National River Clean-up 10th July 2011

Do you know that our picnic-rivers are under threat? If you have enjoyed picnics by the river with family and friends, you may want to act NOW and conserve our watery wonders from dirty and stinky rubbish...in fact, the extent of pollution and deterioration of nature is beyond imagination.

Today, much of our natural beauty have perished at the hands of mankind. As layman,we regret having to witness tremendously horrifying destruction of Mother Nature, and continuous slaughter of our eco-system. Deliberating on these selfish actions is exasperating, and may go beyond our jurisdictions. So, let's identify opportunities to conserve nature at our own backyard, in our neighbourhood or some place where we can perform our responsibility as a concerned citizen.

At UNITEN, undergraduates are involved in diversed community service, and the most recent is National River Clean-up project in collaboration with KAGUM. A total of 87 staff and undergraduates joined the nation's call for conservation of our picnic-rivers. 4 KAGUM members provided the team with the necessary groundrules for river clean-up and joined us in clearing rubbish at the picnic site. Some rubbish are simply ridiculous; for example, who would need a cellphone charger by the river? Indeed we found 'just that' during our national river clean-up project on 10th July 2011.

Finally, we jumped into the river and connected with nature in ultimate bliss!! We pray may our picnic rivers remain this beautiful forever...Our volunteers collected a total of 618 kilos of rubbish from the site. In fact, several other voluntary groups have collected even heavier garbage... and this makes us wonder about the mentality of these litterbugs and selfish picnickers.

It's time to act and volunteer for river clean-up. For those who have participated in such activities, CONGRATULATIONS! The rivers are crying for our help! So, please share your experience with our readers in this blogosphere about your experience as a volunteer for any national river clean-up activtiy, and let's motivate others too.

CONGRATZ to IPSC 2011 WINNERS

This is a truly awesome experience. A grand meeting of great minds and talented, persuasive speakers...i'm glad that the event has brought together participants from various levels namely Foundation, Diploma, Degree and Masters...also, it's ONE MALAYSIA with some international flavour..at least 5 international students joined the competition and Twisha made it to the Finals. Well... 71 participants registered...and this is healthy for a public speaking competition at UNITEN...our friends from GMI, UPSI, Muazzam, and UKM have made it even merrier. Too bad, APIT and KLIUC had to pull out last minute. Let's hope they could join the competition next year.

Thanks to IPSC 2011 committee for a job well done. Yupp!! It's lecturers and students working together on the project that propels success and memento at UNITEN. This year, it's NATIONAL INTER-RESIDENTIAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION...next year shall witness a bigger success with better prizes and lucky draws..he..he..more sponsors???

Good news! We’ll have our 1st Inter-residential Public Speaking Competition on 28th May 2011, Saturday. It’s especially designed for students staying at the hostel. All students who have registered for on-campus accommodation anytime between 1st July 2010 and 1st July 2011 can participate in the event.

The theme is “Leadership 2013” and we hope to get a crowd of public speakers deliberating on the theme.

Winners will get trophies and cash. All participants will be given certificates and SCORUN. Meals are also provided. There’ll be lucky draws as well, and that’s to motivate more students to experience and enjoy public speaking on campus.

JOIN US! You could help to cultivate interest for public speaking by extending this invitation to friends and students everywhere. Deadline is 20 th May 2011.

Farah's BAM Tournament in Melaka

Here's a smile from Farah, playing for Putrajaya U12 at the recent 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Zone B in Melaka. Awesome experience!

To lovely Farah....great job, darling! I'm very happy for you, dearest...nadia and emir are also very proud of you....we like your spirit and enthusiasm...most importantly, it's the most wonderful gift for dad..we all know it's dad's dream to see all his children play badminton for pleasure, health, and with some luck...tourneys... righttt....so play well, forever, and realize your ultimate dream to become a champion!

As for me, it was my first time driving down to Melaka without my husband around...definitely challenging, but i shall do about anything and everything for my children...I've decided to join the team put up at riverside Hostel Sayang-Sayang, Kampung Ulu. Splendid bargain. It's relaxing sitting by Melaka river, enjoying evening stroll with my children. The state govt has done a good job at preserving the historical sites and old buildings. Of course, the river is now wider and cleaner..compared to my childhood days when i used to follow mak and abah shopping at Kampung Jawa and Kampung Ulu...so we took some photos...awesome...

Salam & Greetings to all.

081110 - I lost my most precious gem and my forever better-half. My husband had to leave for a long break from all the pain that he has endured for approximately 11 years, suffering from end-stage renal failure, infection of the spine as well as heart valve.He has taken God's challenge with elegance and composure, never complained about the ordeal and always treasuring every moment with us with so much love, hugs and kisses, and family vacations. We almost always forgot that he was ill and life was pretty normal much like the rest.

Allah knows best, and we all accept this destiny. Still,this separation hurts because i have loved him for 20 solid years...and have raised our three wonderful kids together. Now that i am a single parent, i only have Allah to help me pull through during tough times. Nevertheless, i have overwhelming and wonderful memories with him that i hang on to so tightly in order to stay strong. As a husband, he has been very loving, caring, supportive of my career, and absolutely adorable. He's my forever 'prince charming', 'knight in a shining armour' and 'high school sweetheart'. I love him very much.

To all my readers, friends, colleagues and students who may only learn about this piece of truth at this very moment, please join me in praying for his most blessed and cozy heavenly slumber. As you read the posts in my blog, please also remember that it is my beloved husband who CREATED this academic blog and generated the concept. Hence, if you have found this blog educational, beneficial, and knowledgeable in any possible way, i owe it all to him.

Everytime i wrote an article for my students and readers, he would be the faithful husband-editor, muse and conscience. I would read aloud my posts and he always completely smiled, nodded in approval, and gave constructive comments...and of course, he was also excited whenever i wrote about family trips and vacations...well..he simply loves holidays...

Lastly, my heartiest gratitude to all of you who have visited us at our humble abode, UNITEN mosque as well as the cemetery. Thanks also for your kind prayers during tahlil and yassin recitals. On his behalf, i pray may Allah bless you always.

Weekend Getaway at Cyberview Lodge Resort

It's so near our humble abode, yet we only got the chance to enjoy a holiday at Cyberview Lodge Resort recently while celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary. Gorgeous tropical beauty with lush greenery!

So, what's great about it? hmm...almost everything in the package...the pool view chalet...the food...and best of all is the swimming pool!!!

It's not like any ordinary swimming pool! With two beautiful man-made waterfalls cascading into it, complete with exotic plants and garden palms around, swimming becomes a total experience.It reminds me of those unforgettable trips to village waterfalls and rivers...fantabulous! Special thanks to my beloved husband for a wonderful holiday inspiration. In fact, he has been thinking about a holiday there all this while, especially everytime he passed by the place on his way to work...

Cyberview lodge shall remain our favourite family destination for a long, long time.

Awesome! The most simple yet splendid birthday celebration ever!

Remind me again..yeah..I am 40 years old..quite matured and successful..most precious achievement is indeed...a cozy and loving family with a beloved husband and three wonderful children. they mean the world to me!

So, we put up two nights at Carlton Holiday hotel and suite, had swimming splendour at the Pusat Akuatik swimming pool, lepak and makan at warung, and best of all...my husband took us all to see...the miraculous city of lights, I-CITY. ohhh..who invented this idea? Amazing and absolutely gorgeous. my most favourite is 'my birthday wish' and the light-trees...i took lots of snapshots and i shall share with my readers in a while, until my daughter uploads the photos in this laptop..which is really not my forte...

Thanks to all thoughtful friends and students who have wished me happiness ++. Thanks a zillion. Life is a gift of precious and tenderly moments with tots and love...

Here's a nightmare, and this is really happening for the FIRST time in my life! Pheeeuh...was i nervous? agitated? well...it's more like the earth was all falling on me...!!! But I'm glad I didn't panic or give up or do anything ridiculous. You see...I know almost nothing about cars, except for the mundane routine visits to the car-wash pit-stops and petrol station.

Last Thursday, I was driving my husband to hospital, at 120km/h. Well, this is pretty normal on SKVE, the new motorway. If you have taken the SKVE, you'd know that driving becomes peaceful and enjoyable with the awesome 3-4 lakes and some panoramic view along the way. So, i didn't bother to check my metre or whatsoever..untill..yupp..untill my husband alerted me about the temperature. My car was running HOT..and I actually didn't understand a thing what he was talking about.

When i finally understood the consequences, i slowed down and ...believe me..I was then travelling at 60 km/h and praying so hard for my car to sustain and 'persevere'. We stopped at the SKVE plaza and the SKVE patrol helped us. Thanks to Mr Shahir and Mr Muzaffar, the mechanic. Earlier, they had given me some instructions over the phone, which was 'scary' and almost impossible... so, for the first time ever, i discovered what the engine looks like, also,the radiator, the water hose...bla..bla..bla...i was like an apprentice learning so much about 'my car' in less than an hour!!!

My CITRA was in a critical state, so we decided not to 'push' her beyond her threshold. So, we drove back to UNITEN, at an unbearable 60km/h without air-cond nor music..alhamdulillah, we reached home safe and sound. So, what actually went wrong? According to SKVE mechanic Muzaffar, the readiator water hose leaked so much, so we had it replaced by mechanic Harry the moment we reached home.

This experience teaches me a very important lesson. Well, my beloved husband has always reminded me to trust PLUS, SKVE, etc. So, should i encounter any kind of problem with my car, I only have to pull 'into' the PLUS or SKVE motorways. Call the helpline number on the ticket, and the patrol will come to my rescue.

Alhamdulillah, this is a very precious tip indeed, and i hope that other lady drivers who may be as naive and blurrrr as i am will remember this note, forever. So ladies...now we know that we can never be alone on SKVE...

Aidilfitri Comes Early at Seri Malaysia

Like last year, we spend our Raya holidays at Hotel Seri Malaysia. It's a simple and comfortable hotel, offering sumptuous Malay dishes for 'berbuka puasa'. Today, i enjoyed a plate of traditional Malay kuih...delicious!!! Dah lama tak jumpe...kuih tepung kelomak, abuk-abuk, kuih ku..and of course, other local favourites i.e. dodol and buah Melaka...my elder sister is coming to visit us tonite. She will bring us 'nasi impit' and 'sambal udang'...hmmm.sedapnya...tomorrow, we shall visit Pak Lang, Pak Ibik and Busu at the village. Not forgetting, we shall break fast at my younger sister's house..so,i shall continue this journablog only after that.

It's lots of fireworks for children and Raya packets (RM2, RM5, RM10, RM50..wow...don't we envy them...) As for everybody else, Raya is a get-together, an opportunity to catch up on exciting events in each other's lives. Raya is always a long holiday for us as this seems to be the best time to take a break from work and urban life, returning to the village and meet as a big happy family. As the saying goes, 'a picture paints a thousand words'. So, here are some photos during Raya celebration 2010.

The Legend International Water Homes (IWH)

I admit. I have been too occupied with my career untill I have found it almost difficult to make room for a break - a family vacation. Indeed, the weekend holiday is a compulsive and desperate getaway. It's to celebrate my children's success at school, an approximate time-out from my busy schedule, and most importantly, a hope for my dearie husband's speedy recovery.Have you checked-out The Legend's IWH? I fell in love with the local 'beauty' immediately. The IWH offers a different holiday experience, tranquility and family quality time. It's home+++.

Like other families, we also love swimming so much, and we usually spend much of our vacation time at the gorgeous pools.

But that takes away a lot of our time...really... the changing, packing, walking to the common pool...not at IWH!!!The pool is indoor and absolutely yours...my children jumped into the pool every other minute, sometimes in home t-shirts and shorts...ha..ha..who cares about the proper swimming attire anymore.

i've been told that the IWH has won Best Architecture award..i couldn't agree more. For a romantic soul like me, the design, layout and exquisite arcitecture is fabulous..they've made it like home and dream vacation. Simply irresistable!! It's total relaxation and serendipity

Another subject that's close to my heart is food.so..what about food? food? food? Frankly, we had a 'feast' at Duyung Restaurant.. thanks to the chefs..the Ramadhan buffet was simply awesome, delicious and most importantly, generous. Of course I shall visit IWH again, even before the next Ramadhan...but they will only have dinner buffets on Saturdays for other times of the year...

Finally, I guess, the 'water-home' concept is simply brilliant. I can't afford to go to the Netherlands, or Maldives, or any other places like it...being Malaysian, i feel thankful and proud that we have The Legend International Water Homes at Lukut...so, wait no further...make a date with the IWH, and you shall know what i mean. It's awesome.

Friendship is Bliss

It has been long that i have not recorded my thoughts and appreciation on this blogpage. Now, i'd like to share a simple poem on friendship for us to ponder. This inspiration came around when i saw the smile and happiness on my beloved husband's face upon receiving his friends, some whom he has not met for 22 years.i'd like to take this opportunity to thank all his school friends who visited him at the hospital, also friends whom we meet elsewhere. My special thanks to Cikgu Azanuddin for his humble presence together with the bubbly and vibrant crowd of ex-MRSMJ ... May Allah bless all of you always. Yupp:) Happiness is everywhere, within our reach...and friendship is indeed the magical capsule that supersedes much of the rest.

Ticket for Success

REFLECT! If you have climbed the tallest mountain, perhaps a breathtaking view of the valley from the peak represents success. If your life has been tormented with deprivation and exclusion, a sense of freedom liberates you almost instantaneously. At school, if you have always dreamed to be a prefect, to join the school basketball team, or even to obtain straight A's for your exams, you'd understand the fulfillment and exhilaration called success.

As success represents its blessings in two and threefold, for school leavers, success can take a student from school to varsity and straight into employability. Nevertheless, is university a valid benchmark for success after school? Can enrolment in university be a personal choice, a turn of fate or even, an alternative to a pathway laden with maturity?

Indeed, success is the sweetest gift of life. It brings bountiful happiness and contentment. Success paves way for a bright and promising future. It opens the threshold of opportunities and offers a glimpse of perfection.

What about you? Why are you here, in UNITEN? Do you believe that university education will make you a successful person? Take time to ponder and you shall find the answer. Tell it to your heart and think aloud – TELL US all on this blogosphere.

Life Begins at 40....?!

Have you ever dreamed to be an ATHLETE? Frankly, it's been my lifetime aspiration, inspiration, and dream-nation, and i'm glad to announce that YEAH!!! I've accomplished it, recently...during UNITEN Track and Field 2010, 7th March 2010.

Of course, I enjoy running and brisk-walking so much, but i've never had the opportunity to really WINNNN. Now, at 40, i represented IKAL for 4X200 veteran, and we became champion... WOW.... fantastic... incredible.. unbelievable.. My children, Farah and EMir, were there at the stadium to witness my triumphant moment, and i guess i have inspired Emir to be a sprinter? runner? sportsman? ha..ha...anything that has to do with sports, will do. Best of all, my COIT students cheered for me as i entered the track...thanks wonderful supporters...LUV u all so much...

thanks to IKAL lovely (shima, Evelyn, Iza, Jiha, Kak Dah, Dr N) and sinewy (Mizi, syafiq, anip,etc) contingent...we made it happen!

Now, is this trivial? Perhaps for some. I always believe that we should NEVER stop dreaming because one fine day, our dream will come true. Of course it takes a little bit of initiative, guts and enthusiasm. I have other dreams and goals to attain, and if they must come around at 50 or 60, so be it. At least, i shall still have lots to cherish at old age..so friends, and the younger generation out there....come on...strive for the best always, and life begins right NOW!

