when taking decision.
Teachers more close with which student they are like and gave for them more advantage and change beside, ignore really talented student.
children really dispirit because this kind of situation. there is no justice and fairness for our children, remember that our offspring will be our country leaders in future.