Thank you everybody for an overwhelming support for the conference. It was a great combination of intellect, social network and insightful experience.The target was 70, and a total of 120 have registered and expressed interest in the event. This response is very appropriate for an intellectual event as such. Undergraduates can learn and gather experience not only in their classrooms and lecture theatres, but also from events like this conference.

On behalf of Kelompok Murni, i'd like to congratulate my talented and dedicated committee members. You've done a tremendously awesome job, ladies! Thanks a zillion to all conference presenters and participants. We have shared so much in one day, and i hope that we can meet again next year.

Our 1st National Students' Conference on Women is only a few days away. We shall meet on 6th February and share ideas, insights and observation on matters pertaining to the theme: Working Women.

Thanks for your kindest support. We have targeted for a small audience of 70. Until now, 82 have signed up, and we sincerely hope that we can reach more undergraduates and post-graduates out there. Mr Hafiz, currently an assistant manager with MAERSK, will share his experience working with women and provide the audience with tips on handling everyday challenge at the workplace. Next, Dr Irmi who is a specialist on family health will raise our consciousness on health matters which we tend to neglect in pursuit of career success.

First Day in School

Today, my son Emir enters school. He's very excited about this new experience in Primary school, and so is everybody at home. Since this blog means so much to me, i wish to reserve this space for Emir and his first day in school.

Emir is in one Hamka at Sek Keb Putrajaya Presint 14 (1), and he will go through three weeks of orientation. wow...that's to ensure smooth transition between pre-school and primary school. I was at school during the morning assembly, and i think I like the school climate and aspiration. The teachers are also approachable and helpful, and they promote fun-learning experience. What happens to an UnPopular idea?

Imagine this. You are so motivated to speak up, and share your opinion with friends and all. As you prepare to claim the platform, you also realize one possible challenge. Your so-called brilliant idea may not be popular among the audience, that it may not be well-received, inviting some kind of disagreement and opposition, and you may have to bear unforeseen consequences. What would you do?

In a collectivist society like Malaysia, speakers have to play by tonnes of rules, norms, and discretion. To present an unpopular idea takes courage, persuasion, and creativity. Interestingly, some of these unpopular ideas are wisdoms, insights, and breakthroughs. Hence, to back off is absolutely out of the question!

By theory, most individuals will scrutinize the communication and cultural climate before they present their unpopular ideas. Noelle-Neumann's (1974) 'spiral of silence' explicates that people speak out when ideas are popular and become silent when they start to lose ground. Hmm...this explains why some clever ideas end up silenced and invisible.

What about you??? As much as this situation may trigger social-psychological discomfort, if you could muster enough courage, your seemingly unpopular idea can emerge as a groundbreaking claim. In other words, as there is majority vote, research shows that minority influence can also win people's hearts and conscience. Think positive+++.

The Nervous Speaker

What should you do if you suffer from nervousness every time you are assigned to speak in public? It sounds almost threatening to even admit that public speaking has become so essential nowadays. In other words, you just can't ignore or avoid it.

Particularly for students, oral presentations and speeches make up a handsome portion of the assessment. For working adults, the talent and ability to speak eloquently in public may promise promotions, popularity and influence. Hence, experts advise handling this phenomenon with care as it may impinge your reputation, career and future.

Some people claim that nervousness is a normal experience for beginning speakers. I agree. With adequate exposure and practice, things will look better. Maturity and experience in life mould composure in public speakers.

When I started public speaking, I remember the painful jitters and tremors. I told myself that I should find strategies to prevent the audience from noticing my nervousness. I memorized my speech and presented it with proper modulation of voice and eloquence. Later, I developed the habit of reading so that I could talk and argue on almost anything, with conviction. Some topics may be difficult, so I took the trouble to prepare and do sufficient research.

There are loads of advice on how to handle nervousness in public speaking in the market. Nevertheless, you must select the most appropriate for your personality and oratory skills.The list can go on, but does any of the tips to combat nervousness work for you? Do you actually need 'prescription' or does the remedy actually develop with age and familiarity?

Whatever your public speaking experience entails, please remember that nervousness shouldn't impede determination to explore this realm of elegance. I wish you all the best in your future speaking endeavours.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet/train vibrant and interesting personalities at the Sime Darby Management Training Academy,Carey Island. I was there for one week, and it was very enjoyable and rejuvenating. Carey Island's greenery and historical buildings is an everlasting memento. Here's a photo of Hatter's Castle with breathtaking colonial architecture, lawn mowed to perfection, spacious balcony for evening tea, and awesome interior.

For writing skills, one of the assignments was to design a tourist leaflet to promote Carey Island beach, a very much neglected and secluded area. It was indeed an eye-opening deliberation.

Here's a glimpse of classroom climate. Well, my students are absolutely lovely, committed and talented. One week on Carey Island feels like work+vacation. They are the Sime Darby Management Apprentices, and I wish them success.

Who Loves Dancing?

My boy, Emir, loves dancing to the beat, and he had a marvellous time at his Q-Dees graduation concert last Saturday performing Michael Jackson's 'Beat It'. It was a beautiful fusion of two mega favourites - Jaiho accompanied by Indian dance, and of course, Beat it. Frankly, I was surprised to see my little boy's talent. I thought it was so natural, and adorable. The crowd also liked him and they said it was so cute...His teacher did not choreoraph the steps and left it all to his 'feeeeeel'... i want to thank Q-dees Putrajaya Presint 15 especially Miss Hana, for allowing my precious boy to explore his interest and talent in a very creative way. Perhaps, I could share this moment to treasure with my readers in my blogosphere, in support of children's creative development. In short, being excellent in academic in indispensable, but we should also make room for creativity and freedom of expression. Enjoy the video:)

Really, i can't wait to grow just one year older and wiser. This 2nd October, i turn 39! and that's just one year to 40???! i heard that my kids have made plans, and whatever they are, i know they're gonna be awwwwwwesome. Just 3 days after that is my wedding anniversary. on the 8th, i shall be in Penang island presenting my research, and i hope to meet my friends from primary school, college, university, and previous workplace & conferences, there. Hmmm...how lovely this beautiful month of October has turned out to be, for me and a very simple me. So, to the rest who will celebrate their birthdays in October, cheers....and let's make life all the more wonderful and successful yeah...

Life is a bed of carnations

Have you heard that I was down with dengue fever recently? May be or may be not...let's just say it's a terrible experience! My two children were also warded at the same hospital, together with my husband who was in ICU (post surgery) ...hmmm..can you almost believe this traumatic journey in my simple life? Haaah:) I'm just so glad it's nearly over, and we are all recovering in one way or another.

Now...I have always loved tulips ( dreaming for a holiday in the Netherlands). Nevertheless, when I was at the hospital, I noticed that visitors would come with roses and carnations...never tulips, yeah... But, why roses? Haven't we heard that 'life is not a bed of roses....'? So, i thought carnations would better represent our well wishes at times like this. I browsed the net, at least the Wikipedia and I nearly couldn't believe my hunch...yupp:) A Carnation is definitely a special flower expressing love, fascination, gratitude and distinction. It's especially worn on Mothers' day and at weddings.

To quote the Wikipedia: "It is the national flower of Spain, and the provincial flower of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It is also the symbol of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution. The state flower of Ohio is a scarlet carnation." etc.etc.

The thing is...when you are sick, you'd want people around to care for you. So, many thanks to all our caring and loving doctors and nurses at KPJ Shah Alam. Can't imagine how we'd face the challenge without your kind support. Also, I wish to extend my gratitude to all my friends from IKAL and MURNI/ ILMU who have visited as well as prayed for me. Your moral support has given me ultimate strength to quickly recover and enjoy life as always. I would also like to express my gratitude to all my husband's friends who have come from near and far. Thanks to all the caring teachers from SK Purajaya Presint 16(2) for your kind prayers and concern for my daughter, Nadia. My heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the heart team at Institut Jantung Negara, Malaysia (IJN). I pray endlessly may God bless your team of dedicated and compassionate doctors, nurses, physiotheraphists, and admin staff with bountiful happiness, success and health.

Two years back, my husband was told that both of his heart valves were seriously damaged due to infection. It was devastating news, and to think of the two years of torment he had to endure, living without the valves...well...only God understands best.

God the Almighty imposes challenge on human, and He has his own reasons that we don't question. We accepted the diagnosis, secured an appointment for operation, and prayed so much for His mercy and compassion.

All in all, three different results obtained from three different specialists led to one similar solution - that my husband had to opt for valve replacement. Nevertheless, the open-heart surgery on 2nd March 2009 revealed vice versa. It seemed that after two years, the valves had slightly recuperated, and the operation team led by Mr Pau and assisted by Mr Khadri only had to repair the valves. Alhamdulillah, MIRACLES happen to us all.

After two days at ICU, my husband was already breathing without much difficulty. To Mr Pau and Mr Khadri, thank you for extending your patience and expertise. May you obtain blessings from God the Almighty for your kindness.

Here, i would like to take the opportunity to thank IJN members, IJN Foundation and IJN-related and contributing parties (esp. kebajikan masyarakat) for helping to save another heart, another life, another hope, and another love. I believe I speak for all the patients at IJN (Adik Emy, adik Amirul, Christine, all d aunties, etc...), and their beloved families. I have faith that the nation also hopes for the best for IJN.

I met two IJN Foundation executives who are actively involved in fund-raising initiatives in order to help less fortunate heart patients financially and morally, Ms Siti and Mr Farid. I have this to say - What you are doing for us all is ultimately noble, and i pledge to help IJN Foundation in whatever way i can.

Is there justice and fairness for our children?

Adults understand (but may rebel occasionally) that somehow, life has its ups and downs, opportunities and unforeseen circumstances, luck and misfortune. Some are rich when others are poor and secluded; some are in joy when others endure endless suffering and oppression. Today, life may seem like you're opening Pandoras's box, when tomorrow can be a totally different picture.

The question is, should we drag children into this paradox? dilemma? confusion?

After writing my supposedly-last article, i believe i must agree with my friend Ritz Chewan that may be, i was facing writer's block..SO, what makes this come-back?

Apparently, my beloved children, and my fight for justice for all children. Now, I shall narrow doen this scope of discussion and invite you to consider the opportunities that schools create for our children....and ironically, deprive almost simultaneously.

I observe that my children love schooling and they participate in a bunch of activities and competitions. They represent school for story telling and choir competitions. They also spend time away from home joining PBSM camping trips as well as prefect activities. All in all, only one dream remains unfulfilled - 100m dash challenge! My children run a bit at home, and they love the backyard. But 100m event ultimately brings a different triumphant experience.

So, here comes the irony. I learned (the hard way) that at Primary Four, the school has obviously already eliminated my child's dream to even participate in 100m event. Farah got 2nd in 'saringan' but DID NOT end up in the team. The teacher's choice was no other that her best friend who got 5th place in 'saringan'...???

I tried to discuss the predicament with the teacher, counting on the notion of realizing children's dreams, and highlighting on the aspirations of the National Philosophy of Education to provide adequate exposure and development for Jasmani, Emosi, Rohani and Intelek.

And what did i discover??? The teachers have already shorlisted and identified the school runners, and they are more than happy to stick to their reputable list so that their 'rumah sukan' will become champion, and that other children's dreams to indeed try their talent in the event go to pieces, shatter in utter frustration.

If you have been in school enduring the cruelty of this system...i believe you'd understand how bitter this truth really is. If you are a parent,consoling your child to now be contented with running around the backyard, or completing loops at the nearby stadium...we may be in the same boat.

Think about this. The world is already cruel to children in so many different ways. I personally think that killing children's dreams- like this- is massacre!

Some may say that a child, like adults, can slowly and eventually grasp this bitter reality. Afterall, sports is only one dimension of educational and social development. My child can accept the disappointing result of my discussion wiht the teacher, but i wish i didn't have to have garnered all my strength to finally be defeated by a ridiculous system like it!

100 m dash....of course...to be included brings a wealth of happiness and experience. To be secluded...because of the so-called lame system... is evidence of ignorance to children's rights to develop potentials and enjoy childhood.

At least, that's what I think!

So, what do you have to say about this paradoxical, unfortunate interpretation and implementation of our esteemed National Philosophy of Education?

Seriously...and sadly. I have nor been writing for a while. Those days, i used to think and write almost simultaneously.

Can it be that i talk more than i write now? Hmmmm..not quite.

Perhaps thinking and pondering over matters is already sufficient to make my day...really???

Okay. It may have a bit to do with mood...mood...and mood:) I seem to fancy reading more than writing recently. Perhaps, it is also a priority that i read and think more everyday in order to quickly finish my studies. Do i still write to invite others to think on interesting topics that strike my mind? Perhaps not as much. Nevertheless, be rest-assured that i will make my return to this blogosphere when the new semester comes around.

Eversince i moved into my new humble abode at MURNI, i have been deprived of internet communication - can't imagine so many months without internet access.

Today, life has returned to normal and i feel so much alive:) and rejuvenated. After a whole day at work, coming back home tired and restless, i now return to the luxury of internet connection.

Those days without internet were almost unbearable - no online reading, no emails, no access to blogging. Arrrrgh:( Thanks to broadband technology - we can now meet more often in this blogging community.

Student Crisis

Alert!If you notice any kind of change to your behaviour, attitude and response, any abnormal or extraordinary pattern in the way you react and respond to simple daily chores - check things out and reflect. Why? This may very well be manifestation of crisis which needs immediate attention or help. Unless changes happen intentionally, it is best to be cautious and take the necessary steps to bring things back to normal.

In layman's term, crisis can be defined as conflict, problems, dilemma, anxiety, etc. In this predicament, an individual will not be able to use the common and familiar coping strategies and tension may arise. Common types of crisis include financial , identity, as well as relationship crisis. At university, decline in academic performance, peer pressure and conflicting priorities may pose an obstacle in the everyday pursuits. Hence, crisis erupts and the individual becomes easily agitated, disorganized and hostile.

Can crisis be avoided? Well, some matters in life are simply unpredictable and we may become victims of circumstances. Nevertheless, I believe that we can prepare for crisis by observing a few simple procedures daily:

1. maintain good friendship and relationship with people around so that they can alert you about any peculiar patterns of attitude or behaviour

2. whenever you are upset or disturbed, do not suppress your feelings but try to find a suitable way to express your fruestrations, and anger. Some people scream!!!, write in the diary or talk to somebody close and trusted

3. have faith in your life and future. Believe that God has created different pathways for different people in the different pursuits of success. If you meet an impasse, perhaps it's time to try another solution - opt for the road not taken and less travelled...

4. never give up! Seek for help and assistance. You should never be by yourself in circumstances like this... contact your friend, roommate, lecturer, mother, or counsellor, for help.
Lastly, crisis lurks in every corner of our challenging life. If we are prepared for it, there's hope that we won't fall prey to emotional outbursts or immature decisions. At UNITEN, there is a special club called PRS that trains its members to help peers under pressure. Of course, if they figure that the situation requires professional help, you will be referred to the counsellor or anybody more senior like the lecturers or the advisor.

Recently, the PRS at UNITEN organized a knowledge-sharing forum entitled: Student Crisis. Congratulations to the organizing committee. I think it's a brave and noble effort to carry out such an initiative. Students should be exposed to realities like this in order to better equip themselves with coping mechanisms to handle unforeseen circumstances.

New Year means a lot to us. Well, if it's not significant, why would we have all the joyous celebrations, mind-blowing aspirations, and absolute resolutions.

Most importantly, 2009 is not just ANOTHER year. What do you think?

To me, twelve months is like a grace period for many who have yet to accomplish goals ... like me:) It's a lucky charm for friends who are starting a new life... and a sweet challenge for graduates and final years when it comes to employability. Looks like the job market is getting all the more competitive these days.

360 days is like an endless to-do list reminding us of responsibilities and deadlines. Fine, that does justice to our pledge to quality and productivity. But, all work and no play makes John a realllllll dull boy..so, let's take a portion of it and make plans for some holidays, vacations and celebrations....

Just a final thought for us to ponder...the tag 'NEW' may be so cliche, but if it's the accepted expression of goodness and goodwill, why not cherish it, and make things happen. Nevertheless, it does not take a NEW year to make us committed, dedicated and alert. In fact, every breath we inhale promises hope, happiness, and wisdom.

Let's hope this NEW year brings joy, prosperity and friendship to us all.

Mad Rush:) at Seng Heng BBB

Hmm...everybody says that ..."rezeki ade di mane-mane...." and this is so very true!

I left Az-Zahrah at around 9.30 this morning and I saw quite a queue in front of Seng Heng BBB. Hmmm..out of curiosity, my husband stopped to see what's so attractive there. And GuEsSsSsSsSsSs what...it's their great opening and there were great items at only RM10.oo. I nearly couldn't believe it untill the store opened at 10.30 a.m. and people entered 10 by 10. My husband and i were in the third group and we prayed may our items remain available.

Since it was my first experience ever, i quickly learned that we should be among the first or we won't grab the items we really want. Some people came with three or four cards so they went back with a very good deal. As for me, we only had two member cards so we grabbed two items - an iron and an electric kettle...had aimed for a blender really:(

Untill we left, there were still so many people with so much hopes. I'm so thankful to God that I passed by the area...never have i heard about RM 10 deals....of course I rush for Jusco Members Deals....but this is an altogether different magical experience. Consumers should keep an eye on great offers like this! and an excellent way is ...........to watch out for Grand Openings. I guess.

So, good luck to all. At times like this, when economy is just not so assuring, we reallly have to spend wisely on almost anything. I'm always skeptical about "offers" and "on sale" strategies..but this one is definitely real...truly rewarding and satisfying.

Ladies and gentlemen, friends and students,

If you know him, you'd miss him dearly...coz he's so talented, pleasant and cheerful . He really makes your day everytime and anytime. That's Allahyarham Saiful Rizal bin Meor Abdul Melek , an outstanding student in my ITCB class, an eloquent speaker and debater, a truly jovial personality and company. For EDSoc. members, you should remember that he was with us to support the debut of EDSoc. as he was the president of Kelab Bahas UNITEN....Well...when you see him debating (he's a Malay debater)....you just admire his style and light-hearted presentation....everybody likes him so much...:)

Friends and students...Saiful has left us. I knew about it this morning when Pak Arip called me to convey the sad news. Frankly, I miss him so much and i pray that he will rest in a peaceful and heavenly slumber. I hope you could join me in the prayers....For a truly nice guy...well, he only deserves the very best..amiiiiiin. To my Muslim readers, mohon dibacakan al-Fatihah dan dihadiahkan pahalanya kepada Allahyarham Ahmad Saiful Rizal bin Mior Abdul Melek. Semoga rohnya dicucuri rahmat dan kasih sayang Allah yang maha Esa. InsyaAllah. Hopefully others could do the same in your very own respectul ways.

2nd UNITEN Public Speaking Competition

The event was fun and fascinating with a good line of talented public speakers and also, budding leaders. I'd say that the EDSoc. committee has chosen very apt and competitive themes - semi-finals : A Malaysian Mind, Finals - "Mickey Mouse" as President. Well, it's just timely that our speakers (known for their intelligence) apply a bit of wit, humour and persuasive influence here.

Most importantly, many thanks to all our participants. The event wouldn't be a success without you. The original number expressing interests is undoubtedly higher than the turn up during registration..nevertheless...isn't that a common phenomenon already in speaking competitions?? So, I'd like to salute all those who came for the preliminary round this morning. It's not so easy to accept this oratory challenge, and you've won the first battle. To Nadia, all the best in your final semester, and may your strong will find you a good career path. To Dinesh, it's great to have you around in the preliminary round. We shall meet again next year, okay.

Now, since this is a national public speaking competition, we have received good response from our neighbouring universities. Thanks to UKM, UNIKL, TARC, for joining us in the challenge. Earlier, we also received participation from UITM, UTEM and KLIUC, but they had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances...i heard.

So, wonder who got into Finals? Yuppp:) Congratz, Rifdy from ENNF 103 section 11 - the judges truly love your ideas. Azali from UNIKL raised good concerns as well. Consolation prizes were given to Thava from TARC and Nuruddin from UNIKL. 2nd runner-up was Wan (UNITEN) with his lively and energetic performance. Ist runner-up was Arul from UKM. He explored a very critical and timely perspective in light of the theme.

And.....the champion this year is no other than Hemalan (UNITEN)...yupp:) He not only convinced, but also made a point to entertain the judges and audience with his cogent arguments and intellectually stimulating discussion..shared some fun and laughter as well....I'd say Hemalan has a very attractive oral style which is conversational and also, persuasive. Congratulations, dear:) You have definitely done a wonderful job.

Thanks to all our judges, of course. Their committment and expertise really helps to make the event a truly rewarding experience.

Lastly, I want to say that I sincerely enjoyed the semester with you. I think you know that I was very busy studying and completing my PhD projects. Nevertheless, I alwiz looked forward to meeting all of you in class. It's always rejuvenating, lively and satisfying. Class was more than merely ENNF 103. An undergraduate journey begins with high hopes, zest and commitment. Lectures and tutorials, labs and projects, make life hectic enough that some may have to sacrifice time for fun and excitement. This goes on for some good 10-12 weeks before the exams come around. The final exam is like an ultimatum - the final determinant to the undergraduate pursuit throughout the academic semester.

As if this is not enough torment, undergraduates - final year and foundation students alike, are confronted with a dilemma - that it may not be as easy to get a job when they finish their studies(unless the country's economy booms and foreign investment soars, etc..) Newspaper articles and research reports caution us about employability in every way. Universities conduct trace studies and produce statistics on graduate employability.

Let's admit that gone are the days when even the highest CGPA can guarantee a job almost immediately. Nevertheless, the academic scroll is still very important because it also means you will be shortlisted for rewarding scholarships, awards, as well as job interviews.

Please prepare for employability early, as soon as you hear about it:) Think about this - having spent almost 5-6 years in a good and competitive university, isn't it ironic that a great mind with excellent CGPA, a stunning personality, and a host of soft skills illustrating leadership, team work and communicative competence, can't bring you close to a decent job! Of course you WILL get d job!

On this note, cutting-edge graduates prepare for the final selection interview. This is the time for you to articulate your skills and abilities, demonstrate your cutting-edge qualities, and impress your panel of interviewers. As mentioned by Crosby (1999), "No matter how skilled students may be, those skills will not lead to a job if potential employers do not know applicants have them."

I remember a comment posted by "Zack" earlier with regard to this employability odyssey. She succeeded in her final selection interview not only because of her work experience, but also her active involvement in campus activities that have made her more matured, confident, and ready to undertake real-life challenge.

Well, life is really about experiencing a lot of the ups and downs, success and turbulence, etc. Make time for friendship, interpersonal skills and leadership. Join clubs and societies, competitions, and speak UP. Brilliant ideas are supposed to be shared with the rest. If you want to make a difference, in the near future or later, you should start now. The odyssey can be a winding, less travelled road, or a trodden path - but you have a share in paving for a more reassuring future. The onus is really on you.

ok.I may not be the best person to comment on this. Hence, I'd like to invite opinion and feedback from the blogging community who are indeed at the receiving end of this employability craze - readers and writers in this blogosphere who have been recruiting, employing, selecting candidates, and those graduates who have successfully passed the test of the final selection interview- please drop us a line or two in response to this issue.

No Traffic Marmalade???

We're back:) Now let's check out the KL roads...hmmmm...clear! very clear! For once, we enjoyed travelling by car. Otherwise, we had always imagined travelling in neutron tube, or invisible jet plane, just to reach our beloved shopping mall - Mid Valley Megamall...gosh: was it barely ten minutes??? Felt like a jiffy...really...

The shopping mall was not crowded at all. Seemed like there were too many shop outlets compared to shoppers...not proportionate huh??? The queues at Carrefour and Jusco were most astounding...two three people in every row (that's including me)??

Now, what am I saying? Yupp:) i really miss this slow,old pace in life...free from the rat-race and hustle bustle of modern society...free from congested malls and roads... free from endless waits at LRT stations, bus terminals, and cashier counters....

No more traffic marmalade! (jam)

Nevertheless, there's one thing I don't appreciate when there's no crowd at shopping malls...correct me if I'm wrong...thought I saw the endless rows of blouses and beautiful dress before raya at Jusco..today, everything has vanished into thin air...where have they gone? disappeared? oh no!!! YES to no shoppers! BIG NO to no more attractive items!

So I ended up having breakfast at Mac D, lunch at Chicken Rice shop, and killing time at Gardens...nice quartet playing Raya numbers at Gardens concourse...particularly the "balik kampung" raya song originally from Allayarham Sudirman Haji Arshad.

Welcome home, everybody. Glad you've all arrived safe and sound.

I'm one year Older, Wiser and Stronger:)

I celebrated my 38th birthday on Hari Raya Kedua, 2nd day of Eid. It's a wonderful feeling, and everybody important in my life showered me with wishes and prayers. I know that some actually pray for my health and happiness every other moment, but it's just this special day that makes everything extraordinary.

I visited my parents' humble abode and this brings back memories, definitely. They have left me for quite some time already; and I miss them so very much. I guess some of you who share the same predicament would understand how I really feel...Nevertheless, their spirit, aspirations and endless love and care lives in me in every step i make, till eternity. Last year, I celebrated my birthday with a kenduri. But that was still during Ramadhan, and the whole family sat together and prayed for ultimate protection and happiness for our beloved parents, may they rest in heavenly slumber.

Thanks to all my family members, friends and beloved students who have wished me a very memorable Happy Birthday on my birthday. I pray may God bless all of you with plentiful happiness and rezeki, too. Alhamdulillah, I have a very lively and happy family and very enjoyable and rewarding job, indeed.

So, I'm 38..he..he..2 more years to be 40...ouchhhh! yah! too bad - I have not really accomplished much in my career:) but that's really beyond my control. I shall continue to work hard. Pray that my Dean finally acknowledges my integrity, loyalty and quality that I have put for the faculty and university. It's mostly in his recommendations...everybody knowwwwwwws that!!! Sob! Sob! This is my 8th year in UNITEN, and i'm still only a lecturer by position. Others who are younger and many years younger have all been promoted...but not me:) Let's give this place till end of this year, before I succumb to depression, frustration and exasperation! huh:) For now, I shall be sttrrrrrrong.

The Roads are Innocent!

It's Raya season again, and we shall celebrate the good spirit of togetherness, love and good faith for one month. (If you want to talk about shopping, I'd say you should have done it before Raya sale...during Malaysia's mega sale freak-out!!! Fantastic discounts and ever-best prices:)

Other than celebrations, what does Raya season entail? Haunting memories of unprecendented death, loss of beloved family members and close friends, all due to road accidents? Al-Fatihah to all who have succumbed to this major tragedy. This writing may take you to a corner which is in fact gloomy and lamentable. Nevertheless, it should remind each and every driver of his and her responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users this year. Let's put an end to this agony -fatality and serious injuries due to road accidents.

With so much of the rakyat's money being pumped into road construction and perfection, road accidents still haunt each and every cautious driver on the road - like me. Problems like potholes and winding roads have long been rectified, competency and skills in driving is kinda out of the question with the mushrooming driving academies. So, eliminate all these professional and technical factors from the list, we're left with one absolute truth - man's arrogance, selfishness and reckless driving. Of course these culprits are minority, but it takes only one of them to mess with our precious lives!

It's not even the eve of Aidilfitri, yet I have already witnessed two major road accidents on my way back to my 'kampung'. What about you? What about the news in the daily newspapers reporting death statistics? Talk to the tow-truck drivers, and they will be able to paint a true picture of the scenario...If this is true, then common drivers like any of us, and road users should exercise more caution while driving. Let the traffic police do their job and contain the problem of selfish and reckless driving. These drivers should be given an ultimate penalty.

Most importantly, we shall not stoop to their level and join the bandwagon. Plan our journey so that we don't have to rush to our dream destinations. Any sight of these agonizing drivers - practice no other than DEFENSIVE DRIVING! It may save your life and those of your beloved if you react with more patience and avoid fatal retaliation. Let them speed if they must. Don't succumb to the alarming statistics of road accidents during Raya.

Readers, writers, and bloggers...Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all Muslims, and happy holidays to our non-Muslim friends. Love your life. You may live to witness one more success, one more joy, and one more breakthrough in human history, if you only practise 'defensive driving'. Young Inventors - Inspiring Nation

If you have watched Little Einsteins, you must have heard Quincy saying this line "imagination - transformation". And I am talking about Playhouse Disney at Channel 613.Hmmm... this has inspired many young scientists among us to put our dreams to challenge and make them come true. Even ludicrous and simple ideas can prove useful to mankind if they are materialized into inventions, creations and indispensable gadgets...right:)

Well, an excellent way to have more young inventors in the country is to provide research grants and viable platforms to showcase their talent and ability. This includes competitions at school and national level. Without these thrusts, our talented young scientists and inventors will not emerge at a rate that we would want to see in this ambitious decade. Without educational incentives like scholarships and sponsorships, many budding talents will remain in the background and disappear in no time. Hence, we should take rigorous steps to promote science, discovery and inventions in schools, universities as well as among the general public.

Recently, UNITEN organized a Robogamez competition where students and undergraduates compete to win the trophy. The young inventors displayed their master robots and accepted the challenge of the abominable maze. It was an interesting event and a very enriching experience indeed. I took my children to witness the invaluable display of intelligence, and I hope they will become like one of those participants one day.

Here, I'm proud to announce that my IEP students Nga and Tho, both from Vietnam, won first prize for the internal category and third prize for the national category. Their robot named "Lost" pulled through the crazy maze challenge, battling hurdles and obstacles, and made it to the finishing line with triumph and dignity:) "Lost" has made us all very proud indeed. The national champion was UPM and runner-up was MMU. UNITEN organized a Sumo Robot competition last year, and I wonder what exciting theme the engineering society will come up with next year...hmmm...pet robots, may be....

Last month, my nephew, a Form 2 student at Sek Men Telok Mas, won the state level championship for his solar-stove invention. The UNITEN team is currently preparing for a world solar car challenge. And at home-sweet-home, my precious boy, Emir, successfully transformed his 'pet' dragon into a domestic robot via the power of "imagination-transformation" - and this is an inspiring and brave start to borderless curiosity cum discovery.

In Pursuit of Scholarly Writing for ENNF 103

Hi 2 all,

Great to know that you're checking the blogosphere for updates. Yupp:) The reading-response essay is around the corner, and I'm sure each and every one of you inspiring and budding writers is busy reading, debating and writing, something, somewhere, somehow.

The miracle about reading is the indispensable wisdom and values we collate over the years. Better still, some of us can memorize some wonderful lines and phrases, some shocking statistics,picking up some expressions enhancing the effectiveness of of our writing initiative...Hmmm...

Points to ponder:

1. If you want to make your paragraph interesting and attractive to the readers, a masterpiece they can relate to almost immediately - try inserting one famous quotation or two. Hopefully it's not a cliche. Try quoting big contemporary names, renowned events, or so.

2. If you want to elevate your writing and make it more scholarly, you'll need some extent of research. Here, you will have to use in-text citations in your paragraph to mention the ideas taken from your literature review or reading articles. In other words, you have to convince your readers that you are not only immersed and engrossed in your own world with your high-flying ideas, but you also read other researchers' works and acknowledge their kind contribution to the said field.

p.s. check the pages on in-text citation in Chapter 3 to know what I mean.

To start the ball rolling in this blogosphere, perhaps somebody can start sharing thoughts, criticisms, or observation, on this fantastic topic : ROBOTS ***remember to include in-text citations!

The celebration will be launched by the Vice Chancellor Y Bhg Prof Ir Dato' Dr Mashkuri bin Yaakob. Actually, we had "aerobicton" in the morning with three instructors - kak Mas, Mardian, and Ali...oh my God! but I'm used to the regime, so I really enjoyed it. SOme of my colleagues had to just watch some rigorous and energetic steps..like the "skipping" and "kickboxing". Otherwise, I guess the aerobics which went on for one hour is a fantastic idea to start our day and reminisce good old memories with those evergreen Merdeka songs..ha..ha.. What else did we have...yupp:) We also had Wani (MURNI President) and Fana (Final Year MURNIan) on stage. They really did all MURNIans proud with their SAJAK Merdeka. They had loads of compliments from Prof Yem, Dr Nash, Pn Mas, Mr Mardian, and almost everybody. Good job gurlz. Hmm...keep practising with those drama and vocal effects. We'll have MURNI Merdeka Nite Celebration '08 next week. p.s. We are all MALAYSIANS, and we stand by each other to strengthen the nation. Living in this rich diversity comprising multiple racial backgrounds, religous beliefs, cultural practices, inclinations and talents, we should move steps forward by acknowledging and respectind each other. Bersatu kita TEGUH, bercerai kita Roboh. Good Luck MALAYSIANS. May this country bring all the joy, blessings, rezeki, rahmat, peace, harmony and unity to us all. Amiiiiiiiin.

My Idol - My Hero

I took my children to see WALL-E last Thursday. I was convinced of the value of the movie after hearing comments from Rifdy in class, and Vivek. Well, we gave it a shot...and hey - not disappointing at all.

Particularly to my own students, you've grown up so successful. Some may have only entered university. Others are now already doing their degree, reached final year, and some have just graduated yesterday or today at Dewan Seri Sarjana, UNITEN. My ex-students at UKM Engineering and Medical School have now contributed so much to the country, and my own ex-UNITEN students are successful engineers and business graduates. Behind your successful stories, there could perhaps be a hero, or an idol, who helps to pave your pathway to success? If it's not too much to ask, perhaps we can share some of your own thoughts and reflection here, in my blog.

For a start, my daughter Farah was wondering if she could share with all my readers her hero - WALL-E. And here it is...her entry taken from the EMFANA journoblog. Hi there i'm Princess Farah, ok today I want to talk about WALL-E. WALL-E is great but it's not only great - it's fantastic or really really fantastic. WALL-E lives on earth and did i tell you that the earth is so dirty and has many rubbish.People do not live on the earth anymore because it has so many rubish and it's so filthy.

WALL-E always picks trash and put it in his tummy and it becomes a square.People throw things and toys that are useful,beautiful and still new. WALL-E has a pet cockroach, and i guess that there is a million of cockroach beacause it's so dirty. And did i tell you that the people live in a spaceship and the ship is so beautiful and the ship parks at outerspace.The ship stays in space for 700 years - wow! that's so long.In the ship there is a swimming pool,cafes,juice shop and so many more.The people in the ship are so so fat, obese exactly, because they always sit and eat and drink,eat and drink.And can you imagine that the babies are fat too that is so hard to imagine.

i think this movie shows us that human are so lazy, selfish and careless. They don't care about the earth. They make the earth dirty, and when there is too much rubbish, they run away. WALL-E is the hero. He saves the earth because he cleans the earth untill people can live on earth, again. The end. Brilliant movie, thank you mom and dad. I want to see another movie like Meet Dave?! High School Musical 3 ?!!!!!!!!:)

Graduation Day at UNITEN

Superb day witnessing UNITEN graduates receiving their scrolls and pledging to contribute to a more successful community. With their knowledge, talent and commitment, they will now make us all proud -the university via ALUMNI and of course, our beloved country via employability. Most of them have got a job, somewhere, and Dr Chua from ALUMNI has promised to declare the good statistics very soon. As always, the common comment among the successful ones is that they may not get 3.5 and above, but their soft skills, particularly communication and leadership grant them their dreams:) .

With the convocation banner up for a while at Dewan Seri Sarjana, I do hope the juniors will feel inspired to study hard and qualify for the Vice Chancellor Award (3.5 and above) and complete their studies observing a good balance of hard skills and soft skills. If employability statistics can't convince our undergraduates to participate in class and campus activities, rather than merely burying themselves in tonnes of books, I don't know what else to do or say. I surely pray for the best.(notice sponge bob in our crowd??!)

I was the master of ceremony, and I felt proud helping out in making the event flow smoothly without any hiccups. Most importantly, I certainly treasure the smiles from my ex-students who have finally breathed air of satisfaction and contentment. I'm very happy for their success. Down the line were Dolah, Azlan, Daniel, Jason, etc. To commemorate the grandeur of the day, I have included here pictures of Haidir (4th place UNITEN Public Speaking Competition 2007) and on top of the article, my photo with 3 outstanding ladies from ILMU : Syanita, Shuhada, and Amy. English Debate Society (a group of people sharing the same interests/ enthusiasm).

This is a great day, one that marks a meaningful journey for oratory endeavour in UNITEN, the beginning of successful episodes for undergraduates who see the importance of persuading, convincing, and influencing via speaking. 17th August 2006, is a day to remember, indeed. The acronym EDSoc. was coigned, and it shall remain forever.

EDSoc. is more than a complete package for an undergraduate who wants to improve his speaking skills in English.

Its main aim is to put together speaking enthusiasts, English speaking undergraduates, and those who wish to see themselves as university debaters and public speakers. One of the main concerns is to ensure multi-racial population - and we've discovered this yardstick viable in UNITEN, where the language of instruction is English. Here, almost half if not all of the students are eloquent and comfortable using the English language in their everyday conversation, discussion, and presentation.

The president, Navin, and Vice President, Vivek have worked so hard, gaining strong support from all EDSocians to make it happen at EDSoc. The thrust of EDSoc. is debating. We organize debate workshops and tourneys for all to learn and appreciate debating as a skill, science and art. Debating alumnus, Yoong How, helped us run the first debate workshop. Thanks:) dear. Together, we've taken our debating teams to various platforms and places. The teams have participated in tourneys in IIUM, MMU, UITM Perlis, and they have travelled as far as NUS Singapore, to experience what debating entails in real life. Until today, the senior members have successfully formed four teams, and i must say I'm so proud of them.

Other than debating, EDSoc. also grooms telents for public speaking. We organized our first Public Speaking competition in 2007, and it was a very exciting one, indeed. The champion was Hemalan, and runner-up was Sneha. The themes were "Black is White" and "Opening Pandora's Box". This year, we shall organize a National Public Speaking Competition, and we surely hope to see huge participation from the undergraduates. Besides, we also send our members to join the Star-HSBC National Public Speaking Competition.

EDSoc. will be able to contribute to more undergraduates if we only obtain greater participation and support in terms of membership and participation. In my own class, I always take the opportunity to advise my students to make time for EDSoc. Undergraduates should realize that communicative competence is essential in today's employability challenge, and that it is not limited to the English classes. There are other avenues, like EDSoc., where undergraduates can improve their English speaking skills.

Lastly, to all EDSocians, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. To the rest, we welcome your membership and contribution. Let's all grow with EDSoc. and reap the benefits of active involvement in campus activities. Be a debater, public speaker, leader, active member, and you help to make life more colourful, successful and meaningful at UNITEN.

UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2008

Hi everybody. Do you know that this is the forth time UNITEN organizes this prestigous event? Well, rowing used to be between Oxford and Cambridge universities, the two giants in the scholarly world. Now, it has come to Putrajaya, and it has not only involved local schools (SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), 16(1), 11(1) and SMK Alam Shah), private and public universities (UM, UTM, USIM, UIA, USM, UMS, UTHM, UNITEN, MMU, UNIKL), but also received participation from universities in Singapore (NUS), the Philippines (Ateneo), Hong Kong (HK Baptist & City U), and Japan (Shiga).

Among the VVIPs at the URI 2008 were Y Bhg Dato' Sri Che Khalib, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Y Bhg Prof Ir Dr Mashkuri, Vice Chancellor, UNITEN, His Excellency Alejandro Fernandez, Ambassador of Peru to Malaysia, and His Excellency Masahiko Horie, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia. Like many other events, we also had entertainment from local artists, particularly Aris Ariwatan...(he also sang my favourite numbers....hmmmmm.

Were the results surprising? So...so....may be...Shiga University, Japan, for example, won so many medals until most of us thought they would win the overall championship. UNITEN has definitely improved its performance and standing at second place, and has done us proud with its accomplishments (Well done Seelan: my ex-student). Nevertheless, UTM was the overall champion, for the third time. WOW!:) They must be really strong, complete with strategies and techniques. Let's quickly learn from them, ya...

Now, how do I know about all these? Of course, I helped to emcee the event. It was a tiring, but interesting job coz I got to see the results before any of the spectators or the vvips could take a peek...he..he..i'm not sure how apt a female voice helps to set the stage, though...something less (5%) than ESPN commentators, or the Olympics in Beijing, I bet.

As for the rest, please take time to participate and support campus activities. It may take away your weekend or holidays, but experience as such will help you in so many ways, ultimately. Academic takes care of the hard-skills or content. As for soft-skills, it's something we can only polish and develop via involvement in leadership, competitions, and participation in activities, clubs and societies.

We shall meet again next year, in the 5th UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2009. Hopefully:) *** after reading the comments from anonymuos and maisarah, guess I will help to promote the event via my blog.

I was at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) yesterday - 6th August 2008 to emcee a wonderful and intellectually stimulating event - Seminar on Operation and Maintenance of Electrical Supply System and Power Quality in Putrajaya-Cyberjaya.

There were two groups of experts - the TNB Engineers (General Managers, Senior Managers, Expert engineers, etc) and the expert TNB clients and customers (building owners, consultants, etc). The event was officially launched by Y Bhg Dato' Ir Aishah bt Dato' Hj Abdul Rauf, Vice President for TNB Distribution.

There were altogether seven paper presentations - so it was like an Engineering crash course!!:) to me...yupp, a simple TESL graduate pursuing PhD in organizational communication and 'powerless' language! Pretty shocking? Guess, I returned to my solace with some kind of "not so much of power trip" but a "mighty blink power dip".

So, what did i learn? That 1) there's this second route or back-up power supply to ensure smooth flow of electricity to clients and customers..you know...banks, industries, can't possibly bear with the consequences of power dips or trips...! 2) there's this device called "standby gen-set" which we resort to during power failure to mitigate the repercussions. ***of course there were many other innovative ideas..but let's stick to something close to layman applications:)

I see starking similarity between the standby 'gen-set' and mankind. Despite the fascinating technological breakthrough, some common problems do arise. In other words, although the gen-set is here to help us, it will not function accordingly if we neglect it. Negligence can be due to 3 reasons: 1) fail to set (battery, air-lock, engine jam) 2) fail to carry load (engine, generator, electrical items) 3) fail to sustain load (ring a bell???)

Likewise, man can be achievers if we don't take things for granted. If we only learn from the gen-set lesson scenario, we should be 1) ready to accept challenges 2) ready to perform and 3) consistent in our effort and attempts in all undertakings. It's always good to have Plan B, jez make sure than Plan B is viable, and that it works.

At the end of the day, I'm all the more convinced that Engineering has always fascinated me..too bad...I'm not cut for it...guess I'm d ladylike and motherly type of woman...so i've decided to enjoy the other corner of life...i shall always admire how engineers have engineered the engineering miracles and majesty. Don't ask if my children will be engineers, coz that's a very different story...

Is it about Winning?

It's good to introduce children to sports. Besides ensuring their health and fitness, sports nurtures team spirit, goodwill and competition. Having said that, does it matter if we win or lose?

My son, Emir, participated in the Smart Reader's sports day today and I saw him bonding with lots of friends. I notice two wonders: 1) they identified themselves as Blue, Yellow and Green teams, 2) they enjoyed winning, but didn't blame each other for losing. Hmmmm...something to ponder about how adults may behave, instead???

And...here's what Emir has to say about winning: "I'm the champion....." and "I've got a trophy...". This is another special thing about sports. You win a medal or a trophy everytime. Instead of hampers or goodies, we can arrange our medals and trophies in the glass cabinet and be reminded of our triumphant moments...yuppppp:) we're winners forever.

Now, a little coverage about Nadia. Yesterday, her school participated in a national choir competition at Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur. The boys and girls were so excited, mainly because they were going to KL and that they were selected to represent the school. Congratulations...to all of you. My eldest daughter, Nadia, was the choir conductor. Later, I learned that they only got consolation prize. When I told them to pose under the scorching hot sun after the competition, they were smiling with pride and victory. Apparently, winning is not all about getting first or second place. It's the invaluable experience, team spirit and sweet challenge that give them the thrill and excitement. The kids have won, indeed. Language and Influence - Let's Make a Difference

I'm currently working on my academic article discussing "influence". Definitely, it will not discuss power or authority, but the article will bring forth the hidden powers of language as we use it everyday in our communication with people around us.

Have you heard of influence tactics and influence strategies? Now, how much of this knowledge have you utilized in your life as a student, employee, or participant in any kind of discussion, competitions, challenge, etc?

In bringing the topic of "influence" closer to English as a Second Language (ESL), I have decided to delineate the effects of powerful and powerless language. I shall link this interest to "politeness theory".

To illustrate powerless language which indirectly carries the effects of "influence", we can look at a common habit to use hedges like "I wonder if you could...) and "Could I maybe ask you ..." in our daily conversation and interaction.

Another example is our tendency to use words or phrases which minimize imposition like "I need just a little bit of your time" in making requests or asking for some consideration.

Within the context of "influence", powerless language manifests politeness tactic which represents rituals of approach, social distance, and respect. In layman's term, you may sound humble and down-to-earth, yet you bring more attention to yourself. Hence, you will have more opportunity to influence the hearer of your assertion and reasoning.

Interesting? Guess I should get to completing my paper or it will be overdue anytime. In the meantime, why don't you reflect oon your own experience in a conversation dyad, group discussion, meeting, etc., and share with this blogging community your personal encounter with "influence".

Think - what have you done or said that make others believe in what you said, follow what you do, and shift their stance ? How did you do it? What did you do? What did you say? Or, you may have an idol - a charismatic leader, an orator, an exemplary personality in speech and oratory. Look back and see how these individuals make an impact via their speech and eloquence.

By the way, don't worry about linking it to any of the speech or communication theories...afterall, you're not writing an academic paper. Share, and you'll make a difference:)

Man and Technology

Living in the era of technological success and superiority, this title is apt and worth some deliberation.

To kick-start, technology is man's brainchild. Man creates this intelligence to provide convenience as well as efficiency at work and everyday life. As a result, productivity increases, customers and consumers can also smile with contentment. Machines and devices have made difficult and arduous tasks become simple and manageable. This way, life is less stressful and we can have ample time to spend with family and friends.

Technology supersedes many of man's abilities, skills and talent. For example, robotic technology has contributed to medical breakthroughs requiring precision, as well as mass production of goods to meet the market demand. Computer technology has dwindled the size of mother earth to a global village via communication across countries and continents. Definitely, best of all is computer animation which has enhanced the quality of entertainment nowadays and unshackled the paradigms of producers and movie makers.

This blogosphere – http://speakup-avenue.blogspot.com. is a living example of another benefit of technology to education for mankind. The present generation of learners are fortunate to enjoy state-of-the-art digital library at minimum cost, with 24-hour connection to almost anybody with access to the internet. Without multiple net services and facilities, education will be limited within the four brick walls of the classrooms.

What else can man possibly ask for, given all these luxurious technological inventions and innovations?

Perhaps...a little bit more consideration, concern and discretion in applying and using technology in our lives. We get exasperated listening to news of abuse and misconduct, as well as lack sensitivity, with regard to man and technology.

Man can be proud of science, but he should resist from exploiting this knowledge and expertise to produce more lethal weapons and causing any scale of destruction. Similarly, we take pride in gadgets and devices that ensure security and surveillance, but individual privacy must be respected in every way.

This list of considerations, deliberations, and points to ponder, with regard to man and technology, is never exhaustive.You may want to add your own observation and opinion on this topic.

"Debate" vs "Argue"

With aspiring undergraduates waiting to test their English speaking skills in an English as a Second Language (ESL) climate, what can be enacted and created to assist them in grooming themselves for career demands? What can indeed be the platform to groom undergraduates to use English in a way closest to real-life context, meeting the challenge of interview quality, as well as employability? On this note, please be rest-assured that almost everybody in the country can speak English, by now, and to be a cutting-edge graduate, you should be able to communicate with confidence, persuasion, and impressive language.

Recently, the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM) reported that “Proficiency in the English language is the second most important characteristic sought after by potential employers,” (the Star online, May 13, 2008) in a research which was conducted by UPM’s Alumni Centre involving more than 4000 recently graduated students. In fact, English competency forms an integral element in the success of the country’s National Higher Education Action Plan. So, mastering English is fundamental, and mastery entails the ability to use English in group discussions, group decision making, academic presentations, competetions, and ultimately - debate.

Yuppp:) We argue much with friends and foes, we quarrel and win the arguments with our siblings, we put together our so-called 'communicative competence' and emotional artilleries to win these challenges embedded with sarcasm, ad-hominems, and god knows what...Come to think of this oftentimes-gratifying experience, how much evidence and facts do we have to summon to win the 'battle of wits-and-whatsoever'? At the end of the day, you may discover that to argue is in fact to merely share ignorance... period!

Debate, on the other hand, is entirely different from a mere argument. To debate is to share your intelligence, deliberating on matters and issues at hand, supporting claims with facts, details and evidence beyond reasonable doubt. The fact that you'll be designated to opposing camps can be a blessing in disguise. Being well-read, you shall anticipate the opponents' points and prepare your rebuttals to bring down their claims. And what about you? Muster enough courage, collate all facts and figures pertinent to the motion and your stance, and convince the speaker that your proposal is superior. Hmmm...because it's a battle of intelligence, where brainpower and intellect collide, debates offer a much professional and ethical speaking avenue to evaluate matters.

Can everybody argue? Perhaps. Can any Tom, Dick, and Harry or Salleh, Ah Meng, and Kumari, debate? Yuppp:) Why not? Try it, for the sake of future employability, and pure exchange of insights and observation, and you shall feel the difference. Debate, and "make a difference."

So... if you are currently a debater, have debated, will be debating, etc., please drop us one line or two to share your thoughts and experience. Inspire others to be like you, doing what you do best, enjoy most - debates.

So, did you have a good dream last night, or was it a nightmare? Ohhhh...why bother talk about it when it's over, right? Wrong! Dreams appear in our lives, of course in our sleep, with its very own significance.

I always dream of my late mom and dad. Of course, I miss them so much and sometimes, I create triggers to invite such dreams. This way, my sleep becomes more meaningful, yeah. Now, don't tell me that I sleep because I need to, so I can recover from fatigue and whatsoever....I sleep because I find it so rejuvenating, and wholesome, and rewarding...and that it is also an ideal form of relaxation - to be free from all worries, responsibilities, drudgeries, anf the list can go on.

ok..I'm derailed. We're not talking about sleeping here, but dreams.

Now, just like the wonderful Mariposa fairyland we used to flutter and reside when we (gurlz) were children, dreams occupy some kind of platform in our head? brain? mind? that it's become so attached to our lives. Since the scientists can't concur on the whereabouts or whatabouts, I may as well take the liberty to say that dreams exist to accompany us in this long journey called life.

As a friend or foe, dreams sometimes make explicit our instincts and intuitions. They also become our punching-bag, launching pad, or trampolin. Have you ever had a deja vu? where you meet someone in your dream and later meet the same person in real life? Now, who needs another psychic who works hard to interpret our dreams, when the psychic is already alive and kicking in your head?

To quote Wikipedia, "There is no universally agreed biological definition of dreaming. General observation shows that dreams are strongly associated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, during which an electroencephalogram shows brain activity to be most like wakefulness. Participant-nonremembered dreams during non-REM sleep are normally more mundane in comparison.[1] During a typical lifespan, a human spends a total of about six years dreaming[2] (which is about 2 hours each night[3]). It is unknown where in the brain dreams originate, if there is a single origin for dreams or if multiple portions of the brain are involved, or what the purpose of dreaming is for the body or mind."

Call it dream prophesy, dream nation, dream analysis - they are all the same thing. They are evidence of how we are so attached to this magical "company" that is sometimes our muse, conscience, and guardian angel. There are already so many songs devoted to the beauty of dreams. (Guess I may invite Natasha and Qila to help me here - check out:) their response soon. People my age...remember - EVERLY BROTHERS - ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM (1958) which is my true favourite; CULTURE CLUB - THE DREAM; and of course Mariah Carey's dream numbers...

Welcoming the New Semester:)

Soon, the new semester will open and I certainly hope to meet enthusiastic undergraduates who are determined to succeed academically as well as socially, emotionally and spiritually. Theory and experience has taught us a great deal about interpersonal and intrapersonal strength in coping with challenges in the university. Let's pray that you take heed to this and muster more courage in your struggle for excellence in tertiary education.

Easier said than done? But things always have to start with something, somewhere, so let it begin with my kind reminder cum advice.

I guess I'll be teaching public speaking this time around, but there's no confirmation yet. If so, I'd be more than excited. Really, I just can't wait to groom more public speakers, scout talents for UNITEN EDSoc.'s debate team, and witness a whole class of future leaders speaking up their minds on issues and matters of importance and grievance, planning for their immediate future as well as the nation, deliberating ideas, and debunking invalid arguments. Let's just say that I anticipate a class of active and enthusiastic learners wanting to polish their public speaking skills, and not to forget, budding talents who are grasping with theory and interested in further practice on the public speaking challenge.

If you are a writer, not yet a speaker, you are also most welcomed to join the circle. I believe that speaking and writing are so beautifully connected. The only difference lies in how much guts you need to speak your mind. Seriously! But if you don't care about guts, face, and pride, and your only concern is passing the course with flying colours - then public speaking course will turn the writer in you into a fantabuluos public speaker. Just remember to talk a lot outside class, guess that's a handy kit:)

The Ronald Mac Donald's Sports Challenge

Let me share with all my readers my daughter's fun video at Mac Donald's Alamanda Putrajaya...fun basketball trick..he..he..

It started like this. Ronald came over to Alamanda and entertained the children. They had great fun, as usual. I took my children there to join the events. First, they had a colouring contest. Nadia did a good job and won 3rd place. She received a goodie bag, a cap and a trophy. It's our first time joining Ronald's party. Here's a photo of Nadia and Ronald.

I have heard about Ronald's cheerful personality and talent to attract the crowd...thumbs up to Ronald Mac Donald coz that afternoon, the kids were all so entertained and had lots of fun and laughter. He was promoting healthy lifestyle through sports - so they had simple aerobics, sports quiz, and most importantly, sports-based games. Farah volunteered to play basketball and she had no idea what Ronald actually had in mind. Farah had to hold and contain SIX basketballs...and she did a good job...Luv u darling. That's definitely a tough job. Most importantly, that was a tremendously exemplary sporting spirit from a kid... Thank you Ronald Mac Donald for a wonderful family weekend.Hmmmmmm...and here's Farah's video...he..he..he...

Happy Teachers' Day

May and June are remarkably significant months for most of us. In May, we celebrate Mothers' Day as well as Teachers' Day. And of course, June brings more joy in the family with Fathers' Day celebration.

Like Mothers' Day, Teachers' Day is special in every way. Teachers complete our pursuit of education. Some of us start learning at home, definitely, with moms and dads reading us bedtime stories, playing alphabet games and spending time in the evenings watching fun and learning videos like Barney, Sesame Street and Teletubbies. Nowadays, children switch on to Astro Channels like Playhouse Disney, Nickalodean and Discovery Channel. But we still depend on schools to equip us with the necessary knowledge and skills embedded within the standard education system.

Teachers at tertiary institutions are referred to as lecturers. Nevertheless, they play the same role, to nurture the future generation for a brilliant and successful future. Perhaps their role becomes more challenging as well as instrumental to our lives because they assist their students to compete in the employability challenge. With some exposure to innovation, creativity, and competitive nature, their students become more resilient as well as competitive to decide on a bright future.

As for me, my mom is my first teacher. Since I didn't go to preschool, my mom was the 'teacher' at home equipping me with all the knowledge and skills necessary to survive in Primary One. She did an excellent job because I was placed in the best class at Methodist Girls' Primary School (2), and later got 2nd place in the final year exam. She had always wanted to be a teacher herself. Since she didn't have the opportunity to realize her dreams, I was determined to make it a reality for her. Now, I am a teacher/ lecturer at Universiti Tenaga Nasional. I know my mom will be the happiest person on earth to see me finally teaching, nurturing and shaping the nation's pride. My mom has passed away, but you can see that her dreams lives in me.

I went to a Science college, so it's only natural that most of my friends are now successful doctors, engineers, architects, managers, and entrepeneurs. I have chosen the teaching profession for some personal reasons close to my heart. And I'm so glad and thankful that I am a teacher. Life is always rejuvenating and exciting as a teacher; it's never boring. Every day is like a new day, and I can also learn a lot from my students. The teaching career may not be a lucrative choice, but it is an extraordinary world that I cherish till eternity.

Like me, many teachers feel the love and passion for this teaching career. Teachers' day may come once in a year. Yet, if we live for it's pride, aspiration, and honourable vision, teaching will keep us lively every second...hey..this is just what we need in this modern world. Teaching always makes me feel young at heart, and keeps me youthful as well:) ehemmmm....

A Tribute to Mom

Today, we celebrate mother's day. This is a very special event in every mom's life.

Early this week, my son came back from pre-school with a tissue-carnation. He did it with his teacher's help...hmm, I was so touched. I always like it when schools cultivate good values like this - to be thoughtful and loving to mom (and family). Thank you darling..oh...you are so wonderful...

Three days back, Farah and Emir sang a song for me entitled " Mummy...You are So Wonderful" and I recorded it. Now, it has become my precious ringtone...Farah's teacher wrote the lyrics for her school choir competition...isn't this great:)

Today is mother's day, and Nadia had wanted to make me scrambled egg for breakfast...but she will have to wait..hmmm...coz we had a special mother's day breakfast at Mac Donald's Taman Equine. Excellent deal... I got a free breakfast set with every order..try to imagine this...they actually doubled my order of Sausage Mc Muffin with Egg, and Big Breakfast...hmmm...thankx family restaurant.

And the greatest gift of all to all moms is the wonderful thought from each loving member in the family. I am so lucky and thankful to have a 'big' happy family. We may not have riches, but we are so rich in love, care and presents..he..he...here's a photo of us in front of Memory Lane Taman Equine.

The kids got me something...hmm...now, I am proud to have two extra hearts and another cuddly bear. My first two bears were given by my darling husband...guess, bears have become the 'lovey-dovey-cuddly-snuggly' mascot for lovers, kids and families...aha...:)

To all mothers, I wish you all a very happy mother's day. Cherish this moment of happiness. Although love comes every other moment in our lives, a one-day celebration like this is indeed the highlight to our family's tribute to us.

I have lost my mom, but she's always in my mind, forever my inspiration and the pillar to my determination and success. I pray may Allah blesses her soul, and I know she's happy that because of her, I am what I am today, blessed with a good career, three wonderful children and a very loving husband. (Thanks Prof. Kobkua for this quote in your sms. You are a very special mom in every way to me...)

Feel Like Giving Up???

Isn't this a common 'escapism' to our multi-coated life? Yah! I shall call it an 'escapism' because it actually means we take a flight, not fight our way to champion our pursuit and struggle.

Frankly, I nearly felt like giving up yesterday. All this while, I have put so much effort into my work, and I was so serious in scrutizing the process and product. But I had a bombshell yesterday evening when #### said he didn't see me doing anything!!!?

ok..I'm getting personal here, instead of being more professional. This just had to happen to me, so I had to face it like an adult. It may happen to you one day, but let's pray that it doesn't yaaa...

So, I really felt like giving up. But WHY should I? Afterall, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder;) So? Why bother? If I think I have done my work according to the specifications, and my work has been approved by a respectable committee of scholars, do I have to be affected by #### passing judgement like this?

Thoughts to ponder:

At times like this, let's tell ourselves that maaaaay beeeee - we don't need this EXTERNAL VALIDATION. We are what we believe we are, and we deserve some respect, even a tiny bit. #### doesn't have to undemine me for reasons that are made up out of sheer whatever:)

Today I'm back on my toes, and I'm so glad I'm ok...huh..even someone as adult as I am can be affected, but we all need to be a tough cookie sometimes.

Big Cleaning Day

The country has proudly practised a system and discipline known as Five S's or 5S - Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain. It could have started with the manufacturing and industrial plants first because they benefit most from tiptop organization and systematic planning and implementation.

This quality program known as '5S' has been successfully adapted for use in institutions of higher learning, including my university - the Universiti Tenaga Nasional. Recently, the '5S'auditors came down and visited the campus to evaluate our performance in keeping up with the challenge. Hmmm, I shall try to update this article when the results is released...

So we went '5S' crazy for a long while. The university staff attended pre-'5S' workshops and campaigns, and then, there were filing systems to follow, arrangement and labelling to be done, and what I dreaded most was discarding of items - which may sound impossible for individuals like me. Argggh! the office is my treasure chest!!! complete with precious belongings and items of sentimental value:)

Our first nightmare came around in sorting our stacks of items. But it was not as tough as it may sound. As much as '5S' may be stringent in ensuring order, it also brings about a very impressive 'speck n clean' culture. Besides, it nurtures a very good habit of keeping our workplace organized and in perfect order. Everything has its place, and should be returned to its assigned location after use. This way, we can find completely any reference item in a jiffy, and eliminate lame excuses like - lost it! the elves must have taken it! somebody must have borrowed it. Ring a bell? We were positive in embracing this new 'big clean concept' and we all did it wonderfully.

I guess the best part for '5S' is the last step which is to sustain the good practice and habits. We certainly don't have to wait for another program, campaign or evaluation visit to happen to remind us about our responsibility to keep our place clean and systematic. We don't need to declare another Friday as our 'big cleaning day'.

For its superior qualities, let's take '5S' program and concept as our culture - a complete package of guidance, value, and quality control. Like the industries, the universities are welcoming the '5S' program. The nation should read up more about it, and join the pursuit of total cleaning initiative. Imagine - reduced rubbish, zero litterbugs, cleaner roads, well-maintained road signs, etc.

The '5s' program does not end at the workplace - main office, lecture halls, and individual work space. It also reminds us of our dutiful chores at home, systematic student life, and intrapersonal and interpersonal values like time management, discipline, effective procedures, etc.

Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain.

Sports has become a recreational activity, hobby and a contemporary lifestyle to us. With stress level rising every second, and challenges at every nook and corner of our life, the only saviour seems to be "good health".

An affordable way to stay healthy is by engaging ourselves in at least one type of sport we can enjoy. Furthermore, the superiority of sports to human soul and body can go beyond description - think about acquaintances and new friends, fresh air, improved blood circulation, etc. In short, sports as a term exists to benefit mankind, ultimately.

Nowadays, besides the traditional types of sport, we can also choose any of the extreme sports as a hobby or a way to start our profession. A sport like rock climbing, river rafting, bungee jumping and skateboarding may involve certain danger involving extreme situations. But the thrills and obstacles bring about the fun in every extreme sports fan.

Part-time Jobs for Undergraduates

Some people work for money while others work for experience. Some wish to beef up their resume and add credentials in their dossier; thus, stand a better chance for employability. Nevertheless, as an undergraduate, perhaps the priority has to be more of gaining experience as well as extending social and future business network. This is because part-time jobs can also be essential in grooming entrepreneurship skills among undegraduates.

When I was an undergraduate, I spent some of my long semester breaks doing odd jobs like working as a waitress in a restaurant where I also picked up some cooking as well as communication skills, and as a lab assistant in a glove factory where I put my chemistry knowledge to some use. I also worked in a biscuit factory until I got fed up of eating free biscuits - all those delicous love rolls and crackers. Furthermore, I gave tuition classes to primary school children, and was a personal tutor to two well-off children in KL for some time.

Many of my friends were doing part-time jobs while studying mostly because the scholarship or study loan was rather inadequate. Nevertheless, there were friends who could afford almost anything, but still engaged a part-time job for their own reasons. Apart from the extra money, I did all the jobs because I wanted to know what working life is like. One good lesson I learnt from my part-time jobs back then was this: studying is definitely tough and challenging - but working and earning some money on your own without that scroll is nothing easy!!! So, I kinda cherished my undergraduate years ultimately.

I believe that undergraduates nowadays take up part-time jobs because of innumerable reasons. As long as they have a good intention, it should be a worthy experience. It can make them more matured in dealing with everyday challenges and confronting obstacles. Nevertheless, they must prioritize on their education and never get carried away with the monthly income. University education is still very necessary, and undergraduates need the scroll in order to enjoy a more promising future.

I believe many of you have done part-time jobs before. Please share with us your experience and fond /miserable memories. For those who plan to have a part-time job during the long break, what kind of jobs are you looking for and why?

TO EDSoc. members, and 15 brilliant students who were involved in my Phd research, you can definitely beat the challenge of employability. You'll get that job you want, soon.

Good vs Bad Habits

One of my students presented a speech on "habit" yesterday and I promised the class that i shall post one short article on the topic in this blog. I guess this topic is close to us, particularly in analysing our everyday attitude, behaviour and personality. Whether we realize it or not, some of our habits potray and also reveal our true selves significantly.

In general, we can think of habits from two perspectives: good and constructive habit, as well as bad and destructive habits. But, how do you draw a line between these two domains? If it is based on principles of life, moral values and common understanding, anything that contributes to the betterment of mankind can be considered as good habit. On the contary, actions that can bring harm, injustice or casualty will be labelled negative. Then, what happens to so-called human rights? Human prerogatives? Freedom of expression of your thoughts, beliefs, and behaviour? Freedom of choice?

Well, in uptight situations like this, we need to remember that we live in a community replete with standard practices and accepted values. Thus, in order not to offend the people around us, as much as we don't want to suppress our freedom to do what we like, we can study the norm of our society. It is polite to observe some ethical considerations as well as unwritten rules.

For example, many of our friends are smokers. We all know that it's a harmful habit, which can be even more hazardous to the people around called secondary smokers. Too bad - some are heavy and chain smokers that they can't quit despite health campaigns and incessant cough. For this group of people, we generally request that they occupy the non-smoking corners at the restaurants, refrain from smoking in gazetted non-smoking areas, and stay away from pregnant ladies and children. In other words, make it a personal agenda.

Nevertheless, even personal habits like biting fingernails under stress, putting one hand in the pocket during public speaking, and taking snacks before sleep should be avoided due to certain conventions and etiquette namely grooming, public speaking and health. Good habits like reading even at bus-stops and in the commuter, or saying thank you, should be nurtured and encouraged.

Interesting? Mind-boggling? Confusing?

Well, think back and evaluate yourself. What are some of the bad habits that you should abandon? Similarly, what are some good habits you shall keep for the rest of our life, promote to friends, and something you plan to adopt in the near future?

Involvement in Campus Activities

Recently, I attended two great events organized by the university students: A Malay theatre: "Selendang Milik Laila"and "Indian Cultural Nite 2008". Frankly, I think the undergraduates have done a fantastic job. It's definitely not an easy task: putting the task force together; coordinating specific duties that require maturity, knowledge and external contact; and ensuring quality product to meet the expectation and satisfaction of the audience.

First, the theatre production - "Selendang Milik Laila". Putting up a live performance requires absolute planning and accurate execution of strategies. Can we imagine a slight blunder backstage? onstage? The actors will get distracted, mood will diminish, and the audience will probably lose their concentration. But the students' production was next to perfect. The actors and actresses played their roles very well. My children like Tok Ketua, and the audience like him too. Tok Chik was another interesting character, typical kampong folk, and a cheeky old man.

The protagonist looked cool on his 60's bike (good prop). Some of the audience and I was just a bit worried about the kampung house or hut..luckily the zink did not slip. Overall, promotion was done early enough (with the banners) which attracted a multi-ethnic crowd. I was there - and it was full house! Isn't that a good indication of success, already?:)Bravo. The technical crew (Rahim & friends) did a fabulous job in supporting the production.A salute to the director and script writer. Finally,I must thank Hadi for his kind invitation. I took my girls with me, and I believe they learned a great deal from the theatre. Here's their photo against the banner. Perhaps, they should turn it into a novel and the sales will go to ASTENA proportionately. Long Live ASTENA.

Next, Pushpa invited me to a UNICS cultural night last weekend. When I told my children about it, they were so excited and couldn't wait for the event. We had all the reasons to be there: 1. Indian cultural dance is our family favourite 2. they promised a non-stop showcase of varieties of Indian dance 3. Navin was the emcee 4. hey, it's free...come on..where can you get anything valuable yet free, these days?

My girls wore their Indian costume, bought in Little India in Penang. It was fun and enjoyable, mesmerizing and captivating. The event was very well organized, guys with walkie-talkie were almost everywhere, even on stage, and there was no hiccups at all. The emcees tried dancing and singing, and that was also pretty entertaining. The most impressive thing about the event is that it was full-house, and the crowd was multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, with students, lecturers, and lots of parents. I was so glad when one of the parents actually won the lucky draw. Of course, the fact that I saw many of my own students and ex-students on stage (Rao's breakdance was fabulous) and behind the succesful production is the next best thing. Thumbs up everybody.

Actually, there are many more events like this on campus and this provides a sturdy platform for our undergraduates to enhance their soft skills and also talent. We don't learn about leadership and team work only in class or through organizing academic and social projects, but also from cultural events like this.

Nevertheless, some may be skeptical and wonder - aren't the undergraduates supposed to concentrate on their studies - revisions, assignments, and projects? Why do they choose to be actively involved in campus activities?? Well, only those who have experienced organizing and participating in campus activities can provide us with the authentic answer.

Finally, lat's have a more balanced life everybody - join the campus activities and make a difference. Varsity days become more colourful with these activities:)

My First Speech

Do you remember your first speech? Or...Did you just deliver a speech? Better still, will you be presenting your speech soon?

Three interesting questions, not so much rhetorical, but enough to invite response among this blogging community hopefully.

Beginners usually prepare well-crafted speeches, sometimes too perfect that they get trapped in the web of intricate language or complicated concepts and explanation. Instead of developing a suitable speech which explains the topic in simple yet clear language, beginners sometimes underestimate their own capability and end up copying or borrowing somebody else's speech.

A ready-made speech may look very good on paper; nevertheless, it may not match the speaker's style, personality, or worse, ability. This will result in a blunder.

I hope it's comforting to say here that you should try to craft your very own speech. It may sound demanding, but if it succeeds, you shall be proud of your masterpiece. A speech can look very simple for a start. Something like an extended outline, embellished with finishing touches like establishing common ground - use of personal pronouns to bring the topic closer to the audience, use of rhetorical questions to make the audience think along the line of arguments presented in the speech, and personalized information.

Other than that, the speech has to be 'designed' with three aspects in mind: timeliness, proximity and seriousness. Think about this - you want the audience to listen to you for 10 minutes. Wouldn't it do them justice by telling them what they want and need to know more, rather than rambling about matters so detached? Bring the discussion closer to the audience, and work on it!

Hmm...easier said than done...? No. Try it and you will see the difference. Believe in your own intelligence, ability and talent. If you have learned about it in class, it's time to find the strength in you to 'design' your own speech making sure that it suits your oral style and oratory skills.

I'm sure many of you have done just that - having designed your own speech, did it take off as you had expected it to be? In reality, the speech shall be your launching pad. Definitely, you need to have some rounds of rehearsals or practices, and some degree of exposure and experience will take you a step further.

Perhaps you could share with us on this blog what it was like - you know, presenting your first speech? Sooner or later, we shall all go through the same challenge, if not in Public Speaking class...in societies, clubs or get-togethers...think positive. It's an avenue to speak up;)

Your Hobby is your Delite:)

Hmm..at a glance, this may look like a title for my girl's Primary Five composition. Yet, never underestimate the power it can bring to your total wellbeing.

Haven't we heard of this catchphrase - laughter is the best medicine? True, but what if we don't laugh much? Afterall, not everybody laughs when he's tickled. I have been taught to laugh like this ..hah...hah...hah... anything more than this is unnecessary and may affect your memory... some ladies only titter, smile, or grin, to express their joy and laughter. If laughter is not the medicine for all - what can be the substitute?

Try this - HAPPINESS. When we are happy, we smile and share the joy with others around us. This way, we can also make other people happy. Isn't this great?

One way to find happiness is to do what you enjoy - find a hobby. By having a pastime, you will not afford any negligible moment in your life. Once you're done with your tonnes of work, assignments, and duties, get hooked to your favourite activity and the world shall shine once again.

If you're one of those who have been buried in the academic books and research reports, never took time off for leisure, this is the time to think of one and create one. Identify an activity that can take your mind away from the hectic workload - if possible, something of a different nature altogether. If your worklife is dull, find something vibrant and colourful. If life is rather sedentary, try out something active involving more aerobics and energy.

These days, other than reading my books, I relate to the internet pages and resources. This definitely enriches my knowledge and broadens my perspective about current issues. Sitting in the office all day is never a problem because I have intermittent classes as well as visits to the library. But jogging at the university mini stadium or swimming with my children enlightens the day. At weekends, window shopping really lifts my spirit. Given a bit more flexibility to the work schedule, I enjoy going places with the family.

Hmmm...people can do all sorts of things just to have more fun and activity in life. At times when the exam is indeed only two weeks away, hobbies can take away some stress for a while. If your pastime does not involve any possible danger, investment of riches and property, or damaging implications to emotions and personality - why worry? Enjoy your hobby coz it can be your best buddy.

So, what's your hobby? If you don't mind sharing it with this blogging community, perhaps someone may take it up the next moment and you shall get new company...

The ESL Classroom is an Empire of Great Minds!.

I was at the First International Language Conference (ILC) organized by the IIUM early this weak - 3rd March to 5th March 2008. Participants and presenters were from 26 different countries around the world. This is a great meeting of great minds - sharing plans, projects, noble intentions, and strategies to upgrade the quality of teaching of three main languages: English, Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic. My paper presentation is entitled : Let Learners Learn from Experience: Ethical Decision Making in the ESL Classroom.

As an academician, I always try to improve my knowledge on ELT as well as teaching methodology to promise more effectiveness in the ESL classroom. This is definitely not an easy task. It entails a lot of reading, some kind of experimenting, and rigorous research initiatives. At conferences like the ILC, I also learn about other methodologies and pedagogical approaches that educational practiotioners can use in the classroom. Some of these ideas evolve, and some are new hybids - technology + ESL methodology, etc.

Most importantly, I also make new friends who are academic researchers like me - glad to know Dr Fawzia from Oman, Brenda-Davies the dynamic Irish duo from Brunei, Dr Farouk from Universiti Kelantan Malaysia, and Monica from Hong Kong. Well, when I present my research paper in Hong Kong, I'll definitely meet Monica again...and we'll find time to see places there, hopefully. I also met my favourite teacher back in MRSM Jasin, who is now Dr Umi...hmm..isn't this great, and isn't it a small world?

Now, coming back to my point of writing this post; I believe that great minds should meet at a platform where there is a sharing of ideas, exchange of opinions, a deliberation of new discoveries. Knowledge is abundant that one person cannot possibly handle it. Knowledge is so majestic that we shouldn't keep it to ourselves. Knowledge is the thrust to all other accomplishments that it should be recorded properly.

The mind works and the mind connects.The mind speaks and the mind hears. The mind is indeed so powerful. Winston Churchill once said, "The empires of the future are the the empires of the mind". But it takes the man and woman possessing the minds to elevate the dormant states of minds to be proactive and thus contribute to an empire.

Let's bring this deliberation closer to the context of an ESL classroom.In the Academic Writing class, students choose a research topic, engage in extensive reading to explore the topic, and write a research paper for submission (15%). For this activity to benefit the students, the process should enrich their knowledge, make them think and connect the reading material to their everyday lives and observation; thus, making them more knowledgeable and matured at the end of the day.

What about the Public Speaking class? The student selects a topic out of interest or curiosity. Then, he reads further on the topic and later presents his research to his classmates (20%). On the presentation day, some minds may remain idle. But, the minds that are most alert, busy processing the input and making sense of the new and interesting facts and ideas, shall leave the class with rich extended body of knowledge.

Knowledge exists everywhere - even in the classroom. Sometimes, students stand in front of the class and present their insights and ideas - hey, that triggers a new idea, a different perspective. Stduents read and write their research paper, write articles and responses in the blogs and newspaper - these are all active minds contributing to "the great empire of the minds".

Research and expansion of knowledge is not an activity that is exclusive to academicians, researchers, and writers alone. When we meet in the classroom, the students should be made to understand that they are themselves researchers, learners, and writers, from their own special domain. They are intellectuals who are entitled to their own opinions and stance; also the freedom to express their thoughts and observations in a non-threatening avenue.

Hence, the classroom is itself a great platform for knowledge-sharing. Yes, the classroom is "The International Learning Conference" where great minds agree to disagree, share insights and discoveries, unravel truths in their everyday experience and encounter, record as well as present their learning and research experience.

Isn't the classroom full of great minds? Doesn't the classroom produce charismatic speakers and dynamic leaders? Isn't the classroom a smaller version of the society outside? Well, we cannot deny that whatever we do in the classroom will shape our habits and behaviour, perspective and attitude, in the real world to a certain extent.

What about you? Do you feel like a budding researcher, writer and presenter, already? "A stitch in time saves nine", so work on it, and you'll graduate from this semester with more fulfilment and self-discovery, hopefully.

Children and adults, Malaysians from all walks of lives, sing this national anthem with passion, spirit, and HOPE. Every second passes on with a prayer for more prosperity and unity in the country. The world knows Malaysia as a Boleh-land. We make lots of guiness book entries, and we take pride in our local talents and abilities. We also develop in multiple dimensions to be at par with the rest of world - sometimes in leaps and bounds, sometimes crawling.

As a land blessed with rich natural resouces and well-being of its human capital, Malaysia has the right recipe for success in this era of globalization where competition is intense. Perhaps, what it requires is a bit of aspiration and enthusiasm in the people for a better future. In other words, Malaysians should reflect on their dreams, ambitions and visions to improve their own living, setting a higher standard of achievement in every aspect of life. This includes comprehensive planning in ensuring quality education, competitive economy which provides opportunities for business ventures and employment, as well as assurance of better living standards.

The country is now at its crossroads. At this moment, everywhere you go, you will notice political posters, banners and fliers at every corner and strategic place. The talk in town is Malaysia's 12th general election. As a country that believes in democracy, Malaysians are given the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights through voting - provided that you are enlisted as a registered voter:)

Some issues and concerns that I have gathered from the public are: mismanagement of public funds, corruption, public transportation, inflation, increase in crime rate, influx of foreign labour, etc. These problems have posed serious implications to the nation, and requires immediate solution.

Ladies and gentlemen, concerned citizens of Malaysia...

If you were the Prime Minister of the newly elected government, what would be your priority toward the betterment of our beloved country - Malaysia?

It's a Leap day - 29th February 2008

Today is a special day. If you're born on 29th February, you'll be able to celebrate your birthday once in every four years. And you're called a "leapling" - hmm, isn't that interesting that the world has coigned a special name for you? For others, guess there's no reason for envy, simply because this compensates the three years void of proper birthday celebration.

It's a leap year, and it's a very special year indeed. You may or may not realize the whole legal significance of the leap year phenomenon. Consider this - when will be the exact date for leapling teenagers to : obtain driving license? become registered voters? legally purchase and consume alcohol? watch 18SG/SX- rated movies? It's interesting to note that in Taiwan, a leapling's birthday falls on the 28th February every common year. In different parts of the world, the legal age in a non-leap year can fall either on 28th February or 1st March.

Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia for us to share on this special day :

"There are many instances in children's literature where a person's claim to be only a quarter of their actual age turns out to be based on counting their leap-year birthdays. A similar device is used in the plot of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1879 comic opera The Pirates of Penzance: As a child, Frederic was apprenticed to a band of pirates until the age of 21. Now, having passed his 21st year, he leaves the pirate band and falls in love. However, it turns out that the pirate indenture says that his apprenticeship does not end until his 21st birthday, and since he was born on February 29, that day will not arrive until he is in his eighties, and so he must leave his fiancée and return to the pirates. So, what's special on your calendar today? I should consider myself lucky because I can record very interesting events today - on this special leap day.

1. In my public speaking class, my students did a very good job in their public speaking practice. Tasha, Mun and Zahra showed the class what public speaking is all about. What about Fareez? Yes, he's in class today:) and he gave a very entertaining speech. The crowd likes him so much. Vee, Qila, Ifna and Afiq also did a good job. I should thank Wani for her fantastic idea of crowning all the speakers as Miss Congeniality, Miss Cherry Blossom, Mr Transformee!?! , and lots more.

2. I received an email from Asaihl Conference organizer in Thailand announcing that my abstract has been accepted for conference paper presentation. I shall talk about the "blogosphere". Guess this is the in thing nowadays and a miraculous way to catch up with teen-tech. Let's pray that the university approves my application to present this paper.

3. At five, we had our group decision making recording for my phd research. This time around, my ex-students from last semester's ITCB debated on an ethical dilemma. Pushpa mentioned about the leap day, and leap year, and I guess that kind of reminded me about this special day.

4. We are celebrating "Karnival Kelompok" at UNITEN this weekend. It's a good gathering of dynamic and enthusiastic undergraduates. Projects like this are empowering and educating in every way. I met Azwan, Zul and friends selling burger, and of course, Fareez - again - at the karaoke canopy. He sang "Bernafas Dalam Lumpur". Well, I saw many other students there, particularly some who didn't turn up for my class this morning and looking very healthy and active tonite - gotcha...Meon? Was it you? Ab - break a leg and win the hamper, yah!

5. My beloved husband reminded me about the leap day and that I should seize this opportunity to record everything nice and wonderful on my blog. This will at least trigger my readers to reflect on this special day. Perhaps you would like to share with us what special things happened today in history ;)

Guess that's about all. Happy leap birthday to all leaplings, and see you all tomorrow. It will be March 1st and we shall meet in a new monthly archive.

Competitions

Have you ever compared prices at different shops, shopping malls, and outlets? If you haven't acquired that habit, try scrutinizing the decor, service and ambience in your favourite restaurant, and compare it with one of your friend's choice, or worse, another which does not even exist in your list. Let's admit that as consumers, we enjoy the benefit of competition among service providers and business ventures. Imagine if we are doomed with only one shop around the corner, and one miserable restaurant at another, what will happen to our lives?

The situation above shows how much we appreciate competitive spirit in business. Now, let's bring this matter closer to us as in the academic setting - competitions in getting good grades and ending up in the Dean's list. Wow! For those who have been there, what does it feel to win the challenge? Even within the classroom, we can see students compete for attention, participation, and marks. Is this healthy?

Outside the classroom, there are events and activities for us to make our lives more colourful. There are charity projects, educational programmes, sports events, and there are also - competitions. Without them, life can be monotonous and mundane. There are competitive events like sports tournament, public speaking competitions, innovation and research competitions, debates, etc. What kind of experience do we get from our participation in the respective competitions? How do we feel about it? Does winning and losing matter so much more than the true spirit of competition? Do we have to instill this competitive spirit in our younger generation, or will it soon come around naturally?

As an adult, I have gone through this cycle of learning and experiencing the ups and downs of competitions through and through. Competitions keep you on your toes all the time...they really boost your morale particularly when you win, but teach you to muster enough courage to confront the obstacles when you lose and fall. As a lecturer, I always try to motivate my students to join competitions, and create opportunities for them to channel the competitive nature.

As a parent, I also encourage my children to participate in competitions, no matter what entail. Recently, they joined the events at Taman Warisan Putrajaya in conjunction with the Agro Bazaar. Farah was 2 X champion, for colouring contest, and fruit puzzle competition. Nadia also won third place for fruit puzzle competition. I think the children had a good taste of success gained through patience, determination and zest. Not many children would be willing to sacrifice their weekends at home just to participate in competitions. Thumbs up girls:)

I believe many of you share the same passion for competitions. Without this adrenalin-pumping activity, life will never be another mark in history! As long as we observe the ethics and values, our participation in competitions will be worthy, indeed.

Do we Need Final Exams?

In those days, there were only final exams. Teachers covered the syllabus within the timeframe of a year (equivalent to 10 months) and we sat for the exams to test our understanding + memory. hmmm..at the end of the year. Then, we had concert and prize-giving day at school. I really enjoyed being a child...the only talk about exams was the 100% final exam in October - hey, I was born in October, so this deserves some attention also:)

There were two types of perception among us then. First, studying was like a long distance event in sports. You would have to study consistently to maintain stamina, and grasp the subject matter as they come along. Nevertheless, there were also students who relaxed throughout the beginning of the year, and only studied intensively one or two months before the exam. Still, the results were more or less or even better than the first group of students who diligently studied throughout the year. Well - perhaps it's the strategy being employed - tuition classes, past year exam papers, etc!

Back then we had "Penilaian Darjah Lima" which is equivalent to UPSR now for Primary 6. Same thing prevailed. And what happened in Primary six without standardized exam? That was a year of fun and fortune...but children nowadays have to continue the battle till the last day of Primary six.. the same goes with SPM...in school, teachers had to remind us that Form Four is not a "honeymoon year" - start studying seriously, or you'd be left behind...

For undergraduates, the scenario is so different with regard to the nature of assessment and evaluation in the university setting. The final exam still comes around, but without the predominant 100%. Perhaps it's 40%, 50% or in some courses, 60%. The rest of the portion is distributed to the cumulative assessments. In other words, every effort students make in their attempt to fully grasp and understand the course throughout the semester counts. Now, students who wait till the end of semester to open their books and work on assignments will bear the consequences - some may stumble and fail.

Isn't this good, that we have such a system in place to reward diligence and constant pursuit of success? As a lecturer, I find it rewarding to be able to acknowledge my sudents' continuous effort for success. For more difficult subjects, trying out your understanding of the concepts and applications little by little via the tests can be a steady preparation for the final exam paper at the end of the semester.

But I can be wrong here in several ways. May be, students don't like to be tested every other week or month. Or, may be they are only ready to be tested at the end of the semester when the loop is complete, and when all doubts have been answered. Or - can it be the last-minute syndrome that undoubtedly brings about its own implications?

Nevertheless, let's return to our discussion topic - when we can have effective cumulative assessment in place to check students' continuous understanding as well as improvement, do we still require a final exam that kinda summarizes the whole semester's pursuit? Without it, will students have the tendency to forget or abandon the earlier topics? As much as this is the concern, do remember that the course as a whole is a triangulation of inter-related topics. If topic 1 supports topic 2, and topic 3 consolidates topic 1 and 2, how can students afford to forget the earlier topics - right?

Guess, this is a point to ponder.

Discipline

D - decades of education and training testify, that
I - it remains essential to us all.
S - success and downfall of groups and individuals,
C - creation of breakthroughs,
I - innovative inventions,
P - persistence, courage and determination,
L - lies within one's perception and internalization of discipline.
I - introduction of systems, enforcement of laws,
N - no nonsense, no lame excuses, no procrastination,
E - enhance our maturity and jurisdiction.

Discipline, in its many forms and functions, plays a very significant role in ensuring good results at the end of the day. Starting from school, we have been exposed to discipline as a concept, philosophy and behavioural guide. It's the foundation to successful teamwork, as well as individual endeavours.

I'm sure you can think of specific examples when lack of discipline only leads to problems and damaging consequences. Likewise, self-discipline may have enhanced accomplishment and achievement in our everyday pursuits.

Acrobatic Lion Dance Spectacular

We drove to Mid Valley Megamall yesterday morning to witness a spectacular lion dance performance scheduled at 12. Most Malaysians (particularly my children) look forward to lion dance performance every Chinese New Year. One day, may be we'll join the crowd at the Genting World Lion Dance Championship at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands.

The lion dance commemorates a lagendary lion which frightened away a mythological beast that attacked the people on new year eve in ancient China. Besides,the dance is believed to usher good fortune, as well as ward off evil spirits. I have heard of shop and restaurant owners rewarding a large sum of money in red ang pows to the dancers.

The lion dance is performed in countries like China, Singapore, Malaysia and even the USA. It marks important events like festivals, weddings, or launching of business, etc. Renowned actors like Jet Li and Wong Fei Hong have also starred in lion dance movies - hmmm...Very interesting.

For those who haven't seen a live performance of the lion dance, check out the schedules at Mid Valley and other nearby places. The lions are very cute and adorable. The choreography makes you forget that there are talented boys underneath the lion costume! One thing for sure - the lions are definitely our country's latest team of acrobats, indeed - displaying such elegance and accuracy in every move.

Learning is a Journey

"Learning is a journey" is a conceptual metaphor (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). It is used to show how we perceive the learning activity,i.e. commitment and responsibility. Learning is in fact a very abstract concept. We won't be able to understand our perception and understanding about it if we were to define it superficially. Nevertheless, we can learn to use metaphors, and the grey areas will soon diminish:)

We start to grasp the world of knowledge in our mothers' wombs. At least, that's what science claims and mothers discover. The moment we open our eyes and make sense of things around us, we observe and analyze, follow what adults teach us and abandon nasty habits that result from our natural curiosity and carelessness.

When we grow older and believe that we're matured enough to assume responsibilities, we want to make our own decisions and break away from confining rules and norms. Sometimes, this does not take us anywhere, really, but a taste of independence only proves that forbidden fruit tastes better, and sometimes bitter!

Look around, and we see evidence of success. How we envy those triumphs and victories. We set our mind on a career goal, and we pursue higher education. Along the way, we stumble and fall, and we rise to the challenges in order to realize our expectations:) We are at crossroads, yet we know - there's no turning back. We learn that success is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. So, we set out to prove that we are capable to compete in this race.

We learn new things everyday, we learn through mistakes and constructive comments. We learn from friends and foes, and we learn passionately every moment we think, feel, see, hear and taste. Learning is such a rich experience, and learning is our lifelong pursuit.

Learning is a very noble endeavour, in every way. We can never stop learning. Take me as an example - as I'm teaching my students in class, I'm also learning new things from them, and like them, I also go through the ups and downs, the bittersweet challenge of learning frontiers, as a Phd student. As they all dream for their scrolls, I also pray that I can finally reach my finishing line.

Well - all the words in italics above give rise to the metaphor - learning is a journey. A journey, begins and a journey has a destination. The in-betweens may be bumpy, spinning, foundering, or smooth-sailing. Whatever it entails, complete the loop, reach the dreams and destinations - ALL the BEST! We can all do it!

Protect the Environment

The world we live in today may not be the sight we will still witness in the near future. Nevertheless, accepting the truth of this claim is not enough. It is our responsibility to find a good way to preserve the special characteristics of the planet we live in, and act immediately.

When I was small, my teachers used to make us look across the green field, to the row of trees at the end of the school compound, after stressful moments concentrating on the textbooks. Once or twice a year, school clubs and Brownies (I'm a Pixie) would have a picnic or camping trip by the seaside where we would bathe in clean and clear sea, and gaze at the blue horizon. At university, I joined the Nature Society for camping trips as well as mountain climbing and jungle trekking activities. As we visited marine parks like Mamutik island and Tioman island, and become enchanted by the mesmerizing beauty of underwater life, we also helped to clean the beaches that were sometimes littered and battered by mankind (or weather.)

What about today? There are still as many informative campaigns and talks to encourage and beg for us to save the environment. But, do we all take heed to the alarming environmental calls? The threatening effects of global warming? When the situation is only getting worse, most of us still succumb to old habits. Plactic shopping bags, waste of electricity, fast food cartons and aerosols, - ring a bell?

Let's start with the little things we can do - on our own, within the small family unit, campus and social community - to protect our environment from any further damage and destruction.

It is really not easy..being away from home. But some of us just don't have a choice. We either have to pursue our education in another state, or abroad...or there's just no job in the hometown.
For Malaysians, it's holiday time now. We'll be celebrating Chinese New Year (GONG XI FA CAI to our Chinese friends), schools will be closed for a while, and some universities are having their semester break. In other words, it's time to sit at home and enjoy every minute with our beloved family.

ooops...There are tests after the holidays. Well, what does this entail? Yuppp! Time management so that there's a more balanced planning between fun and studies.

Whatever happens, home is just the place we want to be right now...

Let's Make Reading a Habit

Nowadays, reading opportunities come in abundance. These opportunites are sometimes free of charge - like the free newspapers, free pamphlets, internet materials, leaflets - which we sometimes take for granted. University students can access latest journal articles as well as reports via on-campus database. We even read in the comfort of our bedrooms, home, not to mention nearby libraries as well as spacious book stores or when we're on the move, using communication gadgets.

When I take my children to Pizza Hut, or any family restaurants, one main attraction is the activity sheets laid out on the tables to keep customers occupied while waiting for meals to be served. The puzzles and mazes are simple yet engaging ideas which appeal not only to children but also parents.

Besides, major bookstores like MPH, Borders and Kinokuniya prepare reading corners as well as children's corner to encourage reading for pleasure. Like adults, children also scan through pages, skim for interesting content, not to mention pictures and activites. Other reading-related activities included are story-time and puppet shows which promote children's favourite cartoon characters.

I have only given two examples of reading materials as well as reading opportunities that come in an attractive package. I'm sure we have our own ways and means of encouraging our children, students and younger siblings to read. Some houses have a reading corner, small library, or even a study stacked up with all kinds of books. Some families subscribe educational and leisure magazines be it local or international publications.

Realizing how rich reading opportunity has become, we would expect more than half of our nation to proudly enlist reading as a hobby, or a habit. We would also expect the number of our reading population to increase, compared to the previous decades. Well, is this the scenario? May be, we can start by asking ourselves, first.

Recently, one of my students, Ira, wanted to write an academic paper on reading habits among Malaysians. I supported her interest and I encouraged her to find answers to her own curiosity - references include research papers, reports, newspaper articles, etc. **Ira will be invited to respond to this blog article soon, perhaps with latest statistics.

By now, I think reading facilities and promotions have been satisfactory. Most libraries in Malaysia have organized reading campaigns as well as activities. Most neighbourhoods would have a public library within the vicinity or a bookstore within travelling distance. Most homes have at least cultivated the habit of reading.

What we actually read becomes secondary - story books, comics, novels, magazines, academic articles, newspaper articles, or internet articles...

For reading to become a habit, it has to be like a culture - we learn about it, appreciate it, practice it, and pass it on to others around us. Reading can be very pleasurable indeed. If movies can help to create interest in reading, so pick a movie and then, read the novel. Many readers have done that - of course, some discover that they enjoy reading more than watching the screen for you are not confined to the movie director's imagination and creativity.

Oh! Come on. It's just one out of the countless days in your life when you feel so down, and that nothing good seems to happen; that you seem to wake up on the wrong side of the bed; or suddenly, you become the victim of circumstances!

Breathe in! Breathe out! To share a precious advice from my colleague, Pn Mastura Johar, in one of our aerobic cum fitness class - breathe in at the count of EIGHT. You'll feel better because you have just inhaled more oxygen. That's also her secret to maintain awet muda - stay young and youthful :)

Do just that, and you're gonna be okay? NO - unfortunately, problems don't go off that easily. Taking flight does not help in the long run.

Muster enough courage in you and combat the stress factor. You can lose in the battle combatting stress - you cry, feel depressed, chicken-out from the arena... vent your anger...But you should WIN in fighting and handling the stress factor.

Check out your environment. Are you at the right place??? What about the people around you? Are you in the right crowd? Look at yourself. Should you belong where you are? Hmmm...top it up with Hemalan's (taken from active blogger's response) "...i thinks, how abouts, why nots, and the what ifs....", you may find the strength to face the challenging and stressful moment.

Is stress common? Yes..and don't be surprised that there's also positive stress called 'eustress' as much as the known negative stress - 'distress'. According to Payne and Whittaker (2000) taken from a textbook I used in my Study Skills class some time back - "Stress is an essential part of life. It provides excitement, impetus, and motivation as well as distress and anxiety."

In short, it helps to identify the source of stress and build enough energy within ourselves to face it and solve it. It's 'fight' or 'flight'.

Having said that, think about this - some battles are not worth fighting for! So, is it better to ignore? The choice is ultimately yours...

Groups that Work :)

Effective groups sit together and discuss in order to reach a final decision. Ideally, members would communicate ideas and exchange feedback in response to the issue raised. This process can be labelled as "group communication" - that we talk to each other, explain our stance, ask for clarification, and debate contradicting ideas.

Sometimes, group discussions lead to conflict - don't panic. This is a healthy progress because group members are open to express their own opinions - never succumb to groupthink, that is. This conflict will invite debate, sub groups, further debate, and finally a group decision via majority vote or consensus.

Indeed, group communication entails a lot of talking!

So, what if you're "born" - shy? quiet? and you believe you have problems with self-confidence and self-esteem? What if you become sick on the discussion day, and you've lost your voice, and you can't cognitively process the information in order to argue for or against a preliminary decision. Do you suddenly lose your significance? What can you do to (still) contribute to the success of your group communication?

TIPS:

Recall the good, easy moments in class when your close friend talks (or presents a speech) in front of the class and you sit back comfortably at your seat. Once in a while, you'd nod your head and smile to show support. Now, apply this skill to your group and see how you encourage others to talk. When they return your favour, you'll find support in speaking your mind - speak up!

Can you imagine a group of speakers with no listener at all? Hence, one way to make groups work is to train listeners as much as we train speakers. Of course not passive listeners!

Use nonverbal messages like leaning forward, head nods, hand movement, as regulators to direct the flow of interaction.

If you have quiet and shy members, who undoubtedly have lots of ideas, prompt them to talk. Probes like - "Let's listen to Qila's opinion on this issue" or "I'm sure Raj can explain this better than me" - shifts the responsibility to talk onto the less extrovert member - at least, it saves him from volunteering his idea!

Limit your group discussion to one idea or issue within one time frame. Arguing over four or five ideas at one time makes you muddled and puzzled...and move on to the following ideas using transition signals or signposting.

In a nutshell, this article emphasizes on how completely anybody can play an effective role in a group discussion. It doesn't require a talkative person, nor an extrovert personality, or a leader to make groups work!

Groups: Simply Indispensable!

According to Galanes & Adams (2007), "Groups exist to meet important human needs".

How significant is this claim to you? Or perhaps, the question should be - what kind of human needs are we dealing with here?

Think about this list: inclusion, affection, sense of belonging, power, achievement, support, etc.

Some of us have undoubtedly lived through obstacles and challenges, mostly due to our own hard work and determination. We have also accomplished some goals all by ourselves, without having to depend on others for help and assistance.

Nevertheless, this individual journey can be exhausting and sometimes too demanding. If we could only share the work with two other friends and colleagues, and later celebrate the joy of our team work, won't it all be less stressful and more meaningful?

The concept of "groups" is so important that it has become pervasive in our society. Students gather and form "study groups" as early as in primary school. Educators divide students into "cooperative learning groups" in their classrooms using either the cooperative or collaborative learning approach.

Even assignments and graded projects at university level are mostly done in "small groups" , may be for two main reasons:1) more ideas can be tapped to produce better results 2)undergraduates will experience the success and tribulations of working with others to accomplish a final result. A glance at workplace literature also emphasizes on groups - "teamwork" and "group dynamics" are indeed the two essential concepts in organizations nowadays.

So, "groups" do serve all these practical and logical purposes - exams, classroom activities, projects, etc. It is indeed an indispensable structure in our lives.

Got a Topic for Public Speaking?

A friend comes around one day and asks, "Why do children watch so much television until they forget about socializing?"

If you are a parent yourself, preparing a speech topic for a PTA assembly, this will be an appropriate discussion topic. You can grab the chance to educate parents about the influence of television on children, and remind them to encourage their children to mingle with peers and the neighbourhood friends.

Nevertheless, will this topic attract the attention of teenagers or university students? Is this a major concern in their everyday lives? If they listen to you, will they gain benefit almost immediately?

Public speaking students always start their speaking challenge with informative speech. This type of speech is easier to begin with, compared to persuasive and argumentative speech. It's a speech genre almost anybody can handle - provided you pick a suitable topic.

The first rule is to investigate your audience. You can do a simple survey by merely checking if friends would be interested to learn about hacking? employability? communication skills for IS professionals? animal testing? illegal immigrants? etc.

Next, pick a topic that you feel comfortable presenting and discussing in front of so many people. Avoid topics that have been a taboo in your life, or sensitive issues, prejudices, etc.

Doing an extensive research on your topic will help you play the role of the "expert" - at least, that you know 70% and your audience have a grasp of 30%...on the topic. Basically, as a speaker, you have to inform the crowd about your topic.

Because you "are" the speaker, the audience will assume that you have some extra information to share with them. Think about this - if it's not significant, it might as well be a one-minute conversation topic at the cafe, or bus-stop.

A careful analysis on both, yourself and your audience, will help you take off gracefully. Later, you can start to worry about other aspects of success in public speaking like content, delivery and language.

Cutting the Gordian Knot

In life, we sometimes have the luxury of making a choice, a decision - and we lavishly bring into the cruise three elements: time, procrastination, and hesitation. Unfortunately, this often results in stress and underachievement.

Let's understand the nature of decision - that choices must be made in time for it to be meaningful. For instance, deliberating over a long list of topics over and over again does not help an ENGF 103 student make up his or her mind quick enough to submit the assignment to the lecturer. So? Be like Alexander the Great who "Cut the Gordian Knot" with boldness and decisiveness.

Tips:
In making decisions, piles of data and reading materials may not help much if we don't have the "right" materials.

Studying the problem time and again will not lead us to the decision, unless we "prioritize" the analysis and impose a "deadline".

At the end of the pursuit, find the courage in you to "Cut the Knot!"

True - we are amazed to still see ourselves and people around us spending so much time reading and understanding surplus information, yet still cannot decide. So, who says making decision is easy?

Alexander the Great was supposed to untie the knot, but he chose to cut it- the quickest way to loosen it. He used his mighty sword, of course...what about you?

Have you tried "storytelling"?

Sounds childish? Definitely not. Childlike, may be..which is positive indeed. This is a common genre of creative speech that is discussed at TESL conferences. As much as it is mostly children who participate in storytelling competitions, students in secondary school, colleges and higher istitutions may want to try it out themselves.

My children have tried storytelling, and these stories have taken them through challenging moments on stage, losing and also winning the prizes and incentives, of course. To me, what really matters is that they find enough courage in themselves to stand in front of a big audience, being only 7,8, and 9 then, participate, and learn the tru meaning of perseverence (lots of practice) and endeavour. Congratz Nadia & Farah. You are such darlings:)

Why storytelling, you may ask. Well, most interestingly, it improves your paralanguage ( which is like icing to d birthday cake & spice to mamak's curry). That includes intonation, voice, expressions,...hmmm..can imagine a speech embedded with these effects? a conversation embellished with these secret formulas?

Like reading aloud, try storytelling. Grab a big book this moment and have lots of fun. Enjoy.

Academic Blogging: Speak up and Write

Academic blogging is one way to express our ideas and opinions, indeed. Our personal reaction to an article or issue may have a lot of impact to others who share the same interest, perception as well as concerns. Our stance - made known - can also contribute to the majority . Sometimes, we can even find solutions to our anxieties by reading what others have to say in response to the discussion topic.

Professional writers write articles, chapters, and technical documents. Undergraduates write academic essays or research papers for class assignments or dissertations. This writing genre is more serious and requires more than opinions and an extent of elaboration. Claims must be supported by literature review and in-text citations to establish a scholarly context. This may not sound easy nor friendly to beginners and budding talents who wish to start speaking their minds.

So, what would be an easy solution to this inspiration to speak your mind? If journal writing does not quite work because it's between you and yourself - try blogging, for you would indeed have an audience to exchange ideas.

Read the articles or issues raised by the author, and think creatively, critically and laterally. Now - what / how do I feel about this topic? Has this ever happened to me, and what did I do at that time? Can I contribute a solution to this problem? Do I have ideas to extend this discussion and make it lively and interesting? Have I heard people talking about this matter, and what were their comments? Ask questions and probe for response that allows expression of opinion.

Blogging takes, at most, 30 minutes of your time. Compare this portion to other ways that we actually spend our 24 hours. It's time we start reading, forming opinions about a discussion topic, and express our opinions. This healthy exchange of response can be therapeutic and reciprocal.

When you see others sharing the same ideas, concerns, and worries, and several others supporting and helping you with tips or experience, won't you feel like you are not alone anymore? This will motivate you to speak up more - and finally - the time will come when you shall muster enough courage to speak up orally, in small group discussions, class presentations, or better still - public speaking competitions and debates.

It's a new year, and it comes with new promises and fresh resolutions. It's a new year and we should unshackle our paradigms. It's time to speak up, and it calls for us to speak up more, indeed. The year will be more dynamic and fulfilling if we choose to speak up! If speaking has to wait due to some personal reasons, try sharing your thoughts via writing. Try blogging - write your comments, ideas, and tell people about your experience. Unravel the wonders blogging can do to you and the people around you. Let's make it happen!

Speak up: Deliberating the Barriers and Challenges

Given a choice, how many of our undergraduates will voluntarily enrol for a "speech course" or "public speaking class" and earn credits for the semester?

Despite promotion posters and attractive rewards for a public speaking competition or elocution contest, how can we guarantee that new faces will participate and compete for the trophy?

The current demands of evaluation in education as well as employability imposes on our undergraduates to possess adequate skills and courage to speak up, present ideas, argue and negotiate. The onus is on them to develop this skill.

Swain (1985) wrote, "We learn to speak by speaking".

But it's not as easy to speak up and talk to others about our ideas. Common problems like nervousness, lack of confidence, and low self-esteem may create barriers to beginners. Given a bit of exposure on theories and practice, some will still refuse to speak up.

In our daily lives, we speak more than we write. But some of us still find public speaking, or even speaking in a group discussion, an ordeal, a nightmare, and a tough challenge indeed.

Speak up: A Ticket to Employability

Think about this - you can get shortlisted for a job due to your well-crafted job application letter, curriculum vitae, and proposal. Nevertheless, "The selection interview may help discriminate between various applicants" (Varma, Toh & Pichler, 2006).

Speak up because your ability to express your opinions can be your most valuable asset! It can indeed be your ticket for employability.

Graduates competing for job opportunities realize that good ideas on paper can be transformed to impressive results and job offers! by the noble attempt to speak up and present your ideas in a persuasive manner.

So, waste no time! Participate in a speaking competition, present your insights in a group meeting - convince your audience with your eloquence and wits. Stand a chance to be spotted for your talent and ability, and discover that two days, two weeks or even two months later, you are hired - you get a job - because of your decision to speak up.

This may be hypothetical to some, but cutting-edge graduates have proven that speaking skills is indeed a determinant factor to secure a job opportunity.

Speak your minds and share your ideas and opinions with others around you!

Believe it. Keeping your ideas to yourself may not take you far. The time spent on generating the arguments and supporting details will end up with an A+ letter grade or a pensive moment of silence.

Try to speak up!, share and present your ideas, and influence others around you.

Speaking your minds can be promising in several ways:
1) an opportunity to tell people about your wonderful and critical interpretations of issues
2) a platform for you to gather more audience to support your opinion
3) a convenient means of publicity for yourself

Speak up is indeed a kickstart to persuasive communication which can be used as a tool to inform, persuade and influence others to support your stance. It also promotes critical thinking and healthy debate on issues of interests.

Persuasive communication comes in handy for undergraduates in their academic oral presentations, graduates in their selection interviews, CEOs during contract negotiations, and even political leaders during their election campaigns.

As the saying goes, "No man is an island". One needs a friend, a company. What better way to cherish this rapport other than to communicate your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs via conversations, discussions, and debates.
